Language Learning: Since second language acquisition forms much of the foundation of teaching English to speakers of other languages, this workshop will explore both the historical background and current theories of second language learning. Foundation of Linguistics: Linguistic theory & language learning make up nearly 40% of the ESOL Praxis exam. Therefore, this workshop will explore Phonology, Morphology, and Syntax along with other important linguistic elements. Special attention will be given to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and its relationship to the sounds of the English language. Planning, Implementation & Management: This workshop will explore various teaching strategies as they relate to the second language learner. Additionally, this session will lead into the exploration of multiple methods of assessments as well as culturally and professionally related aspects of teaching English as a second language. Cultural/Professional Aspects of the Job: This session will focus on culturally related differences in teaching/learning styles as they relate to teaching English as a second language. This session will also examine various resources, programs, and professional organizations that are beneficial to ESOL teachers. ESOL program models and the legal foundations for these programs will also be addressed. 1.800.728.1022

The management of an ESOL program, balancing the requirements of identification and assessment, the design and delivery of a English language acquisition program, the compliance with state and Federal regulations addressing the education of ELLs, and auditing issues – is a daunting task. The SWPRSC ESOL Cadres are designed to provide attendees with information and guidance to assist them in carrying out all of these responsibilities. Cadre topics include compliance with the requirements of the Kansas ESOL program and Title III; auditing issues for ESOL; Office of Civil Rights compliance; instructional strategies for ELLs; program design; parental involvement; counseling issues; and most importantly, time for ESOL teachers and directors to network and share.

Director Location: SWPRSC, Sublette Registration Fee: $125/Members; $140/Non-member districts College Credit: 0.5 Credit Hour per day for $45.00, payable to MidAmerica Nazarene University These are exciting times in Kansas education! Along with all of the important work associated with the waiver from NCLB, Kansas stakeholders have been engaged for several years focusing on the state’s accreditation system, QPA, working to envision and build a new system that better interacts with the desires of the state. A crucial part of that work focuses on a movement away from the AYP system of examining the percentage of students who are “proficient” on the state assessments toward a system focusing on a variety of characteristics of a school district while taking into account Relevance, Rigor, Relationships, Results, and Responsive Culture. While this new approach is exciting and long-awaited, there are MANY questions regarding this major adjustment. This workshop will provide a professional learning opportunity for school leaders who need a deeper understanding of the inner workings of this new accreditation system as it now stands. As the new system has not been formally adopted, participants will have the valuable opportunity to dialogue with KSDE personnel to assist in its final development. www.swprsc.org

"The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be positioned to compete successfully in the global economy." (corestandards.org) The CCR Standards set requirements not only for Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA), but also for literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. Just as students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, so too must the Standards specify the literacy skills and understandings required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines. The Standards lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person in the twenty-first century. This workshop will support teachers in modifying the planning, delivery, and assessment of instruction for success in implementing the new Kansas CCR. Included is a discussion of the paradigm shift necessary for successful classroom instruction and increased student achievement.

Each component defines a distinct aspect of the corresponding domain. Levels of teaching performance (rubrics) describe each component and provide a roadmap for improvement of teaching.
