Honor Roll of Donors 2014

While traveling the country in this first year as president, what I have most enjoyed are the conversations with alumnae, alumni, and friends of the College as we have come together to share our passion for liberal education and our commitment to Randolph College. As we exchanged our stories and explored our hopes for the future of the College, it became clear that the women and men educated at Randolph College not only appreciate the generosity that made their own college experiences possible, they understand and embrace their responsibility to make the Randolph education accessible to future generations of students. Randolph College could not provide the outstanding liberal arts education for which it is known—and many of our students would not be able to afford it—were it not for the commitment and generosity of our donors. Whether through designated support of specific initiatives or through broad-based support of the College through contributions to the Annual Fund, our donors make it possible for us to put the promise of a Randolph education into practice. This publication includes the names of those who made philanthropic donations to the College during the most recent fiscal year, along with examples of how those gifts are helping Randolph to fulfill its mission. By giving back to the College, our generous alumnae and alumni pay the Randolph experience forward, providing outstanding educational opportunities for current and future cohorts of students. On behalf of Randolph College, I thank you for your continued generosity and support. Vita abundantior,

Bradley W. Bateman

A lecture by novelist/memoirist Anchee Min kicked off Randolph College’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of Pearl S. Buck’s graduation from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1914. Supported by the C. William Gibson, Jr. Memorial Lecture Fund, Min’s lecture detailed how she discovered Pearl S. Buck and developed a love for her work. Lecture funds such as the Gibson Fund ensure that our campus and local communities have access to a fascinating array of speakers each year.

SUMMER AT SEA

R

ick Barnes, the Mabel Sabel Girard Chair in Psychology, spent this past summer with Semester at Sea, a program sponsored by the University of Virginia and administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education. On this voyage to northern Europe and Scandinavia, Barnes taught social psychology and a course in sustainable lifestyles, exploring sustainable urban design in port cities in Ireland, Sweden, and Finland. “We visited the Hammarby Sjostad development in Stockholm and met with city planners in Helsinki to learn about their green infrastructure and their strategic plan for coping with climate change,” Barnes said. Information gathered on this voyage will inform his classes in environmental psychology and environmental studies at Randolph College. Funds from the estate of Mary Sabel Girard ’34 will also enable Barnes to attend the annual conference of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education in Portland, Oregon this fall.

SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES MODEL U.N. DELEGATION REPRESENTS MALTA Randolph College’s Model United Nations team spent a week in New York City this spring representing Malta in the National Model United Nations Conference. Randolph’s team was named an Honorable Mention Delegation; in addition, six Randolph students—including five who were participating in Model U.N. for the first time—won awards for position papers they authored. Student travel and participation in the Model U.N. program is made possible by the Sheldon and Chrystine Hicks Endowed Global Studies Fund through a generous gift from Marilyn Hicks Fitzgerald ’68 and Michael P. Fitzgerald, and by the Ernest A. Duff Latin American Studies Fund.

STUDENTS PRESENT RESEARCH AT REGIONAL CONFERENCES During the 2013-2014 academic year, a gift from the Barbara C. Noyes Charitable Foundation made it possible for Randolph College students to present academic research at several notable conferences. Katherine Lesnak ’15 and Sydney Henson ’14 presented a paper at the Virginia Educational Research Association conference at the University of Virginia. The paper was titled “Science and Math Links: Research-Based Teaching Institute.” Lesnak and Henson also presented a paper with the same title at the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Research Conference for Undergraduate Scholarship, and again at the Randolph College Symposium of Artists and Scholars in April. “Science and Math Links: Research-Based Teaching Institute” is an on-going research project; as an extension of this research, the project team is currently writing a paper on an inquiry-based lesson on roller coasters for elementary school children.

PSYCHOLOGY CLASSES ENHANCED BY NEW RESEARCH EQUIPMENT An anonymous gift to elevate the academic student experience funded the purchase of 10 data collection systems for use in biology and psychology lab courses. The iWorx PK-TA Psychological Physiology Teaching Kits allow students to record physiological responses to psychological stimuli, including respiration rate, heart rate, pulse volume, and skin conductance and temperature. Within the lab setting, these data collection systems allow students to work in small groups on both predesigned projects and a final experiment that each group will independently design and carry out.

NATURAL SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS SUMMER RESEARCH ADDRESSES COASTAL EROSION By researching 12 bubbling bins of water and sand in the basement of Martin Science Building, two Randolph students hope to shed light on ways to reduce coastal erosion. “We are studying the way nutrients affect biofilm growth, and how the biofilm growth affects the way sediments erode in coastal lagoons,” Bri Conrad ’15 said. Conrad partnered on this project, funded by the Randolph College Summer Research Program, with Ryan Mahon ’16 and Sarah Sojka, a Randolph environmental studies and physics professor. Their goal is to find a way to promote biofilm growth and limit erosion, which would make it easier for organisms to survive off the coast of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The Summer Research Program is generously supported by contributions from the Hilseweck Student/Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Fund, the Jolley Foundation Student/Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Fund, the Muriel and John Landis Student/Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Fund, and the Carol G. Lovell Student/Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Program Fund.

