Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association League Policy on Alcohol and Tobacco Passed April 22, 2009 Alcohol and tobacco products are prohibited at all CCAA events. CCAA swimming is an organized children’s sporting competition. As such, in keeping with the policies of USA swimming, and all other organized children’s sporting leagues, the use of alcohol and tobacco are prohibited at CCAA swim meets. The CCAA recognizes that many of our member pools are located at country clubs that service patrons other than those attending the swim meet. The league expects those teams to restrict access to the pool deck area for people who are being served alcohol or using tobacco products. Direct contact with the swimmers and the pool deck area is to be restricted.
Carolyn Y. Keller Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is given in memory of Carolyn Y Keller—an elementary school teacher who combined her passion for teaching with her love of swimming and served as a swim coach for over 22 years. Carolyn’s SC swimming career started on the Quail Arbor swim team in 1980. Her career as a swimmer ended in her junior year in high school as a result of severe knee injuries playing “powder-puff” football and softball. She became the assistant coach at Quail Arbor that year, and the rest (as they say) is history. She became head coach for Quail Arbor until she went to serve as assistant coach at Richard Quick’s (women’s Olympic coach) summer swim camps at Stanford University. When Richard retired, she went on to become a year-round assistant coach for the Southern Marlins Racing Team affiliated with the City of Charleston. She also served as the assistant coach of the Pinewood Prep swim team in 2007, and was the head coach of the Summerville High School Swim Team at the time of her unexpected death in 2009. Her life was a shining example of servant leadership to her students and her swimmers. The purpose of the Carolyn Y Keller Memorial Scholarship initiative is to provide an active Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association (CCAA) swimmer who has demonstrated a love of swimming and servant leadership on her/his team, campus and/or in the community with financial resources to help defray educational expenses for their first year in college. This award will be made annually to a rising senior. To be eligible, a swimmer must have participated in CCAA the entire season of award and have been a CCAA swimmer at least one other year. Additionally the swimmer must have demonstrated a love of swimming and servant leadership on his/her team, school campus and/or in the community. This scholarship was funded completely by those donating in Carolyn’s memory. Enough funds have been donated to sustain the scholarship for 12 awards. It is intended to be $500 per year for that duration. Further donations are being accepted. Those wishing to contribute should contact Chris Accetta directly at
[email protected]. Checks will be accepted during the championship meet and should be made out to “CCAA” with a note in the memo line stating “Carolyn Keller Scholarship Fund”. Donations are not tax deductible, are deeply appreciated, and will be recognized in the next season’s heat sheet ads. The Carolyn Y. Keller Scholarship is generally awarded to at least one CCAA swimmer each year. Application information is available on the CCAA website www.swimccaa.com. Brittany Lauren DeJeet Brittany DeJeet was born October 16, 1985 in Enid, OK. She was the first child of Kris and Karen DeJeet. Kris was an Air Force pilot and her family life began at Vance AFB in Enid OK. Her brother, Kris was born in 1987. Her family moved to Charleston where her father continued to fly with the Air Force. Brittany loved the water from a very young age and started swimming competitively for the Crowfield Killer Waves at age 9. At 10 years old, she began swimming year round for the Man-Of-War swim team. After moving to West Ashley she became a member of the Parkshore swim team and also swam for the City of Charleston swims team. Brittany graduated from Northwood Academy High School in 2003. Brittany was an accomplished swimmer. Her best events were the shorter sprints in freestyle and the butterfly. She was a CCAA Champion in the 9-10 and 11-12 girls 50m freestyle. She was her high school's first state champion in any sport. She was also a member of the South Carolina zone team at age 14. While Brittany competed in the pool and loved winning races, her real passion was for the friendships and relationships she made with the coaches, families and friends of the people in the swimming community. The best years of her life were spent with her swimming friends and families. Her family has nothing but wonderful memories of those years in the pool. Brittany’s life tragically ended on Feb 25, 2007. She was killed when she made the mistake of getting into the car of a driver who had been drinking, who then lost control of the automobile. Though her life ended right here in Charleston on Folly Road, her spirit still lives on in the hearts and minds of the families and friends who knew her. She will never be forgotten by those who loved her. Please let her loss and this annual remembrance award be a constant reminder to all our swimmers to spare their families our tragedy and pain. Please, please, please, don’t drink and drive and don’t travel as a passenger with someone else who has been drinking. We beg you. The Brittany DeJeet award goes to the winner of the 11-12 girls freestyle at each year’s CCAA Championship Meet. 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011

