Let me delve on each of the four verticals separately:

Besides expanding the excellence ‘mantra’ amongst new entrants, the year witnessed the eighth winner of the CII-EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence and two Prize winners. Based on feedback from various stakeholders, some new offerings were launched at different levels of implementation. Benchmarking Projects would enable member organizations to benchmark and learn on Performance, Process and Practices in select areas of critical importance in today’s business context. New Programmes like Strategy Deployment Workshops, Strategy Assessments, Excellence Competition, and Social Media Networks would foster higher levels of excellence. Professional Development Programmes would help Professional Managers build capability through application based rigorous certification programmes for assessors and implementers. Customized Management Framework based on the EFQM Excellence Model would attract more Channel Partners and Suppliers. Tie ups with internationally reputed management institutes and universities for offering modular e-learning programmes would be the focus of the Modular Leadership Development Programme. To refine and enrich the robustness of the CII EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence Programme, collaborating with member organization of GEM Council, like SPRING, Singapore and bringing in International assessors to take part in assessments would lend enhanced value proposition for India Inc. MSME members would be more vigorously inducted into the Award process.

Business Excellence: Despite adverse economic and market conditions, the Business Excellence Vertical achieved a record financial performance by adopting innovative approaches, leveraging technology and large process improvements. The changes in the EFQM Excellence Model and its requirements were introduced in a seamless manner through a series of upgrade programmes using multiple forums including webinars resulting in the skilling of the entire community of practicing organizations, assessors and other users. We are extensively covered and skilled on the adoption of the revised Excellence Model requirements.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) : Of the 2013 results announced by Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM), 17 of the 18 recipient companies of the TPM Excellence award were serviced by the technical team from TPM Club India of the Institute of Quality and one by JMAC, Japan. Counseling and training continued to be the main activity. For the first time, the Head Quarters of a large size company (IOCL-New Delhi) was assessed for effective TPM implementation. IOCLHQ upon passing the assessment, has applied for the TPM Award from JIPM, Japan. New sectors / activities included the initiation of TPM Cluster

It was a rewarding year at CII-IQ and we are pleased that we have increased our new products and services leading to a reasonable performance. Admittedly, manufacturing today remains the core of CII-IQ's activities, yet the Institute has already established itself as a champion of quality in education, healthcare, service sectors and the government. The journey, however, is far from over. In turn, the increasing importance of leveraging quality in areas like Retail, FMCG, Financial Services and Infrastructure to name a few sectors, has become more pronounced. The highlights of CII-IQ during 2013 included 300 companies benefitting by way of consulting; IQ Counselor's engagement was at an average of 15 days in a month; over 150 training programmes were conducted and internationally our foot prints reached SAARC, Africa, UAE and Europe.

work for TAFE’s select suppliers; TPM Training Programme at Automotive Industry Development Center, South Africa and a training programme at L&T, Chennai for the construction sector. Besides, “Circle Competition” being introduced to encourage TPM practice at the shop floor, a Certification course on Lean Manufacturing was also introduced. QMS and Laboratory Management: The QMS and Laboratory Management Group of CII-IQ has been providing capacity building services to Indian Industry in the areas of Standards, quality management, quality application tools, laboratory management systems and conformity assessment for more than 2 decades. The support services are provided through trainings (both in open and incompany formats) consulting and knowledge sharing events. In the past year, QMS division conducted over 40 open and in-company trainings on a variety of subjects encompassing quality management, internal audits, quality tools and their applications, skills enhancement, laboratory management and internal audits, measurement uncertainty, risk management. More than 700 industry professionals benefitted from these trainings with the Vertical recording a growth of 29%. A one year PG Diploma Course on Quality Management for quality engineers of Bharat Forge Ltd. was successfully completed. New programmes on Enterprise Risk Management and Legal Metrology were launched. Counseling support was provided to a diverse mix of organizations such as DGFT, Air India SATS, Vizag Steel Plant, Reliance Power, Disaster Management Institute, ACMA. The Second National Laboratory Conclave was attended by over 400 laboratory professionals from across the country. A Workshop on Standards on Buildings and Construction was organized in February 2014 in collaboration with American National Standards Institute and Bureau of Indian Standards. On the policy advocacy front, CII-IQ developed the policy response to Bureau of Indian Standards Act amendment bill and made an oral submission to Parliamentary Committee on behalf of CII. The Vertical also actively contributed to several technical committees of ISO and BIS on standards related to quality management.

Team initiated Project Sarvottam with the Administration of Daman & Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli to manage schools for enhancing its performance effectiveness. Already, 6 School Excellence Clusters of 10 schools each have begun their excellence journey. The Team has also been empanelled with the Central Board of Secondary Education for Effective School Management & Leadership Programme for its schools across the country. The first of its kind Teacher Online Engagement Network (TEN) www.ciiten.in was launched, dedicated to improve the K-12 learning process by documenting, disseminating and advocating innovative, replicable and evidencebased strategies that will help teachers to prepare students to thrive in their future endeavours in education, careers and adult life. TEN will serve as an online platform that will not only provide the vision for the world of learning but also the realworld information and community connections to make it a reality. This year also saw enhanced participation of schools in training programmes and handholding services. The Annual National Summit on Quality in Education had over 550 participants with over 44 speakers from India and abroad who shared experiences on the theme “Smart Measurements for a Sustainable Educational Institution”. Going forward, it will our endeavor to look at new paradigms and imperatives to guide our future activities. As a premiere Institute of Training & Consulting, we will continue our efforts to enhance the quality and competitiveness of our membership across various industry sectors. In the unfolding socio-economic changes besetting us nationally, the CII Institute of Quality will surely play its part in enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of our members.

