2012 Annual Report

Years of Community Service

Come in, all are welcome! “Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.” We are a hub for advancing self-sufficiency. St. Stephen’s Community House, a faith based settlement house, has been brightening lives and strengthening families in Columbus since 1919. St. Stephen’s mission is dedicated to helping its residents become self-sufficient through programs and services that strengthen the well-being of individuals and the surrounding communities. Agency services meet our established commitments - helping residents maximize their potential in the areas of social development, community organization, education and childcare. Our mission has always been driven by the needs of our community. Our mandate is to aim high and work hard, remembering that the only limits to our impact are the lack of imagination and commitment. In the early 1900’s St. Stephen’s served as a settlement house, assisting new immigrants to learn the language, assimilate to the culture, and acquire citizenship. As the needs of its community grew, so did St. Stephen’s. While it continued to serve the needs of immigrants to the U.S. and Columbus, the organization eventually expanded to serve all of its community members, especially those most in need. Since 1965, St. Stephen’s has focused its service in the Greater Linden area, weaving itself into the fabric of the community. In doing so, St. Stephen’s strengthens its families with intentional social service programs, empowers their youth through mentoring, tutoring and entrepreneurship and nurtures their children with quality childcare and education. This holistic approach strives to support the physical, social, and emotional needs of the Greater Linden Community. Welcome to our house!

When you are willing to make sacrifices for a great cause, you will never be alone. - Coretta Scott King To my fellow stars: Fiscal 2012 was a year of great accomplishment for St. Stephen’s Community House, marked by creativity and innovation across our services and events, promising financial results, and strategic steps directed towards stellar service delivery. I believe success comes from collaboration and that great things in business are not usually done by one person. We, as an agency, have been very fortunate to have a strong board of directors who bring their considerable experience to promoting the delivery of quality, accredited, and relevant services. Our future rests not only with the positioning our agency for another successful 94 years but with how we deliver on our mission of being a hub for advancing self-sufficiency; making lasting positive changes in the lives of those we serve. We’ve made great strides in our commitment to encourage healthy eating for children, meeting the growing demands in our pantry, establishing ourselves as leaders in keeping children and families whole and strengthened, delivering innovative programs that challenge young minds, and reminding our seniors that life begins at 60! On behalf of all of us who work at St. Stephen’s Community House, I want you to know that we are all committed to excellence, listening to and evolving with the needs of our neighbors, and focusing on what counts to maximize the potential of our families in the Greater Linden area. With you as a mission partner, willing to work alongside us, for a great cause, we hold near to our hearts that we are not alone. Our families know they are not alone. Our children and senior citizens know they are not alone. United together under one vision of brightening lives, we will remain a beacon of hope for all who enter our doors. In the spirit of commitment and the relentless pursuit to Brightening Lives in Columbus,

Michelle M. Mills President/CEO

I am personally convinced that one person can be a change catalyst, a transformer in any situation, any organization. Such an individual is yeast that can leaven an entire loaf. It requires vision, initiative, patience, respect, persistence, courage, and faith to be a transforming leader. A Message from the Board Chair

- Stephen R. Covey

Greetings Friends of St. Stephen’s Community House, My name is Joe Miller and I have the incredible – yet incredibly humbling – task of serving as Board Chair for St. Stephen’s Community House. We as a Board are fully committed and make it our mission to preserve the legacy of the past 94 years. I am constantly amazed at the depth of passion, diligence and generosity displayed by the staff, my fellow Board members, the volunteers, and those who honor us with their giving. As I see it, our job is to shepherd what God has blessed and continues to bless these last 94 years. I give you my promise that our Board will provide the governance and support necessary to ensure that the programs and services provided by St. Stephen’s Community House will continue to meet the needs of those we serve. I assure you that we will maintain a clear view of our operations and ensure that our goals are established with focus and clarity. We will be prepared for the eventualities that come in times of adversity, making the tough decisions as they come, with robust strategies, frank discussions, and with team decision making. And, we will be constantly on the lookout for the next opportunity to refine, grow and develop; nurturing our long track record of being a hub for advancing self-sufficiency. I invite you to read our report and become inspired by our story. I offer you the opportunity to become involved. I ask you to pray, asking of God how you can best support our efforts. I trust that you will choose to be a part of the success of St. Stephen’s and to join us in brightening lives in the Linden Community. Blessed to Serve,

