On Easter morning churches everywhere will be filled. Lilies will adorn the sanctuary. Trumpets and choirs will sound the message that “Jesus Christ is Risen Today”. Children will hunt for colored eggs and chocolate bunnies will fill their baskets. Pastors will read the story of the empty tomb and preach about the resurrection and then people will go home and the world will continue to turn as it always has. What many will fail to recognize is the impact this had in the creation of the church. Early disciples saw as much more that resuscitation. This was not cosmic CPR to revive a dying body. Rather the resurrection instituted a new way of looking at life and faith. The resurrection of Jesus Christ was so central to the formation of the Christian faith that the Apostle Paul wrote, “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” He believed our relationship with God stands on that moment when sin and death were defeated and victory of life and hope emerged from an empty tomb. So, let us prepare for this celebration with Easter Food Baskets for those in need and Easter Egg hunts for children looking for fun. Make time for Palm Sunday worship where we will receive as new members a larger number of our young disciples and those even younger who will wave palm branches. On Maundy Thursday and Good Friday we mark the events that led to the cross and the promise that follows with the resurrection on East Sunday.

• NOAH LUNCHEON Welcome – All retirees are invited to attend the monthly luncheon at 12:30, April 13th, in the Fellowship Hall. It is important to make reservations by April 9th, by calling Donna Becker.

Program: Roger Heller is a native of Adams County, PA. Growing up near the Gettysburg Battlefield resulted in an interest in American History that has never gone away. After graduating from West Chester University with a Master’s degree, Roger taught History (especially American) in a Chester County High School for the next 30 years where he helped create interdisciplinary approaches to teaching History and Literature and piloted the AP American History course. After retirement, Roger moved back to Gettysburg and lives with his wife within 2 miles of the Battlefield. He volunteers his time at the Adams County Historical Society as a researcher. It is at ACHS that this program was born. The American Civil War is the centerpiece of American History. Many thousands of books have been written about its many facets, and that study continues. Recently, the focus of research in the Civil War has changed from military events to the study of common people who lived with the horror of war and how they met the challenges presented to them. Not all Americans were equally enthusiastic about participating in the war. Some of those people were motivated by their religion. Many Pennsylvanians used their religious beliefs in pacifism to avoid service. These conscientious objectors are the subject of Roger’s talk. Menu: Sloppy Joe’s/rolls, potato salad, mixed vegetables, chocolate cake with peanut butter icing

• EASTMINSTER CARES EASTER FOOD BOXES FOR NEEDY FAMILIES

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING (OGHS)

We are again asking that you purchase food items requested on the “food baskets” posted on the Narthex window. We are planning to provide food for 14 families, of which 12 families are from the Bell Family Shelter Bridge Program. Please bring these items back by Thurs., April 6th so we can pack the boxes on Sat., April 8th, starting at 8AM. In lieu of food, we also appreciate cash donations in order to offset the cost of the perishables that we purchase for the food boxes. You can use the pew envelopes and mark your donations for “mission food boxes”. We also need a few volunteers to help the youth pack the boxes and load the van.

OGHS is the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together to work for a better world. OGHS makes a difference through 3 impactful programs:

BROWNIE BAKER REMINDER Brownies (with no nuts) are due by Wednesday, April 5th, or by 10 AM Thursday, April 6th, at the latest. We leave the church by 10:30AM to deliver them to Our Daily Bread soup kitchen. Thank you for being so faithful in this ministry.

John Henty, Missions

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) which helps alongside communities as they recover from devastation of natural or human-caused disasters. PDA provides aid nationally in such disasters as flooding in So. Carolina which experienced a 1,000 yr. flood that closed 400 roads, 150 bridges, and 2 inter state highways. PDA opened 5 new volunteer villages that housed more than 2,500 volunteers in the cleanup and rebuilding. Superstorm Sandy- ongoing response in NY and New Jersey. More than 9,600 people have volunteered their time and efforts. On an international basis, PDA has been active in such places as S. Sudan, earthquakes in Ecuador, drought in Malawi, humanitarian response to the refugee and food crisis in Syria and neighboring countries and many other crisis. Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) This program takes action to alleviate hunger and the systemic causes of poverty so all can be fed. More than 308,000 people who were living in extreme poverty and more than 30 countries now have increased food security and livelihoods and stronger leadership. In the USA, 65 grant partners have impacted local and national change in maintaining effective safety nets, addressing issues for the working poor and developing robust alternative food systems that address rural and urban poverty in sustainable ways. PHP often partners with other major hunger programs to leverage the funds that they have. PHP helps promote fair trade products- predominately coffee- to increase farmer’s income in 40 cooperatives. If you have a special charity to which you would like your donation to go to, please don’t hesitate to specify where you would like the money to go. It doesn’t necessarily have to go to a charity we have identified in our budget. We will honor your request and give donation “credit” to you.

