LINDENWOOD REVIEW
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT It has been an amazing year in the Lindenwood University system. This report contains some of the many highlights. We dramatically improved our student experience on campus with a slate of new partnerships, including Barnes & Noble for our bookstores, Under Armour for our athletic apparel, and Chick-fil-A and Qdoba in our dining halls. Academically, we streamlined some of our academic schools to make them stronger and more efficient, creating new schools of Health Sciences and Arts, Media, and Communication. In our off-campus site network, Lindenwood moved into the historic Old Post Office building in Downtown St. Louis, becoming the anchor tenant there and consolidating our St. Louis and Wildwood sites. Also, we donated the Historic Daniel Boone Home and nearly 300 acres of property around it to St. Charles County, allowing for the creation of a new addition to the county park system, Lindenwood Park.
The second half of this book contains our Donor Report, which is being paired with the Annual Report for the first time. It is an honor roll, so to speak, and a wonderful testament to the support we have received from our many donors and friends. We are grateful for their generosity. This has been a year like no other. Please take some time to look through this report and see what I mean. Best wishes,
Michael D. Shonrock
Our leadership team welcomed Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Marilyn Abbott, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Brad Wachler, Belleville Campus President Brett Barger, and Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Dan Grigg. In the Robert W. Plaster School of Business & Entrepreneurship, the Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise accepted the largest grant in Lindenwood’s history, and the Center for the Study of Economics and the Environment was recognized among the top economics research departments in the world. Lindenwood entered a new three-year partnership with the Gallup organization, which has already provided valuable insights into our alumni and current students; for instance, we now know that not only does the employment rate for our graduates beat the national average, they also are more likely than the average college graduate to feel engaged at work and satisfied with their lives.

STUDENTS LINE UP FOR CHICK-FIL-A, QDOBA During the summer of 2016, Lindenwood University completed a $4 million renovation of its Spellmann Center and Evans Commons dining halls at its St. Charles campus, as well as Matt’s Café at its Belleville, Ill., campus.
“”
We asked the students specifically what they wanted,
and we’re delivering an experience like no other. MICHAEL D. SHONROCK Lindenwod University System President
The changes in food service followed an approval earlier in the year from Lindenwood’s Board of Directors to partner with Pedestal Foods to overhaul the dining experience at the university. “Our partnership with Pedestal Foods is all about the students,” said Lindenwod University System President Michael D. Shonrock, Ph.D. “We asked the students specifically what they wanted, and we’re delivering an experience like no other.” The Spellmann location on the St. Charles campus now includes national brands Chick-fil-A and Qdoba as well as a new Lion’s Pride Market, where grab-andgo items and hospitality products are available, while the Evans Commons location has been transformed into
an all-you-care-to-eat destination. On the Belleville campus, Matt’s Café offers expanded food and beverage options, including Starbucks Coffee, and has nearly tripled in size with the creation of an outdoor dining area connected to the campus’ sunken garden. Vice President for Student Development Ryan Guffey, Ph.D., said the changes are the institution’s response to a student survey in which quality dining was rated just as important as campus safety and is an essential part of college life. He said students consistently sought more variety in their options and the national brands being added were “what students asked for over and over again.” Grand opening celebrations took place in late August at both campuses, during which Lindenwood and Pedestal leaders delivered remarks and participated in ribbon-cutting ceremonies. The St. Charles event also featured a ceremonial “first bite,” in which Shonrock and other administrators tried the first Chick-fil-A sandwiches served in the new facility. In addition to new vendors and renovated dining halls, the university has also added extended hours of food service operation and declining-balance and block meal plan options to provide resident and commuter students with greater flexibility.