In its quest to become an International Centre of Excellence for Training and Development on all aspects of Competitiveness through Quality, it continued to offer a host of products and services including training, counseling and assessments together with domestic and international study missions on best practices. Delivering the Inaugural Address of the the CII organized 21st National Quality Summit in Bangalore, Mr Ajay Shankar, IAS, Member Secretary, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council observed that while business cycles remained unpredictable, Indian businesses needed to adapt to be competitive in a globalised world. Identifying the paradox of islands of excellence that existed in some sectors like Auto and its components, he felt that there was no reason for manufacturing to fail. For this, the Small and Medium Enterprises, though constrained historically because of some earlier strategic policy errors, had no option but to transform themselves to survive. Success in the domestic market was a precursor to global ambitions. The Skills Mission, he felt, would bring about a synergy in the SME sector and act as a catalyst to transform the sector. Ambition, self confidence, less reliance on government and lots of ambition could transform Indian manufacturing and make it comparable to its IT success story. The Summit with the theme “Quality as the game changer in uncertain times" focused on how quality was becoming increasingly relevant across the organization from the boardroom to the shop floor and for players in both the Manufacturing and Services sectors. In his Address, Mr T C A Ranganathan, Chairman and Managing Director, Export-Import Bank of India underlined that while India was underperforming in manufacturing and was way below its potential, it had sufficient scope for improvement. Sustainable advantage means that we need to encourage and build up our manufacturing capabilities and create a “Made in India” brand image. For this, he suggested, that the quality of output as recognized by the customer was a key differentiator for an Indian company to be a player in the global stage. Identifying the revolution in the logistics and communications sectors, he opined that excess capacity across the world would drive international competiveness and growth. These factors would pose challenges for Indian manufacturers to remain competitive. Mr Easwaran Subramanian, Senior Director, Strategy & Operations, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt. Ltd while delivering the Theme Address emphasized that the next frontier in Quality for organizations was to ensure that were able to provide customers with excitement attributes which, if provided, would lead to customer delight.

Earlier in his Welcome Address, Mr N Kumar, Chairman, CII Institute of Quality & Past President, CII & Vice Chairman, The Sanmar Group while recalling CII’s contribution in its three decades of service to the Quality movement, expressed confidence that the Summit would not only be able to juxtapose Quality amongst the various challenges to find elegant game changing solutions but would enable participants to gain a broad understanding of the latest global trends and the impact of poor quality effecting brand erosion. Mr L Krishnan, Past Chairman, CII Karnataka & Managing Director, Taegutec India Private Limited in his Vote of Thanks indicated that the increase in volatility of business made it imperative for organizations and leaderships to unlearn and imbibe new knowledge and skill. In this context, he recalled CII Institute of Quality’s fruitful journey in the Quality movement since 1986 and its lead role in bringing world-class operating philosophies and practices such as TQM, TPM, Lean and Six Sigma to enable Indian Industry to enlarge its focus from Product Quality to Organisation-wide Quality to aim for Business Excellence. CII-IQ he concluded would continue to play a pioneering role in identifying future trends and challenges to enable industry to gear up. The main Summit, held on the 8th of November, also hosted a series of Master classes which were equally well attended by participants. 5 Master classes were held on the previous and subsequent day of the Summit with Mr Devender Malhotra, Chief Quality Officer and Dr Hariprasad Reddy, Head of Knowledge Management, Wipro conducting the Master class on Knowledge Management ; Dr Gopichand Katragadda, Chairman and Managing Director, GE India Technology Centre conducting the Master class on Innovation; Mr Prabhakara A N, Head, Business Excellence, BOSCH leading the Master class on Business Excellence; Ms Vishali Dongrie, Senior Director, Human Capital, Deloitte conducting a Master class on HR and Mr Manfred H. Muell, Former CEO, Mercedes Benz & CEO, Scientrix Holdings conducting a Master class on ‘Getting it done. Through Collaboration’. Uncertainty- Omnipresent and across industries is not only widespread but is steadily increasing. In India it is being driven by six structural factors- macroeconomic forces, commodity-price volatility, policy instability, changing consumer dynamics, emergence of new competitors and game changing technologies. Ensuring operational flexibility through alternative sourcing options, dynamic supply chain management, lean operations and efficient working capital management would be critical in such volatile environments. Priming the organization to exploit uncertainty and prepare for multiple future s cenarios s hall be one of 5

the challenges that new age CEOs will have to face. This year’s Quality Summit incorporated innovative concepts, case studies and best practices delivered by leading industry experts. Session deliberations included

Managing Uncertainty for Sustainable Excellence, Quality, Sustainability and Innovation - Latest Practices in Quality and New Global Trends in Manufacturing among other topics.

