Learning Automator
Automator for Mac OS X: Visual QuickStart Guide By Ben Waldie Automator for Mac OS X: Visual QuickStart Guide uses a combination of task-based instruction and strong visuals to teach intermediate Macintosh users how to automate repetitive, timeconsuming tasks with the Automator application that is included with Mac OS X. Automator comes with many useful automated routines (called actions) preinstalled, for lots of popular applications, that do things like remove empty playlists from iTunes or add attachments to Mac Mail. The real power of Automator lies in mixing and matching these actions to have them do exactly the job you want. They're put together in a string of actions known as a workflow. Author Ben Waldie introduces readers to how Automator works, and then helps them assemble and use Automator workflows. Both beginning users who want a thorough introduction to Automator and more advanced users looking for a convenient reference will find what they need here in straightforward language, clear steps, and practical tips. www.automatedworkflows.com/books/automator_vqs10.6.html

Software Requirements Automated Workflows, LLC’s Automator actions for Snow Leopard and Lion require that the following software be installed: All Actions Mac OS X 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 AI (Illustrator) Actions Adobe Illustrator CS4, CS5, or CS5.5, CS6, CC FMP (FileMaker) Actions FileMaker Pro 7.x - 12.x ID (InDesign) Actions Adobe InDesign CS4, CS5, or CS5.5, CS6, CC PS (Photoshop) Actions Adobe Photoshop CS4, CS5, or CS5.5, CS6, CC NOTE: Our Automator actions are built with AppleScript. Since the AppleScript terminology in an application can change from version to version, a code update may be required if you upgrade your software in the future. Prior to performing an upgrade, we recommend conducting a parallel test with your solution to determine whether changes will be required. If changes are required, please consult our website at www.automatedworkflows.com for information about obtaining a potential updated version.

Installing an Action Pack Our Automator action packs are self-contained. That is, all actions are embedded within the action pack application itself. To install a set of our Automator actions, perform the following steps: •
Download the desired Automator action pack from the Mac App Store.
•
If the main action pack application does not launch automatically after it has been downloaded to your computer, then launch it. This is necessary in order to “register” its actions with Automator.
NOTE: The main action pack application must be relaunched any time an updated version of the action pack is downloaded, in order to register it with Automator. For action packs that include a large number of actions, the launch process may take a few moments to complete. •
Once the process is complete, a window will be displayed, showing a list of included actions, along with their version numbers. In addition, if this is a new installation, you will be prompted to register the action pack by entering a serial number.
Example of Main Action Pack Window
•
You may now quit the action pack application, and may begin using the actions within Automator.
NOTE: If Automator is already running, then you will need to quit Automator and re-launch it in order for the actions to appear.

Action Versions Determining the Version of an Action Pack Our action pack applications have a version number, which is incremented whenever actions within that action pack are updated. You can display the splash screen at any time by selecting About Action Pack from the action pack menu in the menu bar.
An Action Pack Version Appears on the Splash Screen
Determining the Version of an Individual Action Action versions can be viewed in the main action pack window, or within an individual action’s description area in Automator.
