125 Years of Hospital Care 4 – 8 The Sisters’ ongoing legacy at St. Cloud Hospital 50 years after relinquishing ownership

Compassionate care of the sick was central to the

ministry of Christ. Benedict, too, inspired by the gospel and the desert tradition, was passionate concerning the tending of the sick in the monastery. Perhaps Benedict was influenced by a story from the Desert Fathers which told of the importance of caring for the sick. A brother questioned an old man, saying: “Here are two brothers. One of them leads a solitary life for six days a week, giving himself pain, and the other serves the sick. Whose work does God accept with the greater favor?” The old man said, “Even if the one who withdraws for six days were to hang himself up by his nostrils, he could not equal the one who serves the sick.” (The Wisdom of the Desert Fathers) St. Benedict mandated that the care of the sick in the monastery must rank above and before all else in order that they may truly be served as Christ (RB 36:1). Following this instruction, Benedictines have engaged in serving others who are ill. The quality of care given within the community was to emanate forth in caring for the sick that lived beyond the monastery walls.

to the people of St. Cloud. When St. Benedict’s Hospital (now St. Cloud Hospital) opened in 1886, they contracted with the county to serve the poor in the area for $1 a day. From that day forward, our Sisters have applied themselves in numerous areas of health care and the education of those who serve in health care. Thus, throughout the world, God’s people have been touched by the health care ministry of St. Cloud Hospital, the St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing, St. Benedict’s Senior Community and a number of other health care initiatives sustained by those who received their first experience in the institutions founded by the Sisters. Down through the decades the Sisters have been inspired by St. Benedict’s appeal to his followers: “Go to help the troubled and console the sorrowing. Never … turn away when someone needs your love” (RB 4:18-19, 26). For 125 years this caring tradition has been a part of St. Cloud Hospital’s mission and ministry. It is with pride and gratitude that we acknowledge the valiant efforts the administration and staff of St. Cloud Hospital have demonstrated in continuing to carry forward the vision of the Sisters to truly serve the sick as Christ.

Benedictine Sisters and Friends is published three times each year by the Office of Development and Communications, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minn. The purpose of the magazine is to share the story of our Benedictine life and engage our relatives, friends, Oblates and benefactors in the mission and ministries of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict.

Pages 4 – 8 The photo above was taken inside the St. Cloud Hospital chapel. The chapel, built in 1928 and renovated in the 1970s, is an ongoing sign of the Sisters’ presence. It retains its towering stained glass windows and elaborate wood Stations of the Cross embedded into the walls, as well as Prairie Style decoration on the balcony/choir loft that complements the design of the original front door, featured on the cover of this issue. Risking All for Care Two events loom large in the 125-year history of hospital care in St. Cloud. The first is the cyclone of April 1886, which demolished Sauk Rapids and caused widespread destruction. St. Benedict’s Hospital (renamed St. Cloud Hospital in 1928), which the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict had opened in February of that year, was struggling to find patients. Cyclone of April 1886

Hospitals in that era were seen as places for dying, but when St. Benedict’s Hospital was at the center of the tornado rescue effort, the Sisters’ care convinced the residents that the hospital could be a place of healing. The Sisters’ courageous effort, working 48 hours straight until others arrived from nearby towns and the Twin Cities, is recognized as part of the ongoing heroic effort the Sisters would continue as they served the health care needs of the community. From the beginning, they were helping define hospital care. The other event is the Sisters’ sacrifices and efforts to pay off the debt of the St. Cloud Hospital (SCH) building built in 1928, on the eve of the Great

Depression. At key moments, when the hospital board has made a commitment to a large project such as the $220 million capital campaign to expand the hospital’s facilities undertaken in 2007, members have pointed to this early effort by the Sisters.

“These women took on major risks,” said Craig Broman, current chief executive officer of SCH. “They made decisions on faith in order to provide service to others. This still has an impact on our Craig Broman decision making.

It’s an inspiration when we’re reminded by board members to put the decision in the context of the significant risks taken by our founders in 1928 and earlier.” The motion to undertake this campaign was made by Sister Miriam Ardolf, who served on the board for 29 years, chaired the finance committee for 15 years and chaired the board for two years, retiring in 2011.

Mission and Values

It is the full integration of the mission of providing quality care and Benedictine values by the administrators, staff and board that has helped make SCH the awardwinning regional center for health

care it is today. That mission owes a lot to the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict, their continuing work as sponsors and active membership on the board of the hospital.