SCHOOL MERGERS STREAMLINE OPERATIONS With an eye toward the future, four Lindenwood schools were involved in mergers in the spring to streamline operations. Communications and Fine and Performing Arts became the School of Arts, Media, and Communications this fall, and the School of Nursing has combined with Sport, Recreation, and Exercise Science to become the School of Health Sciences. Dr. Joe Alsobook is dean of the new School of Arts, Media, and Communications. With Mike Wall as his associate dean, the two are working toward capitalizing on the collective achievements of faculty and students and forge new interdisciplinary programs and partnerships. “The School of Communications and the School of Fine and Performing Arts have a vast and talented group of alumni who set a great example for our students,” said Alsobrook. “We hope to further integrate them into our programs.” Dr. Cynthia Schroeder is dean of the School of Health Sciences, which is a combination of the Schools of Sport, Recreation, and Exercise Science and the School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. “This is an incredibly positive merger with tremendous synergy,” Schroeder said. “Faculty members are excited about the possibilities.”

This is an incredibly positive merger with tremendous synergy. DR. CYNTHIA SCHROEDER Dean of the School of Health Sciences Two other changes announced by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Marilyn Abbott were the move of the Criminal Justice Program to the School of Sciences, where it joins the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the move of the Social Work Program into a department with Professional and School Counseling in the School of Education.
SCHOOLS AT LINDENWOOD | SCHOOL OF ARTS, MEDIA, AND COMMUNICATIONS | PLASTER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP | SCHOOL OF EDUCATION | SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES | SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES | SCHOOL OF SCIENCES | SCHOOL OF ACCELERATED DEGREE PROGRAMS
Schroeder expects the merger will produce better chances for state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment, and hands-on learning opportunities to more fully engage students with faculty. She said the merger also plays an important role in relationship-building throughout the region. Peggy Ellis, founding dean of the School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, is director of a new program group that includes students from nursing, public health, and fire and paramedic science. She led the relocation of the nursing faculty and programs onto the St. Charles campus this summer from their previous location in Dardenne Prairie.

BOONE HOME AND PROPERTY
DONATED TO ST. CHARLES COUNTY FOR PARK SITE At an event on April 29, Lindenwood University announced with St. Charles County that the university was donating its Historic Daniel Boone Home and nearly 300 acres of surrounding property to the county for use as a tourist site and county park, named Lindenwood Park.
“”
IT ENABLES US TO EXPAND
OUR COUNTY PARK SYSTEM
TO PROVIDE MORE GREEN SPACE FOR
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. STEVE EHLMANN County Executive
Lindenwood System President Michael Shonrock and County Executive Steve Ehlmann both spoke at the event before signing the donation agreement, which had been approved on April 25 by the St. Charles County Council. The donation included the home, the adjoining 65-acre Boonesfield Village and a collection of other historic buildings located on it, and more than 300 acres of land surrounding the site.
The home itself, a four-story Georgian-style structure, was built by Boone’s son Nathan with Boone’s help. Boone spent his final years in the home and died there in 1820. Boonesfield Village consists of more than 20 additional historic structures, all of which were relocated to the property over the course of several years.
The county continues to operate the home and village as a tourist site, as the university had, including tours of the main building and a slate of special events and educational programs throughout the year. Lindenwood acquired the Boone Home and village in 1998 from a private owner and purchased the additional property over the next several years.
“I am grateful the heritage of the Boone home will continue,” Shonrock said. “We appreciate the partnership of the county and are excited the area will be preserved as a county park.”