William Chene Moore, IV “A loving tribute dedicated to the nobility of the human spirit” May 24, 1997 was the end of Chene Moore’s extraordinary battle with cancer...but not the end of Chene’s extraordinary influence on all of us lucky enough to know this wonderful young man. Chene began swimming competitively at age 11 as therapy for an asthma problem. His doctor said he would not excel at the sport but believed it would be therapeutic. Within three months Chene was ranked Number 1 in South Carolina in his age group. By 12, Chene was third in the entire U.S. in the 100 IM and in the top five in both the 50 and 100-meter breaststroke. At the age of 16, he was No. 2 in the nation. He was an anchor on the Ashborough Swim Team during these wonderful, exciting years. In April 1989 at the age of 17, Chene was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. During his treatments of chemotherapy and radiation Chene fought cancer with the same determination he fought to swim, and continued swimming during his treatments. Chene’s freshman year at UNC-Chapel Hill ushered in more cancer - his liver this time. He endured grueling treatments at The University of Florida, volunteering for every experimental program available to him. Upon recovery, Chene began swimming again and coached the Ashborough Swim Team for the first time. In May 1993, Chene was diagnosed with recurrent Hodgkin’s and returned to Gainesville. This time, he was not expected to survive. His miraculous spirit fought back and he completed a bone marrow transplant and was released in 28 days. Chene again coached Ashborough, stressing mental attitude, staying focused and having fun. He told his swimmers “When you start to overcome an obstacle, that’s the time to push even harder, not slack off. You don’t ever quit because that’s a losing mentality.” Chene not only taught his swimmers to NEVER GIVE UP, he was a living testimony to the power behind the words. The annual Summerville Meet held at Ashborough is now known as “The Chene Moore Invitational” and the trophy is inscribed with the words “A loving tribute dedicated to the nobility of the human spirit”. Chene held the CCAA record for the 11-12 boys breaststroke for 23 years, from 1984 to 2007. This was a lasting statement of the depth of his talent. To draw upon Chene’s strength and his impact on our lives we only need to close our eyes. . .feel the gentle summer breeze on our face. . .smell the chlorine wafting off the pool. . .listen to the backstroke flags flapping and see Chene standing with his legs apart, both hands on the back of his hips and telling us, “Don’t tell me you’re tired of fighting. Don’t you dare quit! I’ll tell you when to quit.” Chene Moore. . .forever remembered. . .forever loved. 11-12 Boy’s Breastroke Winners 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003

Louise Stuhr The Louise Stuhr Award is presented each year to the winner of the 7-8 girls backstroke at the Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association’s Championship Meet. This award is given in recognition of Miss Stuhr’s many years of involvement in swimming; first as a competitive swimmer, then as an active Water Safety Instructor, and finally as a very willing referee in the CCAA during its formative years. Louise Stuhr began swimming competitively at age 11 and continued through her years at Memminger High School and the College of Charleston. She won many titles in swimming, including the Southeastern AAU and Mid Atlantic NAAF championships. As a teenaged basketball player, she also won the junior world free throw championship. Her enthusiasm for sports was rewarded in 1974 when she received the first Governor’s Physical Fitness Award from South Carolina Governor John C. West and his Council on Physical Fitness. Miss Stuhr was one of the first Water Safety Instructors in South Carolina. From 1938 until 1970, she attended the Red Cross National Aquatic School in Brevard, North Carolina, as an instructor, teaching other people how to teach swimming and water safety at all levels. She organized Westvaco’s Palmetto Aquatic Club, a six week program that attracted about 250 young swimmers each summer for the 14 years that she was associated with the program. She also taught swimming at the Citadel, local city pools, and the Charleston Naval Shipyard. For many years, Louise Stuhr volunteered her services as a referee for youth swimming meets in the Charleston area, including competitions in the early days of the CCAA (then known as the Coastal Carolina Novice Swim League) in the 1960s. Although she never married or had children, she wanted local young people to have a good time and know that someone cared about them. Her biggest compliment as a swimming official is that she was not perceived to be too easy or too tough; she just seemed very fair. Louise Stuhr died in September 1981.

WĞƚĞŽŵďĞƐ Pete Combes graduated from Florida State University in 1963 after earning three varsity letters on the Seminoles’ swim team. He served as the head coach of the University of South Carolina men’s team from 1968 through 1970. In Columbia, he was also a year-round swim coach, primarily for the Richland County Swim Association. Pete and his wife Ann came to Charleston in the mid 1970's for Pete to coach The Citadel’s swimming team and the Charleston Swim Association, the ancestor of the current SMRT team. Pete coached at The Citadel until its swim team was discontinued after the 1980 season. While coaching at The Citadel, Pete formed the Lowcountry Sea Devils swim team. Pete designed the pool at the St. Andrews Family Fitness Plus center, where he coached the year-round swim team until 1985. He continued to participate in Masters Swimming for years and swam on a relay in the early 1990s that still holds a state record. Late in his life, Pete coached in the CCAA as the head or assistant coach of the Jewish Community Center and the James Island Swim Team. Pete began working with personal computers soon after they appeared in the 1970s. He and Ann began timing and scoring meets in Charleston and across South Carolina in the early 1980s. Pete and Ann worked as the timers and data processors for the CCAA Championship Meet from 1990 until 2014. Pete was too ill to work at the 2015 City Meet, but he watched from home as Ann and her nephew Paul worked the meet. Pete passed away on Christmas Eve of 2015. Pete coached many CCAA parents and grandparents as well as several current and past CCAA coaches. Those coaches have gone on to coach and mentor other CCAA coaches, making Pete’s coaching tree very significant throughout the CCAA. Pete loved the CCAA Championship Meet, especially because it was like a reunion for him and his former swimmers and their families. ϵͲϭϬŽLJ͛ƐƵƚƚĞƌĨůLJ ϮϬϭϱ Carson Owens SM 32.81