The Sisters deeded over the St. Cloud Hospital in 1964 to the St. Cloud Hospital Corporation. They remained as sponsors, guaranteeing the Catholic identity of the hospital and making sure the hospital adhered to the Ethical and Religious Directives. Eventually, the diocese took over that responsibility, but the Sisters have continued to play an active advisory role. “My observation is that the Sisters on the board have always brought to our consciousness the need to serve the poor and underserved in the community,” said Dr. Terence Pladson, president and CEO of CentraCare Health System. “That has dated back their entire 125 years, and they remind us of that responsibility in every discussion from strategy to resource allocation.” Of course, it works both ways. Sister Kara Hennes, who spent 14

years in administration at SCH (1979– 94), including vice president of nursing and patient care, compliments the lay administrators for their appreciation of the role of the Sisters and their ability to maintain the mission. maintain the mission. S. Kara remarked that this began with the hospital’s first lay administrator, Gene Bakke, who was appointed as CEO in 1967, and continued on through John Frobenius to the current CEO Craig Broman. “The lay administrators have kept alive the values and been more articulate about them to the general public than we could have been ourselves,” stated S. Kara. That legacy has only expanded as the hospital has expanded. According to Dr. Pladson, “In our 1995 effort to begin and grow CentraCare, we have maintained

John Frobenius with Sister Dolores Super, 1987

the link to the heritage of the Sisters because of the high value that the legacy and philosophy bring to our organization.”

The hospital’s values hang on the walls of this overtly Catholic institution, and spell out CHRIST: Collaboration, Hospitality, Respect, Integrity, Service and Trusteeship. At CentraCare System, which does not maintain Catholic sponsorship, the core values are: Patient-centered, Integrity, Collaboration, Compassion and Stewardship. In both lists it is easy to see the Benedictine values. “Because of our heritage,” says Bret Reuter, director of mission and spiritual care, “our employees feel uniquely empowered to care for the whole person—that includes genuine compassion.” Compassion and the motto from the Rule of Benedict to “treat all as Christ” genuinely drive the staff of St. Cloud Hospital, and the patients feel this. “We hear about the centrality of hospitality at St. Cloud Hospital from our patients and their families,” said Reuter. Fall 2011 I www.sbm.osb.org

5

But how is this culture so rooted in Benedictine values maintained? “We work at it, with visual reminders and modeling from leaders—it is part of our customer service standards,” Reuter said. It is also clearly essential to the leaders of the organization. “Our values and mission guide what we do,” said Broman. “We have specific times we’re reminded of our heritage, such as mission week, the yearly mission calendar we publish and the efforts of Bret Reuter. But also, the presence of Sisters (on the board) keeps us grounded in that mission.”

Caring for Those on the Margins There are three significant ways the Benedictine mission underlies care at SCH. First, from the very beginning, the Sisters had a commitment to people on the margins. This included care of the elderly and of those who could not afford care.

did during the Sisters’ transition out of caring for the elderly in the 1970s.

This way of thinking also guided the establishment of the MidMinnesota Family Clinic, an outreach to the uninsured, underinsured and underserved populations in the area that began in 1989. When S. Dolores was advocating for this clinic, a collaboration between a variety of community agencies under the direction of the hospital, CEO John Frobenius wasn’t sure about the idea. It was a big risk in a time of economic challenges. Medicare payments were decreasing, the hospital was struggling with insurance contracts, and there was a need for renovations and upgrades of facilities. S. Dolores’s response was, “John, we cannot not do it. We have to do it.”

This process also underlines a comment made by Sister Dolores Super, who was chair of the hospital board from 1984 –94. “When Benedictines come to an area, the first thing they do is set down roots. Then they ask what needs the local church may have to which they could respond. Finally, they look around and find out who might join them in the ministry.” This is exactly what S. Evin

The empowerment that Bret Reuter spoke about and pervasiveness of this mission can be seen even at the level of the laundry. Place of Hope in St. Cloud arranges church outreach to the homeless through its Church of the Week program. SCH launders all the blankets used in that program so they

The Sisters began running facilities that specifically cared for the elderly in 1900; before this time, long-term residents stayed at the hospital. In the 1970s, when the Sisters found they had to leave that sector of health care, Sister Evin Rademacher, the prioress, called together the possible partners to make sure services were in place for care of the elderly. Working with Catholic Charities, the St. Cloud Hospital and others, the solution was St. Benedict Senior Community. The first administrators were Sisters Rita Budig and Juliana Lauer. compassionate and whole-person approach to treating these people.” Today, SCH offers a comprehensive continuum of mental health care options and programs for treating alcohol and substance abuse. Sister Joan Felling, a chaplain at the hospital, works with some of these groups.

