a future

constructing

Dear Friends, Anyone who has visited Buffalo or Western New York in the past months will have noticed the new energy that has gripped the area because of development, renovations, exciting and creative new ventures and a city aglow with possibility. The downtown area of Buffalo has been transformed and continues to change with each day. The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus is expanding steadily and now boasts of a beautiful new Gates Vascular Institute. The new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital is to be constructed within the next several years, adjacent to the other health care facilities in that area. In addition, many incubators have moved to the Medical Campus because of proximity to the health care institutions, and start-up research and medical equipment companies are sprouting up constantly in the surrounding neighborhood. Because of the attraction of scientists and health care personnel to the area, many of the downtown buildings have

skating rink, new restaurants, shops and facilities that will attract visitors and area residents during the colder months of the year. To look around this city, one would suspect that Western New York is constructing a new future and doing so with foresight and enthusiasm. Because D’Youville is located in the heart of all of this creativity and dynamism, the college is creating its future too, in concert with the emerging Buffalo explosion. As in the past, D’Youville is in the thick of it. The immediate plans for D’Youville’s future call for the addition of property, the development of buildings and athletic facilities, and the emergence of state-of-the art academic programs to prepare our students for this very exciting future.

Campus Expansion: Over the

past few months, D’Youville has been successful in negotiating the purchase of an historic building adjacent to the college campus which originally was the Protestant Home for Unprotected Children, and more recently has housed offices and programs for the Gateway-Longview services for children and youth. The Protestant Home for Unprotected Children received its first child in 1917 when it purchased the Letchworth Mansion property. The addition of this property presents

been converted into condominiums and rental properties, featuring boutique stores, restaurants and office space among the living quarters which have been added to the landscape. The beautiful improvements to the Buffalo waterfront have attracted thousands of people over the summer months. Boats, water ferries, restaurants, and outdoor stage and other entertainment all dot the waterfront and draw people to the beautiful surroundings. Summer 2012 found thousands of people migrating to the waterfront for special events and for random visits, enjoying the many attractions that are offered there. Recently, plans have been announced to add another attraction to that area which will have several hockey rinks, an outdoor

D’Youville with an opportunity to expand its academic facilities and to provide for emerging academic programs. In addition to this large acquisition, D’Youville has negotiated successfully with the City of Buffalo to purchase a 3.35 acre site located at Porter Avenue and Fourth Street, which will provide D’Youville with land to develop athletic fields for the college’s NCAA Division III athletic program.

Technology: To keep up with

the capacity it needs for the future.”

changing technology, D’Youville has

made the decision to completely transform its information services area and to find a provider who will be able to supply for administrative computers a state-ofthe art technology program, complete with the hardware and software required. Once the vendor has been selected, the transition and training for the change will take approximately 18 to 24 months. This change will not only affect D’Youville in a positive way now but will also give the college the capacity it needs for the future.

Website: As you know, if you have

tried to find D’Youville’s website recently, there has been a complete revision of this important feature. During this coming year, the website will offer much more information, a virtual tour of the campus, brief summaries of faculty interests and research and current updates. The website is designed to be efficient, easy to use and capable of having a large capacity for material. Send feedback on how you like its improvements and suggestions for what you want to have included.

Space Plan: Because the college has acquired additional property and continues to have issues about adequate classroom, office and research facilities,

a comprehensive space plan will be developed during the 2012-13 academic year and will present to us alternatives from which we can choose to make certain that the college enhances the neighborhood while providing for students, faculty and

programs in Western New York to be the learning laboratories for the college’s student teachers. This year, in addition to the agreements with the Buffalo Public Schools, Holy Angels Academy and other regional public and private educational institutions, D’Youville has a new partner, the West Buffalo Charter School. This school is a new charter school developed by the Buffalo Speech and Hearing Center in collaboration with D’Youville. Its program is so desirable to many families in the neighborhood,

staff the environment they will need to prepare them for the future.

Collaboration: To continue D’Youville’s engagement with the community, there is an effort to use the elementary and secondary school

relaying A message that the classes that they currently offer, kindergarten through second grade, are filled to capacity, in spite of the fact that the school is just beginning. It is located on Lafayette Avenue, close to D’Youville, and will provide an outstanding learning experience for our student teachers.

