Managers Minute

Happy Holidays! As you enjoy your family gatherings this time of year I would imagine some of you may partake in the tradition of reminiscing about the highlights of your family's experiences over the past year. Similarly, I have been thinking back about all that has taken place at Bay Indies this year. Generally, speaking, I think it has been a very exciting time for Bay Indies residents. A few highlights that come to mind include: • Many streets have been paved. • Other streets are proposed to be addressed early 2016. • The Bay House and Indies House parking lots were both paved and restriped. • The Indies Pool was reconstructed. • The Indies and Curry house pool heaters were replaced. • The Bay House received some beautiful new leather furniture. • We refreshed the shell ground cover at the Indies House and Bay House recreation centers. • We instituted a new ELS cleaning program that calls for pressure washing facilities with newly acquired equipment...that will help us increase frequency of cleanings. • We developed and executed a new plan to address some of the aging outdoor electric infrastructure of the resort common areas. • The Bay House building had a new air conditioner installed. • The entire exterior building walk-way areas of the Indies House building were painted. • New bleachers were installed at three different locations around bocce ball and shuffle board courts. • While they have been slow in coming together, the Indies Bathrooms are still on the list of "To Do's" • We installed new irrigation systems at the resort entrance and by the Sales/Administration intersection to water the new plants and flowers we installed. We thank all of those who have passed along kind remarks about some of these improvements. Those positive comments always inspire the team to work even harder to improve the Life Style experience at Bay Indies. May each of you have a wonderful New Year! Warmest regards, Ron

The Endangered Species Act of 1973 prohibits any activity that will effect a change in the natural behavior in Endangered and Threatened species in the U. S. Such activities include feeding or sheltering such animals. Feeding local birds - other than song birds - is against the law. U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Services can impose fines starting at $1,000 and up to $7,500 per occurrence and may include possible jail terms. Endangered or threatened birds in Bay Indies include the Wood Stork, Roseate Spoonbill, Reddish Egret, Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Tricolored Heron, and White Ibis. In addition, there is a federal law prohibiting people from bothering any wildlife in its natural habitat. It is best that you do not feed any waterfowl, such as Great Blue Heron, and Great White Egret. None of the above birds should be approaching people or people's doors looking for food because someone has been feeding them.

Occupancy:

A mobile home in Bay Indies may only be occupied by the owners of the mobile home, approved lessees, registered guests for periods permitted by these rules, and other invitees and licenses not staying overnight. Bay Indies complies with the Federal Housing for Older Persons Act of 1995 in that the Community is intended to be and is operated as “housing for older persons”. “Older persons” are defined as persons fiftyfive (55) years of age or older. All prospective residents of the Community will be screened for compliance with this provision, and no application for residency will be accepted without satisfactory proof of age. No persons of the age of 30 and below are permitted to reside in the park. It is inadvisable to sell a mobile home to a prospective resident until approval has been obtained. Park management may terminate any tenancy on any ground in Section 723.208.

They may be parked for loading and unloading purposes only.

Contractor Work & Home Maintenance

We ask that our residents use licensed, bonded and insured contractors for any and all work performed on their property outside or within the home. These stipulations allow the contractor to lawfully do work on your premises and protect the residents from any claims or damages.

FOR ANY RESIDENT’S SELLING THEIR HOME ON THEIR OWN

Please have your potential buyers come into the Sales Office BEFORE you sell your home to process the necessary paper work to be approved as residents here at Bay Indies. All prospective residents MUST be approved prior to title transfer and move in.

PET SAFETY

As we enjoy the unconditional love of our pets, let us not forget the responsibility of being a pet owner. Not picking up after our pets poses health and safety concerns for everyone living in Bay Indies. Pet owners; take responsibility, be respectful, ensure the safety of your neighbors, and set a good example. Please pick up after your pet.

Please note: pets are not to be brought to any common or recreational area within the park (such as clubhouses, swimming pools, Veteran’s Park and sporting courts). Thank you! Page 4 - January 2016 - Bay Indian

We wish you all a happy and good year. That time of year is coming rapidly when the annual Bay Indies United Way Campaign will begin. We have exciting new plans for this year which includes a Community Wide Pancake Breakfast and a mailing to residents. ELS has agreed to host the Pancake Breakfast on February 10, 2016 at Indies Hall from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Tickets are $5.00 and are available now: from Kerri at the Recreation Office; on the United Way web site, www.uwssc.org (Pay Pal or Credit Card); from any United Way Board Member; at the United Way Table for the January and February Community Coffee as well as at All Clubs Day on January 6, 2016. The mailing will provide the same opportunity as in previous years to make a donation to this cause. A lot of our South Sarasota County neighbors and friends are dealing with difficulties and the United Way, thanks to your generosity, provides help for them. The 2016 United Way Campaign will kick off next month. Stay tuned for more details. Don Kitchel, Chairman Mike Rafferty, Executive Assistant

MOVIE NITE AT BAY INDIES!