5 Master classes were held on the previous and subsequent day of the Summit with Mr Devender Malhotra, Chief Quality Officer and Dr Hariprasad Reddy, Head of Knowledge Management, Wipro conducting the Master class on Knowledge Management ; Dr Gopichand Katragadda, Chairman and Managing Director, GE India Technology Centre conducting the Master class on Innovation; Mr Prabhakara A N, Head, Business Excellence & CSR Bosch Limited, India BOSCH leading the Master class on Business Excellence; Ms Vishali Dongrie, Senior Director, Human Capital, Deloitte conducting a Master class on HR and Mr Manfred H. Muell, Former CEO, Mercedes Benz & CEO, Scientrix Holdings conducting a Master class on ‘Getting it done. Through Collaboration’. The focus of Mr Muell’s Master class was on how organizations could master collaboration as a key enabler for today’s business success. Mr Muell discussed the building blocks required to transition to a collaborative organization: authentic leadership, holistic change, integrative design, collaborative technology, team coaching and performance management. He presented some case studies from blue-chip companies such as Mercedes-Benz and Bayer and drew specific focus on the innovative Scientrix Strategy Matrix approach as a key enabler for focused collaboration. The Master class conducted by Mr Devender Malhotra and Dr Hariprasad Reddy on “Role of KM for Organization’s Performance improvement in uncertain times” focused on the role of KM for organization performance improvement right from strategy formulation to knowledge mapping approaches. Various techniques and tools were discussed during this session which gave insights for participants on how knowledge management helped individuals to handle various planned and unplanned situations. This session further emphasized on how KM could complement Innovation initiatives of the organization and accelerates the development of Innovative products or solutions. The third Master class on “Innovation: smashing the hand-mind-market barrier” conducted by Mr Gopichand Katragadda delved on the history of global innovation and the patterns of success. This interactive session also facilitated a discussion on individual and organizational approaches to developing a strategy and a culture tuned to innovation. The Master class on “Identifying and developing HIPO and future stars” was conducted by Ms Vishali Dongrie. The objective of this Master class was to explore a variety of robust approaches in identifying and grooming future leaders realizing that building a leadership pipeline was an important step in an organization’s life cycle. The presentation provided an overview of the identification of high potential future leaders within an organization through a case study. The presentation also highlighted the need for deploying such identification, the approach taken for assessing future leaders and the development journey built from the outcome, once the high potential leaders had been identified. The fifth Master class was on “Journey of Business Excellence at Bosch”. It was very relevant for all those seeking to gain deeper insights on Business Excellence in action. It covered Fostering a culture of ‘Living Business Excellence’ in the organization, Lessons learnt in the journey of implementing business excellence from strategy to daily work and Innovative approaches used in implementing key initiatives relating the Business Excellence (TQM) to get corresponding business results.

The results of the CII – EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence 2013 were also announced during the Summit during the Award Nite. Mr Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister for Food & Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Government of Karnataka as the Chief Guest at the Award Ceremony distributed the Awards to over 40 companies who were recognized in the Award ceremony.

other Prize winner in the Large Organisation category. Indelox Services was the Prize winner in the Small and Medium Business category. Besides them, 22 organizations were conferred Commendation Certificates for Strong Commitment to Excel and 14 organizations, including SMBs, were conferred with Commendation Certificates for Significant Achievement in their Excellence journey. Distributing the Awards to 40 companies who had emerged winners in excellence, Mr Dinesh Gundu Rao, congratulated all the winners who had worked hard to achieve the recognition. Describing Excellence as the furthest end of the quality spectrum, he emphasized how the Award jointly constituted by CII and EXIM Bank had been successful in identifying and recognizing outstanding organizations proving themselves to be role models for other aspirants. The vigorous assessment process and the detailed feedback helped many organizations to leap jump their excellence journeys. The rigor of the Award process was a testimony to the fact that only 7 organisations had won the Award in the last 20 years; names that represents quality in the consciousness

of the customers. The movement had attained crucial mass with participation from almost all sectors of India Inc. - Manufacturing, Infrastructure, IT &ITeS, Healthcare, Financial Services, Retail, and Power having adopted this Excellence Model and also participating in the related Award program, he added. The Excellence Model is a practical, non-prescriptive framework that enables organizations to understand their key strengths and potential gaps in relation to their stated Vision and Mission. In his Opening Remarks, Mr N Kumar, Chairman, CII Institute of Quality & Past President, CII & Vice Chairman, The Sanmar Group and also Chairman of the Jury of the CII-EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence , recalled CII’s contribution in its three decades of service to the Quality movement by providing training, counseling and assessment services. On the occasion of 20 years of the Business Excellence movement in India, he announced that the Institute would enhance its partnerships with the various stakeholders and the assessor community.

Mr Soumitra Bhattacharya, Chairman, CII Karnataka State Council & Joint Managing Director, Bosch Ltd in his Special Address and Mr T C A Ranganathan, Chairman and Managing Director, Export-Import Bank of India who also spoke in the Award ceremony emphasized the need for organizations to embrace the Business Excellence model and launch themselves on the excellence journey. The CII Business Excellence Award Ceremony was held on the eve of the 21st CII National Quality Summit-CII’s flagship event on Quality. The CII Award for Business Excellence is the highest level of national recognition that an organization can receive for performance excellence. It recognizes companies for their achievements in quality and business performance, and to raise awareness of these factors in gaining a competitive edge. Today, almost every Corporate Group has adopted the Business

Excellence Framework. This approach has helped validate management practices adopted by organizations, large or small, to become more competitive and sustainable. CII has been the proud administrator of the BE Award based on the EFQM Excellence Model since 1994 providing process management and administrative support. The Tata Consultancy Services helped CII-IQ eenable the Award assessment process in 2012 and further improved it with many additional features in 2013.The portal has enhanced accessibility, cut down retrieval time, saved precious assessment hours thereby making the assessment process greener and leaner. It has also contributed in establishing seamless communication between the Award administration, Assessor community and the Applicant as well.

Business Excellence The focus of the Business Excellence vertical during the year had been: ? To transform

Besides the National Quality Summit and the ensuing Award ceremony of the CII-EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence, other initiatives include the Winner’s Conference by Bosch Ltd., Nashik, the Award Winner of the prestigious CII-EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence-2013. The Leadership Team of Bosch Ltd., were very spontaneous in disseminating the success stories of their Journey for Excellence and their meticulous planning and strategic approach. The National Business Excellence Conclave and the 1st National Excellence Practice Competition helped showcase the successful practices of great Indian Organizations so that its learning’s could benefit India Inc. 12th CII-IQ Anniversary Celebrations Talented workers formed the top indicator of a country’s competitiveness – followed by a country’s trade, financial and tax system, cost of labor and materials. Enhancing and growing an effective talent base remained core to competitiveness among the traditional manufacturing leaders and increasingly among emerging