New Academic Programs:

This year the college celebrates the 70th year of the nursing program. September 2012 saw another exciting addition to the School of Nursing. The new doctorate of nursing practice program, recently approved by the New York State Education Department, welcomed its first students. This program connects D’Youville’s long history of excellent nursing education with the emerging demands and requirements of the profession of nursing. Another new program offered by D’Youville this year is the bachelor of science in mathematics. This program is designed to offer a broad exposure to the field of mathematics. There are three tracks from which to choose: the general track, statistics and the applied concentration track. Each of them is designed to prepare students for graduate work or for careers in the mathematical sciences. In addition to the nursing and mathematics programs, there is also a newly reconfigured education program offered for the first time this year. It is a combined bachelor’s and master’s offering named the bachelor of arts in liberal studies for education and the master of science in education program.

6

“College D’Youville wants to do all that it can to make certain that no one is left behind.”

The first part is designed to prepare students for childhood-level teaching. It also offers special education options. With the master’s degree, it will lead to New York state teacher certification within five years. Along with all the growth and opportunity that is evident in Buffalo, it is incumbent on this college to recall its mission to those who are not a part of the renewal. Therefore, again this year the fight against hunger will be a major priority for the D’Youville community, as it was last year. Everyone on campus became engaged in efforts to provide food and education about nutrition, money for food for those who are hungry, or service to local area food centers and soup kitchens or pantries that assist in fighting hunger. The efforts of the college campus during the past year

were so remarkable that it was decided to continue this initiative for the current year. As the Buffalo community grows and prospers, and as new opportunities arise, it is part of D’Youville’s mission to make certain that the needs of our neighbors who suffer from hunger and deprivation are not forgotten. As Buffalo changes, D’Youville College wants to do all that it can to make certain that no one is left behind. Named for Marguerite d’Youville, this college takes seriously the words of scripture which urge us to love our neighbor and the concern of Marguerite that “all must know that we never refuse to serve.” As new life bursts forth in this Western New York region, D’Youville is proud to play a role in constructing this new future of expansion and growth. D’Youville’s name has long been associated with participation in the community and responding to its changing needs. May our roots be firm and strong and may our efforts continue to prepare the way for the future that God has planned for us! Fondly,

Sister Denise A. Roche, gnsh, phd President

giving

seeing AN upward trend fundraising June 1, 2O11 through May 31, 2O12

While there is still much uncertainty in the financial markets, we are pleased to report some good news on D’Youville’s fundraising initiatives over the past year. The Loyalty Fund campaign reported an increase of 17 percent over the previous year, raising $516,980.77 from 2,843 donors. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Fundraising Index reveals that fundraisers for schools, colleges and universities estimate that giving to their institutions grew 4.4 percent in 2011. Another interesting piece of information is that the alumni participation rate for D’Youville is currently at 16.2 percent compared to the national average of 12.8 percent reported in 2010 by the Council for Aid to Education’s annual Voluntary Support of Education index. Overall, more than $2.9 million in gifts and grants was raised in 2011-2012. Unrestricted gifts overall saw a substantial increase and are especially important to the college because they allow it to direct the revenue to the area with the greatest need. In 2011-2012, the total unrestricted revenue that was contributed through annual giving, unrestricted bequests and the Health Care

1O

Awards Dinner totaled $543,187.64 which was 127.8 percent to the goal of $425,000. Indicative of the economic climate in which we find ourselves, the number of alumni who increased their gift this year over last year (including new donors) totaled 1,255 compared to 697 last year. Consistent annual gifts from these new and increasingly generous donors will be a key to D’Youville’s continued success.

the following pages. The support of our donors–the alumni, friends, trustees and community foundations–is confirmation of the enduring loyalty to the college and its high education standards. It is this powerful support that validates D’Youville’s education goals and service ethics, affirming the college’s Mission and sustaining the compassionate spirit of St. Marguerite d’Youville.

Online giving continues to increase and has become an important strategic initiative for increasing charitable donations to D’Youville. Here we have seen an increase of 18 percent over the previous year. The alumni online community grew from 813 to more than 1,000. This was due to an ongoing campaign to encourage alumni to enroll. Over 89 percent of visitors logged in regularly due to continuous efforts to update the content on the site. It is often said that the case for support of an organization is validated by the generosity of those closest to it. In 2011-2012, faculty and staff donors and the D’Youville College board of trustees combined to donate more than $115,000.00 in support of college initiatives.