for the first major expansion of the hospital since 1928, the definition of hospital care was again stretched, this time to include an in-patient mental health unit. Its first director was Sister Madonna Kuebelbeck. Sister Paula Revier served at the hospital in several leadership roles from 1956-88, part of that time as the director of the nursing division that included surgery, admissions, central supply, the school of nursing and volunteers. She described how the new mental health unit provided an essential service. “As a young head nurse, if you had people who were depressed, suicidal or had alcohol and chemical dependency issues, the only option was a state hospital. There was a dreadful need for a more

Sister Dolores Super

Even today, S. Dolores talks passionately about the statistics behind the decision: “There were 17,000 uninsured in a 30-mile radius,” and the great good the clinic did from the very start. “In the first year, the clinic averaged 21 persons a day, 80% of them women and children,” she said. Today the daily average number of patients is 75. She also points to the two grants they received for start-up costs, the volunteer work of many doctors,

Treating the Whole Person

From the start, the hospital has also put an emphasis on caring for the whole person. In 1928, massage, solariums, hydrotherapy and other “cutting edge” treatments were implemented by the Sister staff. Patients had access to gardens and outdoor spaces when possible.

In 1966, when ground was broken

Sister Georganne Burr, the first woman Catholic chaplain in a Minnesota hospital, was instrumental in creating the Spiritual Care Department. She worked on a team with Father John McManus, Rev. Al Stangl and the first protestant chaplain, Rev. Richard Tetzloff, to integrate spiritual care with the therapeutic care provided by other units of the hospital, particularly in the areas of grief counseling, mental health and substance abuse. S. Georganne, Fr. Al and Fr. John went on to establish St. Therese Center, a grief counseling center in St. Cloud. Bret Reuter also remarked on this strength in the hospital’s mission. “The spiritual care department is integrated in the hospital,” he said. “We are welcomed and recognized as part of the care team by physicians, nurses and other professionals. Throughout the hospital, we are committed to caring for the whole person, body and spirit.” S. Kara sees this strength as reflective of Benedictines as well. “All members of a team are respected,” she said. “There is more of a team approach. We practice that as a religious community, and I see that same spirit in the care at SCH.” Today, Sister Ruth Stanley is an important member of the St. Cloud Hospital Heart Center, which received this designation in 1992. S. Ruth provides an ongoing link to the “whole person” approach to hospital care. An expert on the relationship between meditation/ spirituality and heart health, S. Ruth works with patients on lifestyle changes and practices that go well beyond treating symptoms and

disease. Sister Ruth is a relatively recent addition to the hospital staff in contrast to Sister Beatrice Eiynck, who recently retired after 33 years as a staff nurse in the Rehabilitation Department; her resignation ends the continuous presence of Sisters as floor staff nurses for 125 years.

Roles of Women

The St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing marked a great beginning for the Sisters in empowering women in health care. “The fact that the Sisters brought nursing education into the community, providing an enormous benefit to the community and some of the highest skilled jobs for women in this area, is quite astounding,” said Dr. Pladson. “To start a school of nursing while running a hospital and college is quite an accomplishment.” He also pointed to the fact that the school developed the Benedictine values in lay women and men throughout the community. Most of the nurses trained there did not become Sisters, but went on to practice Benedictine values in their care of patients elsewhere. Although the Sisters relinquished ownership of the hospital in 1964, they continued in key leadership roles within the hospital for decades. Under the direction of Gene Bakke, the hospital was reorganized into five divisions, two of which were led by Sisters. Sister Colleen Haggerty was director of general services

for the hospital, which meant she oversaw the major expansion and renovations from 1967–75. “That time was personally very growthful for me,” said S. Colleen, who began as a dietitian. Her education with Sister Mary John Sweeney included a onehour course in reading blueprints; this came in handy. She enjoyed overseeing the staff that provided operations, including food service and the laundry, and “I always advocated for the rights of all employees, including the laundry workers. Those people are essential—doctors and nurses are important, too,” she said. As board members, Sisters continue on active committees, including the Quality and Patient Safety Committee, on which both S. Paula and S. Kara have served. It is here, S. Kara said, that she’s seen staff work to continually raise the bar of quality care and promote a team approach. What was once primarily nursing’s responsibility is now a chief responsibility of the board. They do more than oversee the financial well-being of the hospital— they’re involved in promoting care. S. Kara pointed to two important women leaders, Mary Buhl, who for approximately 35 years advanced quality analysis of care, and Linda Chmielewski, the vice president for operations and nursing. Many directors of specialty centers at the

early 300 guests attended the all-school reunion of Saint Benedict’s High School held Saturday, May 21, on the monastery campus and at Gorecki Dining and Conference Center. The high school operated in St. Joseph from 1880-1973, most of those years as a boarding school. The main events of the reunion were a prayer service, social hour and banquet. At the banquet, Sister Carol Berg spoke about the history of the school. “Catalogue descriptions of courses stressed that the most important reason for the existence of the school was ‘to form the character of the students.’ Over the decades, the catalogues emphasized that education concerned the whole person; heart and soul, as well as mind and hand, must be developed.”