Joseph Miller Board Chair

As a hub for self-sufficiency, we build community through…

Neighborhood Services

Neighborhood Services Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. - Leo Buscaglia Community and Emergency Services Program The Community and Emergency Services programs assist households with basic material needs, providing emergency food and financial aid to struggling families on an as needed basis. In addition, our Choice Food Pantry is open 5 days a week, allowing qualifying families to access the pantry and “choose” the foods they would like for their family. Annually, the Christmas Care/One New Toy program executed in partnership with the Central Ohio Labor Council as well as a coalition of schools, organizations, businesses, civic groups, government, and over 900 volunteers, provide food and toys to hundreds of families to celebrate the Christmas season. In 2012, 4,165 households received emergency food and over 3,000 individuals/ families received food/toys during the Christmas Holiday. An additional 153 households received material assistance. h Living Well In Linden This Initiative focuses on providing health & wellness services to the Linden community. h Bike Loan Program loaning bicycles to individuals/families to increase physical fitness. In 2012, 70 participants were loaned bicycles; riding an estimated 1,210 miles. h Community Garden a fruit/vegetable garden on-site at the agency for community residents and program participants to volunteer and receive the harvest. In 2012, more than 75 families received fresh garden produce over 100 volunteers and residents worked in the garden.

“America is the richest country in the world. And yet tonight, thousands of your neighbors will go to bed hungry. It may be your child’s schoolmate who is undernourished and has difficulty learning on an empty stomach. Or it could be a co-worker, a working mother whose low-wage job doesn’t make ends meet. Perhaps it’s an elderly neighbor who has to make a decision whether to delay filling a prescription or buying groceries. The faces of hunger are as broad as the faces of America.” ~ David Nasby, General Mills “Saint Stephen’s Community House Food Pantry provides me with food just when I need it. The Food Pantry helps me get through the remainder of the month before I am able to receive my food stamps again. Not only does the Pantry provide food when I need it; it provides my family with a nutritious meal that helps keep them healthy. I absolutely love Saint Stephen’s food pantry and I personally referred multiple families to utilize the pantry.” ~ Susan: Single Grandmother of six grandchildren.

Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. – Dale Carnegie I have had the pleasure of working with Desha for the past two years as a student in the after school program. When Desha began, she had low self-esteem and she struggled academically. I would meet with Desha’s teachers regularly to figure why she was struggling academically. Desha showed little interest in her academics but managed to bring homework to complete during study time. Desha was not turning in assignments because she did not know how to complete her work. After meeting with Desha’s teachers, we determined that she could have a learning disability and would need to undergo further testing to confirm our suspicions. After further testing it was determined, that Desha had a learning disability, and would have to change schools to better meet her educational needs. Desha made major improvements in the classroom from the start; her self-esteem improved, along with her grades. The second grading period Desha brought home a solid 3.3 grade point average, a major improvement from the first grading period with a meager 1.0. Desha was one of eight students selected to go on a ski trip to Mad River Mountain for academic excellence. I congratulated Desha for making honor-roll, Desha smiled and said she feels like she was on top of the world. I and seven other students gave Desha a group hug and encouraged her to keep making strides - improving her academics and attitude. This is an example of a student who battled adversity, through hard work bounced back, and is on the right track to a positive future. ~ Bruce Hankins, Youth Services Department. www.saintstephensch.org

Family Services Family Services

The family is both the fundamental unit of society as well as the root of culture. It … is a perpetual source of encouragement, advocacy, assurance, and emotional refueling that empowers a child to venture with confidence into the greater world and to become all that he can be. - St. Aelred of Rievaulx

h Family to Family Initiative The Family-to-Family Initiative provides support services to families, focusing on keeping families together as well as building strong healthy families. SSCH is the lead agency in this partnership operating satellite offices in Columbus’ South and East neighborhoods; 2 other settlement houses working towards the same goal with Franklin County Children Services. In 2012, 657 families received services in this County Wide Initiative. h Senior Services Program The goal of the program is help senior citizens maintain selfsufficiency. Support services, advocacy and transportation services are provided. The program collaborates with LifeCare Alliance to provide lunch to seniors in our dining center (average 26 per day). In 2012, 412 seniors received services and of those seniors receiving services, 96% seniors reported maintaining independent living status.

The Linden area has a rich history of community involvement and partnerships with civic and social services organizations, all working to make Linden a great place to work and call home. - Ernest L. Sullivan-Linden resident and board member.