LINDENWOOD REVIEW
Ehlmann said the county is assessing opportunities for expanding current programming on the property.
“My enthusiasm for this donation is two-fold,” Ehlmann said. “First, it enables us to expand our county park system to provide more green space for outdoor activities, and second, I am thrilled that we will be part of sharing this rich history of our region with others.” The university holds a variety of academic activities for its students at the site, including field biology, archaeology, history, and recreation leadership classes and activities, and will continue to do so under the agreement.
LINDENWOOD PARTNERS WITH BARNES & NOBLE
ON NEW BOOKSTORE EXPERIENCE
The Lindenwood University system entered into a partnership with Barnes & Noble College to bring a new bookstore and apparel experience to its campuses in St. Charles, Mo., and Belleville, Ill. The agreement took effect April 18. “Barnes & Noble has had great success running university bookstores across the country,” said Lindenwood University System President Michael Shonrock, Ph.D. “Lindenwood’s Board of Directors is passionate about supporting partnerships that create the best student experience possible.” Shonrock said the board, which approved the agreement, was enthusiastic about bringing recognizable brands to the two campuses and providing “a new standard for retailing that will promote the quality, richness, and heritage of Lindenwood.” The selection of Barnes & Noble College allows the bookstores to offer a variety of affordable choices for course materials, including a robust in-store and online textbook rental program and an extensive selection of new and used books, as well as digital content through its new Yuzu digital platform. The e-commerce site for textbook purchases is a simple and seamless experience for students, even offering in-store pickup or shipping to any location. In addition to a variety of cost-saving textbook options, Lindenwood’s new Like No Other brand shines in an expanded selection of Under Armour apparel and gifts for alumni, friends, and family. The bookstores also carry school supplies and other educational materials and a selection of snacks and beverages.
Faculty also have access to a groundbreaking online community called FacultyEnlight, a streamlined textbook adoption platform that combines advanced search capabilities with detailed information on course material formats, pricing, and reviews by other faculty. Ryan Guffey, Ph.D., vice president for student development, said when students enroll in courses, they have a direct link and image on textbooks, providing a “smooth and interactive experience.” Barnes & Noble has “become a destination for new and current students,” he said, and has “played an important role in new student orientation, game day support, and alumni and faculty outreach.” Lindenwood is one of 29 higher education institutions with which Barnes & Noble College partners in Missouri and Illinois, including Saint Louis University, Park University, Northwestern University, and University of Chicago. Barnes & Noble College partners with 743 campus stores nationwide. “We’re very excited to partner with Lindenwood University,” said Patrick Maloney, president of Barnes & Noble College. “We look forward to delivering a retail and digital learning experience to the Lindenwood community that will help drive affordability and academic success.” LINDENWOOD REVIEW

FIVE-YEAR DEAL WITH UNDER ARMOUR

Under Armour’s growth has been exploding worldwide, and it continues in the Midwest.

LINDENWOOD REVIEW
THE LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY SYSTEM has signed a five-year agreement with Under Armour to be the exclusive outfitter of its sports teams on the St. Charles, Mo., and Belleville, Ill., campuses.
Lindenwood University System President Michael D. Shonrock said the quality of the Under Armour product line and UA’s commitment to health and technology were influencing factors in the decision, as well as Under Armour’s appeal to college-aged students. He said Lindenwood will begin working with BSN Sports as the local distributor and provider of Under Armour products.
“We were impressed with Under Armour’s commitment to service,” said Shonrock. “Our students are thrilled, and they are already embracing this change.” Jon George, president of Lindenwood’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and men’s lacrosse player, is impressed with the change. “The success of a great program starts with great people,” George said. “After that, it is about giving those people the resources to succeed. When it comes to gear, athletes want the best. Under Armour produces high-quality apparel and gear. This is an awesome switch and a huge step in the right direction.”
Under Armour was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank when Plank made a moisture-wicking synthetic fabric t-shirt. The expansion of Under Armour’s product lines has put the company at the forefront of the emerging performance apparel industry.
Bre Zanders, SAAC vice president and women’s basketball player, said, “Student-athletes are excited about going to the Under Armour brand. For the female student-athletes, Under Armour offers a greater selection for us to choose from. As a basketball player, I’m looking forward to the Steph Curry shoes.” The student-athlete excitement was just as evident in Belleville, where Gabe Suarez, a sophomore men’s lacrosse player, couldn’t be happier with the decision. “The next couple of years with Under Armour will be amazing,” he said. “They put out great equipment and apparel. I cannot wait to see what they have in store for our university and the rest of my career here.”

