Mission

Together, improving lives and building a stronger community.

ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD

We come from different places. We come to different conclusions. But underneath it all, we share a passion for reducing poverty in Erie County and improving the human condition. When we LIVE UNITED, we can create real, lasting change in the building blocks of life: the education, income and health of our neighborhoods, our families, even the person next to us.

Dear Supporters: Imagination. It was a critical component last year when we laid out our bold vision to reduce poverty and increase self-sufficiency in Erie County by 2025. We invited all of you to imagine how much better our community could be if there were 10,000 more local families able to meet their basic needs without any form of public or private assistance. Last year, we began laying the tracks toward making that dream a reality. We have worked diligently with volunteers and experts in the field to set clear, measurable goals that will help us meet the challenge we set last year: to help 10,000 more local families become self-sufficient by 2025. We know that everyone in our community will be better off when we advance the common good. And you have clearly shown to us that you approve of this new direction. Thanks to your passion and generosity, we raised over $6.1 million dollars during our 2012-13 Campaign, making it our largest fundraising campaign ever! Thank you so much for providing us with the resources needed to transform our community. However, it will take more than money to achieve change. Now we ask you to imagine with us once again. We are thrilled to have partnered with The Erie Community Foundation and others to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to Erie County. This game-changing program has achieved amazing results in hundreds of other communities across the country, and we know it will do the same here. In just the first three months, we signed up more than 5,000 children in Erie County, giving us a great start down our path to success! Over the next few pages, you will learn what we have accomplished during the past year, and what we plan to accomplish in the year to come. Together, our collective impact can turn a bright future from imagination to reality. That’s what can happen when we LIVE UNITED.

United Way’s work goes well beyond our historical role of funding strong nonprofit partners. Today we are mobilizing all our assets: funding, volunteers, legislative advocacy, technology, in-kind resources and corporate partnerships to deliver transformative, measurable results. LIVE UNITED 2025 is United Way of Erie County’s long-term vision to transform our region. Our goal is ambitious: to reduce the number of families struggling to meet their basic needs by one-third by 2025. That’s 10,000 more self-sufficient families in our community. By connecting families to the building blocks of economic stability - Education, Income, and Health United Way and our partners will ensure people have the tools they need to thrive.

GIVE 99 cents of every dollar stays in Erie County. United Way funds programs and initiatives in more than 20 boroughs, cities, municipalities and townships in Erie County.

$6.1 million invested by over 13,000 donors

Nearly 100,000 lives in Erie County are improved each year by United Way-funded programs and initiatives. United Way’s newest initiative - Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library - is open to every single child in Erie County under the age of five, regardless of household income.

HOW TO HELP

There are many ways to give to United Way beyond the traditional workplace campaign. You can also give online anytime at UnitedWayErie.org or by texting DONATE to 80888. Plus, you can now sponsor a child in the Imagination Library. Visit UnitedWayErie.org/imagination for details. 4  |  United Way of Erie County

An EDUCATION Success story... “Lauren” was a youth in need of after school supervision. She struggled in school and had behavioral difficulties within her community and educational environment. Thanks to a United Way-funded program, Lauren was provided with a safe space to work on homework, receive a hot meal, and develop life skills. As Lauren’s self-confidence increased, she began to work harder in school and explored a multitude of career paths. Once Lauren reached high school, she began volunteering to work with youth who had experienced similar lifestyles. After Lauren graduated from high school, she eventually landed a full-time job in the Erie community, where she still continues to volunteer to help others learn, grow, and reach their full potential. “Lauren” was just one of the thousands of children and youth who were helped by United Way last year. United Way funds more than 20 different programs and initatives working to end the cycle of poverty by preparing more children to graduate from high school on time and with the skills necessary to succeed in education beyond high school.

An INCOME Success story... When “Jill’s” husband died unexpectedly, she was not financially prepared for the sudden loss of income. Jill had been using her credit cards to finance ongoing expenses and had maxed them out. She desperately needed assistance, as she was being sued by the plumber, was behind on her taxes, and was in danger of losing her home. Jill went to financial education classes funded by United Way. The counselor was able to help Jill restructure her debt so that she could pay off her bills. She enrolled in a financial literacy class designed to help her set and reach a financial savings goal. When

Jill reached that goal, she was able to completely pay off past debt. Jill also brought her children to classes as part of the process so that they, too, could learn good financial habits. She and her children now live within their means and are self-sufficient, all thanks to this program that was made possible through United Way funding. United Way is focused on helping 9,999 more families like “Jill’s” reach self-sufficiency, so they can meet their basic needs without any form of public of private assistance. In addition to funding a variety of programs and initiatives, United Way of Erie County also worked hard to successfully advocate in opposition to legislation that would allow the reintroduction of the payday lending industry in Pennsylvania. These payday lenders offer predatory financial products that trap low-income families in an inescapable cycle of debt.

A HEALTH Success story... “Alan” experienced severe burns after an explosion in his home and his injuries required extensive medical attention. He had been recently unemployed and did not have health insurance at the time of this explosion. Upon his return home, Alan learned that he was about to be evicted. Through programs funded by United Way, a social worker was assigned to assist Alan in obtaining insurance and accessing resources for food and shelter. He received extensive care from registered nurses and learned to independently care for himself. Eventually, Alan was able to remain in his home and return to a higher level of functioning. More than 25,000 other men, women and children in Erie County received help like “Alan” through United Way’s funding of various Health programs and initiatives. This funding is designed to encourage preemptive healthcare while also offering support to individuals in crisis situations that often can lead to them to fall into poverty.

community buildin We earn your trust through the transparent way we operate our organization, as evidenced by meeting and exceeding national standards for governance and financial accountability, as well as our volunteer-based method of allocating and disbursing funds to meet community needs. Every program that receives funding from United Way is tracked throughout a threeyear funding cycle to ensure ongoing success in achieving desired outcomes. None of this would be possible without the dedication and hard work of our many Community Building volunteers. Whether they served on an allocations panel or as a member of one of our Impact Councils, these men and women are helping ensure United Way of Erie County’s resources are aimed at improving the most lives and effectively addressing poverty in our community.