market challengers as well. Manufacturing still mattered a great deal for the economic prosperity stated Mr N Kumar, Chairman, CII-IQ at the 12th Anniversary Celebrations of the CII Institute of Quality in Bangalore on 9th May 2013. Co-creation and co-production had become buzzwords in today’s marketing environment. Although the two referred to some recent trends in the relationship between firms and consumers, they are nevertheless different. Cocreation referred to joint value creation, where customers and firms could come together to mutually exchange and create value. He emphasized that value was uniquely determined by consumers and that the firm could only have one of two roles: to either facilitate value, or to cocreate (become involved in the customer’s value creation process). Co-production, with the involvement of customers, was in product and service development. The idea was not new and had been previously used in the idea of customer orientation, customer led innovation and using lead users to innovate. Industry, he underlined, needed to be conscious of the same. CII-IQ, he said, epitomized Quality and Excellence and always strove to address people and organizations needs of continuous improvement through Business Excellence, TPM, Lean, Six Sigma, Safety, Quality Management System, Metrology, Laboratory, Risk Management, and

National Excellence Practice Competition The First edition of National Excellence Practice Competition was conducted by the CII Institute of Quality on 9 & 10 May in Bangalore as a concurrent event of the 12th CII-IQ Anniversary Day celebration. This platform was created to showcase the successful practices of great Indian Organizations so that its learning’s could benefit India Inc. National Stock Exchange of India emerged as the Winner with Wipro as the First Runner Up and Godrej & Boyce, Appliances Division as the Second Runner Up.

Inaugurating the First National Business Excellence Competition sponsored by National Stock Exchange, Mr Kumar said that the experience and the knowledge of this unique and diverse group of organizations formed the platform upon which CII’s activities and services to its members were built. CII-IQ's products and services had been tailored to support the systematic implementation of the EFQM Excellence Model in any organization, regardless of size, sector or maturity. The CII-EXIM Bank Award had helped Industry to compare one organisation with other world-class leaders based on rigorous and holistic assessment by a panel of external experts and professionals providing comprehensive feedback on all aspects of Business and strategy. The National Business Excellence Competition was designed at 2 levels with the 9 top scoring organisations participating in the final competition with their best practice presentations. Organisations across various sectors like Manufacturing, Auto, Infrastructure, Power, IT/ITes, Healthcare participated in the level 1 stage by submitting their entry online in the competition website. A Special feature of the competition at this level was the online evaluation by many practicing managers.

Mr L Krishnan, Managing Director, TaeguTec India Pvt. Ltd & Past Chairman, CII-Karnataka in his opening remarks, welcoming the delegates and the speakers, elaborated on the activities of the CII Institute of Quality, especially its Business Excellence propagation in Indian industry. The patronage of last year’s First Business Excellence Conclave by the members had set the stage for the second edition of the conclave this year, he added. Mr S Viswanathan, Managing Director, John Fowler (India) Private Limited & Past Chairman, CII Karnataka delivered the Keynote address “ The Leadership Imperative’’ and spoke on the prime importance of leadership for any activity or movement in Business excellence. He underscored the need for a committed leadership, which was capable to scale the stacked odds against the Organization, asking the right questions, listening to contrary views and taking all on board during the big change. During his talk, he gave many examples of ethics, morality and traits of leadership. He showcased a presentation “Securing the State”, which, post the 9/11 US attacks and the parliament attack of 26/11 proved to be a trigger for the country to beef up its intelligence gathering mechanism. Mr Sahay held the audience spell bound with his narration of the finer aspects of an ERP enabled backbone which has knit the entire state with information and communication improving the effectiveness of the working of the Police Dept. Commenting on the high maturity practices by Organizations, he listed out the areas of Leadership and people management, holistic process management, customer centricity, enabling environment for innovation and use of technology and tools. He supplemented the understanding by elaborating on some of the finer points. Mr Karthik N Modi, Vice President, Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co. Limited presented a case study on the application of “Theory of Constraints” in their Locks business. The unique two years initiative to create a lean supply chain was based on a Pull Model with thousands of pan India retailers and distributors. The case study presented the perspective of forgoing short term annual gains for a secure future with exponential growth and profitability. It also emphasized the need to sensitize, train the entire supply chain in seeing the initiative through.

Mr Satyender Kumar, Former Senior VP Infosys Technologies and Technical Adviser, CII –IQ made the opening remarks in the session “Collaboration with Customer for a Win – Win” highlighting the importance of connecting to the customer. Mr G Madhavan, GM, EID Parry and his colleague Mr Nachiket Udupa, Dy Manager, EID Parry presented the case of “Cashless Farming” which is a unique practice in the Indian Agriculture industry. EID Parry has evolved a cooperative movement with farmers whom they see as suppliers as well as customers which involves interacting and engaging with them, beginning from seeding to harvest providing manure, inputs, harvesters etc. Notable is the fact that the farmer need not step out of his field for anything. Farmers get their money post 14 days of their

harvest which is an unknown in the sugar industry. This encourages the farmers to be engaged with the company for a lifetime giving importance to the relationship. They also highlighted the positive spin-off of this kind of partnership where farmers got together to help start the factory within 4 days after a cyclone struck the area completely damaging the factory. Mr Parasuraman, Sr. VP, Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts shared the “Customer Excellence through Toyota Way” experience of catering to the customers through their processes and systems. Key learnings and take-aways were the “A3 problem solving methodology” and the approach of a visual factory with a Genchi Gembutsu approach for attacking abnormalities along with the 3M methodology. Another 5 tenets that were shared were the elements of Teamwork, Footwork, Headwork, Hard work and Networking.