• CONGREGATIONAL LIFE COMMITTEE NOAH LUNCHEON

SECOND JOURNEY

The Noah Luncheons have been enjoyed by many of our “young at heart” members for many years now under the direction of Shirley Parker and Jo Watson. These ladies along with their program and kitchen support group have done such a wonderful job and the luncheons have been enjoyed by all. We would like to recognize Shirley Parker and Jo Watson for the outstanding work they have done. All good things have to come to an end and Shirley Parker feels it is time for her to step down. Along with the change in leadership, it has been decided to hold the luncheons 4 times a year - October, December, March and May, rather than every month. With the changing of the guard, we are in search of a new coordinator to join the group. Please know if you have any interest in becoming the Noah coordinator, the outstanding staff is still in place with Shirley’s recipes. We even have our own Linda Krom who has graciously purchased the food items to be prepared and plans to continue in this capacity. Programs will also be planned. We just need someone to be in charge. If anyone of you have a desire to take this position, please call Jan Trattner or Jo Watson and we will be glad to answer any questions you would have.

We would like to reach out to all members of Eastminster who are single through the loss of a loved one or just alone to attend breakfast the last Wednesday of every month at the Village Green Restaurant at 9:00 on Eastern Boulevard. We enjoy some wonderful fellowship along with some good food. If you think you would like to join the group, give a call to Doris Ward who plans the event. Jan Trattner , CLC

• DEACONS DEACONS MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT FUND

SERVING OTHERS

Each year during the Season of Lent it is our privilege to remind the congregation of the Deacon’s Memorial Endowment Fund, which begun in 1985, and has grown significantly since. This fund was established to be an endowment fund, of which only the interest is used.

“The Deacons invite everyone to join them at the Annual Deacons Care Luncheon April 9 immediately following the 11:00 worship service. Along with a light lunch served by your Deacons, our newest church members will be recognized. For planning purposes reservations are appreciated.

The interest is used to supplement the general Deacons funds, to help primarily the needs of congregation members, individuals in York County, and York County Agencies whose work is with the needy of York County. A stipulation at the outset of the fund is that we inform the congregation of this opportunity each year during Lent, so that families may consider contributing to it as a suitable memorial or simply a means to offer help to those in need. We do hope that you will consider this to be a gift that goes on giving, year after year.

Please complete a reservation form or email [email protected]. See you there!”

• THOSE WE HAVE REMEMBERED IN PRAYER LAST MONTH The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:5-7 (RSV)

• FACILITIES MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE ARE WE HAVING FUN YET? Work was done on the sanctuary floor tile replacement project completing the areas under the pews and in the chancel, organ pit and Deacons’ Room. Due to the storm, issues with the snow blower and tractor, the schedule had to be reworked, but it is wonderful to have beautiful new floors in our sanctuary? Your FMC volunteers logged 81 hours this past month, completing various tasks and projects on our campus. Help was given for NOAH, Matter of Balance, and Margaret Myers’ funeral luncheon. The new light fixture at the south bridge was installed and time was given for indoor painting. We passed the PA Health Dept. inspection of our kitchen, but were told that an automatic door closure had to be installed on the family/lavatory in Fellowship Hall. FMC continues to work on organizing the maintenance shed and we have identified all buildings, structures and specific rooms/areas of EPC and will be sharing that information with you next month. This will help coordinate all areas of our church facility. We will be assisting the upcoming P.W. Book Sale. Now we welcome your assistance. The date for spring clean-up is Saturday, April 1st. We will begin at 8 A.M. in Fellowship Hall with coffee and then proceed to take on the many “to do” items on our list. Come to Fellowship Hall anytime during the morning for a break and refreshments. We will end the day with lunch at noon, also in Fellowship Hall. Please put the date on your calendar and plan to join us for whatever time your schedule allows for you to help us. The rain date will be Saturday, April 22nd. Your FMC volunteers will be working with the Christian Education Committee on the Easter Egg Hunt with set-up, clean-up and traffic control. We wish our church family and friends a Blessed Easter as we celebrate the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Dee Hoyt, FMC Elder

• SPRING YARD SALE The EPC spring yard sale will be held on Saturday, May 13th, from 8AM to 2PM. Spaces will be available at $15 payable in advance. Don’t want to have your own space, donate your items to FMC to sell at their table. Drop off times for donated items will be Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday before the sale from 3PM to 7PM in the Multi-purpose room of the Haines Administrative Center. Also, a chicken BBQ, a PW bake sale, donuts, hot dogs and beverages will be available. Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit FMC and their many projects. To reserve a space or for more information, call Dave Lewis.