ANNUAL CAMPUS FESTIVAL CELEBRATES THE WONDER OF SCIENCE Drone races, poetry and photography competitions, and a former astronaut—Lynchburg’s own Leland Melvin—highlighted the 6th annual Randolph College Science Festival, a series of free, public events that encourage the Lynchburg community to discover and celebrate the beauty and wonder of science. The multi-day event has grown significantly since it first began in 2009; this year’s Festival attracted more than 2000 people to 17 separate events, and more than 170 students volunteered. The Virginia Math and Science Coalition gave the Science Festival a Programs that Work award, which recognizes effective educational programs around the state. The Science Festival is supported by a generous 5-year grant given by William A. and Lynn Hume Stuart ’60 in honor of the Class of 1960, as well as by corporate sponsors including Areva, C. B. Fleet Company, and the Future Focus Foundation.

RISE AWARD RESULTS IN JAVA CERTIFICATION Recognizing that many research and higher level graduate courses in computer science require advanced understanding of and greater proficiency in Java, Alex Tran ’15 utilized his Randolph Innovative Student Experience (RISE) award to fund a summer-length independent study with Randolph physics professor Katrin Schenk. With the goal of obtaining the Associate and Professional Java SE 7 certifications from Oracle, the corporation that owns Java, Alex worked through three eminent books on Java programming—Java Puzzlers, Effective Java, and Java Concurrency in Practice—in addition to taking several on-line classes. For practical application of Java, Alex assisted another student researcher, Si Thu Aung ’16, with improving previously generated computer codes and addressing technical issues related to Schenk’s ongoing project using mobile devices to monitor medical conditions. Tran will finish his degree in computer engineering through Randolph’s 3/2 program with Washington University in St. Louis, where he also plans to earn a master’s degree. For fiscal year 2014, special support for the RISE program was provided by William A. and Lynn Hume Stuart ’60, along with members of the Class of 1960 in Lynn’s memory.

NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS EXPAND CATALOGUE

R

andolph College’s Natural History Collections offer students access to hundreds of zoological specimens including birds, mammals, fishes, reptiles, insects, marine invertebrates, and fossils. The collections also boast an

excellent herbarium containing thousands of specimens of plants indigenous or introduced to the eastern United States, specifically Central Virginia. A final feature is the large geology collection, featuring thousands of rock and mineral samples from around the world. Gifts from generous alumnae, alumni, and friends, in memory of Dorothy Crandall Bliss, have made possible the cataloguing of this extensive collection; as of 2013 the avian and mammalian collections have been comprehensively catalogued. Efforts to include the other specimen collections in the catalogue are ongoing. During the spring semester, approximately 30 students worked on the Natural History Collections project in some capacity. “I think the most important and energizing thing about the Natural History Collections Project is that it is so interdisciplinary; we have involved students with majors ranging from history, museum studies, sociology, and economics as well as the ‘obvious’ biology,” said Emily Smith ’12, collections manager. Smith’s own academic interests lean toward archaeology; natural history collections are invaluable to archaeologists for comparative studies of plant, animal, and human remains. Visit http://naturalhistory.go.randolphcollege.edu/ to explore the collections.

ALUMNA HONORS MUSIC PROFESSOR WITH NEW SCHOLARSHIP

I

n gratitude to her former R-MWC piano professor, Elaine Dahl St. Vincent, for her constant support and encouragement, Dr. Laura Geisel Sullivan, M.D. ’74 recently established the Elaine Dahl St. Vincent Endowed Music Scholarship Fund to benefit Randolph College students of piano. In creating the scholarship, Sullivan hopes to assist students who are committed students of piano but for whom a Randolph education is financially out of reach. St. Vincent served on the R-MWC faculty from 1947-1980 and chaired the Department of Music from 1957-1979. In 1971, the College awarded her the prestigious Gillie Larew Award for Distinguished Teaching.

ARTS AND LETTERS SCHWARTZ IS NAMED NEW MARY FRANCES WILLIAMS CHAIR David Schwartz was recently named the Mary Frances Williams Chair of Humanities, endowed by the Maier Foundation, Inc. A professor of philosophy, Schwartz teaches courses including Ethics and Public Life, Philosophy of Art, and Environmental Philosophy. His current scholarship is centered in the areas of art/aesthetics and the interdisciplinary field of evolutionary studies; works in progress include an article about aesthetic judgments of nature (does possessing scientific knowledge ‘improve’ one’s judgments of nature?) and an examination of the evolutionary origins of art (why did we evolve as beings who tend to make and/or enjoy art? Did it have biological survival value, or is it solely a cultural phenomenon?). Schwartz has also been working with colleagues to develop an inter-disciplinary Center for Evolutionary Studies at Randolph College.

