MESSAGE FROM OUR EVENT CHAIRS The Jewish blessing, “May you live until 120” holds special meaning for us at NCJW as we now have reached that special milestone! As we reflect on our history, we can be proud of the impact we have made in our community and in this region. In the course of these 120 remarkable years, we have answered the call from our community during the Industrial Age, the Depression, two World Wars, the Cold War, the Sexual Revolution, the creation of the State of Israel, the Civil Rights Movement and the Technical Age. We have built a social infrastructure which exists to this day and have formed lasting collaborations and partnerships to perpetuate and advance these contributions. As we welcome all of you to our Anniversary Party, we also welcome to the helm of this great organization our new Executive Director, Andrea Kline Glickman. We are fortunate to have found such a committed and visionary woman to lead us into the future and are confident that Andrea will leave her own important imprint on Pittsburgh Section. Our celebration this evening is made even more special by the presentation to Judy Greenwald Cohen of the Hannah G. Solomon Award. In the 120–year history of this organization, only sixteen women have risen to the standard that Hannah G. Solomon forged, and we are proud to bestow that honor upon Judy in recognition of her contributions, not only to this organization, but to our entire community.

We are also very proud to launch and announce the Center for Women, in collaboration with the Jewish Women’s Foundation. With our Director, Becky Abrams, and the Partner’s Council comprised of NCJW members and JWF Trustees, we are confident that the Center for Women will provide invaluable assistance to the many women in our community who are experiencing transition in their lives, whether due to loss of a spouse, loss of a job, aging out of the foster care system, or any of a number of other causes, by making critical resources available to them and enabling them to find solid ground in their lives. Once again, NCJW is addressing a community need; we have worked long and hard with the Jewish Women’s Foundation to create this community resource. So if the prospect of doing something very important excites you, join the Pittsburgh Section of NCJW and get involved in whatever community service project or advocacy opportunity that interests you. NCJW will change your life! Lastly, we extend a hearty Pittsburgh Welcome to Marlo Thomas! Marlo’s life and work exemplify the values of NCJW. She is a passionate and compassionate activist whose efforts toward advancement of women’s rights and empowerment are a true example for us all. Happy 120 to us, and here’s to at least another 120 years of good works! Lynette Lederman

Marlo Thomas is an award-winning actress, author, and activist whose body of work continues to have an impact on American entertainment and culture. She has been honored with four Emmy Awards, the Peabody, a Golden Globe, a Grammy, and has been inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame. In 2010, she released her sixth book—and only memoir—Growing Up Laughing: My Story and the Story of Funny, which became an instant NY Times bestseller, and she also launched her own website, MarloThomas.com on AOL. Ms. Thomas burst onto the scene in television’s That Girl, which broke new ground for independent women everywhere, and which she also conceived and produced. Her pioneering spirit continued with her creation of Free to Be…You and Me, a project that became a platinum album, best-selling book, Emmy Award-winning television special, and a stage show. Throughout it all, she has remained a constant presence on television (most recently The New Normal) and on and off-Broadway. Her five bestselling books include Free to Be You and Me, Free to Be a Family, The Right Words at the Right Time (Volumes 1 and 2), and Thanks and Giving: All Year Long, the latter of which became a Grammy-winning CD. She has been honored for her activism with the Helen Caldicott Award for Nuclear Disarmament, the ACLU’s Thomas Paine Award, the American Women in Radio and Television Satellite Award, and the William Kunstler Racial Justice Award. Marlo’s continuing social conscience led her in 2011 to launch a bullying prevention campaign on her website and help spearhead a nationwide anti-bullying initiative in partnership with, among others, the Ad Council, AOL, Facebook, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services. Ms. Thomas is the National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, which was founded by her father, Danny Thomas, in 1962. Her tireless efforts and ingenuity are behind countless fundraising and awareness campaigns designed to educate the public about the pioneering and life-saving work being done every day at St. Jude–work that impacts the lives of children in communities across America. Ms. Thomas lives in New York with her husband, Phil Donahue. 12 0 T H A N N I V E R S A RY A N N UA L M E E T I N G

THE HANNAH G. SOLOMON AWARD The Hannah G. Solomon Award, named for the Founder of the National Council of Jewish Women, is its highest honor. Recipients are those community leaders who have a strong NCJW identity, who have helped change and expand the role of women in vital areas of community life, and whose leadership in NCJW’s mission—improving the quality of life for women, children and families—has motivated others to work for change, and has resulted in progress and enlightenment in the community.