PEW POINTS

• MUSIC MINISTRY A TIME FOR SINGING I recently attended the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), along with about 5,000 other choral directors, at the enormous Convention Center in Minneapolis. During the five days I was there, I heard more than thirty choral groups ranging from children’s, middle school, high school, community, college, university, jazz, barbershop, church and professional choirs. What a joy it was to wake up each morning and know that I was going to be able to listen to excellent choirs sing throughout the day! While several of the choirs proved to be exceptionally outstanding, especially the beautifully crafted programs presented by the Atlanta Master Chorale (Georgia) directed by Eric Nelson and the Mt. San Antonio College Choir (California) directed by Bruce Rogers, one of the most memorable events of the week was the “Music in Worship Service” at Westminster Presbyterian Church, featuring spirituals sung by the Keystone State Boychoir (Pennsylvania) directed by Steven Fisher, and beautiful anthems by the National Lutheran Choir (Minnesota) directed by David Cherwein. We were inspired by a message from revered veteran choral conductor Eph Ely along with composer/arranger Mark Hayes who led us in singing the hymns we all know by heart. We sang “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace” and many others and rejoiced in the power that singing hymns together can have in bringing us all together and deepening our faith.

The Conference began on Tuesday evening with a “sing-a-long” in the auditorium of the Conference Center led by Garrison Keilor, the long-time host of NPR’s “Prairie Home Companion”. He took the microphone in hand and wandered around the auditorium asking us to join him in whatever song came to his mind (everything from “Precious Lord” to “Home, Home on the Range” to “America the Beautiful”) while commenting on whatever came to his mind. I wish you could have heard all 3,000 of us choral directors bursting into spontaneous 4-part harmony for all of the songs that he threw at us. It was so much fun!! The conference ended on Saturday evening with the performance of the ACDA High School Honors Choir in Orchestra Hall. 300 young singers and the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra performed works by Eric Whitacre, conducted by the composer. It was a wonderful performance that highlighted the talent, artistry and energy of the high school singers, and it was obviously a life-changing experience for them. Although it was frightfully cold and windy in Minneapolis (wind chill consistently at or below zero), their extensive system of elevated, enclosed walkways made it possible to move from building to building while rarely going outside, so, aside from feeling like mice in a maze, we were comfortable and warmly welcomed to the city. I am grateful to Eastminster for your support of continuing education as a member of ACDA!

• HISTORIAN A LOOK BACK IN TIME…60 YEARS AGO - 1957 Over the next few months we will revisit a theme from previous years. We will look back in time at what was happening in the U.S., the world and at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. In 1957 Americans liked “Ike”. Dwight Eisenhower was inaugurated in January for his second term as President of United States. Eisenhower had soundly defeated challenger, Adlai Stevenson, in the 1956 election. The average annual wage of an American worker was $4,550. The average cost of a new home was $12,220. A new car cost $2,750 with approximately 2/3 of all new cars bought on credit. The iconic ’57 Chevy debuted in three series models. A gallon of gas cost 24 cents. A popular item among young people was the new Wham-O Flying Saucer known as the “Frisbee”. Hurricane Audrey hit Louisiana and Texas in August of 1957. The cost was over $100 million in damages and over 500 lives lost. The Philadelphia based dance show, “American Bandstand” made its network debut on ABC in August. In September, the “Little Rock Nine” attempted to begin classes at Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas. The group of nine African American students were to be integrated into a formerly all-white school. Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus ordered the National Guard to block entrance to the students. President Eisenhower soon sent Federal troops to escort the students to enter the school. A few of the top grossing films of 1957 were The Bridge on the River Kwai, Peyton Place and Old Yeller. Around the World in 80 Days won the 1957 Oscar for Best Picture. Yul Brynner won Best Actor for his role in The King and I. Some of the top songs in 1957 included All Shook Up and Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley, Love Letters In the Sand by Pat Boone and Little Darlin’ by the Diamonds. The top TV shows of the year included Gunsmoke, The Danny Thomas Show and Tales of Wells Fargo. In children’s literature, The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss made its debut. In the world of sports, Jackie Robinson retired from baseball in January. The Detroit Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns for the NFL Championship (pre-Super Bowl era). North Carolina defeated Kansas (led by Wilt Chamberlain) to claim the College Basketball Championship. The Milwaukee Braves defeated the New York Yankees in the World Series. In October, Brooklyn Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley announced his intentions to move the team to Los Angeles. Althea Gibson, who was the first African American to win the Wimbledon Singles title, was named the AP Female Athlete of the Year. Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox was the AP Male Athlete of the Year. East York experienced tremendous population growth in the 1950’s as a result of Post-World War II prosperity, the additions of baby boomers to young families and movement from cities, small towns and rural areas to newly formed suburbs. In 1956 both Donegal Presbytery and First Presbyterian Church in the City of York had shared ideas of the need for a new church to serve this growing area. Approval for a new church was granted by the Donegal Presbytery, Council of Churches and Board of National Missions. The Reverend Raymond K. Rossnagel was selected to be the organizing minister of the new church, which was not yet in existence. 1957 was the year it all began. The church needed a physical location. Donegal Presbytery zeroed in on the property at 311 Haines Road, owned by Dr. and Mrs. Frank Weaver. The property had once been part of a larger farm owned by Mahlon N. Haines, “The Shoe Wizard”, a prominent York businessman and philanthropist. Haines had the beautiful Georgian style home built in 1922 and lived on the property from 1922 to 1952 when he sold the subdivided property to the Weavers.