Major gifts to the college come in the form of bequests, by which generous and thoughtful benefactors make a provision for D’Youville College in their estate plans. In 2011-2012, five bequests were received totaling $301,733.20. Five new endowed scholarships were created and a sizable commitment to the college’s veterans affairs office made by the Alfiero Family Charitable Foundation was received. Growth in this area continued its momentum from last year and performed strongly in 2011-2012. With more than $1.5 million in awards and payments, significant private grant awards ($356,199) were received from the Cummings Foundation, the Palisano Foundation, the Children’s Guild and Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. Calling

It might seem to some alums that we constantly urge them to “give back” to D’Youville for the excellent education they received, an education that was truly life changing. In the course of time we realize that there are as many ways of giving back as there are alumni. These four D’Youville alums have given back, in very great measure, for the gifts they have received.

to ..a desire “.help D’Youville

continue to be a symbol of St. Marguerite’s compassion.”

D’Youville’s president, Sister Denise A. Roche, gnsh, recently received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” as “Woman of Influence.” The role she filled began in 1979 when she was named president of D’Youville College. The youngest person ever to be named president of a college. Sister Denise described her reaction when she was asked to apply for this position,

“When Sister Mary Charlotte announced her resignation as president of D’Youville, some of the board members asked if I would consider applying for the position, mainly because they wanted a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart to continue as president. Although I was young and very inexperienced, I realized that this position provided an opportunity to become even more deeply rooted in the spirit of Marguerite d’Youville and the works of the Grey Nuns.” “With great enthusiasm and naiveté, I assumed the role of president with the desire to play a part in the life of D’Youville College so that it continued to be a symbol of Marguerite’s compassion, generosity and confidence in Divine Providence. Through the years I have been here, I have been given many opportunities to grow in each of those ideals and have been strengthened, encouraged and enlightened by the many wonderful men and women – and certainly the students – with whom I have had the privilege to walk these halls.” It would be impossible to mention Sister’s myriad accomplishments, but a few of her achievements are highlighted here. In the course of her tenure as president, the college enrollment increased from

Four alumNI stories

1,153 in 1980 to more than 3,000 today. In 1980, the college endowment and investments were $1.2 million, but have now reached more than $50 million. The academic plant has expanded dramatically, adding four new buildings. The number of academic programs has grown to include, among others, chiropractic, pharmacy, and D’Youville is now awarding doctoral degrees. Sister Denise earned her baccalaureate at D’Youville College. Boston University granted her a master’s degree in sociology, and at University of Massachusetts, she earned her doctorate.

“Tgive he decision, to your kidney,

is a monumental one.”

Lisa Brennan, class of ’08 gave back in a very special way. In the fall of 2004, a young lady named Lisa Ann Brennan began her matriculation at D’Youville. In the course of those exciting but more often confusing first days, this

fulling a mission freshman found great support from a young man, Ryan Miller, who at that time was in his third year at the college.

three young men at St. Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo, and one was a 2000 graduate of DYC, Andrew Lauricella.

From those early days, a strong bond was established. Ryan remarked, “Lisa and I were best of friends all through college and never lost touch even after graduation. We hit it off immediately, and she became like a sister to me. We hung out a lot but never dated. I consider her a best friend as well as her entire family.”

He said that at about the age of 12, he had thoughts about the priesthood. At age 18 those thoughts were more defined and he had no doubts but that his life would be doing the work of a diocesan priest.

Ryan, now married to Nicole, another D’Youville graduate and expecting their first child, learned that unless he had a kidney transplant, he would not live more than five to seven years. When Lisa, now a faculty member at the Stanley G. Falk School in Buffalo, learned this devastating news regarding her friend, she decided that she would be tested to see if she would be a possible donor. “I didn’t tell Ryan that I would be a possible donor. I didn’t tell Ryan that I would be tested and I really did not think I would be a good match, but thankfully, I was!” she exclaimed. She said that she decided after hearing a news report of a man who donated his kidney to a complete stranger. “That story firmed up my thinking.” This little anecdote describes how deep a friendship can be and how it can affect your life and help a friend. Giving part of yourself to help a friend to continue his life is a magnanimous gift. Ryan and Lisa came through their surgeries, and Ryan is recovering and happy to know he has a full life before him.

“happens Great synergy when they bring whatever gifts they have.”