AWARDEE JUDY GREENWALD COHEN

“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” -Warren G. Bennis WE SALUTE OUR FRIEND,

JUDY GREENWALD COHEN, WHO IS A TRUE LEADER AND AN INSPIRATION TO ALL WHO KNOW HER ! SUSIE JORDAN AND LYNETTE LEDERMAN

Judy Greenwald Cohen has been an active member of the National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section since 1988 and continues to serve on the board of NCJW, having been its President from 2004 through 2006. Judy earned the Ruth and Jerome Lieber Leadership Award from NCJW, Pittsburgh Section in 2008 in recognition of her ability to motivate others to support NCJW’s mission while holding multiple, concurrent leadership positions in Section. Judy also served as an NCJW National Commissioner. In October 2012, through Judy’s vision and guidance, NCJW and the Jewish Women’s Foundation have formed an exciting partnership to create a Center for Women. Judy has been serving as the Executive Director of the Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF), since 2003. JWF is an organization dedicated to educating women on the power of their own philanthropy, providing opportunities for its members to direct their dollars to projects empowering women and girls in both the Jewish and general communities. During her tenure as Executive Director, Judy has helped grow the foundation from 32 trustees to its current membership of 123 and has facilitated the foundation’s grantmaking, which has invested over $390,000 into the community.

Judy’s work on behalf of women and girls in our community includes service as Co-Chair of the Girls Coalition of Southwestern PA and Co-Chair of the Jewish Domestic Abuse Task Force. She is also a member of the Women’s Funders Roundtable, an affinity group of Grantmakers of Western PA. Judy has dedicated much of her professional career to the myriad and complex issues impacting the care of children and young adults with disabilities and their families. She is Vice President of the board of Jewish Residential Services. She serves on the Advisory Committee as well as the Housing Sub-committee of the United Way’s 21andable project, which is an initiative that is working to create a roadmap for youth with disabilities who are transitioning out of educational and supportive services. She participates on the 21andable ACT sub-committee, which is examining the barriers that prevent young adults with significant disabilities from attending meaningful day programs, and she serves on Jewish Residential Services’ Young Adults in Transition Committee and chairs its Strategic Planning committee. Judy is the immediate past co-chair of the Agency for Jewish Learning’s Special Needs Advisory Committee, which is committed to providing Jewish education and opening Jewish worship and life cycle experiences to children and adults with disabilities and a past co-chair of the Advisory Board of Steps to Independence, which provides a therapeutic support program for children with motor deficits. She also serves on the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh’s Special Needs Planning Table. Judy is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and in 2010, was a “Women of Achievement” honoree. She is married to Bill Cohen, and has one son, Joshua.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT by Hilary A. Spatz As National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section celebrates its 120th year and enters its 13th decade of service to this community, we acknowledge the thousands of women who since 1893 have, generation to generation, dared to dream big and confront the social, economic, and political issues of their time. Improving the lives of women, families, and children continues to be the polestar by which we hone our projects, commit our energy, and focus our numbers. By providing opportunities to those in need, building collaborations with like- minded organizations to ensure best results, and harnessing the talent and energy of our members, NCJW Pittsburgh Section continues to be a force of change and service. Firmly under the executor directorship of Andrea Kline Glickman, we look forward to a year of focus and renewal as we continue to review our programs and commitments in light of our mission.

M E MB E RSH IP Our membership of 1,280 volunteered thousands of hours this year. We are grateful to our Monday Women at Thriftique and the Racks on the Road volunteers providing shopping and socializing opportunities to residents of assisted living facilities; to our Designer Days and Mini Designer Days sale assistants and Sunday ladies at DDB; to those of you who drop everything to come to help in the office; to our dedicated cadre of Gwen’s Girls “mothers” who provide tutoring, arts and crafts activities, holiday parties, and resume assistance. Our volunteer-led Personal Care Closet project and Book Drive are programs that provide essential services to women and children in need. To our members who vote with a click of a mouse and participate in all of the advocacy alerts and requests for letters to legislators, hats off! To the committee members who continue to guide NCJW’s work, including Social Enterprise, Board Governance, Finance, and Membership, NCJW recognizes that it is only with our lay leadership that NCJW continues to be responsive to the changes in our community and in non-profit work.

ADVO C AC Y Our 2012 presidential election was fraught with challenges. NCJW met those challenges head-on by partnering with community organizations, including Just Harvest, Chatham University, Planned Parenthood, and others, receiving a grant from the Women and Girls Foundation to make sure that the infrequent voter, represented in large part by our clients at the Children’s Rooms and at our Thriftique store, were pledged and reminded to vote. With National’s lead, NCJW Pittsburgh supported the efforts to preserve women’s rights to reproductive choice and health care, fill federal judicial vacancies, ensure equal pay for equal work, and encourage protections for women and children against domestic violence. Our Silent Witness initiative was hosted in a number of communities and created a vivid reminder at the community vigil for a young woman murdered by her paramour on New Year’s Day, that violence against women and our failures to provide sufficient education and ensure appropriate police response remains a high priority.

C ENT ER FO R WOM E N This year’s intensive work by our leadership brought an idea to reality as the partnership between NCJW Pittsburgh and the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Greater Pittsburgh was launched. The Center is a natural outgrowth of NCJW’s strategic plan and the JWF’s desire to engage and commit to a project that would require their trustees’ direct involvement. The $225,000, 3-year grant from the JWF and a commitment from their trustees to join with NCJW leaders in the Partner’s Council created the platform and forged the basis for this unique collaboration. The Center for Women is the result of the foresight of NCJW and JWF members, leaders, and trustees, and is designed to be a singular initial resource for women in transition. For women experiencing the life changes that result from the separation from a spouse or the death of a spouse, a change in family finances due to loss of work, or the end of the responsibilities of caring for family including children and elderly parents, women in transition are a cohort for whom needed services are non-existent or scattered between various hard-to-find programs. The Center for Women, housed at NCJW’s Anathan House and directed by Becky Abrams, is on target to begin its programming in the fall of 2013 with direct and indirect services, classes, support groups, one-on-one mentorships, and internships at NCJW’s three retail operations and Children’s Rooms in the Courts.