3-D PRINTER ENHANCES TRADITION THROUGH TECHNOLOGY A new shared resource for the physics department and the Center for Ancient Drama, “Medusa” is a MakerBot Replicator Z18, a 3D printer that can make true-to-life models of the human head—perfect for creating the traditional masks used in Randolph’s biennial Greek play. Rather than making molds from papier maché, ancient drama interns can now generate the molds using Computer Assisted Design.

Scanning of the actors’ heads was completed thanks to a generous partnership with GoMeasure 3D, an imaging company in Amherst, while purchase of the printer was made possible by gifts from Andy Scott and John Scott in memory of their mother, R-MWC alumna, Martha Roddenbery Scott ’57, and Willard Johnson and Marilyn Hall in memory of their mother Margaret Ellis Johnson ’31, a Latin major and member of the Latin Club.

SYMPOSIUM EXPLORES THE LEGACY OF SLAVERY In conjunction with Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, the College hosted the three-day symposium, “Facing the Past, Freeing the Future: Slavery’s Legacy, Freedom’s Promise.” More than 20 scholars, performers, and descendants of former slaves addressed a variety of topics intended to help attendees understand slavery’s roots, history, and legacy. The symposium grew out of conversations related to a partnership that the College formed with Poplar Forest last year. John d’Entremont, the Theodore H. Jack Professor of History, said the title reflects the hope that participants, and the nation, can move past slavery’s legacy. “We want our descendants to be able to say we have truly put slavery behind us,” he stated. “They won’t be able to say that unless we face the reality of slavery and what it did to people, and the consequences of slavery and racism.” This event was funded by the Kennedy-Fitzgerald Visiting Professor Fund. 9

MAIER MUSEUM INTERNSHIP

E

ach summer, generous donors provide funding for a museum studies internship at the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College. Claire Sumner ’15, an art history, museum studies, and dance major, is the recipient of this year’s internship, sponsored by C. Michael and Elizabeth Earle Kojaian ’84. Sumner’s primary endeavor this summer was to research and write long labels (150-250 words on the artist and the painting, often including an artist bio and a short analysis of the work or its significance) for 25 paintings in the College’s collection currently housed in Lipscomb Library. A wonderful pre-professional experience, the Maier internship gives students immediate hands-on preparation for careers in the arts. The 2013 intern, Stormy Clowdis ’13, now works at Poplar Forest; Hannah Neiffert ’14, the 2012 intern, further enhanced her arts management skills this summer through a Lyric Opera internship funded by Matthew C. and Amanda Clark Fox ’67; 2011 intern Sylvia Tropp Noyes ’12, after working for Amazement Square immediately following graduation, now has the job of her dreams at Riverviews ArtSpace. Martha Johnson, museum director, said, “These internships are truly an important springboard for our students!”

CAMPUS LIFE

DAVENPORT LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Seventeen students were chosen from a pool of 59 applicants to participate in this year’s Davenport Leadership Institute, a signature element of the Susan F. Davenport Global Leadership Program. The comprehensive two-week summer leadership workshop builds from classroom study of leadership theory to practical application of leadership techniques through work with groups like Camp Kum-Ba-Yah, the Links Intercultural Institute, and Randolph College’s Class of 2018. Davenport Leaders especially enjoyed promoting science education and problem-solving by assisting with summer science camp at the Jubilee Family Development Center in Lynchburg. Our students helped young campers learn physics principles by building rockets and cars designed to transport eggs without breaking them. The Davenport Global Leadership Program was funded by Joseph Davenport in 2004 to honor the memory of his wife, Susan Funkhouser Davenport ’69. Davenport recently provided additional funding to endow this program, ensuring it will produce in perpetuity new generations of leaders from Randolph College.