Let’s start off the New Year with a grand sequel to Movie Nite’s best attended film ever, which was “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” screened in February, 2013. Last year, based on its success, the studio released the continuing adventures (more like misadventures) of those plucky Brits who retired to that disheveled hotel in bustling Jaipur, India. Sequels are often pale imitations of the original, but in this case there is still so much to enjoy in “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” The hotel’s young, hyperactive manager (Dev Patel) is determined to open another Marigold Hotel, as well as give his beautiful bride-to-be (Tina Desai) a glorious wedding celebration. However, a romantic rival is making inroads with the bride just as the groom is way overextended trying to arrange financing for his new venture. A new American resident (Richard Gere) as well seems to be a man of mystery. Meanwhile, the original retirees are facing new challenges and potentially changing romantic partners. (It isn’t necessary to have seen the first movie to understand and enjoy this comedy sequel). The vibrant Indian settings, colorful costumes and exotic music track make this movie pop. But most of all, the cast of much lauded English actors, (Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson and Bill Nighy), still at the top of their game, keep you involved and entertained. All in all, this a feel-good movie par excellence and you should treat yourself to it on: Wednesday, January 6 at 6:30 in Indies Hall Free as always (shown in English with English Subtitles) Submitted by Gerri Pare

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT As we close the year of 2015 with approximately 250 paid dues members, we welcome in 2016 with the hope of your continued support to help us meet our total membership goals. HOA membership dues may be paid at various locations, i.e., at Saturday morning Coffee Hours, Trivia Nights, the HOA office during hours posted, or they may be deposited into either of the two HOA mailboxes located outside of the HOA Office or the Management Office, or mailed directly to Veronica Wasserman, 1st Vice Pres., 956 Zacapa Ave., Venice, Fl. 34285. We held our first block captain meeting in December and it was very productive with plans in place for the coming months. We are in need of many more volunteers and, if interested, please sign up at the HOA office or contact Greg Schwartz. The Membership Committee extends their gratitude to all residents for their support of the HOA and wishes everyone A Very Healthy, Happy New Year. Veronica Wasserman, Chair; Greg Schwartz, Director; Barbara Corcoran, Director SERVICE COMMITTEE REPORT The Service Committee met with management for its monthly meeting on November 30, 2015. On the agenda the following concerns continue to be raised with the management: There has been no progress on remodeling/repairing the inside and outside bathrooms at Indies Hall. Management continues to state it is in progress and bids are being submitted but none acceptable to date.

Lights out in the Park and streets is a problem affecting the safety of the residents. HOA Service Committee has been monitoring all lights including street lights, submitting reports and RCFs. We continue discussing the immediate need to resolve the unsafe environment caused by the lack of proper lighting around the clubhouses, lakes, pools, front of the Park, bike path and street lights as residents move about the Park. Management advises that an electrical contractor has been hired to study the problem. Such study has now been completed. According to management electrical repairs are to be done in mid-December. HOA awaits details of such study and repairs. There was an in depth discussion about arrests in the Park. A committee member monitors police websites daily for any arrests in the Park. We provide such information to management to investigate whether an arrestee is an approved resident and to proceed accordingly. The concern was follow-up of such arrestees by management. Many improvements have been completed at all clubhouses including Bay House complex. We continue to meet and communicate with management working together to improve Bay Indies community and lifestyle. Joan Sass, BIHOA Secretary, Chair/BIHOA Service Committee Committee members: George Alexander, BIHOA Co-President, member; Jan Hoy, Citizen; Ron Johnsen, Citizen; Misty McDuffie, Citizen; Dave Prosser, Citizen.