That attention to character was the basis for the remarks by Sister Nancy Bauer, class of 1971, and keynote banquet speaker Kathleen Hall Jamieson, class of 1964. S. Nancy emphasized the importance of being part of a faith community during high school and the ways that faith has sustained her in years following.

Jamieson, a professor at the Annenberg School of Journalism and director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, also spoke about the strength of community. Her remarks focused on the ways Saint Benedict’s High School shaped its graduates to be leaders and, importantly, to lead differently. Both through academic challenge, but also by the examples of Sisters in leadership positions who nurtured talents (and even “nontalents”) and modeled loving community, Jamieson said, she and her classmates were prepared to grasp the opportunities available for women in the 1960s and beyond. They were able to “navigate difficult situations” ethically and with confidence, she said, despite the sexism they faced. Because of their education, they were able to create workplaces, neighborhoods and families grounded in the Benedictine values of community and respect for others. Watch a video of Kathleen Hall Jamieson’s remarks, visit a photo gallery or enjoy other materials from the reunion at www.sbm.osb.org/sbhs. Fall 2011 I www.sbm.osb.org

2011 Mother Benedicta Riepp Award Winner Margaret “Margy” Hughes Susan Sink

When Margy Hughes came to work in the physical education department at the College of Saint Benedict in 1966, almost all of the faculty and staff were Sisters. Margy felt special to be one of five or so laypeople who got to work closely with them. It was a feeling she remembered from her childhood growing up in Hibbing. Her family’s house was opposite the Catholic school and Benedictine Sisters’ convent, “so we were close by when they needed something.” The children in her family would be called to help and felt special to get to know the Sisters more personally.

The rite of installation was conducted in a private service Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with the Sisters, S. Michaela’s family and members of the Sisters’ federation in attendance. More than 500 people attended a public Eucharist celebrating the installation on this Feast of the Ascension, followed by a reception. Bishop John Kinney of the Diocese of St. Cloud presided. Retired Bishop Joseph Charron, CPPS, of the Diocese of Des Moines, Iowa, was the homilist.

Bishop Charron referred to the conference statement “Wisdom from the Tradition” composed by the the Conference of Benedictine Prioresses in his homily: “A community comprised of mutual listeners is a community hospitable to peace and charity. Harmony breathes where people truly listen, respect and respond to one another. The Holy Spirit is set free in this kind of community.” The prayer of the people on that installation day was that the Holy Spirit will be set free, not only in Sister Michaela but in the entire religious

What she remembered of the Sisters who educated her, members of St. Scholastica Monastery in Duluth, was that “they were people who did things. They were real people. Some of the teachers would play softball and kickball with us at recess.” Seeing how the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict get things done and have always gotten things done, particularly in service to their community, has inspired Margy to build community, too.

In a small community you have to work together and to have pride in something.” So far, she says, that community effort has been most in evidence at the Catholic church, built with stones from local farmers’ fields. However, with growth and new people coming in who are not Catholic, people are looking for ways to engage in “The Sisters are always so organized town life. “The older community-minded when it comes to doing things. L to r: Jana Graczyk, Sarah Schwalbach, Ashley Irons and Maggie Niebur

BWSC Sponsors Four Volunteers Four 2011 graduates from the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) are currently serving with Benedictine communities abroad as members of the Benedictine Women Service Corps (BWSC).

