25 YEARS OF FOOD DRIVES AND COUNTING… The year 2014 is a milestone in Foodbank history. It marks the Hawaii Foodbank 25th Annual Food Drive and our 31st year of feeding the hungry in Hawaii. Through the years, you helped raise nearly 200 million pounds of food for children from low income or homeless families, seniors living on fixed incomes, the homeless, the disabled and the working poor. This year, please stand with us once more to help raise food and dollars to achieve our goal of providing food for One Million Meals. This goal is more than a number, it is the gift of life and hope to those in Hawaii who need food assistance the most.

HUNGER IN HAWAII

Our children are the people most vulnerable to hunger in Hawaii. Every day, 1 in 5 children doesn’t know from where their next meal is coming. Your donations to the Hawaii Foodbank 25th Annual Food Drive will help feed our keiki, many who come from low income or homeless families. Your food and dollars help obtain and distribute over 13 million pounds of food to the hungry each year. Your donations impact people’s lives every day and are appreciated beyond a simple “thank you” or letter of acknowledgment. Here are some of the people whose lives you’ve touched: “Thank you very much for giving us the food every week. The food that you guys give us is so ono! February 12, 2014 - Kraft Foods in Hawaii and the Hawaii Foodbank announced the results of the Check-Out Hunger 2013 campaign. From November 6, 2013 through January 16, 2014, retailers and their customers raised a total of $219,413.96 to help feed Hawaii's children, seniors and low income families.

Mahalo to our store partners and their loyal customers for raising much needed funds to help islanders in need. Gerald Shintaku of Kraft Foods in Hawaii was joined by store representatives at the Hawaii Foodbank warehouse to celebrate the campaign’s success. A check from all participating stores was proudly presented to Dick Grimm and Polly Kauahi of the Hawaii Foodbank. Thank you all for another successful Check-Out Hunger campaign!

Greg Concilla, Vice President at Valenti Print Group, began volunteering for the Hawaii Foodbank over 10 years ago by supporting our Annual Food Drive. Every year since, he has labored with us in the National Letter Carrier’s Food Drive, our Golf Classic and Great Chefs® Fight Hunger event.

His versatility and willingness to jump into any project wherever and whenever make Greg shine when it comes to exemplary volunteerism. He can work up a sweat shrink- wrapping sorted pallets of food donations or don an orange vest serving up signature gourmet dishes to VIP guests. He has registered hundreds of excited Food Drive volunteers with calm and charisma and has

packed dozens of cases of beverages on ice with just as much diligence and care. Whenever there is a call to action, Greg’s answer is always the same — “wherever you need me.” It’s never about what we can do for him, but what he can do to make himself available in the fight against hunger and for the thousands of islanders that he knows need our help. This year, the Hawaii Foodbank Board and Staff were proud to honor Greg with the prestigious “Volunteer in Philanthropy” award at the 2013 National Philanthropy Day Conference at the Sheraton Waikiki. His willingness to do whatever and whenever to help us feed Hawaii`s hungry is deeply felt by all. He is more than a volunteer at the Hawaii Foodbank — he is “Ohana!”

November 27, 2013 – From preschoolers to seniors, all of Island Pacific Academy's students did all they could to help feed Hawaii's hungry. At the elementary level, weekly activities helped focus the students' attention on helping others, and in the upper grades students built food pyramids in the library to inspire their classmates to donate. In just over three weeks, the school collected 8,821 pounds, nearly 17 pounds per student.

y the time you read this, our annual Hawaii Foodbank Food Drive will be in full swing. They’re all special, but this one even more than the others—it’s the 25th anniversary of the food drive!

Wow. 25 years. That’s a long time, yet feels like the blink of an eye. As they say, time flies when you’re having fun. Yes, I know. “Fun” sounds like an odd way to describe what we do, because our mission is serious—to feed Hawaii’s hungry families and to give food security to thousands of people who need it. But it IS fun, because we enjoy doing it and we love getting people like you excited about it. I can remember when it was all so new; 25 years ago most people didn’t really see hunger as a problem here. But our KGMB news director at the time, Terry Heaton, was a strong believer in community service. It was he who initiated what would be an enduring relationship with the Hawaii Foodbank that continues to this day.

Back then, the news stories I did that focused on the homeless, families struggling to survive and people who didn’t know where their next meals were coming from were a huge eye opener for me, for the team at KGMB9 and for the public. Nowadays everybody knows somebody who needs help. And most people understand WE are part the safety net, which is why the work of the Hawaii Foodbank is so very important. This year has started off rather badly. The emergency unemployment funds many families depend on are precarious, food stamp benefits are frozen and there are more working families that are in danger of or have already fallen through the cracks. I know it sounds like I’m repeating myself, but people need our help. And you are the reason we are able to keep children fed and families afloat. So thank you. Thank you for linking hands with us. Thank you for sticking with us. And thank you for making our jobs at the Hawaii Foodbank so worthwhile and yes—fun.