DOWNTOWN FOOTPRINT AT OLD POST OFFICE Lindenwood University has signed a lease for 32,000 square feet of space at the Old Post Office at Ninth and Olive Downtown and moved its Wildwood and St. Louis accelerated degree program operations there April 1.
12
LINDENWOOD REVIEW
An agreement was signed March 8 more than quadrupling Lindenwood University’s space Downtown. Lindenwood had previously operated at a location on Washington Avenue since 2008. “We are very happy to expand our academic offerings in Downtown St. Louis,” said System President Michael Shonrock. “We outgrew our current space and wanted to strengthen our commitment to urban education, like no other.” Shonrock signed the agreement with DESCO Chairman Mark Schnuck. “We couldn’t be happier to welcome Lindenwood to the Old Post Office,” said Schnuck. “The decision has inspired us to fly banners saluting all our tenants and to upgrade the external lighting and signage on one of the region’s most significant and historic landmarks.” Lindenwood is the anchor tenant at the historic facility. Other tenants include the Missouri Court of Appeals, the St. Louis Public Library, FOCUS St. Louis, the St. Louis Business Journal, the Missouri Attorney General, the Missouri Secretary of State, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the Missouri Arts Council, and Rosemann Architects.
DESCO and DFC Group finished the restoration of the landmark Old Post Office in 2006. The Old Post Office was built in 1884 as a testiment to the strength of the United States following the Civil War. “More and more higher education institutions are seeing the benefits to expanding their schools in downtown St. Louis,” said Mayor Francis Slay. “I am very happy to welcome Lindenwood students and staff to our growing community. This commitment is a testament of Dr. Shonrock and the developers’ civic leadership that they have chosen to invest in the heart of the region.” Lindenwood University operates eight accelerated degree sites in the St. Louis region.

NEW LYNX LOGO
INTRODUCED IN BELLEVILLE There is a new level of energy on the Belleville campus, and athletics have been a large contributor with the design of a new Lynx logo that was unveiled to the campus community during a springtime celebration in the Lindenwood Auditorium. “As many of you know, Lindenwood UniversityBelleville has been experiencing a lot of changes that will help propel the university into the changing landscape of higher education,” Campus President Brett Barger told a crowd. “With that, we’ve gone through a logo redesign process to freshen the look of the logo and capture the ferocity of our Lynx athletes. So we’re all here today to celebrate these changes and exciting times.”

LINDENWOOD REVIEW
The logo was designed by Geile/Leon Marketing Communications, Lindenwood’s advertising agency. According to volleyball player and Student-Athlete Leadership Team President Mckenzie Ranson, students are excited to wear the new logo as a way to show their Lynx pride.
“This is a really important time for our university, and it was a great opportunity for us as student athletes to be part of the logo re-design process,” said Ranson. “It was really nice that the leaders here sought our opinion and considered our input. This was a great way to foster student involvement! I think these changes will enhance our experiences as students.” The logo immediately claimed a presence on the Athletics Department website and soon thereafter was integrated into marketing materials, signage, and letterhead and business cards. Barger said that he saw interest from a variety of constituents to see a new Lynx logo. The logo re-design accompanies a five-year agreement with Under Armour as the exclusive outfitter of Lindenwood sports teams on the Belleville and St. Charles campuses. Barger said the logo was a result of much feedback from students, faculty, and staff, a group of which reviewed many options before settling on the design.