Quentin is a single father with two children, Paris age 3 and Heaven age 1. Quentin first came to Family-To-Family in January of 2012. The Family-To-Family Case Manager met with Quentin and Quentin stated that he was trying to gain custody of Heaven as she was placed in foster care. Quentin stated that both daughters had been with their biological mother until she could no longer care for them. Quentin stepped up and assumed his responsibility as the girl’s father. Quentin was able to gain custody of Heaven. Quentin is now working and taking care of the girls. Quentin has participated in numerous Family-To-Family groups and events such as resource management, educational advocacy classes, and budget planning sessions. As life would have it, Quentin’s work hours had been cut on his job in early 2012. Quentin requested assistance for rent. FamilyTo-Family provided material assistance for his rent and he was able to pay a portion which allowed him and his daughters to stay in their home. Quentin has been keeping up on his household bills as well as providing a stable home for his girls. ~ Jeff McCreary, Family Services Department

Childcare

Childcare

Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our young children. - Walt Disney

St. Stephen’s Christ Child-Child Care Center provides a safe and nurturing environment for children, 6 weeks to 48 months of age, while their parents are working or attending school. Our goal is to engage children in a quality early care and educational program that fosters their creativity, self-esteem, and development. A team of child development specialists, social workers, and volunteers collaborate with our teaching staff to ensure that the needs of our children and families are being met. St. Stephen’s Christ Child-Child Care Center has continued to provide high quality care and education; therefore, maintaining national accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Nearly all the children who have participated in the program long enough to be assessed twice on the Developmental Continuum meet our goal of improving on 80% of the measurements in the tool. Parent surveys administered in autumn of 2012 indicated that over 90% of respondents believed that their child benefits from their participation in St. Stephen’s Christ Child-Child Care. St. Stephen’s Christ Child-Child Care has continued to meet requirements yearly to maintain accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children, a strong indicator of high quality childcare. In 2012, childcare provided for 120 children; Project Starfish-a program supported by the Christ Child Society to foster self-sufficiency and reciprocity, served 14 families who in turn completed 234.5 hours of volunteer time.

On August 15, the preschool classes had a special visitor. 8 year old Cameron Smith came to visit, and brought us his birthday gifts!! Cameron decided that this year he had all the toys and books he needed, so he asked his friends to bring books for the children of St. Stephen’s Christ Child-Child Care to his birthday party. In addition, he cleaned out his own bookshelf and brought us some of his favorite books from when he was “little.” Our children were on the playground when Cameron and his mother brought the books, and Cameron thought we should just give them to the children later. Ms. Mary was pretty sure the children would be excited, and wanted Cameron to see how much they loved his books. Out to the playground we went. When the children saw the boxes of books they were thrilled. Each of them sat down to read, and Cameron told us some interesting science facts from one of his favorite books. Cameron and his mother stayed for about half an hour. Cameron was very impressed with the amount of time the children spent with him and his books. “They must really like them, because they are giving up their recess to read!” The children were very impressed with the beautiful new books Cameron brought them, and enjoyed having a “big kid” read with them for a while. What wonderful lessons Cameron learned about the importance of books, and about unselfishly helping others, and what a wonderful lesson he taught our preschoolers about sharing and generosity. Thank you so much to Cameron and his mom! www.saintstephensch.org

Together, with our partners, we develop socially through…..

Volunteering Volunteers

Balance, peace, and joy are the fruit of a successful life. It starts with recognizing your talents and finding ways to serve others by using them. - Thomas Kincaid We are grateful for all the volunteers who served St. Stephen’s during 2012. It is our goal to support individuals and families in the Linden area as they achieve self-sufficiency and our volunteers play a vital role in that process. The assistance our volunteers provide is invaluable as we focus on programming in senior services, youth services, emergency services, childcare, and family services. Our volunteers have partnered with St. Stephen’s to assist with our major fundraising activities: BRAVO! for the Children and the Gingerbread Fantasy. They also assisted during a variety of company Community Care Days, internships through high school and college, and our Christmas Care/One New Toy program where we, along with the AFL-CIO, served more than 3000 families. Many of our volunteers are individuals who want to give back, but we also have many companies, schools and community organizations that helped as well. Cardinal Health, Catholic Diocese high schools (Bishop Hartley, Bishop Watterson and DeSales), Christ Child Society, Columbus Health Department, Columbus State Community College, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Dublin Community Church, Fortner Upholstering, Hamilton STEM Academy, Huntington Bank, Limited Brands, Linden McKinley STEM Academy, Nationwide Insurance, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Office of Natural Resources, OhioHealth, OSU, Olde Orchard, South Mifflin STEM Academy, The Graham School, Victoria’s Secret, and Wellington School to name a few. Volunteers impact the lives of Linden area residents by sharing their talents with our seniors, our children in the day care center, our youth in the after school program, and our clients who use the food pantry. They also assisted in development, maintenance, and the community garden. Our volunteers provided assistance to our staff, companionship for our seniors, mentorship for our youth, and maintenance for our physical plant. During 2012, our 1467 volunteers served 6017.24 hours for a savings of $125, 459.45.