COORDINATING COUNCIL

Like everyone else at Bay Indies, its Coordinating Council is preparing for a busy and productive holiday season. The Council is readying itself to host the New Years Eve celebration at Indies Hall on December 31st. Then just six days later the Coordinating Council presents the always-fun All Clubs Day. Some details about both events are included in the following business meeting minutes, but the important thing is that the Coordinating Council wants each and every resident of Bay Indies to get out there and enjoy all the benefits our volunteer organizations have to offer. The Coordinating Council has been talking to Jeannine Riznik, a resident of Bay Indies and the Assistant Manager of Regions Bank. Her employer is offering a free checking account designed for small non-profit organizations like the ones here in Bay Indies. The Coordinating Council has literature that explains the program. Now that people are returning to the community and clubs are firing up for the season, we present this option for managing the treasury of a club or organization if you feel that expense has become too great. If your organization wants to research its options, Jeannine can be reached at (941) 484-7878. The Coordinating Council was pleased to learn that Pam Gabie has answered the community's need for someone to organize luminaries on Christmas Eve. For those who remain in the park over Christmas, the luminaries around the lakes and Covenant Church has been a traditional and beautiful way to celebrate the holiday. The person who has organized setting out the luminaries the past few years was unable to continue that task. Pam answered the call and now has teams in place to set the luminaries out. By the time this is published many will have seen the results of Pam's effort. The Coordinating Council met for its December meeting on Friday the 4th. 28 representatives were in attendance. It was noted that the current Coordinating Council secretary will not be returning to the job. The Coordinating Council put out a call for a person to finish the current secretary's term. If you would want to be secretary, or know someone who would, please let someone on the Coordinating Council Board of Directors know. By the time this is published, a new secretary should be in place. Meanwhile, the Coordinating Council is very thankful that past-president Charlotte Nichols has temporarily filled in at the secretary position.

PAM GABIE – NEW COMERS Asking for updated fliers from each club as inserts in the packet that is handed out to New Comers. GREG SCHWARTZ - HOA This year the HOA is Emailing an invoice and waiver to all residents who have not paid their dues. Cabaret is Dec. 12th. Still looking for block captains. Elections for board will be Jan. 6th, there will be no nominations accepted at the February annual meeting. Negotiations for a new contract for the year 2017 are underway with ELS. BOB DREWS - GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club is having a plant raffle. Tickets are being sold now and the raffle will take place on All Clubs Day. NANCY MULDOON - CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Asking to please leave the trees up until January 7th. If you see anyone messing with the decorations, call the police. “BayBi,” our pet reindeer, is making its visits again this year. TONY BRIDGENS – COMPUTER CLUB The Venice computer club is having their meeting here at Indies Hall on December 7th at 4:00. NEW BUSINESS A new club for our Newcomers was suggested. It is not the job of coordinating council, but anyone is free to take on this project using the current process we use to organize a new club. SCHEDULE The next Coordinating Council meeting will be January 8th. This is after January's Information Coffee and All Clubs Day, but the holiday got in the way. The Coordinating Council sincerely hopes that everyone in Bay Indies had a warm and happy holiday filled with love and some good food.

After our Christmas season time-out we are back on the courts with quite a few outstanding teams consistently winning matches. Yet the spirit of fun, not fierce competition, makes our games all the more enjoyable. Speaking of winners, our first Mini Tournament drew a good crowd, well-matched teams and in the end first prize went to Bob Leonard and Bev Wiley! Second prize honors went to Ron and Joanne Hamilton, and it was a tie for third place between Paul and Irene Larsen and Mary and Dan Toothman. Congrats to each of you, and let’s mark our calendars for Sunday, January 17, our next Mini Tournament. On your assigned day to clean up the courts, please remember to sweep the gravel AWAY from the drain on Court 4. We are still not getting full cooperation to put away our Bocce balls after the last morning and afternoon games and LOCK the shed. It’s important; also please only use practice bocce balls when not playing in league competition. The Saturday, Feb. 6 Cabaret featuring the fantastic Marcia Downey looks to be one terrific show so do purchase your $10 tickets asap as it will be open to the public (at $12) and she is a sellout performer in many big venues. The ELS-wide Tournament is now set for Wednesday, Feb. 3. The Bocce Board will shortly announce the 8 teams they voted to compete against other ELS Bocce Clubs, right here in Bay Indies, starting at 9 a.m. Come on out and cheer the home team onto victory! We are offering a special price for lunch for all spectators, $5! This includes sandwiches, sides and drinks. Purchase your tickets in the Recreation Office. Submitted by Gerri Pare

