2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal If you have not made your contribution to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Catholic Appeal, please consider doing via mail, online at jolietdiocese.org, or by returning one of our Commitment/In-Pew Weekend envelopes at Mass. One pledge can make a difference, especially when combined with all of the other pledges made throughout the diocese. Please prayerfully consider providing your financial support to this Appeal. You can and will make a difference by “Extending God’s Mercy!” After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $192,199 in paid pledges, 65% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul,

Church Restoration The Church Restoration Project should be completed on March 16 and we will begin celebrating weekday Masses in the church once again on Wednesday, March 25th. We will be putting out information regarding the blessing of the work done in the church and a flyer explaining the entire project after Easter.

Lent Lent is in full swing. Please do not forget our parish mission March 2-3 with Fr. Martis. There are morning and evening sessions. The morning sessions will be in the Holy Family Chapel and the evening sessions will be held in the parish church.

Fish Fry and Stations Come for fish in the Ministry Center Social Hall and then pray the stations of the cross with us on Fridays at 7 pm in the parish church. Purchase of House at 115 N. Brainard After significant consultation with the entire parish council and finance commission of the parish as well as officials from the Diocese of Joliet, Saints Peter and Paul Parish was able to purchase the home at 115 N. Brainard Street. The decision was made to purchase this property for a number of reasons: 1) it is immediately adjacent to our parish property and can be advantageous should any expansion be needed in the future; 2) the property may not come up for sale again for a very long time and the price was right; 3) and most importantly, the house is immediately livable and saves us the cost of renting a home to be the convent for our Sisters of Saint Francis from Lemont; 4) the value of the house will not go down in value should the parish decide to sell it in the future; 5) although this made a significant depletion of our parish savings, the parish was able to purchase the home using only our parish savings. (continued from previous page)

We would like to give a special thanks to the Anderson Family who sold the house to the parish and we wish them well as they build a new home.

May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ,

Fr. Thomas A. Milota

PLEASE TAKE NOTE! Due to the sanctuary restoration, all weekday Masses, confessions and prayer services will be held in the Holy Family Chapel in the Ministry Center unless otherwise indicated. MASSES ON SUNDAYS AND SATURDAY EVENINGS WILL CONTINUE TO BE CELEBRATED IN THE PARISH CHURCH. **Confessions and Rosary on Tuesday evenings, as well as Friday evening Stations, will be held in the church.

LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Mark’s Gospel Corner Today’s Gospel is taken from Mark 1:12-15. Having just been baptized in the Jordon, where the Spirit descended upon Jesus, He is driven by the Sprit into the wilderness where He and Satan will do battle. Like Elijah, Jesus will spend forty days in the wilderness, living peacefully among wild animals, ministered by angels (1Kings 19:5-8; 17:5-6). This scene replicates Eden, where Adam, the first man, lived peacefully among the wild beasts, but where Satan, an angel, jealous of God’s goodness to man, tempted him to forsake the Father. Like Adam, the Father has announced that Jesus “is my beloved son.” The Spirit casts Jesus into the wilderness, much like Jesus cast out the demons elsewhere in the Gospel. After centuries of plundering man, of having his way with them, Satan will finally meet his match and so, the Spirit, “spoiling for a fight,” throws Jesus into the wilderness where inevitably the two will clash. Here, Jesus emerges, not defeated like the first Adam, but victorious to proclaim the kingdom of God. The battle with Satan continues, reaching its climax in the crucifixion, where seemingly Satan prevails, but he is not victorious. Jesus, raised up on the third day, is the Victor. Satan’s dominion is ended. The kingdom of God has begun and those who wish to enter may do so. Today’s Gospel is also reminiscent of the story of Noah and the flood where Genesis speaks of the terrible disastrous spread of sin. God regrets that He ever created man. Yet in the midst of this terrible situation, Noah finds favor with God and a new covenant is formed, a new start, a new age—God can say in the midst of this myriad of sin, “Let’s begin again.” As with Noah, so with Jesus: a new age has begun, a new beginning. What is important about Lent is new beginning. God does not care how bad you have been or how many times you have started over — God has an infinite ability to start over; don’t look at yourself; look at God’s potential; forget the past; cry out like the leper in Mk 1: 40-41, “If you wish, Lord, you can heal me,” and hear Jesus’ reply, “I do will it.” 1