As a hub for self-sufficiency, we build community through…..

Community Advocacy and Parent Engagement

Community Advocacy & Parent Engagement

Children, after all, are not just adultsin-the-making. They are people whose current needs, rights, and experiences must be taken seriously.

- Alfie Kohn

The Community Advocacy and Parent Engagement activities and initiatives take many forms at St. Stephen’s Community House. Including contact with Linden area schools to share information, participation in school events, and participation in the work of the school all in an effort to shape outcomes for students living in the Greater Linden area. Parent Engagement and Community Advocacy also represents a smaller range of projects such as: h Non-Academic Barriers Community Advocate coordinates efforts to eliminate and or reduce non-academic barriers to education. Feeder school staff makes referrals to Community Advocate for eligible families. Families are then connected to St. Stephen’s Community House Emergency Services Department for family support services such as food, clothing, utility and material assistance. This commitment to assist families and students is further demonstrated in the work we do with parents. h Parental and Family Support Parents are valuable in contributing to their child’s educational progress. Community Advocate along with St. Stephens’ staff work to enhance the involvement of parents by providing parental support, guidance and education.

www.saintstephensch.org

h Family Support and Education at St. Stephen’s Community House begins by building strong relationships with families and other professionals in the community. Community Advocate provides resources and educational support for families both in and out of school times. The strong relationships that St. Stephen’s has built with professionals in the community are a direct result of the incredibly important work of the Principal’s and Community Alliance Workgroup. The Principal (School) and Community Alliance Meeting provides an opportunity for educators and community members to collaborate on ideas that increase educational and social opportunities for our students and their families who live in the Greater Linden area.

Community Advocacy and Parent Engagement

It takes someone with a vision of the possibilities to attain new levels of experience. Someone with courage to live his dreams. - Les Brown

h Early Education is an essential part of a child’s preparation for kindergarten. The Columbus Kids initiative, funded by the United Way, provides the Community Advocate with the skills and materials necessary to work with parents to help them identify if their child is ready for kindergarten. Parents complete a learning check-up and if their child needs additional services such as a referral for services, Community Advocate is there to assist parents with their early intervention needs. Columbus Kids is a popular early learning initiative in this county. In July of this year, over 10,000 children were enrolled in the Columbus Kids program and a total of 14, 762 Learning Check-Ups had been completed. h Community Canvass is an opportunity for St. Stephen’s staff to connect with the residents of the community. This year over 400 surveys were collected in and around the Greater Linden area. Statistics gathered from the survey results are used to make informed program decisions, process improvements and improve collaborative work with other agencies. The results will led to strategically designed and impactful future services to meet the needs as requested by our residents and neighbors.

Linden is Great because it (LA Columbus) has a rich heritage of a culture of a community that works together, of individuals that have a desire to succeed and organizations that want to help enrich lives to enable that success. -Kathy Houck, former Linden area resident, Board Chair, and finance committee member.

We have a 94-year legacy because of committed partners, donors & sound financial practices!

Financials Financials

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal. – Henry Ford

Our Stewardship St. Stephen’s Community House expects all employees to make sound purchasing decisions that ensure the continued efficient operation of the agency. To help get the most from every procurement dollar we have established vendor partnerships. These partnerships are negotiated using the full benefit of the agency’s buying power and include an analysis of the vendor’s corporate sponsorship of community activities. Discussions on corporate sponsorship usually go one of two ways. Either the vendor is pleasantly surprised at how their corporate involvement in the community is honored by the agency and how their corporate mission is compatible with the mission of St. Stephen’s, or they see the importance of this aspect of contracting with us and catch the spirit of community involvement through corporate sponsorship or volunteering. We recognize the value of corporate sponsorship in the community regardless of the beneficiary, and frequently the benefit accrues to us. Vendors often donate gifts for our fundraisers, provide services at little or no cost, or share costs with us. Strong relationships with our vendors are developed through this process.

I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. – George Bernard Shaw