It is a rare occurrence when a D’Youville College alumnus is ordained to the priesthood. Yet, it happened this past June when Bishop Edward U. Kmiec ordained

34

Shortly before his ordination, Andrew expressed excitement at the idea of a future as a diocesan priest. His hope was to be ministering in a parish. Though greatly anticipating the new role, he expressed some regrets at having to leave seminary life and all the deep roots and friends he established there. In the course of his studies, this former parishioner of St. Margaret’s Parish in Buffalo had assignments serving Fourteen Holy Helpers Parish in West Seneca, Immaculate Conception Parish in Wellsville and St. Andrew’s Parish in Kenmore. He remarked that there is a great benefit to being involved in parish work. He said in each there was a lesson to be learned and enjoyed. “Each in its own way has great power that one can feel when everyone comes to the table and great synergy happens when they bring whatever gifts they have.” Additionally, Father Lauricella, in the course of his formation, completed fieldwork with the Central City Practicum, Cephas Prison Ministry, and Vive La Casa Refugee Shelter. Though he enjoyed the variety of these experiences, he really hoped that his assignment would be to work in a parish. Parish work is where his heart is. Father Lauricella had the great joy, after ordination, of an assignment as a parochial vicar at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Niagara Falls.

“.equality ..focused on for all.” And another member of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart has distinguished herself in fields that ultimately will result in a better life for communities worldwide. Sister Rosalie Bertell, gnsh, phd, a member of the class of 1951 was an

internationally recognized environmental epidemiologist, cancer researcher and public health advocate. She began her career in these fields as a researcher at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in the 1970s, where she served for eight years as a senior cancer research scientist. That was just the beginning of her lifelong advocacy for a global community, focused on equality for all. She wrote, “The concept of a global community, founded on justice, equality, fair trade and peaceful cohabitation of our home earth, is still a compelling vision.” She had a great concern about the global deficit consumption of natural resources, effectively stealing from future generations. She further wrote, “Perhaps the greatest destabilizing fact of today’s world is not the economic differences, but rather the plundering of natural resources.” Sister firmly believed that economically sound nations have the responsibility to invest in the nations and communities that suffer from economic depression. Sister wrote, “Both planning and implementation must be transparent. The basis of decision making cannot be only economic, especially the economic advantage of one as a few nations. It must include universal social benefits, equitable distribution of wealth and the survival and well being of this planet, our life support system.” Sister was an associate professor of mathematics at D’Youville from 1969 to 1973. In 1984, Sister Rosalie established the International Institute of Concern for Public Health. For several years, she was editor in chief of International Perspectives in Public Health. As she travelled the world educating and advocating, her focus was on the broader issue of aspects of the global community. Sister Rosalie died June 14, 2012 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Langhorne, Pa. She spent 53 years in a religious life.

celebrating D’Youville Hello, fellow alums! As the holiday season draws near, we as an alumni association have much to be thankful and celebrate. The board of directors worked tirelessly to increase opportunities for alumni to gather and to increase fundraising efforts for the Sister Mary Charlotte Barton Alumni Kinship Scholarship fund. Thanks to so many of you, their efforts paid off. In looking back over the year, I believe the highlight was our first Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament. Thanks to so many who supported the tournament, we were able to raise $7,756 dollars for the scholarship fund! The Second Annual Alumni Awards Dinner was another successful fundraiser for the scholarship fund. Between both events, we were able to add over $9,000 to the scholarship fund. Our student scholarship recipients are truly grateful for your support, as is the entire alumni association board of directors. We certainly cannot accomplish anything without you, our alumni and friends! In addition to the success of our golf tournament, the board has been looking for more opportunities to provide social, educational engagement and general online benefits to you. As your president, I welcome any suggestions, feedback or comments. If I do not hear about it, I cannot do anything about it, so please let me know if the board of directors is working hard enough on your behalf. Message from the President

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA

Award

Sister Mary Finnick graduated from D’Youville in 1960 with her degree in nursing. She earned her master’s degree in nursing administration from Catholic University and her doctorate in education administration from Temple University in 1984. In the 52 years since her graduation from D’Youville, she has carried the spirit of St. Marguerite d’Youville, the mission of the Grey Nuns and the lessons learned in her nursing classes to a variety of places around the world.

Sister Mary E. Finnick gnsh, phd Nursing alums returned on Saturday for a bus tour of area hospitals and a luncheon, sponsored by the D’Youville College School of Nursing. (l to r) Mary Crowley Carosella ’52, Joan Wagner Bianchi ’52, Genevieve McNeil Dobmeier ’52 and Mary Matthew’s, Joan’s daughter.