LINDENWOOD/GALLUP VENTURE LIKE NO OTHER SURVEY SHOWS LINDENWOOD GRADUATES WORKING, ENGAGED ON THE JOB Lindenwood University has partnered with the Gallup organization on a three-year project to survey alumni and study graduate experiences and long-term outcomes as they pursue great jobs and great lives.
The first web survey shows Lindenwood graduates are more likely than other college graduates to be working full-time for an employer and engaged on the job. Gallup surveyed 889 adults who received bachelor’s degrees from the university between 2000 and 2015. The results of the survey, conducted Nov. 2 – Dec. 2, 2015, illustrate how many Lindenwood graduates have great jobs and great lives, said Michael D. Shonrock, president of the Lindenwood University system. Shonrock said that Lindenwood’s partnership with the Gallup organization, the only one of its kind in the St. Louis area, is a “tremendous opportunity to strengthen the value of a Lindenwood degree” and to find ways in which the institution can continuously improve. “We are focused on making sure our students and our alumni feel supported by the university,” Shonrock said. “The partnership with Gallup provides valuable information related to current and future operational, tactical, and strategic planning efforts.” Seventy-four percent of Lindenwood alumni surveyed are working full-time for an employer, higher than college graduates nationally (70 percent) and graduates from other private institutions (69 percent).
Lindenwood graduates are also slightly more likely to be engaged at work compared to college graduates nationally. Among those who are employed full-time, 41 percent of Lindenwood alumni report being engaged at work, compared to 39 percent of graduates nationally and 38 percent of alumni from private institutions. Gallup’s research indicates that employees who are engaged at work are more loyal, more productive, and more profitable than those who are not engaged or are actively disengaged. Gallup also examines areas such as well-being, and recent Lindenwood alumni have similar levels compared to their comparison groups. Lindenwood alumni from 2000-2015 are likely to say they are satisfied with their lives today (87 percent). Satisfaction levels were similar for peers nationally (84 percent) and from other private institutions (85 percent). Lindenwood showed room for improvement in a few areas, such as graduates’ emotional attachment to their alma mater as well as what Gallup refers to as the “Big Six” college experiences, which include mentorship, relationships with professors, internship experiences, extracurricular activities, and semester-long projects. Work has already begun on a second-year study to focus specifically on alumni engagement, academic advising, and semester-long projects.

HAMMOND INSTITUTE RECEIVES
$2 MILLION KOCH FOUNDATION GRANT
Lindenwood University announced in late 2015 that the Charles Koch Foundation awarded $2 million in grant funding support for the John W. Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise in the university’s Robert W. Plaster School of Business & Entrepreneurship. The grant represents the largest received in Lindenwood history. He said these funds continue to advance the Hammond Institute’s goals to foster free enterprise and civil and religious liberty through the examination of market-oriented approaches to economic and social issues. Roger Ellis, dean of the Plaster School of Business, said the grant supports ongoing research, conferences, and guest speakers at the Hammond Institute. He said the institute, which is directed by Dr. Howard Wall, used a portion of the grant funding in 2016 to hire new faculty members and an administrator.
The Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise currently comprises three centers and two initiatives: •
Center for Economics and the Environment
•
Liberty & Ethics Center
•
Duree Center for Entrepreneurship
•
The Constitution Revolution
•
Criminal Justice Reform Initiative
“We are extremely grateful to the Koch Foundation for this grant award,” said Ellis. “We’re already putting their financial support to good use advancing the goals of the Hammond Institute.”
LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY’S CENTER FOR ECONOMICS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Ranked among the World’s Top Economics Departments The Center for Economics and the Environment (CEE), which is part of the Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise, was recently ranked among the top 10 percent of all economics research departments in the world. The list included five other departments in Missouri: the research divisions of the Federal Reserve Banks of Kansas City and St. Louis, the economics departments of Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Missouri, and the Olin School of Business at Washington University. The ranking is provided by RePEc (Research Papers in Economics) and is based on the research output and citation records of over 48,000 economists representing nearly 7,300 institutions worldwide. RePEc is the primary resource among economists for bibliographic information about economics working papers and journal publications.
FOR EVENT INFORMATION AND FURTHER BACKGROUND,
Three CEE economists—director Rik Hafer and senior research fellows Howard Wall and Richard Anderson—were ranked by RePEc as being among the world’s top 5 percent in several categories.

