“The workshop was rich in the exchange of experience and information.” “Very instructive presentations.”
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The INTEREST Workshop initiative was launched in 2007 as a collaboration between Virology Education and Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD). Together with a prominent group of international experts in the field of HIV/AIDS, an annual international meeting in Africa has been developed. Known as the “African CROI” INTEREST brings together scientists involved in HIV treatment, pathogenesis, and prevention research in Africa to share pivotal findings, promote collaboration, and transfer experiences across several fields and many continents. The Workshop showcases cutting-edge knowledge in the fields of HIV diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of HIV-1 infection as well as to continue to foster the building of a community of African physicians and scientists who will discuss implementing local solutions for the management of patients living with HIV-1 infection and for the prevention of HIV transmission. The workshop focuses on issues of particular relevance for the African continent and gives opportunity to young researchers to present their data. The workshop atmosphere stimulates and facilitates discussion and interaction between participants.
MEETING DEMOGRAPHICS 474 registrations from 21 countries were received for the workshop. The majority of the respondents were medical doctors (57%) followed by patient/community representatives/activists (9%), students (8%), researchers (7%), nurses (5%), pharmacists (2%) and others (13%). Most of them are specialized in infectious disease (41%). 28% of the respondents reported their attention to the meeting was drawn by word-of-mouth (referred by colleague) and 27% were attracted by the Newsletters. Most of them (32%) were motivated to attend the event by the meeting objectives and by the scientific program (31%).
PROGRAM The program included 32 invited lectures, 8 oral abstract presentations, 18 short oral poster discussions and panel discussions. 12 speakers were invited by the sponsors for the satellite sessions. Ample time was allocated for discussion. The evaluation scores of the presentations can be found on the pages 15- 23.
INTENT TO CHANGE The conference was very well received which is reflected by the evaluation results. 90% of the respondents indicated that the lectures given in this workshop have increased their knowledge of the challenges of HIV care in RLS; 87% agreed that this program is beneficial for the clinical management of their patients; 90% reported that they intend to incorporate the new information into the care of their patients. Several factors that might prevent the respondents from implementing the gained knowledge are indicated on page 24.
FUTURE An average of 91% of the respondents agreed that the meeting objectives were met. 98% of the respondents reported that they will recommend this educational event to their peers and 95% of the respondents indicated that they plan to attend this workshop next time. The Organizing Secretariat is pleased with the evaluation results of the 10th INTEREST workshop and is looking forward to an even more successful edition in 2017!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION This is the evaluation report of the 10th International workshop on HIV Treatment, Pathogenesis and Prevention Research in Resource-Limited Settings, held on 3-6 May 2016 in the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The Organizing Committee, Scientific Committee and Organizing Secretariat highly value the opinion of the participants in order to further improve the quality of the workshop. Participants were asked to complete four evaluation forms, one form on each day, to share their opinion on several subjects.
BACKGROUND The INTEREST workshop was initiated in 2007 with the objective •
To function as a platform to discuss how recent insights in HIV may translate into new intervention strategies for areas with limited resources
•
To gather experts involved in HIV from different disciplines in an interactive workshop setting
•
To provide a platform for presentation of the latest developments in the field
•
To translate new data into treatment guidelines
•
To stimulate discussion and consensus on best practice
•
To give researchers a platform
FORMAT In 2016, this three and a half day African workshop consisted of plenary sessions with invited lectures by key opinion leaders, roundtable discussions, a debate, satellite symposia, oral abstract presentations and poster discussions. The setup of the workshop with ample time for Q&A, resulted in a highly interactive workshop. As in 2016, early morning sessions were held prior to the workshop program. In these sessions well-published world class scientists explained how they got started on a research career, gave advice and answered questions from aspiring junior researchers. Opportunity was given to early career investigators to meet the expert.
UNIQUE MEETING FEATURES The INTEREST workshop: •
is a unique scientific platform where clinicians and researchers from Africa and key persons from other parts of the world are brought together to present and discuss the latest developments in treatment, pathogenesis and prevention research
•
offers a unique platform to discuss issues of particular relevance for the African continent. It is referred to as “The African CROI”.
•
provides a forum for high-level exchange of scientific advances that will improve the prevention of HIV infection and the care of people living with HIV in Africa.
•
is a critical element of strengthening the African community and forging new collaborations to advance the African medical research agenda
•
gives young researchers the possibility to present their data and to communicate with colleagues and key persons in the field.

PARTICIPANTS’ FEEDBACK Challenges faced by participants in daily practice: •
Lack of basic HBV, HCV drugs in Africa (sub-Saharan)
•
Not enough personnel, personnel not paid but working demands a lot, authorities changing the skilled personnel to other services not involved with the management of HIV patients
•
Skilled personnel are not being heard or involved in decision making
•
Shortage of manpower and the refusal of some of our patients to comply/adhere to their treatment due to some cultural or religious orientation
•
The lack of viral load testing for HIV positive patients
•
The large patient load and inadequate HRH, loss to follow up by clients
•
Cultural and structural barriers to uptake. This needs to be addressed more holistically
•
Lack of collaboration between patients and managers
•
Poverty and analphabetism
•
Lack of means of transportation, lack of electricity, insignificant salary
•
Access to recent publications and scientific journals
Suggestions: •
As the recommendation of WHO said: test and treat, talk and discuss about the management of new increasing number of resistant patients, because more patients on treatment may lead to more resistant cases
•
Concrete evidence of safety and efficacy of DTG and TAF for pregnant women and TB patients
•
The topics discussed were excellent and should be retaken again
•
Management strategies for co-infected patients with HIV and HTLV/HepB/HepC/TB
•
Pathogenesis at the end of a program
•
Research on HIV cure and on HIV vaccine
•
Researches on superior drugs in relation to HIV pregnant women and TB-HIV co-infected patients
•
The etiological relationships between HIV/Aids and/or its treatment and other chronic communicable or noncommunicable diseases especially in the context of sub-Saharan Africa
•
Utilization of DTG in infected females and children
•
Evaluate the use of viral load in the patient follow up in Africa
•
More debates !
•
Biologists should be encouraged more to engage in this sort of forum, to speak about the diagnostic methods
•
In 2017, invite the CBO (community based organization) because they play an important role in our health system
•
Personnel safety regarding hepatitis infections
•
More debates, very good to get audience involvement
•
Extend time for poster discussions to 7 minutes
•
More clarification on transition strategies from pediatric to adult HIV care
•
Take questions after each presentation
•
Allocate more slots for young emerging researchers/scientists from resource limited settings
Evaluation Report - 10th INTEREST Workshop 3 - 6 May 2016, Yaoundé, Cameroon

CONCLUSION The Organizers are pleased with the outcomes of the evaluation of the 10th INTEREST workshop. The INTEREST workshop aims at continuing to offer a platform to exchange the medical information and new treatment results, and to discuss these with the experts active in the different disciplines. The results of the evaluation will help the organizers not only to improve the quality of the INTEREST workshop, but on a larger scale, the level of knowledge of HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa. The large participation of French speaking delegates and their active participation in the program and Q&A rounds has encouraged the organizers to continue to offer the workshop in both English and French in 2017. The 2017 workshop is scheduled to take place in the first week of May. The location will be communicated as early as possible.