Prof B Mahadevan, Professor of Operations Management, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore shared the perspective of ‘Manufacturing Excellence in the Indian Industry’. He set the context of liberalization, the opportunity seized by multiple players and the competitive environment. He elaborated on the need for innovation and forward thinking by organizations. He brought out the need for Organizations to look into the distant future and not rest on the laurels of having achieved optimal levels. He also shared that while Organizations were mature enough in using tools, techniques, it was the complacency that has undone and will undo the gains that have been accrued in the recent past. His mantra for agility in Opex included going deeper into the value chain which is untapped, seek benchmarking and get out of the current mindset. Mr Greg Moran, Co-Founder & CEO, Zoomcar India Private Limited spoke about the importance of Service Excellence where he shared insights on the successful and innovative business model in renting self driven cars by the hour or by the day based on lifestyle preferences. He stressed on the need to connect with the customer through all the phases of the transaction. Notable is the fact that Mr Greg is a US Citizen who decided to set up shop in India in a known area of business but with a

Mr PM Krishnan, Senior Counsellor, CII-IQ introduced the panelists of the session “Sustaining Excellence: Culture of continuous Improvement”. Mr P Panda, VP (Power Train Engg), Maruti Suzuki India Limited delved into the “Product development Process” of Maruti where he detailed the unveiling of a product through the various stages beginning from the clay model concept to the serial volume production stage. Learning was on the role of the engineers, designers, Quality, supply chain who form the backbone of the development process at various stages with their inputs and expertise to make use. They use, in the process, the voice of the customer as well as come out with a product that is expected by the Sales & Mktg and also matching the leadership’s thoughts spelt through the strategy. Mr Subhash Khare, VP, Wipro Technologies spoke about “Continuous improvement” from the people and process perspectives. Notable was the fact that while process improvements are the focus, he outlined how a flawed “so called improvement project” could upset the balance between the processes in an organisation. He also listed the methodology of picking and choosing the right projects with a neutral facilitator for the effective outcome of projects. He further stressed the need for CIP projects to be oriented towards convergent improvements than divergent improvements.

The panel represented different industry segments and also the OEM & Supplier ends of Supply chain spectrum. Discussions centered on the elements of cost competitiveness, load on the supplier in terms of unknown market demand, need for upgrading systems by suppliers with the threats of a low cost model of the OEM etc Vs supplier expectations and aspirations. Ultimately, the panel agreed on the need for collaboration between the customer and the supplier based on trust and transparency which ensures cost advantage to the customer and profits and assured benefits to the supplier.

The members of the delegation visited Tianjin for a meeting with CCPIT (China Council for the Promotion of International Trade) and interaction with select members. Mr Dong Li Bin, Vice Chairman and his team introduced the members to the Indian Delegation. The members had in depth discussions on various investment opportunities and were open to any joint venture business propositions. The delegation also visited the Great Wall Motors, the manufacturers of cars in Tianjin. Ms Bei Xiangyu along with her team took the members around the production facility. From there, the members went to Tianjin Automotive Industrial (Group) Co. Ltd., one of the largest producers of Passenger Cars, SUVs and also suppliers of customized Patrolling Vehicles for the Tianjin Police. Ms Bai Shu Zhong, Chief Economist and team, facilitated the visit and organized the test drive on the rugged tracks in-built in the factory. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) The focus of the Total Productive Maintenance vertical during the year continued to be: ? Promoting

TPM practices through consulting, training and diagnostic assessments ? Conducting seminars, workshops, trainings, conferences and competitions. India highest TPM Award Winners outside Japan With TPM being considered as a necessary tool for building competitiveness in Indian Industry, its serious and rigorous implementation has resulted in 167 Indian companies receiving 238 awards from Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance. The year started with the announcement of results of the TPM Awards by Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) after a detailed

assessment of applicant companies for the year 2012. This year too turned out to be very good for the Indian Industry with 19 companies successfully challenging the prestigious Japanese award. With this result, Indian Industry continues to make India the highest number of awards outside Japan for which Indian Industry deserves accolades. Presently there are 220 Awards in India achieved by 156 companies with some of them going for higher level of awards in their TPM journey. 2 mile stones were crossed this year; 150 companies getting the TPM Awards and 50 awards conferred on the companies supported by the Counsellors from CII-TPM Club India. Results achieved by these companies include 15-25% increase in production; 80-90% reduction in breakdowns;

75-85% reduction in defects and reworks; maintenance cost reduction by 10-20% together with manufacturing cost reduction by about 5-7% over a 4 year period. Through the combination of consulting and training, TPM Club India has been instrumental in training over 2,00,000 plant personnel either directly or through the trained planned personnel over the last 14 years. During

the year, companies in South Africa, Nigeria, Oman, and Bahrain have been provided with consulting support. TPM Facilitators course attracted participants from Savola, in Iran and Saudi Arabia.

20th Kaizen Conference & Competition The 20th Kaizen Conference cum Competition conducted by TPM Club India of the CII Institute of Quality held in Gurgaon during 27-28 February successfully concluded with the announcement of the 8 winners; 3 in the operator level, 3 in the supervisor / manager level and 2 in the senior manager level categories. Besides various process improvements presented, it was estimated that over Rs 27.43 crores of savings had directly accrued from the successful implementation of various Kaizens ! All major companies from different sectors across the country like Oil & Gas, Steel Industries, Auto OEMs & Auto component manufacturing, Cement Industries, Wires & Cables, Infrastructure, Pharmaceuticals, Food & Beverages, Textiles, Metal, Paints, Plastic, Engineering, Precision Tools from PSUs, OEMs, Tier 1 & Tier 2

suppliers presented their best Kaizens. Over 275 participants from 95 organisations attended the 20th Kaizen Conference in Gurgaon. This decade long Kaizen Conference cum Competition, with 100 award winners till date, has over the years emerged as a preferred platform for corporates to not only present their improvement initiatives but also compete amongst themselves, through delegate voting, to be declared winners. In his valedictory address, Mr Yogesh Munjal, Chairman, CII - TPM Club India recounted the steady growth and implementation of TPM in the country. In 1991, Vikram Cement started TPM implementation in the country and won the TPM Excellence Award in 1995. Sundram Fasteners started in 1995 to win the award in 1998. In the same year, CII and JIPM (Japan Institute of 21