C HIL DREN’ S RO O MS IN T HE C O URTS NCJW has operated the Children’s Rooms in the Courts for 33 years. Now located at the family, municipal and criminal court divisions of the Courts of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, NCJW provided care for 6,000 children who were given a safe and nurturing place to stay while their families were involved in court matters. We thank our caring and dedicated corps of volunteers who provide hundreds of hours to supplement our exceptional professional staff. This year under the direction of Misi Bielich, we were the recipients of the fundraising efforts of the entire Family Division Staff. Presenting a $1,000 check from the proceeds of a recipe-share and cookbook sale, NCJW is proud of our growing partnership with the staff of the courthouses. We are thrilled to announce that the Children’s Rooms project has been selected by the Juvenile Court Judges Commission as the 2013 winner of the Allegheny County’s Juvenile Probation Meritorious Service Award. The Rooms, in conjunction with Thriftique and our voucher program, are also now on the front line of providing women and children with basic clothing and supplies, from winter coats and shoes, to underwear, diapers, and strollers.

2013: BY THE NUMBERS

SO C IAL ENT E RP RI S E The mission of NCJW Pittsburgh is lived daily at our Social Enterprise operation— Thriftique. The staff and volunteers work tirelessly, providing clothing for women returning to work in our Suit Yourself voucher program and safe and nurturing work and internship opportunities for our friends from Howard Levin Clubhouse and the City of Pittsburgh Schools, women from POWER, and older adults from AARP looking to return to work. As a result of these internships, NCJW has hired from this pool of talent while others of our graduates have gone on to other organizations. Whether it is a call from a family who has lost their possessions in a fire, from the hurricane victims of New Jersey, or from Bethlehem Haven, through our retail operations, NCJW is always prepared in an emergency. Our retail stores also provide opportunities for the community to give back. Students at J-Serve, parents and children working side-by-side during our local mitzvah days, our volunteers ensure that we maintain the flow of clothing to those in need.

ADVOCACY REPORT by Christine Stone, State Policy Advocacy Chair For 120 years, the National Council of Jewish Women has been at the forefront of social change, championing the needs of women, children, and families while courageously taking a progressive stance on issues such as child welfare, women’s and human rights, and reproductive freedom. This year is no different. Whether in the Roosevelt Room at the White House with President Obama, in Senator Toomey’s regional office at the Landmarks Building Downtown, or at a coffee shop in Squirrel Hill, as your State Policy Advocacy Chair, I represented NCJW members across the Commonwealth to voice our concern about, and support for, critical issues ranging from filling federal judicial vacancies to protecting the safety net for society’s most vulnerable. In June, through our Promote the Vote, Protect the Vote program, NCJW helped plan two successful community events at the JCC of Greater Pittsburgh on Voter ID. We offer special thanks to Pennsylvania Representative Dan Frankel for his leadership on this important issue. With increased public awareness and a strong coalition, we were able to celebrate a court-ordered injunction against the law, stopping its implementation for the November 2012 Election. Voices for Reproductive Choices. As the leading pro-choice Jewish organization, NCJW continues to work for the protection of every female’s right to reproductive choices—including safe and legal abortion—and for the elimination of obstacles that limit reproductive freedom. While we weren’t able to stop the Pennsylvania State Legislature from passing burdensome regulations on abortion clinics, we have been fending off a bill to prohibit insurance coverage of abortion care in policies provided in the new insurance exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act. Stay tuned!

When the year started, little did I know that I’d be invited to the Roosevelt Room in the West Wing of the White House to speak with President Barack Obama regarding the work I do chairing NCJW’s Pennsylvania Coalition for Constitutional Values. Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett and Senior Counsel to the President Chris Kang were also in attendance and were particularly interested in how we have built a coalition to promote a federal bench with judges who support fundamental constitutional freedoms, including worker’s rights, environmental rights, and a woman’s right to reproductive choice. And last—but not least—in March, I was most proud to serve as vice-chair of NCJW’s premier public policy event, Washington Institute 2013. A theme of “telling our stories” was ever present during the Institute as we honed in on three issues facing our communities: prevention of gun violence, immigration, and reproductive choice. Speakers included Virginia Tech mom Lori Haas, Sandra Fluke, DREAMER Julieta Garibay, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry, and Eleanor Smeal from NOW. As we move forward, let’s remember Hannah G. Solomon who, in 1893, put forth a daring vision that Jewish women in America could help change the world. Today, through her vision, we put our Jewish values into action. Happy 120th NCJW, and many more.