• CLUB NEWS • CLUB NEWS • CLUB NEWS • CANADA CLUB Welcome back Snowbirds for another winter of sunshine and fun. We wish you all a happy and healthy 2016. The Canada Club is a social club for Canadian snowbirds living in Bay Indies. It offers the chance to meet other Canadians in the Park, some of who may live near you in Canada. Matters that specifically concern Canadians can be shared and discussed as well as a warm and welcoming social event each month. The list of future events is below so mark your calendars: Thursday, Jan 21, 2016 Casino Night (Bay House) Tuesday, Feb 9, 2015 Valentines theme (Bay House) Wednesday, Mar 23, 2015 Farewell Party (Indies Hall) We welcome all new Canadians who would like to join. Give a call to our president Roger Ryan at 941-485-8389 to sign up for events. Membership is due and will be $5 for the year and is payable to Donna Ryan at 941-485-8389 or [email protected] Our December Christmas Dinner was enjoyed by 74 people. Affordable Catering provided us with a delicious Turkey dinner with cake to follow. We sang carols, Santa brought us all a present, there was a 50/50 draw and a beautiful hand painted Santa was given by Helga Schimanski for a draw which was won by a guest for the evening, Trudy Tumber. The proceeds are going to the Salvation Army. The Christmas Parade was a tremendous success. In addition to a decorated golf cart, a red convertible full of gorgeous Canadian ladies and a decorated scooter by Mary-Lyn Myles, about 20 members dressed in white with red sashes and Santa hats walked through the streets of Bay Indies. Everyone was calling out Christmas greetings to spectators along the way. The weather was very kind to us and we walked through a beautiful sunset. The “crowning glory” was when the Canada Club was awarded First Place for the entry!!!! Casino Night will be on January 21st, beginning at 4:30. Tickets will be available early in January at $5 for members and $7 for non-members. (Non-members will be issued a one-night only membership card.) For more information please email Donna Ryan [email protected] or Marney Robinson – [email protected]. Here’s to a fun and worthwhile winter in and around Bay Indies. How lucky we are to be out of the snow and in such a wonderful part of the country. Enjoy…. Prepared by Betty Bridgens – Secretary 418 Bimini – [email protected] - 941-244-3579

As this article is being written, we are 14 days away from the shortest day of the year. Turn the page and as this article is being read next year, we will have turned the corner and the days are getting longer. The winter solstice will have come and gone. All the more day light time coming our way to visit the courts, play on the courts and begin enjoying all our good friends and spirited yet cordial competition. We have seen a good pick up in activity on our pickle ball courts. Both the mens’ and ladies groups are turning more and more pages as each week goes by. Once again, we can say the lid is off the pickle jar. We still have not found the correct spelling of the sound a wiffle ball makes when hitting a pickle ball paddle. It will not be long before that unique sound once again fills the air. It is a sure sign the

pickle ball book continues to be written at Bay Indies. Going to apologize ahead of time for any names I might miss. Giant Kudos need to go out to Bea Miller, Camille Caron, Pop DeMello, Peg Griffin, Betty Leonard and Joan Moss. They organized and held a truly wonderful pickle ball information meeting. Your intrepid pickle ball reporter neglected to get the names of our new players who attended the meeting. I apologize and would like to meet and greet our newcomers. Please chock it up to old age. The meeting was attended by all the long time core group of players - including Bob Drouin, Pop DeMello, John Moss and Pete Frasier. It was equally gratifying to see so many new players and interested people. Great job to all the above. News on the courts is that a clinic is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, January 9th. The purpose of the clinic is to allow current players to hone their skills, introduce the sport to newcomers and introduce the sport to any and all interested parties. Instruction, paddles and balls will be provided. We have also received word that Bay Indies will also be hosting their 4th annual pickle ball tournament. A tentative date has not yet been set but it looks like it will happen in early February. We will keep you posted as soon as we know. Once again and worth mentioning - the courts have a limited number of hours reserved for men, women and mixed couple play. Those times are listed below and any other hours are considered open. All park residents are invited and encouraged to play. The weekly schedule of reserved court times is listed below. How about starting the new year with a new hobby, or, one you may already have but not done for a while. I'm referring to woodcarving. Come on down to Curry House every Tues. & Thurs. from 8 to 11 am. Pour a cup of coffee, sit down with one of us and find out what we are all about. Better yet, stop at our table on All Clubs Day at Indies House on Weds. Jan. the 6th from 10 to noon. We will have a big display so you can see some of the things we do. Also, all the other clubs in the park will have a table. So, stop at all of them and find out what is happening with each one. See you on the 6th.