Her quiet unassuming ways made for a lasting remembrance for those whom she taught or to whom she ministered. One former student stated, “To be taught by Sister Mary Finnick was a privilege. She went beyond teaching textbook material and taught us through deed and action what it means to be a nurse. She taught us that we were to see our patients as a gift and that our work was meant to bring comfort and peace during a time of distress and uncertainty.” After leaving parish work, retirement was still not on the horizon. In 2005, she went to Haiti to begin a new chapter of ministry. Sister Mary continues to live and work running the Matthew 25 Guest House in Port of Prince. Her work at the house and building relationships with the Haitian people positioned her to make significant contributions to relief efforts after the earthquake struck in January 2010. Matthew 25 House immediately responded by emptying its storerooms to provide emergency medical supplies and foodstuffs to the many homeless people following the earthquake. In a short time, 2,000 people were living in the tent city that evolved from the donation of tents from Lions International. In the midst of it all Sister Mary Finnick calmly, lovingly, directing, coordinating and caring for God’s people. Two years later the suffering of the Haitian people continues as donated funds have yet to be distributed. To quote Sister Mary, “The greatest single problem is that government agencies have come into Haiti with a set idea of the needs of the people. I am not naïve, I know there is a lot of corruption,” however the Haitians should be consulted regarding their real needs.” “I have been blessed by God and will do His work for as long as He allows me to.”

Michael F. & Eleaine dillon Presidential scholarship reception september 2O, 2O12

The 2010 recipient, Maxwell Johnson, and his mom, Paula Johnson.

On September 20, an outstanding group of more than 160 individuals attended the 26th Annual Michael F. & Eleaine Dillon Presidential Endowed Scholarship reception held in the Blue Lounge of the College Center.   The most prestigious scholarship awarded by D’Youville College honors the contributions of the Michael F. and Eleaine Dillon family to the college. The scholarship covers full tuition for the completion of a four-year bachelor, or a five-year dual degree program and includes twenty-five percent discount for on-campus housing. This year’s scholarship recipient is Daniel Fiorini, a Baldwinsville, New York native enrolled in the Early Assurance PrePharmacy program. Daniel is a member of the National Honor Society and an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America. He attended the event with his family and is most grateful to have been chosen to receive the Dillon Presidential Scholarship. Maxwell Johnson, the 2010-11 recipient was also in attendance with his family. Maxwell, a Buffalo native, is in his third year as a nursing student where he is excelling in the program. His dedication provides evidence of his commitment to becoming a professional nurse; he plans to work in an emergency room in the future.

The event, also a showcase to recognize local community leaders, honored both Lana D. Benatovich and Cash Cunningham. Ms. Benatovich, president of the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York, stated, “D’Youville, in addition to being an institution of faith and excellence, has its arms always open and ready to embrace her neighbors on the West Side

and in all of Buffalo…” Mr. Cunningham, honored for his selfless hours committed to auctioneering for charity events, stated, “Together we learned the old adage, ‘It’s better to give than to receive’ is really true. We are so fortunate to be able to give, and so thankful that we not need to receive. That whatever resources we give pale in

comparison to the warm feelings that we receive.” A highlight of the evening was the announcement made by the Honorable Kevin Dillon, a justice of the New York State Supreme Court and son of the late Justice Michael F. Dillon and Eleaine Tighe Dillon, that the scholarship had reached the $1,000,000 endowment level. This year’s event raised over $84,000. In his address, Dillon congratulated the students and award recipients and told how his family greatly respects education. He related the experiences he had as a child, one of nine, and the importance of education to his parents, especially his father, Michael F. Dillon.

(l to r) Robert, Amanda, Natalie, Kimberly ’12, Katherine and Joan Vetter ’86 smile proudly as another Vetter becomes a DYC alum.

TRUE affinity for DYC Joan Vetter graduated from D’Youville College in 1986 with her degree in nursing. Twenty-six years later, her daughter Kimberly graduated from D’Youville with her degree in nursing. Joan’s other daughter, Natalie, plans to graduate from D’Youville with her physician assistant degree in 2015 and Joan’s twin daughters Katherine and Amanda are freshmen starting studies on their degrees in occupational therapy as members of the D’Youville Class of 2017. A family tradition indeed! “All the girls decided on their careers and D’Youville on their own,” said their mom Joan, a nurse manager on the cardiac floor at Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo. “I always wanted to be a nurse myself and after 25 years I still find satisfaction in helping people.” The Vetter girls “shadowed” at Mercy Hospital and met a number of D’Youville health care graduates who impressed them with their professionalism and expertise. The hospital collaborates with local high schools and brings in students to see “the real world” of health care up close. Kimberly, echoing her mom, said, “My first nursing memory was being a little girl and reading my mom’s nursing books; I was so fascinated with how our bodies work. In addition, the only thing I ever wanted to do was to take care of people who need help the most.” Natalie, who is in the physician assistant program, says, “With my mother as my role model, I have envisioned myself as a health care professional since I was a young girl. I know I am exactly where I need to be to achieve this goal.” Amanda, just starting her first year at the college, already feels at home at her mom’s alma mater. “I am so thankful to my parents and to God for giving me the opportunity to earn a college education at D’Youville because even though I have not been here long, it is already becoming my second home.” The Vetter family embodies the spirit of Saint Marguerite d’Youville, and their accomplishments reflects the mission of the college “to contribute to the world community by leading compassionate, productive and responsible lives.” D’Youville is extremely proud of the Vetter family.

