A Most Blessed Christmas from St. Charles Borromeo!

The Holy Family These days everyone is thinking about resolutions for this New Year. Here is a paraphrase of the Prayer of St. Francis that in our parish family we might grow as the instruments of the Lord’s presence as part of our New Year’s resolutions. Lord, make our parish the instrument of Your presence. Help us to depend not on collections and committees, but on a lively faith. Keep us open to build bridges between people, and not isolate into factions. Guide us to find words that encourage and affirm rather than criticize or belittle. Give us the sensitivity to listen to the needs and hurts of others and not to react with cynicism or selfishness. For we believe that it is ours to build community where there is isolation, To proclaim gospel wholeness where there is brokenness, And to replace the shallow promises made by our world with the promise and the presence of the Risen Lord Jesus.

Borromeo: “What a Warm and Loving Family” Recently I heard a newly registered family say that they have been to many different churches, but they have found the Borromeo Family to be the most warm and friendly and welcoming. we are truly a loving family brought together by Jesus! Many others have said the same thing.

A Most Blessed New Year! Thank You and God Love You! Our Borromeo Parish Family is so grateful to all who have donated in so many ways to build up Jesus’ Kingdom in and through our Parish Family: through service and time—through outreach and works of charity and justice and peace and life and love—and through monetary support weekly, monthly, corporate matching gifts, capital improvements and stock and dividends, etc. THANK YOU! This past week I was again inspired by such a generous outpouring through our Giving Tree. Nearly a thousand ornament gifts and donations were channeled from you and the Academy through so many volunteers and our St. Vincent de Paul Society and Mini-Vinnies. You made Christmas for so many families so full of Jesus’ love and presence. God Love You! Also, a huge THANK YOU to all who gave so much prayerful love to make our Christmas Masses so uplifting and uniting: all who decorated and cleaned and changed lights, sang and played music, served and lectored, greeted and ushered, distributed Holy Communion and all who prayed and sang so beautifully—choir and congregation—making Jesus Really Present. I hope you encountered Jesus and His Love and Peace. I know I did.

My heartfelt thanks to all who sent cards and such kind words of support and prayer and so many delicious gifts. You truly know how to make us and one another feel loved and appreciated.

Prayer of the Week Mary, our mother, mother of all, we journey as pilgrims to sacred spaces, where all are welcomed, all are family. Guide our steps as we search for your face in the faces of those who suffer, those who thirst for healing, for justice, for peace. May we know the place we are called to when we recognize and embrace them, and know we have reached home. (Jane Deren, “Prayer of Global Solidarity”)

Joke of the Week A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: “We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods.” The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!” Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family! Your brother in Jesus,

Father John

THANK YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others. “...as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” Colossians 3:13 Forgiveness—one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone—maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone right now. We pray that God will provide us the strength to forgive those that have hurt us.

Gospel Reflection Mary and Joseph, obedient Jewish parents, presented Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem in today’s gospel. He was given the name requested of the angel at the annunciation: Jesus. An unusual thing happened at the Temple, however, when a holy man named Simeon approached the family. Simeon foretold several things about Jesus’ life including the fact that Jesus was the long awaited Messiah. Not only was he to be the salvation of Israel, but he would also bring light to the Gentiles. He also blessed Mary and Joseph saying that Mary would feel great pain in her life because of her child. When the ritual was complete at the Temple, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus returned to Nazareth where Jesus would grow and learn. Parents can appreciate the ritual action of Mary and Joseph today as they presented Jesus at the Temple. Most of us have acted similarly in presenting our children for baptism in our own church. These symbolic actions are important milestones, but we certainly know as parents that sacramental moments are only benchmarks. The everyday living out of our faith is truly who we are. Mary, Joseph and Jesus returned to Nazareth where Jesus grew and learned, and it was in the ordinariness of Jesus’ life that he grew in the favor of God’s love. It is the same for us as we help shape who our children will become: daughters and sons of God!

One of the most significant ritual moments in my life that I recall is . . . According to Simeon, Jesus was to be light for all people. I see the light of Jesus in the world when . . .

We offer our prayerful sympathy to Chasity (Michael) Murray on the death of her father Michael Smith. May he and all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Today is the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We hear the words: “The Child grew and be-

came strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon Him.” As we remember the poor during this New Year may we also grow in wisdom and have the favor of God upon us.

Please continue to support the Society of St. Vincent de Paul this year so that together we can continue to bring comfort and peace to our brothers and sisters who are suffering. For more information, call Joyce Cain at 636-448-2021.

GIVING TREE 2014 Thank you to the many facets of the St. Charles Borromeo Family who have come forward to help those less fortunate in our own community this Christmas Season. Over 95 families will enjoy a less stressful holiday season thanks to your generosity. Look for more specific information on this activity in upcoming bulletins. God bless your family,

A Most Blessed Christmas from St. Charles Borromeo!

St. Charles Borromeo School Dear Parishioners, I offer special prayers for you on this Feast of the Holy Family. The family is the foundation of society and it is within families that our faith is handed down to the next generations. Our extended family includes St. Charles Borromeo Parish and School. Your decision to send your child to our school is the way in which we can support you in your role as the leader of the family. I ask all families to prayerfully consider enrolling their children in St. Charles Borromeo School. We offer a solid curriculum that includes daily practice of Catholic Christianity and instruction. Your children will be educated in a safe, caring Catholic environment steeped in the traditions of the Catholic Church. Students and teachers pray each day together, attend Mass twice each week, and are actively involved in Christian service and learning. There are costs associated with educating children no matter what school they attend. Here are St. Charles Borromeo the value is priceless and eternal! Please come and see what we have to offer families. Call our school office at 946-2713 to set up an appointment. Pay special attention to the 2nd reading today! —Pope John Paul II Evangelium Vitae, 28

