Homecoming As a prelude to a host of unforgettable Homecoming activities and athletic contests, Concordians packed the Bulldog arena for Friday’s Pep Rally where they met the Homecoming court, cheered for their teams and recited this year’s theme, “O Captain, My Captain.” The campus community enjoyed a weekend highlighted by traditional events such as alumnae reunions and the fair, where campus groups like the Student Senate and Phi Beta Lambda hosted games and sold caramel apples to kids of all ages. Special ceremonies included recognition of the university’s geography program and inductees into the Athletic Hall of fame including the 1981 volleyball team. Students celebrated the 19-3 Bulldog victory over the Prairie Wolves and the crowning of new royalty by joining their peers for an evening of partying and entertainment at the Homecoming Dance in Janzow Top. Concordia’s jazz band stole the show for the first full hour and students showed off their moves to the swing dance and snap. DJs finished off the night with a variety of tunes from hip-hop to square-dance. --Dan Brown

SAC Welcomes New Director

Rehema Kavugha joins the CU community as the new Stu-

dent Activities Council Director. Originally from Houston, Texas, Kavugha graduated from Concordia Seward six years ago with a degree in Music Education. She taught four years in New Orleans and then the next two years in Virginia. “It’s great to be back!” she says about her experience so far. Kavugha says the best part of her job is meeting and interacting with all the students and having fun with them. Her primary goal this year is to provide students with “an amazing experience” just like the one she had when she was a student. This year, Kavugha organized a variety of social events including outdoor movie nights, laser tag, bowling, game nights and one of her all-time favorites from her student days – Spring Weekend. SAC also invited a magician and a Valentine’s Day singer for a campus performance. -Hope Colwell

Gospel Mime

Mime Shares the Story of Christ Freshman Chris Pladsen directed a small cast of student actors to produce the first campus Gospel Mime, a tradition he grew up with at his home church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Performed during the Easter season, the Mime is an interpretation of the death and resurrection of Christ. The event, which was the culmination of two months of intense practice, drew sizeable crowds within the Seward community and was featured on Lincoln 10-11 News. Proceeds from the Mime were used to help defray medical costs for Ethan Bulgrin, a toddler from Waco who has a heart defect.

Art Club Concordia Welcomes New Art Professor Joshua Smith returns to his alma mater to teach art after arriving from Wyoming with his family this summer. He currently teaches a variety of courses from art fundamentals to sculpture. Smith says that his interest in art started in high school. “I liked working with materials creatively, and it was different from other classes like writing or math,” he says. After he arrived at Concordia as a freshman and met professors who were passionate and excited about art, Smith decided to study art instead of education. He states that he “just found himself drawn into it.” Smith’s favorite materials to work with are steel and wood. His October Marxhausen exhibition entitled “Traces of Place,” featured metal sculpture, natural materials and photographs. Smith says in the future, he would like to do some larger public pieces where he can collaborate with other artists. -Hope Colwell

Narrative Film Production Nix Leads Film Production Class     Aaron Nix, a video producer and multimedia developer for the marketing department, introduces his new course this spring, Narrative Film Production, which focuses on producing films and how directors create stories and put them in a visual format. The course, taught in conjunction with the ECTA department, culminates with the showing of student-made films. While the class contains only six students, Nix thinks this is ideal. “Having a smaller class size allows us to do more hands on work with each student and establishes a more intimate atmosphere,” he says. Nix earned his undergraduate degree at the the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in Theater, Film and New Media, and his master's at Florida State University, before moving to Seward in 2012. He is married and has two young sons. -Hope Colwell

  Johnson Makes Directing Debut

Joy Johnson, an ECTA adjunct pro-

fessor, directs her first collegiate play, “The Glass Menagerie”, by Tennessee Williams, this spring. It is an autobiographical account of the changing relationship between the author and his sister. “I have always loved this play and had hoped to direct it one day. I’m so glad that now I have the chance,” Johnson says. Johnson is a 2002 Concordia graduate who taught ten years in Baltimore before she and her husband, who teachers in Lincoln, returned to Nebraska. They are blessed with two daughters. -Hope Colwell