The Anchor Yale Bible, Mark 1-8, Joel Marcus

PRAYING FOR THE SICK AND DECEASED

Please remember in your prayers, the following people who are seriously ill and others who are suffering with long-term or terminal illnesses:

Please note that if you wish to have a family member or friend’s name included with the petition for the sick which is read at weekend Masses, you must call the parish office by 9 AM on Friday. Your loved one’s name will automatically be added into the sick list in the bulletin the following weekend. If you add a loved one’s name to the petition when you come to Mass, please follow up with a phone call to the parish office on Monday so the name may be included with the sick list in the bulletin. In the interest of keeping our sick list current, the first weekend in March we will remove names put on prior to February 1st, unless we hear from you or a family member that you wish a name to remain on the list. Call the Office, 630-355-1081, to add, remove or keep a name on the sick list. Any names received after 9 AM on Friday will be included in the following weekend’s prayers. Deceased loved ones who are buried from SS. Peter and Paul Parish are automatically named in the bulletin and in the petition read at weekend Masses. Christian Service Happenings In the continuing series of articles on how the parishioners of SSPP support various charities and apostolic works through the parish’s Christian Service Commission (CSC), we turn today to the South African country of Botswana. Through the interest and request of one of SSPP’s parishioners, our parish made a most important contribution to the Lord’s mission. Please read on about the effects of your financial generosity.

St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Gabane, Botswana is a central part of people’s lives in that community and village. Father Johannes Kgaodi is St. Peter’s Pastor, and one of that parish’s young men was recently ordained to the priesthood (Dec. 20, 2014). St. Peter’s belongs to the Goborone Diocese of Botswana which encompasses the greater part of the southern half of that country. That diocese includes many rural towns and villages within its boundaries. Though St. Peter’s is the home parish of the newly ordained Fr. Bonang Vincent Seiso, his future assignments will most probably include bringing the Gospel to many of those rural communities. To do that effectively, it was suggested by the sister of a SSPP parishioner, whose sister has been a St. Peter’s parishioner in Botswana for many years, that a portable Mass kit would be most helpful and needed for those duties. Through a generous grant from the CSC’s budget, this young priest will be helped to reach his goal of bringing the Lord’s message to those in his care in those many villages. Your regular generous donations on Sunday covered the cost of that Mass kit which included items needed such as a crucifix, candles, chalice, cruets, altar linen, pyx, stole, aspergillum (holy water sprinkler), and some other necessary items to celebrate Mass and the sacraments. The kit was presented to Fr. Seiso by his home parish, St. Peter’s, upon his ordination. That would not have happened without the generous support of the members of Ss. Peter and Paul Parish here in Naperville. On behalf of St. Peter’s in Botswana and Fr. Seiso, we thank you for your ongoing Sunday financial donations, which brought this international gift to a young priest working in the true spirit of the Apostles in a rural missionary setting.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY In today’s Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to wealth, power and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Have you considered answering the call to serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Please continue to help us by placing a donation in a green envelope found at the side and rear entrances of the church and chapel. We may be contacted by calling 630-355-1081. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering personto-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul.

We need volunteers to help At Community Nursing and Rehab Every Thursday, Holy Communion is brought to the residents of Community Nursing and Rehab. With a team of three people, a Communion Service and Rosary is said, and volunteers distribute Holy Communion to all who are Catholic. A commitment of just once a month is all that asked. If interested or would like more information, please call Paulette at 630-718-2127.

WANT TO HELP DO GOD’S WORK? St. Thomas Parish is sponsoring another medical mission to Haiti on April 28 this year. A team is scheduled to leave that day for one week and needs some volunteers: Doctors, PA’S, NPA’S, RNS or Resp. Therapist in addition to 3 support staff (no medical experience needed). This is the tenth straight year of Christian service to some of the neediest and kindest people on earth. If you would like to help in any way, please contact Timothy J. Tyrrell, MD at [email protected].