NEW FITNESS EQUIPMENT ENHANCES RANDOLPH ATHLETIC AND DANCE CENTER A generous gift from an anonymous donor provided new cardio equipment for the weight room at the Randolph Athletic and Dance Center. In all, eight cardiovascular machines—five of which offer integrated monitors for television viewing—were purchased and installed, including three elliptical machines, two bikes, one arm bike, and two treadmills. The new equipment is heavily used by students, faculty, and staff. 11

STUDENTS GIVE BACK TO COMMUNITY THROUGH ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK

E

leven students accompanied the Director of Leadership and Engagement, Amanda Denny, to North Carolina in March for Randolph’s first Alternative Spring Break adventure. The group participated in several community service efforts, including clearing beaches of marine debris for the North Carolina Aquarium, serving food in the streets to the homeless population in Wilmington, and walking dogs for PAWS Place Animal Rescue in Winnabow. Back in Lynchburg, the group worked at New Vistas School to ready the playground for spring. Alternative breaks are drug- and alcohol-free experiences with an emphasis on group and individual reflection; students learn about the social issues associated with each of the non-profit organizations they support. The intensity of the experience usually increases the likelihood that students will apply the learning outcomes from the trip to their own campus communities once they return. 13

FACILITIES GROSVENOR APARTMENTS PROVIDE NEW HOUSING OPTIONS With funding from gifts to the Come Help Us Grow Campaign, the College purchased the Grosvenor Apartments—directly across Rivermont Avenue from the entrance to the College— in June 2013 and has worked diligently to renovate the property in time for the 2014-2015 academic year. The complex’s two buildings offer a total of 18 apartments; all received new paint, carpets, and furniture, as well as a new roof and gutters, landscaping, asphalt paving, and the installation of eight heat pumps. A new Simplex fire system will connect to the main campus fire panel, and wireless card access to exterior doors will be monitored from the Reception and Information Desk. Thanks to donor support, 44 senior students will enjoy residence hall-to-real world transitional housing in this new apartment setting. A professional residence hall staff member will also reside at the property.

PHASE ONE OF WRIGHT/CHEATHAM RENOVATION IS COMPLETED Just after Commencement, the College began Phase I of the renovation of Wright Hall and Cheatham Dining Hall. This portion of the project included the construction of the elevator serving Wright Hall which extends into Cheatham, necessitating renovation to the dining hall’s servery. The goals of the Cheatham project were to provide improved dining services for students, enhance the look of the dining facilities, and increase capacity to handle expected enrollment growth. The project included installing additional servery stations to reduce lines and to provide more food options for students. In addition, Cheatham was refreshed with attractive mill work, bright colors, as well as new lighting, beams and finished columns.

United Methodist Church Virginia Conference Each year Methodist churches throughout Virginia raise funds to support Randolph College and five other educational institutions within the state. In 2013-2014 the Virginia Conference supported the College’s religious activities and funded scholarships for Methodist students with a donation of $137,094. RANDOLPH HONORS DR. WILLIAM F. QUILLIAN

R

andolph College has renamed one of its giving societies in memory of William F. Quillian, Jr., the College’s fifth and longest-serving president. The Legacy Society, which recognizes those who have included the College in their estate plans, has been renamed the Quillian Society. Randolph College President Bradley W. Bateman announced the change during a donor recognition event at Reunion in May. Quillian, who died on March 4, led the College for 26 years and oversaw significant changes such as campus expansion and racial integration of the student body. “Upon his retirement, Dr. Quillian took on an even more active role in the Lynchburg community,” Bateman said. Quillian was co-founder and executive director of the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, which administers and invests gifts and bequests to benefit people living in the Lynchburg area. He also was the force behind the founding of the Lynchburg chapter of Leave A Legacy, a nonprofit that encourages people to include charitable causes in their wills. Also established in Quillian’s honor was the Quillian International Scholarship Fund, funded in full this year by an anonymous former trustee and alumna. In recognition of the College's efforts to build a diverse academic community, in appreciation of the impact the Latin American region and culture has on the United States, and with a desire to provide the opportunity for higher education to students from Latin America, preference for this scholarship will be given annually to students from Mexico and other Latin American countries.

The Quillian Society honors legacy gifts, recognizing those alumnae, alumni, family and friends who have included the College in their estate plans and informed us of their commitment. THANK YOU Not only do gifts make a difference, gifts ARE the difference—the difference between an adequate education and the high caliber, academically rigorous liberal arts foundation that has been the hallmark of Randolph College since it was founded as RandolphMacon Woman’s College in 1891. Randolph College students do not just sit in lecture courses on biology or psychology— they experiment in hands-on lab environments utilizing first-rate equipment and original research. Randolph College students do not just take dance courses—they study movement with an impressive range of visiting dancers from professional companies around the globe. Randolph College students do not just read about global politics on CNN.com—they draft resolutions, argue for improved public policy, and vote on important international issues in diplomatic simulations at the National Model United Nations Conference in New York City. These exceptional educational experiences are available to Randolph College students because you give. The commitment and support of our generous and loyal donors ensure that the Randolph education is the best education, preparing our graduates for continued learning, responsible and compassionate civic engagement, and the life more abundant. On behalf of every student who has reaped the benefits of the opportunities you have sown and every student who is now poised to make a positive difference in the world, we thank you.