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph, December 28, 2014

St. Charles Borromeo Religious Education Dear Parishioners, Happy Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! I’m thankful for the generous and holy families we have in our parish. I thank you for your generous acts of stewardship – your personal sharing in the joy of returning your prayers, time and gifts that God has given you, our parish community, especially in the area of education. There are no PSR classes today, however, they resume next week, January 4, 2015. Thank you to the many families who donated so many hats, socks, gloves, and mittens to the PSR collection for Youth in Need. We delivered a four large bags over stuffed with them and the staff and clients were overwhelmed with joy. Our Confirmation students will be experiencing the Luke 18 retreat right here on our campus in just two weeks, January 9 -11. I ask that you keep them and all those hosting the retreat and the adults in your prayers. My prayers for you and your family to continue to have a most blessed Christmas season,

Mrs. Becca McCullough

Religious DVDs for Adult Catholic Parishioners Christian Religious Media materials are an excellent way to evangelize those who want to come to a deeper understanding of Jesus Christ in their lives. Many adults participate in parish programs, but sometimes want to learn individually, at their own schedule, and with time for personal prayer and reflection. The Religious Education Media Center provides a wonderful opportunity for adults to discover the profound resources available for growth in our Holy Catholic Faith. Currently, there are almost 500 DVDs under topics of: Sacred Scripture, Doctrine/Sacraments, Morality/Spirituality. Items may be borrowed by individual Catholic parishioners free of charge from the Archdiocesan Religious Education Media Center for two-four weeks, depending on length, and can be mailed to your home address or to the parish. Phone 314-792-7360, or book online at www.reledmediacenter.com. The password to enter the online catalog and booking system is media. The only charge is to mail the media back to the Catholic Education Center. Here’s a sample: FAITH CLIPS Word on Fire 2007 Rev. Robert E. Barron DVD670 H/A 114min Father Robert Barron answers frequently asked questions about the faith across diverse topics: God; Jesus; The Trinity; Prayer; Spiritual Life. Father Barron is one of the great spiritual teachers of our time who can clearly explain what the Church believes and why. He shares the Gospel through his website, WordOnFire.org, which draws more than a million visitors a year. These match the 50 question/answers included in the Catholicism series by Father Barron, DVD685.

FAMILY PRAYER We are a family. For one another, we are love and trial, strength and trouble. Even when far apart, we belong to one another and pray for one another. We join now to give thanks to our God and ask God’s blessing on this family (those who are present and those who are not here). Read Colossians 3:12-17 May the Lord Jesus, who lived with His holy family in Nazareth, dwell also with our family, keep it from all evil, and make all of us one in heart and mind. Amen.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, may you be adorned with His love, graced with His peace, and filled with His presence.

A Most Blessed Christmas from St. Charles Borromeo!

Recommended Holiday Viewing:

Take a moment to sit back, put up your feet, and enjoy The Forsaken on Tuesday, December 30 on EWTN at 5:30pm. This thirty minute documentary, featuring the Archdiocese of St. Louis mission program Pan y Amor, will open your eyes to the lives of children who have been rescued from living on the streets of Cochabamba and La Paz, Bolivia. Prior to being rescued, these children barely survived and often went to sleep hungry and on the streets. Emmy award winner Chuck Neff does an extraordinary job of capturing the struggles of these innocent children and their quest for a brighter future. This is a show you don’t want to miss!

Frequently Asked Questions What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? How do I register? All Catholics living within the Parish boundaries and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does not make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs. You can register online, or by coming to the parish office, and filling out a short registration form. How do I request a hospital visit, Communion call, Anointing of the Sick, or be put on the prayer list? Please call the parish office at 946-1893. How do I have my child Baptized? The parents must be registered in the parish and be active for at least 3 months before this Sacrament. Baptisms are the first and third Sundays of each month at 1:00. You also have the option of celebrating the Sacrament during one of our weekend Masses. Please consult our parish priests for this option. How do I get married in the Church? As soon as marriage is contemplated, contact one of the parish priests. Do not set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.

CRHP

Christ Renews His Parish A witness from a Borromeo Member Since CRHP weekend, I have faced several situations where I normally would have either gotten angry, scared, or just would not have dealt with the situation. I have found myself turning to the Bible for answers on how to deal with these situations. Things don’t bother me near as much or near as long. I appreciate my family much more than before and I am recognizing God and His works every day. I would call CRHP weekend sort of a “rubber meets the road” class for applying religion to my life. I have added several people to my life that I now call brothers. The CRHP weekend was the most significant religious experience that I have ever had. It is the “how-to” handbook that most cradle Catholics never obtain. It is not a weekend retreat; it is a rebirth of your life with God as your guide.

Give Yourself the Gift of Time—You Deserve It! Here is your invitation from Jesus to our Borromeo Christ Renews His Parish Weekend

Are you looking to grow spiritually?

Would you like to connect with other parishioners? Are you wondering what God is asking you to do? If you have answered YES to any of these questions, please consider joining us for a CRHP retreat.

What is CRHP? CRHP is Christ Renews His Parish. CRHP is a Gift from the Lord. You are invited to take time out of your busy life to discover how to connect your Catholic faith more deeply with your life.

What happens during the renewal weekend? You will hear others sharing their faith journey, time for silent and shared prayer, and sacraments. This will be a time to pray, rethink priorities and intensify your relationship with Jesus. CRHP provides the opportunity to know others in our parish and grow as a faith community.

So what about you? Are you ready to say YES to the Lord? If you feel called to participate, please fill in below and return it to the parish office or place it in the offertory basket. CRHP Weekends: January 17/18 (for men) and February 7/8 (for women) Name___________________________________