Plant Management) signed an agreement for the promotion of TPM in India and the TPM Club India was born. Since 1995, 156 Indian companies have received 220 JIPM TPM awards; the largest award winning country outside Japan! Hindustan Unilever with 41 awards, Tata’s with 13, IOCL with 11 and Mahindra’s with 9 Awards top the list of award winners in India. Allaying a common perception that TPM was only relevant to the Engineering Industry and that too specifically for auto industry, Mr Munjal clarified that the results so far indicates that 89 engineering companies; 65 process companies and 2 companies in the service sector have received the awards. He also complimented the 19 Indian 2012 JIPM TPM award winning companies who would be receiving the awards in Kyoto, Japan on 27th March 2013. Applauding the 81 kaizens presented during the 20th Kaizen Conference cum Competition, he noted that it “indicates that there has been lots of learning’s and takeaways for the participants” as companies practicing TPM have been rigorously pursuing the concept of cost reduction utilizing its proven methodology. Such Kaizen Conference cum competitions of TPM Club India has always been designed considering the industrial scenario

and the urgent need of Indian Industry. This year too, the focus has been given on cost reduction, activity reduction and productivity improvement grouped under 18 topics of importance considering 3 levels of engagement in a company like the operator level, Supervisor / Manager Level and Senior Management level. The winners of each Kaizen Conference subsequently go on to contest the ‘Kaizen Championship Award-2013’, a high level Kaizen competition with a unique process of selecting the best out of the best to be held during the TPM National Conference in Chennai.

30 Kaizens on 5 subjects contested in the Operator’s category for 3 trophies which were mainly relating to shop floor improvements. There were 41 Kaizen presentations on 10 subjects in the Supervisor’s/ Manager’s categories for 3 trophies. These improvements related to elimination/ reduction of various loses to increase the Production efficiency of the manufacturing processes or to reduce the Cost by reducing consumption of Energy, Consumables & Raw Materials. These improvements represented good examples of the maturity of Indian industries striving to excel through Creativity, Innovation and Technical knowledge. There were 10 companies in the Senior Manager’s category vying for 2 trophies who presented their improvements on subjects covering new technologies, process innovation, capital cost reduction and lead time reduction to meet customer demand.

In his Special Address, Mr A S Lakshmanan, Chairman, National Safety Council (Karnataka Chapter) & Past Chairman, CII Karnataka underlined that “safety culture” could be regarded as part of the overall organization culture and was a mixture of shared values (such as the importance of a safe work environment), beliefs (commitment to safety), processes/procedures, management style, approaches to problem-solving, and 'unwritten' rules and practices. While enunciating the tenets of a strong organizational Safety culture, he underlined that ultimately, the safety accountability required the acceptance of responsibility by the employees. In his Inaugural Address, Mr Alex Botha, Chief Executive, British Safety Council, UK detailed the key elements of engaging with safety which included the association of the supply chain with high levels of communication and monitoring worker views with a focus on behavioral-based safety. The key success factors in such efforts included Vision, Action, Monitoring, Structure, Communication, Learning with a Focus on engagement. Mr Tsutomu Nakamura, Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM), spoke about the importance of TPM, TPM Awards and its growth across the Globe, gave inputs on the different levels of awards in the TPM journey and the status of TPM practices across the world. People form the most important and valuable asset in any company. Without them a company cannot move forward. The importance of engaging the operators positively for the development as well as “how” with TPM methodology was discussed in the session on Changes in People’s dimension through TPM from the

His presentation gave the participants an encouragement to take up TPM as a journey and to benefit from it. Daily Work Management is the key essence for the successful running of a company. Effective utilization of every day is the key for the success of business. Every person in the company should be able to manage their day in a planned manner. Hindustan Coca Cola presented the importance of Daily work management, the ROUTINES and how it was integrated into the TPM activity.

The session on Board room to shop floor transformation showed how TPM as a business tool transforms the balance sheet of a company through the transformation in the shop floor initially and then how all the other departments in the company contribute to the growth and the profitability of the company. The transformation happens not only in the physical sense but the most important change that happens in the journey of TPM is the transformation in the minds of the people to look for ideas / areas which can be addressed for making the company a profitable constitution. The session on Organisational Economic Value Improvement through TPM saw how Aquasub Industries Ltd used the concept of Asset utilization or sweating of assets as the key for increased profitability. The Institute also provided comments and inputs on the policy committees of QCI, NABL and BIS as well as on technical committees of BIS and ISO in the areas of Quality Management, Outsourcing, and Statistical Quality tools.

Capacity Building The QMS and Laboratory Management Group of CII-IQ has been providing capacity building services to Indian Industry for more than 2 decades, keeping abreast with the developments taking place at international and national level, and in the process significantly aiding the competitive position of Indian products and services from a quality perspective. The Division also acts in influencing policy in areas of standardization, conformity assessment and technical regulations by maintaining a strong interface with relevant ministries and national bodies. 2nd National Conclave for Laboratories In collaboration with NABL, the QMS and Laboratory Management Group organized the Second National Conclave for Laboratories on 16 & 17 September at Bangalore on the theme ‘Innovative Practices in Laboratory Management’. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam addressed the congregation comprising of over 400 laboratory scientists at the valedictory session of the Conclave. Quality improvement and innovation has become a world order for all types of organizations”, Dr Kalam said. “Brand Evolution of Indian Products can only come through Quality Assurance” for which accredited testing and calibration are essential components in the entire product development cycle starting from design through the life cycle support. He urged the organizers of the Conclave CII and NABL to provide support to the industry in terms of training and development as well as by ensuring the availability of reliable test houses and mobile lab services especially for the MSME segments. He said for economic development, it is essential that India step up its ranking on the Global Innovation Index and Competition Index presently hovering around 64 and 59 respectively. “For this we need creative leadership across all sectors who should give high importance to education and research”. Dr Kalam lauded the efforts of CII Institute of Quality and NABL, the apex accreditation body in India for laboratories in creating a forum to share, discuss and evolve policy on all critical and emerging issues relating to testing and calibration laboratory practices. The Conclave was inaugurated by Dr T Ramasami, Secretary, Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, who is also the Chairman of NABL. Dr Ramasami called for the need to set benchmarks as measurements of performance of laboratories. He said bodies like NABL and CII should set new standards on the processes adopted by laboratories as a basis of their accreditation,