GIVING
LEAVE YOUR LEGACY
Charitable Gift Annuity
Life Insurance
Our staff can work with you and your financial and legal advisors to plan a gift that will leave a lasting legacy at Lindenwood. Some of the more popular planned gifts are discussed below.
A charitable gift annuity frees up your assets in order to generate cash flow during your lifetime. You make an initial gift to Lindenwood, and then a set payment is paid during your lifetime or beginning at a designated time, such as retirement.
Bequests
Charitable Remainder Trust
Either the donation of a fully or partially paid policy or the purchase of a new policy naming Lindenwood University as the beneficiary can lead to a substantial deduction for you and a generous gift to Lindenwood. Lindenwood can also be named as a beneficiary of a policy that you own.
A will or trust is the easiest and most effective means to ensure that you provide for your family and that your assets will be distributed as you wish. A bequest will benefit Lindenwood upon your death, while allowing you to have use of your property during your life.
This is a managed and invested trust that provides you and/or other beneficiaries of your choosing with a stream of income for life or a period of years. If funded with appreciated property, a significant capital gains tax savings may result. A charitable remainder trust can yield substantial tax benefits.
Appreciated Real Property Donations of appreciated property can provide a generous contribution to Lindenwood and financial benefits for you.
Gifts of Securities Transfers of stock and other appreciated securities to Lindenwood can give you a substantial tax savings. Donors may receive an income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock on the date of the gift — thus reducing your taxable capital gains.

Charitable Lead Trust This is effectively the opposite of a charitable remainder trust. Instead of the donor receiving the income, Lindenwood would receive the income for a specified number of years. At the end of the trust, the remaining principal is returned to you or another person of your choosing. Charitable lead trusts can generate a substantial gift or estate tax savings, and, in some cases, you may receive a charitable income tax deduction.
Tax-Qualified Retirement Plan Gifts With careful planning, gifts involving tax-qualified retirement plan assets, such as IRAs, can reduce your taxes and allow for a charitable gift. The university will be the effective steward of your generosity. For information regarding any of these giving opportunities, please contact the Office of Development at (636)949-4908.
This information is not intended as tax, legal, or financial advice. Consult your own legal, tax, or financial professional for guidance. Gift annuities are not available in all states.
Ways JOIN THE MISSION Lindenwood University has made a difference in the lives of countless students throughout its 189-year history. Many of the opportunities received by students were made available through the generosity of alumni and friends who made gifts to the university. You are invited to have an impact on a student’s life in a variety of ways. Lindenwood has gift programs and giving societies to help support students involved in the arts, education, sciences, communications, business, and other academic, athletic, and student life programs.

Matching Gifts
Emergency Textbook Fund
Many employers make matching gifts that allow you to double your donation to the university.
The increasing cost of books, the tools of a student’s trade, can be a burden for some students. This fund eases the stress of students struggling to meet the costs of earning their degree.
Student Support Opportunities You may directly impact Lindenwood students through the following giving opportunities. Scholarships Scholarship donations of any amount assist students needing help in earning their degrees. Every year, with gifts of $25,000 or more, generous donors endow, in perpetuity, scholarships for students with exceptional merit or with financial need.
Student Academic Travel Fund Students represent Lindenwood University in the academic advancement of their disciplines by attending scholarly conferences and workshops across the country. There, they present papers and interact with scholars and practitioners in their chosen fields. This special fund helps to defray costs of travel and registration.
Honors Awards Honors award naming starts with gifts of $10,000. Donors may attend the annual Honors Award Convocation with the student recipients.

Annual Funds Gifts to the annual fund help cover the operating costs of the university, so that tuition and room and board can be kept affordable for the students. These gifts are unrestricted, which means that they are available to be used where the need is the greatest.
Capital Projects Gifts can be designated for various capital campaigns and projects currently in progress at a variety of locations on both campuses. Naming opportunities are available to recognize contributions.
