介係詞 (Preposition)

英文的介系詞數目眾多，以下我們分四個層面來討論重要介系詞的用法：1.一般介系詞 (simple preposition)；2.片語介系詞 (phrasal preposition)；3.動詞與介系詞的組合；4.形容詞與介系詞的組合。

1. 一般介系詞 a. 表時間的介系詞 • at 用來表示「一時間點」或「短暫的時間」 例如：at 3:30 、 at noon 、 at night 、 at the end of the day 、 at the present time 、 at the age of twenty等。

• on 用來表示 「日期」，包括週日、生日、節日，以及「某日之上、下午或晚上」 例如 : on May20 、 on Saturday 、 on my birthday 、 on Thanksgiving 、 on Sunday afternoon 、 on New Year’s Eve等。

• in用來表示「較長時間」，如年、月、世紀、季節、上下午或傍晚 例如 : in 1985 、 in August 、 in the 20th century 、 in summer 、 in the afternoon 、 in the day time 、 in his life等。

• for 用來表示「一段時間」 例如 : for three hours 、 for two days 、 for six months 、 for ten years 、 for a long time等。

• during用來表示「一個期間」 例如 : during the week 、 during the winter 、 during the war 、 during yours absence 、 during my vacation等。

• since 用來表示「從某一個時間到另一個較後的時間」 例如 : since yesterday 、 since last week 、 since 1950 、 since two months ago等。

• by用來表示「截止」、「不遲於」、「在……之前」 例如 : by three o’clock 、 by tomorrow 、 by the end of the week 、 by the time I get back等。



• within用來表示「在某段時間內」 例如 : within two hours 、 within three days 、 within this month等。

注意， in 也有類似的用法，但較強調「時間的經過」。 例如： in five minutes 、 in one hour 、 in two weeks等。

• through 用來表示「從頭到尾」或「自始至終」 例如: through the night 、 through the whole month 、 though the year 、 Monday through Friday等。

• until或till用來表示「一直到」 例如: until noon 、 until Monday 、 till tomorrow 、 till then等。

b. 表地方的介系詞 • at用來表示「較小的地方」或「特定的地點」 例如：at the door 、 at the bathroom 、 at home 、 at the office 、 at the bank 、 at the library 、 at the airport等。

• in用來表示「較大的地方」或「在房子或建築物之內」 例如：in the lobby 、 in New York 、 in the east 、 in the sky 、 in the world 、 in the distance 、 in the library 、 in the restaurant等。

注意以下的用法： at the information desk in the lobby at Provident Hospital in New York

• on用來表示「在……之上」 例如：on the desk 、 on the wall 、 on the ceiling 、 on the train 、 on the airplane 、 on the street等。

注意以下的用法： at No. 259, on Maple street, in Boston

• beneath用來表示「在……之下」 例如：beneath my feet 、 beneath the stairs 、 beneath the hills 、 beneath the waves等。



• over用來表示「在……上方」 例如：over your head 、 over the table 、 over the river 、 over the mountain top等。

• under用來表示「在……下方」 例如：under the chair 、 under a tree 、 under the rug 、 under his coat等。

• above用來表示「高於」 例如：above the clouds 、 above sea level 、 above horizon (地平線) 、 above the atmosphere (大氣層)等。

• below用來表示「低於」 例如：below sea level 、 below the surface 、 below the knee 、 below 20 degrees等。

• by或beside用來表示「在旁邊」 例如：by the window 、 by the river 、 beside the driver 、 beside the church等。

• near用來表示「在……附近」 例如：near me 、 near my house 、 near the post office 、 near the beach等。

• across用來表示「在那一邊」或「對面」 例如：across the river 、 across the sea 、 across the bridge 、 across the street 等。

c. 表方法的介系詞 • by可用來表「處理的方式」 例如：by hand 、 by machine 、 by telephone 、 by email等。

• by也可用來表「使用的交通工具」 例如：by car 、 by bus 、 by train 、 by plane等。

注意以下列這些用法： on foot 、 on horseback 、 in a car。

• by還可以用來表「計算的方法」 例如：by the hour 、 by the month 、 by the dozen 、 by the pound等。 d. 表目的或目標的介系詞 • for可用來表「目的」 例如：for your own good 、 for sale 、 for rent 、 for a walk等。

• for也可用來表「目標」 例如：for freedom 、 for peace 、 for the championship等。

e. 表原因或理由的介系詞 • for可用來表「原因」或「理由」 例如：for stealing the money 、 for bad conduct 、 for want of sleep 、 for it’s beautiful scenery等。

f. 表工具的介系詞 • with可以用來表「使用的工具」 例如：with a knife 、 with a pen 、 with a check 、 with cash等。

• in可以用來表「使用的語言」 例如：in English 、 in Chinese 、 in Spanish等。

g. 表狀態的介系詞 • in可用來表「情況」 例如：in good condition 、 in safety 、 in danger 、 in despair等。

注意下面這些用法： under such circumstances (在這種情況下) 、 at war (交戰中) 、 at a standstill (呈靜止或停頓狀態)

h. 表來源或材料的介系詞 • from可以用來表「來源」 例如：from Texas 、 from Canada 、 from ancient China 、 from the factory等。

• from也可以用來表「材料」 例如：from rice 、 from wheat 、 from grapes 、 from oranges等。

注意，若製成品未改變原材料之性質時，介系詞用of，如：of wood 、 of iron 、 of plastic等。

i. 表價格、速度、高度、溫度等的介系詞 • at可以用來表「價格」 例如：at a high price 、 at $50 、 at a bargain (以廉價) 等。

• at也可以用來表「速度」、「高度」、「溫度」 例如：at a low speed 、 at 100 miles 、 at 10,000 feet 、 at 95 degrees Fahrenheit等。

j. 表穿著的介系詞 • in可以用來表「穿著」 例如：in shorts 、 in blue jeans 、 in a red shirt 、 in a black dress 等。

注意，in可以直接用來表示「顏色」，如：in white 、 in yellow 、 in green等。

k. 表所有或擁有的介系詞 • of可以用來表「所有」 例如：of the dog 、 of the house 、 of John’s (雙重所有) 等。

• with可以用來表「擁有」 例如：with long hair 、 with big blue eyes 、 with short legs等。

2. 片語介系詞 片語介系詞與介系詞片語不同；前者是介系詞，後者是片語。意即，片語介系詞與 一般介系詞相同，其後必須接名詞作為受詞。不過在片語介系詞加上受詞之後，也 形成介系詞片語。例如，以下結構即為一介系詞片語：

due to the rain ( the rain為片語介系詞due to之受詞。

英文的片語介系詞包括： according to「根據；依照」 in front of「在……前面」 ahead of 「在……之前」 in honor of 「表示敬意；紀念」 along with 「與……一起」 in proportion to 「按……比例」 as for 「至於」 in spite of 「儘管；不顧」 as regards「關於」 in the event of 「如果；設若」 because of 「因為」 in the face of 「面對；面臨」 by means of 「藉由」 instead of 「代替；不……而」 by way of 「經由」 on behalf of 「代表」 due to 「由於」 on the part of 「在……方面」 for the sake of 「為了」 owing to 「由於；因為」 in accordance with 「遵照」 prior to 「在……之前」 in case of 「萬一；倘使」 regardless of 「不顧；不管」 in charge of 「負責；管理」 thanks to 「幸虧；由於」 in compliance with「依從；順從」 with a view to 「為了要」 in favor of 「贊成；支持」 with respect to 「關於」
