2013 Annual Report of Giving

“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” -Maya Angelou

A Message from Our Executive Director ... Dear Friends & Supporters of St. Paul’s: As you flip through the pages of this 2013 Donor Report, I kindly ask you to pay special attention to each and every name listed among these pages. These individuals, couples, churches, organizations, and businesses are more than just donors; they’re catalysts for change and champions of our cause. Simply put, these gifts of time, talent and treasure help make St. Paul’s the fine organization that it is and instill a sense of pride in those who live and work here. With your generosity, St. Paul’s is able to continue to meet the needs of all of our residents, current and future; provide home-based services to those who need them; as well as serve as a resource for the Greenville and surrounding communities. Despite an ever-changing landscape in the field of long-term care, the board and administration of St. Paul’s has dedicated itself to remain in the forefront with a proactive leadership approach and positive social impact. We strive to go ‘above and beyond’ to create partnerships and experiences that enhance the lives of everyone around us in a meaningful and valuable way. To those of you very familiar with our campus, thank you for being a part of St. Paul’s. Conversely, if it has been a while since you’ve last visited, please consider calling on us – we’d love to show you around! In the meantime, please enjoy learning more about the following topics in this year’s report:

The completion of Keeping the Promise: A Campaign for Resident Care & Home Based Services A substantial bequest from the estate of Arthur E. Fleming Words of support from a few of our donors A complete listing of our 2013 supporters And much more …

Most importantly, on behalf of our residents, the board of directors, and staff, I thank you for your confidence, partnership and support. It means a great deal to all of us. Gratefully, G. Bryan Oros Executive Director

In memoriam & with gratitude ... In 2013, St. Paul’s was the grateful recipient of a bequest from the Estate of Arthur E. Fleming totaling more than $160,000. “This gift is one of the largest bequests that St. Paul’s has received in recent memory,” said Director of Development Diane O’Brien. “Mr. Fleming’s generosity at this level is truly astounding, and we are humbled to be included in his estate planning by way of our historical ties to The United Church of Christ and his lifetime membership at Salem UCC.” “We only wish we had the chance to thank him in person,” O’Brien said. “Mr. Fleming’s gift will be put toward a cause that his dear friend, Chuck Motter, said he would have greatly appreciated: helping those residents who can no longer afford the full cost of their care.”

***

Arthur Eugene Fleming began his life journey May 12, 1927, the third son of James M. and Virginia Detar Fleming. He grew up on the family dairy farm on Cropps Corners Road, Salem Township, along with his two brothers and two sisters. Art often told of pumping water for the dairy herd. He went on to graduate from Salem High School in Lamartine in 1945. After graduating, Art served in the U.S. Navy before returning home and graduating from Franklin Commercial College. During the Korean Conflict, Art returned to serve with the Navy. In his early life, he was employed as a chief clerk for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad and as a clerk office manager in a local building supply firm. In 1955, Art joined up with Charles L. (Chuck) Motter to form the partnership of Motter and Fleming, which lasted more than 55 years. Together they transformed $2,000 into a successful real estate holdings business. They designed and built the Lor’ Art Apartments as well as other units, a maintenance garage for Bell Telephone, and five national sorority houses on the edge of the Clarion University campus. Although not a graduate of Clarion University, he had a great love and support for the university. In 2002, he was awarded the Eberly Award for philanthropy from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Art was also a member of the board of directors of the Clarion University Foundation, Inc. Art’s love and passion for traveling took him not only to 47 of our 50 states, but through 67 different airports to visit 52 countries on six continents. Many of the countries he has visited on more than one occasion. In September 2010, he returned to Oberammergau, Germany, to see the Passion Play for a second time. When not traveling or at his home in Knox ,you could find him strolling the white, sandy beaches at his home in Naples, Fla. At 4 a.m. May 28, 2011, Art left on his journey to join his mother, father, brothers Stanley and Paul, and sister Dorothy. Art left behind his beloved sister, Margaret “Peg” Umstead and her husband Ralph, as well as eight nieces and nephews. He also left behind many faithful and loyal friends, including his longtime business partner, Chuck Motter, and special friend, Patrick Reed, who often called him “Dad.” 3

“No one has ever become poor by giving.” ~ Anne Frank

St. Paul’s Auxiliary Celebrated 40 Years in 2013 Works Diligently to Support Residents A favorite Bible verse of Lois Eastlick’s reads as follows: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40).

Auxiliary hosts a variety of fundraising events year round to raise additional monies.