He said innovation which is based on creativity and practices which are based on established standards, need to be pursued together in a synergetic manner for the laboratories to improve on their performance. He also stressed on the participants to discover practical solutions to problems during the Conclave rather than only discussing the issues. Mr Anil Relia, Director, National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) briefly outlined the formation and relevance of NABL as the agency responsible for accreditation of laboratories in India. Mr N Murugesan, Director General, Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), the Guest of Honour, while emphasizing on the interdependence of laboratories, spoke about the rising expectations of customers from laboratories. Citing a live example, he cautioned about some of the malpractices being undertaken within the existing accreditation framework.

Mr S Chandrasekhar, Past Chairman, CII and Managing Director, Bhoruka Power Corporation calling for a responsible and constructive Quality Management System, suggested that effective accreditation should not lead to increase in the cost of doing business. Even a 1% error could significantly contribute to national wastage besides its lost opportunity potential, he cautioned. The Conclave was addressed by over 50 eminent speakers. The course was custom developed for BFL with CII-IQ conducting sessions on quality management and statistical quality tools and BFL faculty took sessions on quality engineering programmes developed by the company. Besides class room trainings that included the use of Minitab software, participants were asked to select projects with quality problems from their own work area and solve them using the tools taught. Seven such projects were selected and the CII faculty guided the participants on the application of diagnostic and problem solving tools. Students were assessed through regular midsession tests, final examination as well as on project work. The valediction programme for the course was held on 30 October 2013 in the presence of Mr Amit Kalyani, Executive Director, Bharat Forge. Company management and the participants expressed deep appreciation of the course contents and the delivery methods and said that the learning’s from the course would be extremely helpful in the company’s continued quest for global leadership in its areas of operation. TEN will serve as an online platform that will provide not only the vision for the world of learning but the real-world information and community connections to make it a reality. I-LeaP- “Institutional Leadership Programme”: The School Leadership Empowerment Programme has been designed by CII-IQ to help participants become leaders with impact. Whilst providing inspiration and guidance for established leaders, the programme will also benefit those looking to be better equipped for a leadership role when the opportunity arises.

The Sarvottam Logo depicts the coming together of all education stakeholders to transform education in line with the best in class practices to assure quality in education. The logo has four components. A flame, all stakeholders in coordination, a book and Warli human figures. The ‘flame’ or ‘jyot’ symbolizes a path from darkness towards light. The eight different colours in the circle represent stakeholders contributing and collaborating in education; students, teachers, principals, parents, education department, administration of UT, the Central Government and ultimately the whole community. The book signifies the quest for education and the Warli figures represent the community and culture of the region.

School Excellence Cluster : Project Sarvottam The year started with the signing of the MoU with the UT Administration of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli for Project Sarvottam with the objective of enhancing the Quality of education. The project will facilitate schools to improve their academic performance and achieve balanced growth; to motivate stakeholders of schools viz. teachers, students, parents and others to strive for continuous improvement and to enhance ownership and commitment at all levels of the Department of Education. Higher Education Conclave was held at Erode with the help of CII Erode Zonal Office with the theme “Enhancing Curriculum Effectiveness for 21st Century” on 21 December 2013.

This two day Annual summit was inaugurated by Mr R V Deshpande, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Government of Karnataka who shared with the audience, the various initiatives taken by Government of Karnataka to ensure access and quality to the common man. He stressed that education should build national pride, character and integrity in students. He also launched TEN (Teacher Engagement Network) first of its kind free online platform for educators to share ideas, success stories, right models and strategies in education. ‘Quality is essential for private schools. Therefore thrust and focus should be more on quality rather than finance’ said Fr Jose Aikara Chairman of CICSE while addressing the gathering. He furthered shared how the Council has taken initiatives to strengthen academics which ensures student success.

While delivering his keynote address Dr Samuel Wineburg, Director, Prof of Education and Stanford University said “History should be used to mould citizenship and students should be trained to use their minds well rather than forming opinions on propaganda based on information sourced through search engines, assuming that the information is correct.” While he shared some of his experiences in USA, he said that age old educational measurements systems must change, recognizing the change in the way new age students think.