Sarah Schwalbach and Jana Graczyk are spending the year at Monasterio Santa Escolastica in Humacao, Puerto Rico, teaching in the monastery’s K–8 school, Colegio San Benito. Ashley Irons and Maggie Niebur are living with the Sisters of St. Agnes Monastery in Chipole, Tanzania. St. Agnes is a monastery with many ministries for the local people. They run both a high school and an elementary school and operate an orphanage. They have a dispensary and are building a hospital on their property. Additionally, the Sisters raise all their own meat and vegetables on a farm on their property. The volunteers will be assisting with the orphanage and education ministries. The four women completed two weeks of orientation at Saint Benedict’s Monastery in July before leaving for 10 months of service. The BWSC extends the mission of the Sisters of Saint Benedict’s Monastery by providing young women with opportunities for service and integration of the Benedictine values introduced during their liberal arts education into their personal and professional lives. For more information, or to follow the volunteers’ blogs, visit www.sbm.osb.org/bwsc. Note that we’ll be fundraising for this program again on November 16 as part of Give to the Max Day. Last year, with a matching fund of $10,000, we were able to raise $25,000 in one day for the BWSC! Look for more information on our home page as the date gets closer.

At a small gathering on July 21, Angie McCormick of Indiana (right) and Tamra Thomas of St. Joseph, Minnesota, (left) were welcomed into the community as affiliates. Tammy Shoemaker (not pictured) of Louisville, Kentucky, has also been accepted as an affiliate but was not present for the ceremony. Affiliate is the first stage of formation. It is followed by the postulancy, novitiate and a period of four years of formation after first profession before final profession and full membership in the community.

Currently, Sister Karen Rose and Sister Julianne Gilbert are completing the final stage of formation. Both will be eligible to make their final profession in July 2012.

Saint Benedict’s Monastery sponsors several opportunities throughout the year for discerning women between the ages of 18 and 45. The next one is October 8, 2011. A private visit can also be arranged at any time. For more information on vocations at the monastery, visit www.sbm.osb.org/ vocations.

Sister Mara Faulkner won the 2011 Foley Prize from America magazine for her poem, “Things I Didn’t Know I Loved.” This prestigious prize is offered annually for a single poem and the contest is judged by America’s poetry editor, James Torrens, SJ. S. Mara is the author of the memoir Going Blind, which was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award. She teaches English at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University. The poem can be read on America’s Website.

Sister Delores’s third volume of hymns, And Every Breath, a Song, was published this summer by GIA Publications. The volume includes 72 new hymn texts set to well-known tunes and tunes by contemporary composers. In July, S. Delores presented her book at the annual conference of the Hymn Society in Colorado Springs, Colo., and will present on it again at the St. Cloud Diocesan Ministry Day on September 26.

On July 22, the Diocese of St. Cloud presented Sister Clare Witzman with the 2011 Humanae Vitae Award. The award is given to a person who promotes the teachings of the Catholic Church on human life and sexuality. Nominated especially for her dedication to the pro-life movement, S. Clare has been an advocate for life in both subtle and highly visible ways ranging from engaging in everyday conversations to attending pro-life rallies. S. Clare retired from Cathedral High School this spring after 55 years of teaching English in the classroom.

3G Camps Girls, God and Good Times, the Benedictine summer camps for girls in grades 4–8, had a successful program. The 126 campers and 25 counselors arrived ready to play and pray together. The grounds were full of laughter, camp songs and more than a few human pyramids! Campers say they especially enjoy the activities with the Sisters, including Q&A sessions, prayer, ice cream socials, arts and crafts and even Flamingo Bingo at Saint Scholastica Convent. One camper evaluation read: “I could go on and on about how awesome this camp is, but the best thing was that we became closer to God and made new friends, including the counselors and Sisters!” For information on 2012 camps, contact Sister Lisa Kittock at [email protected] or 320-363-7114.

During this time, the public is invited to enter the chapel by the side doors, preferably the south side near the statue of St. Joseph. Unfortunately, these entrances are not handicap accessible. Sisters can assist those needing to use an elevator via the residence halls. Already the renovation has uncovered a big surprise, namely the foundations of the former Loretto Hall. Also, some additional work is being done on the south section of the tunnel which, when excavated, was found to be of the original stone and in need of reinforcement.

Despite a challenging season for most gardeners in the area, Common Ground Garden, the Sisters’ Community Supported Agriculture operation, is having a banner year. Weekly bags of fresh produce are Virginia Zenzen and Sister Phyllis provided to 70 subscribers Plantenberg picking beans from mid-June through midOctober. Additional produce is sold at the St. Joseph Farmer’s Market and donated to the monastery, St. Joseph Food Shelf and St. Cloud Food Shelf. Production gardener Kate Ritger reports that they grow roughly 100 different varieties, as well as cover crops, on the 1.5 acre site. Still to come: potatoes, watermelons, pumpkins and winter squash! In addition, this year the subscribers enjoyed a pickling session with Sister Theresa Lodermeier and yoga in the garden! Your Spark Rekindles Us FY 2010 – 2011

Gen Maiers, OSB

Gratitude! Thanks! Joy! Appreciation! Wonder! These words pop into my mind as I reflect on our past fiscal year (July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2011). The celebration of our 14th Donor Appreciation Event on Friday, August 19, helped etch those words clearly into my heart, and Albert Schweitzer left words which further capture our sentiments:

“Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”

Where do we begin to cite the many ways you have rekindled the spark in our lives: your prayers, your service and your donations? Who can count the blessings coming our way because of your involvement in our ministries? At the Donor Appreciation Event, Sister Michaela Hedican, prioress, recalled some of the tangible things that you made possible.