This is the verse that Lois shares at church to encourage participation in the St. Paul’s Auxiliary, which is simply a matter of making a donation, she said, adding that one year a little girl gave her a quarter toward the annual membership drive.

“One of the biggest events we do is sell uniforms twice a year,” said Lois, noting that other events include an annual Christmas bazaar, the “Books are Fun” sale and a Masquerade Jewelry Sale. New this year will be a “What’s Hot” sale that features items that are trendy.

Lois, who is a long-time member of St. Paul’s Auxiliary, said the group is made up of ‘plain, old people – men, women and children.”

“St. Paul’s Auxiliary serves as a great testament to what people can accomplish when they work together,” said Director of Development Diane O’Brien. “These folks volunteer their time and efforts to raise money, but they also serve a much greater purpose – their service is an expression of love to our residents and the community in which they live. I think that is priceless.”

What is impressive is that these ‘plain, old people’ have successfully raised nearly $300,000 since the Auxiliary’s inception in 1973. And every penny goes toward helping the residents of St. Paul’s. “People should support the Auxiliary because the Auxiliary supports the residents,” Lois said. In addition to the annual membership drive, the 14

Walberg Family Supports St. Paul’s Without Walls Since 1999, Bretton and Stacey Walberg have owned and operated Walberg Family Pharmacies, starting with one location in Jamestown and then expanding to 10 more locations throughout the region. In this time, the couple and their business have become big supporters of the community, always looking for meaningful ways to impact the lives of those around them. One such way they have discovered is through supporting St. Paul’s. “Working in the healthcare field, many of our customers proudly call St. Paul’s their home,” Stacey said. “We see the good things St. Paul’s does for them and wanted to share our gratitude. Being a donor is our way of saying, ‘Well done, St. Paul’s, for recognizing a need in our community, logistically meeting that need and contributing to the positive emotional interests of our family, friends and neighbors.’” The Walbergs frame much of their philanthropic decisions around a solid Christian foundation and hope to set a good example for their sons, Keaton and Rylan, in doing so. The couple considers if their contribution is able to help people in a positive way and if it is toward a cause that supports those who support their business.

The Walbergs opted to support St. Paul’s Without Walls via the Keeping the Promise campaign, and recognize St. Paul’s as a leader in helping members of the community gracefully grow mature with a complete continuum of care.

“No two requests are exactly the same, but we strive to put a great amount of time into each decision, ensuring we do the right thing and assist those who need the support most,” Stacey said.

“St. Paul’s Without Walls is truly an irreplaceable service in our community. For many years, we have seen so many people that want to stay in their family homes longer,” Bretton said. “However, they cannot do so without a little help.”

“When we first heard about the St. Paul’s Without Walls initiative, we knew this would be something we wanted to support,” Bretton said. “It was a unanimous decision for us – and a very quick decision. The need is great, and we are thrilled to be able to see the good it is doing for so many people.”

“With St. Paul’s Without Walls, they now have someone that can do so for them,” Stacey said. “What a blessing to so many sons and daughters – just knowing their loved ones are being cared for in their own homes when they cannot be there to care for them themselves.”

Keeping the Promise

A Campaign for Resident Care & Home-Based Services In response to changing trends in long-term care and declining reimbursements from the government, St. Paul’s opted to take a proactive approach to plan for the needs of our current and future residents by introducing a $1.1 million resident care endowment and home based services campaign called “Keeping the Promise” in 2012. Unlike any other appeal, “Keeping the Promise” is unique because it will help support two new initiatives at St. Paul’s – its first ever resident care fund that will grow in perpetuity and a home based services program called St. Paul’s Without Walls (WOW) that will meet the needs of residents of the Greenville community and surrounding areas right in their own homes. With the help and generosity of many supporters, the campaign surpassed its goal and garnered $1.44 million in gifts and pledges as of June 30, 2014. This would not have been possible without you: residents, resident families and friends, churches, community partners, volunteers, board of directors, and staff. St. Paul’s has been a steadfast part of our community for many, many years and has provided loving, capable care to thousands of seniors. Many people have counted on St. Paul’s – either for their own needs or that of a parent, relative or friend. Your help and generosity makes it possible for St. Paul’s to be there for the next person or family in need! Ways to Give If you are considering giving to St. Paul’s, there are many different options to do so. Here are a few:

inheritance taxes of most states. Bequests should be prepared and executed with your attorney’s assistance.

Gifts of Cash

Charitable Gift Annuity

Cash contributions may be made in one transaction, in several payments or on an annual basis.