Health sponsor the awards. “The awards recognize the business acumen and community spirit of these women,” Business First publisher Jack Connors said. Sister Denise was cited for her long time leadership of D’Youville and the progress made during the more than three decades of her presidency.

’70 In October of 2012, Dr. Mary Anne Dumas was chosen to be inducted into the Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). The selection as a FAAN is extremely prestigious. Mary Anne stated, “I am proud to be inducted and bring honor to DYC as member of the alumni family.” We are certainly proud of you, Mary Anne, and offer our congratulations.

’73 Kaleida Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary Beth Hess Farruggio, MS, RN, CNNA-BC, as lead chief nursing officer. Mary Beth will continue in her current role as Chief Nursing Officer at DeGraff Memorial and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospitals. As lead chief nursing officer, Mary Beth is accountable for developing system-wide nursing practices and implementing a patient-focused management program. Mary Beth will also collaborate with Kaleida Health’s labor partners to provide a positive and conducive working relationship. “We are pleased to welcome Mary Beth to this new role,” said Cheryl Klass, senior vice president of operations. “Mary Beth’s extensive nursing leadership will help ensure seamless quality care for patients at both the downtown and suburban campuses.” Keep up the great work Mary Beth as you continue to live the mission of DYC in the larger Western New York community. On February 18, 2012, Rita M. Whalen married James E. Farrell at The Chapel of Prayer in St. Augustine, Fla. Also in attendance was Rita Cusimano Whalen 47,

mother of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. Farrell are residing in Deland, Florida. Best wishes to Rita and James on their new life together.

’78 Thomas B. Golden writes; “After graduating from D’Youville in 1978 with my BSN in hand, I had a very rewarding period in my life working and sometimes meeting fellow D’Youville grads in the Dallas, Texas area.  Now that I am retired and living in Cuenca, Ecuador, I have found a new interest in the game of futbol (soccer, as we know it). I started a gringo fan club for our local professional team and had a good turnout of interested folks from the local gringo community.  At the second meeting, I overheard a few familiar words from the table next to mine and turned to meet a fellow retired nurse also from the most famous school in the Buffalo, N.Y. area, D’Youville College.  It’s a small world once again.” Perhaps Thomas would be willing to be a tour guide for any DYC alum who makes the trip to his part of the world.

’80 Joyce Markiewicz, president and CEO of Catholic Health Home Care, received the Nonprofit Leadership Award at the Women of Influence luncheon. Joyce oversees multiple home care agencies, home health related services and an independent living program.  They include: McAuley Seton Home Care, Sisters Long Term Home Health Care, Mercy Home Care, Catholic Health Infusion Pharmacy, Catholic Health Long Term Pharmacy, Living Independently for Elders and Catholic Health Home Respiratory Services. These programs and services provide a comprehensive continuum of care providing more than 175,000 patient visits annually, according to Catholic Health Home Care. She is a member of the board of directors of Catholic Health Continuing Care Division and Foundation and Health Home Partners of Western New York.  Joyce is a mentor at the

’88 Cory Shaffer, founder and president of Mobile Primary Care, Inc., received the Award for Innovation at the annual Women of Influence Luncheon sponsored by Business First, Lake Shore Bank and Kaleida Health. Her company, founded by Cory and two partners in 2007, consists of eleven nurse practitioners who do home visits for the elderly or homebound.  They provide primary care to more than 2,000 patients, and currently cover the six counties of Western New York. “Elderly patients can’t always get the medical care they need, so we bring it to them and in a way you would want your mother or father treated – care and compassion,” she said. The luncheon was certainly a D’Youville affair with Cory, Joyce Markiewicz ’80, and Sister Denise ’67 earning awards for their service to the community.