Because of your contributions to the Benedictine Women Service Corps, Maggie Niebur (Miesville, Minn.), and Ashley Irons (Twin Falls, Idaho) are serving in Chipole, Tanzania; Sarah Schwalbach (River Falls, Wis.) and Jana Graczyk (Lake Elmo, Minn.) will give 10 months of service in Humacao, Standing: Ashley Irons (l) and Maggie Puerto Rico. This new Niebur (r); Seated: Sarah Schwalbach (l) ministry has global and Jana Graczyk (r) implications. Our hope is to be able to expand it to more countries, as well as reaching out to the marginalized in our own. Maggie and Ashley are in a very rural area, leaving behind conveniences they had at home and college. Both will be teaching English in the secondary and elementary school, as well as lending a hand in the monastery bakery and doing whatever is needed. Sarah and Jana began teaching classes the day after they arrived in Humacao. Not only did they plunge

right into the school culture, they also joined a running team to get to know young Puerto Ricans. The BWSC is an opportunity to integrate the Benedictine/Gospel values learned in their liberal arts education as these women live and work alongside the Sisters in a Benedictine monastery. They will grow personally, professionally and spiritually and, in the words of one of our volunteers, will “come back as better people.” They feel confident that you, our donors, regard them as your personal representatives who donate to BWSC in view of an immeasurable return on your investment for years to come.

Calendars tell us we are moving rapidly toward November 16, 2011, Give to the Max Day in Minnesota; it’s a one-day effort to raise gifts online for the Benedictine Women Service Corps. Please check our website for more information as the date approaches. Would you be interested in helping with a matching fund, and thereby encouraging others to give as well? If so, please contact me.

The prominent focus of this year’s appeals is the ministry to our elderly Sisters at Saint Scholastica Convent. In fact, these efforts clearly carry out the teaching of St. Benedict asking that “special care must always be given to the sick and elderly.” In visiting Saint Scholastica, one cannot help but be touched by these Sisters’ warmth and wealth of wisdom; letters from relatives and friends confirm this over and over again. It is true, an increase in the cost of care is before us, but the blessing they are in our lives is an immeasurable compensation. And you support us wonderfully in our care for them. Thank you! The big “Thank you!” pictured at the right comes not only from the 94 Sisters at Saint Scholastica but also from the hearts of the entire monastic community. You, in your goodness, made possible the following improvements!

• A huge project is the safety call system that enables nurses/aides to respond more quickly when a Sister needs immediate attention and makes living at Saint Scholastica safer for Sisters with memory loss.

• Improvements made to the chapel sound system will enhance the prayer life at Saint Scholastica in making the spoken Word of God more easily understood. An added feature will bring closed circuit TV to Sisters unable to attend the chapel service.

Don and Marion Hall

Sisters to prayer; it reminds all who hear it that the Sisters are praying for them and for the needs of the world. The tower is now a reality, constructed in August and completed for the blessing in September, thanks to the magnanimity of Don and Marion Hall. They are specifically honoring their first and second grade teachers at St. Mary’s in St. Cloud, Sister Suzanne Helmin and Sister Idamarie Primus, as representatives of all the Benedictine Sisters. S. Suzanne was thrilled and remembered Don as her first grade student; she asked about the bell tower a few days before her death on August 11.

We Sisters could all tell stories of how donors’ sparks have lit a flame within us. All are touched by your remarkable generosity this past year, as well as over the years. Can you believe that this past year we had 4,022 donors, the largest number ever, or that we received $1.4 million in donations? (By the way, the bell tower donation will be recorded in the 2011–12 fiscal year.) Humbly we repeat a donor’s remark: “I know that you are wise stewards of your resources and that is why my wife and I will continue to give to the Sisters!”

The first graph, top right, shows how the money was allocated from the donors: $665,751, unrestricted; $750,873, designated projects; $6,206, gifts in kind (non-cash donations, e.g., donated professional services). Total: $1,422,830

The graph below it illustrates how our donors’ money was allocated: $665,751, used for ministry support; $711,610, set aside temporarily for projects until completed or for funds such as the Benedictine Women Service Corps (BWSC); $39,263, retirement; $6,206, gifts in kind. We are grateful beyond words for the many ways you continue to spark a flame within us!