Gifts of Securities

Appreciated stocks, bonds, closely-held stock, or other property may be given to St. Paul’s. The value of a gift of stock is determined by the average market value of the stock on the date the gift is made. To identify the best procedure for making such a gift, contact both your broker and the Development Office at St. Paul’s.

Bequests

The bequest is the most common form of planned giving. With a bequest, you may make provisions for St. Paul’s in your will, designating either a dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. Whatever the amount, bequests to St. Paul’s are entirely free from federal estate tax and the estate and

The Charitable Gift Annuity is a simple contract between you and St. Paul’s. Your tax-deductible gift will be used to fund an annuity that will guarantee you lifetime income. This can be funded with either cash or securities.

Gifts of Life Insurance

You may assign St. Paul’s as a beneficiary, co-beneficiary, or a secondary, remainder, or residual beneficiary of your life insurance policy. Annual dividends also may be assigned to St. Paul’s. When St. Paul’s is named as owner of a policy and/or the irrevocable beneficiary, the cash value of the policy may be deducted on your income tax return. The premiums paid thereafter also are income tax deductible.

If you would like more information on how to support the mission of St. Paul’s, please contact Director of Development Diane O’Brien at 724-588-9613, Ext. 1237. 23

Pleased with ‘Grand Vision,’ Couple Shares Gifts with St. Paul’s As unique as each person is, so, too, are his or her reasons for being philanthropic. Whether one is looking to make a difference, support a favored cause, or even to qualify for a charitable contribution deduction on income taxes, charitable donations can help achieve certain goals. For Harry and Marge Heppner, residents of The Colony, their faith plays a big role in their decision to give, and their goal with giving is to enrich the life of individual residents as well as the community of residents, in general. “As Christians, it is our responsibility to share what we have been given,” said Marge, adding they have a desire to support St. Paul’s as it is a local community organization. Marge & Harry Heppner

While a teenager, Marge was the recipient of lifechanging benevolence, which has also impacted her desire to be philanthropic.

displays a “willingness to listen and follow through on suggestions;” Rita Clemente, director of colony living and community outreach, displays “excitement and enthusiasm concerning the present and future of St. Paul’s;” and Director of Development Diane O’Brien displays genuine appreciation “when one agrees to simply consider a donation.”

“As a 17-year-old, the Jamestown Lions’ Club paid for surgery to correct strabismus (crossed eyes),” Marge said. “They then acquired a four-year, full college scholarship for me from the PA State Board of Rehabilitation. Giving to St Paul’s has been a way for me to give back.” Marge cited St. Paul’s leadership team being open to new ideas and crafting a grand vision for the future of St. Paul’s as primary inspiration for their decision to donate.

In addition to being visionary, when Marge thinks of St. Paul’s, she recalls loving, kind and caring personnel who promote resident involvement.

“The leadership team members possess unique qualities that reinforce our decision that our voice is heard and our gifts are put to good use,” Marge said, noting that Executive Director G. Bryan Oros

“Knowing that St. Paul’s will always provide for our needs brings comfort and security to us,” said Marge. “And as residents, we are encouraged having witnessed visionary thinking come to fruition.”

* Deceased

In 2000, St. Paul’s created its Legacy Society in order to recognize donors who have remembered St. Paul’s in his or her estate planning through either a bequest or a deferred gift. Currently, there are more than 60 couples and individuals who are members of the Legacy Society; however, in many cases St. Paul’s wasn’t informed of this act of kindness until after the person’s passing. There is no minimum amount required for membership. An individual or couple simply needs to inform the Development Office of the intent to include St. Paul’s in an estate plan. Common methods for deferred gifts include life income plans like charitable gift annuities, insurance policies or trusts, or simply leaving a bequest through a will. Please contact St. Paul’s about making a planned gift and becoming a member of the Legacy Society. Director of Development Diane O’Brien can be reached at 724-588-9613, Ext. 1237.

Support St. Paul’s Through Online Shopping

A portion of each qualifying purchase is donated to support the mission With Christmas only months away, many people may be preparing to make online purchases. If you are a customer of Amazon.com, consider making your purchase through AmazonSmile next time, designating St. Paul’s as your charity of choice! AmazonSmile is a Website operated by Amazon that lets consumers enjoy the same selection of products, price, and shopping features as on Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price to the organization you choose. To give it a try, simply type in your Internet browser: smile.amazon.com, log in, select “St Paul Homes” as your charity in your account settings, and continue shopping as you normally would. It’s that simple! “Many people who are familiar with online shopping can now do so while simultaneously supporting a favorite cause such as St. Paul’s,” said Director of Development Diane O’Brien. “It is a win-win situation!”