? How educational practices impact the overall efficacy

of the institution Some of these challenges were addressed at the National Summit on Quality in Education organized by CIIInstitute of Quality, Bangalore with the theme ‘‘Smart Measurements for a Sustainable Educational Institution’’ held on 27 - 28 September 2013 at Bangalore. The theme highlighted the Nation’s ensuing debate on how assessments, accreditation and institutional effectiveness was forcing educational leaders, policy makers and administrators to re-examine how they should educate learners and what needs to be done. Institutions had to demonstrate their effectiveness by vigorously assessing their performance based on their strategies & practices. NSQE attendees explored the need for measurements of the efficacy of practices in educational institutions; measurements of the effectiveness of learning spaces and assessing Institutional effectiveness for assured Quality learning and data Driven Decision making. There were

Mrs Nalini Desikan, Educational Consultant shared her research on how qualitative data is equally important as quantitative data to measure the success of any programme. Prof Nigam, Director Research from Alpha Group of Institutions, Chennai highlighted the status of research in India and abroad and what could be measurement matrix for research. Dr Senthil Principal Counsellor– CII-IQ shared through his experience how measurement can be done in the education institutions and how it would be useful to measure the effectiveness of various institutional practices and institutions as a whole. Measuring curriculum effectiveness: The foundation for this learning session had the speaker sharing how scholastic and co scholastic areas can be measured in the school education. Dr Susan Myers from the College of Education, Texas Tech College, USA shared how Policies, Laws, and Influences impact Schools and Learning. She also added that teacher preparation is key for use of a standardized rubric to measure competencies. The sessions under Higher education focused on how measurements can be done in social sciences, challenges of engineering education and integration of technology. Creating & effectively utilizing learning spaces: Mr Prakash Nair, President & Founder, Fielding Nair International USA shared his rich international experiences on the importance of assessing and creating learning spaces. This session delved into how educational institutions can plan and manage their resources & spaces to support the educational institution’s processes to ensure its effective utilization with well defined measurements. While planning and managing resources, they balance the current and future needs of the institution, community and environment too. The practical implementation of the same was shared by Mrs Selvi Santhosam, Head Projects, TVS Schools Madurai. Mr Solaikutty Dhanabal, Academic Program Manager, National Instruments shared how the effectiveness of science labs can be measured and Prof Sridhar shared how LEED certification has helped GLIM, Chennai in bringing in the culture of measurement. The sessions also focused on the good practices adopted by the corporate sector to ensure learning among the human capital and measure its effectiveness in line with its Vision Mission, Values, & strategies. Assessing Institutional effectiveness for assuring Quality learning: During this session Ms Isabel Sutcliffe, International Standards & Quality Director, Assessment and International Qualifications, Pearson Education (India) shared her international experiences on assessment and evaluation and Mr Satyajit Datta Roy, Head - Education Excellence, Tata Interactive Systems shared how the TEEP framework could assure Practice assessment for Institutional success. ‘Quality is like a cog wheel which plays an important role in enhancing the effectiveness of education practices in engineering education’ was stressed by Prof S S Mantha, Chairman AICTE who further added that all the stakeholders had a role to play. Prof S Ramakrishna, Head, IPC Department shared how Department of Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science was today a role model for others to emulate and inspire to adopt the international Rating frameworks. On the other hand, how a good internal assessment process and framework has helped Christ University to sustain quality was shared by Fr Thomas C Mathew, Vice Chancellor Christ University. Understanding the needs and expectation of the stakeholders is key and it has to be measurable was shared by Mr Shreedhar, Campus Head of Sri Gouthami Smart School where he has adopted technology in the form of an ERP to help the school to arrive at action plans for improvement. Mr Suhas Gopinath Founder CEO of Global Inc shared his experiences, challenges and possible solutions for educational institutions. The same was echoed by Mr Ananda Murali from RAMCO Systems that effective institutional leaders identify, use appropriate data in their strategic decisions making process in line with their Vision, Mission and values. With the volume of data available in any school, technology becomes key to help the schools to use the data anytime anywhere for effective decision making process. For the first time, an Open session with the title ‘Data Driven Decision Making in Education: The Way forward’ was initiated. This brought six delegates on the dais to share their initiatives and discuss the parameters used for measurement. The Summit unraveled myriad challenges and allowed over 600 participants across the nation to gain a ring side view of global trends and best practices, discussions, case studies and also showcased contemporary technologies and processes presented by global and domestic leaders. The summit served as a think tank for educators and innovators in various disciplines who expressed the need to continue with the same theme for next couple of years so as to provide thought leadership for institutions to practice and come back and share their success stories in the forum.

About the Building CII Institute of Quality, Bangalore

The CII Institute of Quality Bangalore has been sponsored by ABB Ltd and is spread over 4 acres of scenic land on the western outskirts of the garden city.The Institute is a modern piece of eye-catching architecture blending into the hilly terrain in which it is located. The building has been designed to be eco-friendly, with minimum impact on the environment and using green energy on saving technologies. The landscaping has been designed to enhance the beauty of the surroundings and provide a peaceful ambience suited to an institute of learning. Some of the unique features of the building as are follows . Passive Downdraft Environmental Cooling (PDEC) At the very outset, CII decided to introduce environmental cooling instead of costly and energy hungry air conditioning. Accordingly, PEDC was integrated into the architecture at the design stage. This system has been developed after study of ancient public buildings and palaces in India, which were instrumented to record all aspects of indoor air quality. The data recorded over a period of one year was then used to design a CAD programme, for adaptation and design of cooling systems for buildings. Basically, the system consists of 15-meter tall wind catchers, which are towers 44

that capture and deflect airflow into a large plenum chamber, which is located adjacent to the main building. From the plenum chamber, the air is fed into the various training halls.

The warm air rises and is bled away through vents. During hot weather, micronisers, located at the top of each tower dispense an atomized spray of water, which mixes with the incoming air, evaporates and produces cooling. Incoming temperatures can be thus be lowered by 100c, which is sufficient to bring indoor air temperature into the comfort zone. More importantly, the air being fed into the building is always new and not re circulated. Therefore it is always fresh and oxygen rich. No one feels sleepy and drowsy during sessions, even after a sumptuous lunch. Day lighting

The entire building has been designed to use natural light. There is no need to use power for lighting even on the dullest day. On bright days, excess light is filtered through specially designed blinds. Together with power saved from air conditioning, this represents huge energy savings during normal operation of the institute.

In order to save costs and energy, all materials in the building have been obtained from local sources. Further, no polished granite / marble has been used. Only ecofriendly materials like rough granite, local stone, recycled wood, cement and steel comprise the building.