Partners in Ministry Volunteer Program The Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict and faithful volunteers make a fantastic partnership.

Jean Schwartz, OSB, (r) and Marina Schlangen, OSB (l)

Every week the Sisters say, “What would we do without our faithful volunteers?” Sisters Marina Schlangen and Jean Schwartz coordinate volunteers at our two locations: Saint Scholastica Convent in St. Cloud and Saint Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph. Our volunteers help sustain a variety of monastic efforts, including gardening, driving, office work, computer database, special events, visiting elderly Sisters, museum research, assembling mailings, camp counseling, delivering mail, serving as host/hostess and sewing.

The theme for our Annual Volunteer Recognition Event this year was: “Share the Fruits.” St. Paul wrote to the Galatians: “Live by the Spirit and you will experience love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Gal 5:22). Volunteers have told us they feel surrounded by these fruits when they come to offer their gift of service. Team leaders and Sisters working with volunteers also say they experience these good fruits of the volunteers among us. Fruitful action includes giving of one’s resources and time. In 2010, we had 9,580.75 hours of service at Saint Benedict’s Monastery and 2,612 hours at Saint Scholastica Convent. Is that a lot of good fruit or what? Our Partners in Ministry Volunteer Program recognizes the importance of involving volunteers in new roles and responsibilities, supporting flexibility in assignments, asking volunteers to use their professional skills and involving volunteers in managing projects. To learn more, contact S. Jean Schwartz at 320-363-7105 or S. Marina Schlangen at 320 -251-2225.

“Do not refrain from speaking at the proper moment and do not hide your wisdom. For wisdom becomes known through speech and education through the words of the tongue” (Sirach 4:23-24).

Sister Cordis Gaebel was both an educator and orator, but in a somewhat untraditional way. In the classroom, she spent many years teaching mathematics. When teaching, she would add instruction about respectful living to her students while subtracting their fears about math. Her classroom humor and quick wit multiplied many a student’s knowledge of a subject on which many are divided. Outside of the classroom, S. Cordis was a learner herself. Her quest for knowledge never ceased. She was never afraid to ask a question. According to her friends, family and fellow community members, she would probe a topic from every angle. Whether the conversation focused on a community decision or world issues, S. Cordis was tenacious in seeking information and generous in sharing her views.

Her love for God was very evident, too. S. Cordis faithfully prayed with her Sisters until she was no longer physically able to do so. Her talks with God were Sister Cordis winning in a game of cards with Sister Clara Bechtold. sacred, and most likely (because of her lively gift of being inquisitive), also sprinkled with questions.

Following her adventurous pilgrimage to Medjugorje, S. Cordis loved to tell the story. While many would use pictures, Sister Cordis could illustrate the trip through her words. And for those words, and for her many others, she will be deeply missed. Fall 2011 I www.sbm.osb.org

“Monastic life is a model of calm, serenity, evenness, and moderation. It’s a matter of accepting life as it flows, with its tragedies and sadness, as well as its positive things.”

Those words from Sister Berno Flint describe her philosophy of living the community life that monasticism requires. S. Berno lived these words not only during her life as a Benedictine Sister, but all throughout her 101 years.

Raised in a loving, prayerful family, young Agnes, named after the parish saint, cherished life on the farm near Roscoe. S. Berno was proud of her German roots. Sister Malachy loved the Minnesota Twins. Her dedication to the baseball team was so loyal that even in her final days she still found enough strength to ask, “How did the Twins do yesterday?”

However, following the progress of a Twins season was not the only thing to which S. Malachy was devoted. She was a listener, a doer and a very hard worker, willing to give all for the sake of Christ. Born in St. Croix County, Wis., S. Malachy grew up knowing that in order to succeed in life, she would need to be focused and flexible. Her family moved often and was known for a strong work ethic.

Her pleasant, joyous outlook was like a ray of sunlight wherever she was. For more than 60 years, S. Malachy remained faithful in prayer, community life and service. And, we will not forget her lifelong love for the Minnesota Twins!

“Success comes not by always doing what one likes, but to like what one must do.” Although life was not easy for Sister Elvan, she often used this motto to help her along the way.

At age 11, when her mother was sick, S. Elvan became the caregiver for her five younger siblings. During this time, she often could be seen playing the role of teacher and, at an elaborate altar constructed by the children, “playing Sister” in their church services in a homemade religious habit.

