MobileIron manages 1200 Android tablets at the CYP in Switzerland

The Swiss Center for Young Professionals in Banking is taking an innovative approach to training young banking professionals by adopting mobile devices and a secure cloud storage solution for their Learning Management System CYPnet. The training center uses MobileIron's platform for Enterprise Mobility Management implemented by MobileIron's partner Swisscom.

Documents for classroom courses at the Center for Young Professionals in Banking are made available at precisely 8.30 am on the Center’s secure cloud where they can be downloaded, worked on, and saved by the trainees. Since 2012 this specialized training center for major Swiss banks has made all documents, exercises, tasks, and presentations available in electronic format via the exclusive app MyCYP. Paper workbooks have been replaced by Samsung Galaxy 10.1 2 tablets and the MyCYP app manages the trainees’ access to CYP data. All this is filed in an intranet, the CYPnet, which can be accessed from any number of devices, such as bank workstations.

The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 2 Android tablet is equipped with a data SIM card with 500 megabytes per month so that trainees can study in a truly mobile way. Internet access is therefore available at any time. Students can access data on the way to work and on the way home from class. The tablets and the data SIM card are supplied by MobileIron's partner Swisscom, who recommended the implementation of California-based MobileIron's platform as the management system for the CYP devices and apps. “The MobileIron platform is a global technological leader, because it was designed for the mobile IT sector from the start,” said Alois Freidhof, Product Manager for Mobile Device Services at Swisscom. In the case of CYP, MobileIron‘s ability to secure and manage the Android operating system for business use was key. Ronny Wallnöfer, Future Learning Project Manager at CYP, pointed out that the MobileIron platform “is also a security application that checks that only approved apps are installed and reports any resulting breaches.” And, if one of the trainees should lose their tablet, whether through theft or loss, CYP uses MobileIron to delete the data and documents on the tablet. Thomas Fahrni, Head of the Administration and Finance Department and member of the CYP executive board, explains the selection of service provider Swisscom: “We wanted devices that would work with our cloud regardless of location or time, which is also why we used the 3G card.

We also wanted a vendor who would provide both a secure public wireless LAN infrastructure and manage remote services in the mobile sector. This is why Swisscom was ideal for our needs.” Swisscom, an ICT service provider, has made the following components available to the CYP training center: enterprise mobile management system; tablet rental, delivery and replacement; public wireless LAN (PWLAN) infrastructure for secure hotspots; and 3G data SIM cards with fixed monthly data volumes. Fahrni estimates the project costs for CYP as follows: 0.73 million Euros were spent on developing the Learning Management System and the central in-house MyCYP app, a further 0.57 million Euros on the course content, in addition to accruing running costs of 440 working days per annum totaling approximately 0.2 million Euros.

1200 Samsung tablets managed by MobileIron It was critical for Ronny Wallnöfer, the CYP Future Learning Project Manager, to be able to implement granular security policies. The 1200 tablets contain personal and training documents and other data that must be protected. Documents and information are generally saved in the CYPnet file, where they are associated with the training level of each student, a specific learning topic, and the relevant CYP module. This foundation enables the trainees build up their own personal knowledge base that they can continue to expand over the course of their careers. At the same time, they also have the opportunity to send documents to the CYP teacher in order to have them comment on a piece of work, or to deliver an assignment that is due.

The constant Internet connection of the tablets creates new possibilities designing classroom courses. Trainees can in real-time compare offers from various banks with each other, access current stock market and exchange rates or obtain information on security features. Students are free to use the tablet outside of class to prepare for or to review a CYP module, and tablet use is mandatory in CYP classroom courses. This ensures that digital learning and media are used to the fullest extent possible, and that students are familiar and comfortable with the latest electronic media and technology. In addition to teaching professional skills, the CYP modules promote methodological analysis as well as social and media skills using independent and self-directed learning. In addition to technology partners Swisscom, MobileIron, and CYPnet operator Crealogix, CYP has affiliated partners from the fields of education and psychology. Teaching aids publisher Compendio, the publisher of the previous lesson material Banking Today 2.0, is taking over the production of the enhanced eBooks which are set to replace the paper books. The Educational Innovation Skills Center of the Institute of Business Education and Educational Management (WPHSG) of the University of St. Gallen are responsible for the pedagogic and scientific monitoring of the project.

The enhanced eBook expands the lesson material to include multimedia. Video and web-based exercise elements are integrated into the digital text. And, of course, students can make notes and place bookmarks in the enhanced eBook. “Our initial experience shows that improvements can still be made in terms of preparation and user-friendliness,” said Ronny Wallnöfer, “but overall we are on the right track.”

Tablet use is not limited to CYP modules and classroom usage. In addition to the MyCYP app, other free apps are installed that students may find useful in their daily work at banks and schools such as Evernote, which synchronizes notes across various computers and mobile devices. “As this app is, however, not compatible with the banking environment, we recommend that students use Evernote as a notepad for the CYP modules and class,” said Ronny Wallnöfer. “In general, all categories of apps are permitted in the CYP environment, only gaming apps have been prohibited.”

An even wider variety of apps in future The number of apps is set to increase significantly in the coming years. With MobileIron, the CYP is confident that it will always be able to adopt the latest mobile technology, and will be able to reliably and securely implement new and innovative learning ideas.