She grew up going to public schools, with her parents teaching her in the Catholic faith. Shortly after her graduation from high school, S. Malachy entered Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Here, she began to teach the first grade, something she would end up doing for 35 years. On retiring from teaching the little ones whom she dearly loved, S. Malachy spent time in the kitchen at Saint Scholastica and in the secretarial office at Saint Benedict’s. Renowned as a

Upon the advice of her mother, S. Elvan completed high school before joining the monastery. In 1932, she became a postulant at Saint Benedict’s Monastery and soon began a long career teaching 4th and 5th grades and music. S. Elvan was very creative and brought this gift to her classroom. She is probably most known for her “button Madonna,” a large portrait of the Virgin Mary adorned with hundreds of buttons, no two alike. Whenever

students finished a task, S. Elvan would send them to glue a button on the Madonna. This piece still hangs in Our Lady of Lourdes parish church in Little Falls, Minn. S. Elvan was very proud of her Polish heritage. She loved to pray, speak and sing in Polish. In 1976, she traveled to Poland with two of her sisters and had the thrill of meeting several cousins.

Toward the end of her life, S. Elvan wrote letters to the elderly and homebound and published a monthly newsletter about Polish history; this publication was sent to people across the United States and even Poland. Fall 2011 I www.sbm.osb.org

Nivard (Mary Ann) Neft, OSB

April 1, 1922 – August 7, 2011

From an early age, Sister Nivard Neft had a desire to serve others. Growing up in Shooks, Minn., near Bemidji, she got to know Sister Ottilia Heibel, a member of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict working with the Native American population. At age 18, S. Nivard simply got on a bus and showed up at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. She had not even visited or written for information. “I just came,” she said. A childhood in the country also nurtured S. Nivard’s love of nature. She took one year off from school to herd cattle with the dog. She also picked blueberries, blackberries, wild grapes and currants in the woods. S. Nivard’s desire to serve, combined with her sharp mind, led her to become a certified medical technologist. From 1959 to 1978, S. Nivard lived, studied and worked in Utah, earning a PhD in biochemistry as the first Catholic Sister to enroll at Utah State University in Logan. While working in Ogden, Utah, she also explored the outdoors. She often climbed mountains and foothills with Sister Jonathan Herda, even going above the clouds to look for the rainbows appearing below. 34

When she returned to teach chemistry at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, S. Nivard served on the Monastery Land Task Team and became a wonderful advocate for the environment. She could name a wide variety of prairie flowers and grasses. S. Nivard also knew great suffering, without relief, due to RLS, restless leg syndrome. She found incredible strength in prayer and her Sisters’support.

Sister Suzanne Helmin died on Thursday, August 11, 2011. A full remembrance will be included in our next issue.

ister Germaine Gagnon began offering foot care to the Sisters in January 2001. Her primary ministry had been hospice care, from which she retired in 1999 after 18 years. Responding to an opening left when Sister Edna Otte died, S. Germaine taught herself and had a brief apprenticeship in foot care. She works from a wellstocked cart she outfitted herself and her patients now have the use of a used podiatry chair, donated by a St. Cloud podiatrist. Over 60 Sisters come for foot care every month, and S. Germaine sees 4–6 patients a day. She is assisted by Caren Heinen, RN, who works on Wednesdays. “I look on foot care as a sacramental,” said S. Germaine. “Washing of feet has been a tradition of the Jews as a sign of hospitality. In Jewish society it was the servants who washed the feet of their masters. Jesus, however, washed the feet of his disciples. … For me, giving foot care to the Sisters is an expression of Christ’s love for us. Jesus asks us to walk with him in love and humble service. We walk daily with Christ in our journey to heaven.” The Sisters appreciate the care and professionalism S. Germaine brings to her position. “I haven’t cut off a single toe yet!” she joked.

ister Madonna Niebolte, who celebrated her 60th anniversary with the community in 2010, serves as assistant to the nurse. She gives Sisters whirlpool baths and attends to Sisters in the two recuperation rooms, including providing tray service. She assists the nurse in finding Sisters, delivering messages and medicines and running any necessary errands. “We could not function without her,” said Karen Minnerath, RN, part-time nursing staff. “She is our right-hand person.” “It is a great joy for me to be caring for the sick,” said S. Madonna, who is beginning her 16th year in the nurse’s office at the monastery after 10 years serving at Saint Scholastica. “It was hard for me to leave teaching,” she said, “but to be able to help people and to see that they’re taken care of is wonderful. I love my job.”