The Board of National Missions paid the salary and home rental for Rev. Rossnagel. First Presbyterian Church assisted the Presbytery in the purchase of the property. The Presbytery paid additional expenses. Initially, the future church was known as “The New Presbyterian Church for Eastern York.” On April 28, 1957, a meeting to gauge interest was held at the Rossnagle’s home on East Market Street. Thirty-one people attended. A decision was made to meet again in May with the purpose to organize into working committees. Settlement on the Weaver property was May 15, 1957. The purchase price was $60,000. The decision was made to borrow $70,000 to allow for renovations. Two mortgagee were secured through York Federal and the Board of National Missions with each loaning $35,000. An open house and meeting was held on May 19, 1957. Ninety people attended the open house. The meeting generated a steering committee. The committee made the decision to begin holding Sunday Evening Vesper Services in July and to begin renovations to the property. The garage would be converted into the chapel, the first floor and basement of the home would become classrooms while the second floor would become a family apartment for the Rossnagles. On July 14, 1957, the first Evening Vesper Service was held. The song books were borrowed from First Presbyterian Church and chairs were borrowed from a local funeral home. Rev. Rossnagle led the first worship service and Mrs. Velma Wingerd played a small pump organ (still in the church’s possession). Sixty-two people attended this initial service. By late summer the renovation work was completed. The first regular indoor service was held on September 8, 1957. Attendance was 100 people for worship and 135 for Sunday School. In November, the official “Petition for Charter” was signed by the original 157 charter members. This petition was approved at the November Meeting of the Donegal Presbytery. On December 5, 1957, a congregational meeting was held. The members voted on the name for the church and obviously Eastminster was chosen. The runner up name was “Covenant”. During this meeting the first Session was elected. It included Mr. Rodger Acworth, Mr. John Consley, Mr. George Myers, Mr. Jack Haas, Mr. Wahl Ammerman, Mr. Ross Kurtz, Mr. David McIntosh, Mrs. Rodger Horn and Mrs. Franklin Boogher. A formal call was issued to Rev. Raymond Rossnagel to become the first pastor. On December 8, 1957, a formal organizational service was held for the Eastminster Presbyterian Church. What began as a hope and dream had come to fruition. Keep in mind that at the time of Eastminster’s founding the Donegal Presbytery had not organized a new church in more than fifty years. Neither Rev. Rossnagel nor any of the original committee members had any experience in setting up a new church. In 1967, Rev. Rossnagel wrote the following words as the congregation celebrated its 10th anniversary: “In most every way we have exceeded all expectations. Two factors have played the major part. One, the on-going blessings of our God through Jesus Christ; and two, the dedicated hard work of many hundreds of members.” Bob Moore, Church Historian

This fundraising project concludes its fourth year this month. FMC thanks you for helping to fund projects and items outside their annual budget. We will share the amazing total with you next month, but let’s make the final order of the fourth year a record breaker! Cards will be available for pick-up and payment on Sunday, April 2nd, after each service in the Multipurpose Room. We always have extra cards if you may not have ordered them. To make it easier for you, we maintain a list of “standing orders” for people who automatically want to order the same amount of cards each month. We also have folks who arrange for payment to be made directly from their bank account. You may also pay for your cards before April 2nd if you know that you will not be at church on the first Sunday. We are happy to report that our March sales totaled $11,675.00, which means $583.75 went to FMC. Thank you and Happy Easter! Miriam Circle thanks all of you for your continued support!

• NEW WEB SITE Have you heard? As of February 15th, Eastminster has a new website! The decision was made to have a new site created when we learned that it was not possible to update the original website. Flexibility and ease-of-use were among the prime criteria for the new site. Walt Oakhem, York Computer Repair, was hired to create this “new view” of Eastminster. Although the site’s address is the same, the experience is informative and easy to access. Take a few minutes and check out some of the new features. On the home page you will see current events spotlighted. The current bulletin is right there for you to read if you missed the service or to review dates, times, or other news you might have forgotten. Recordings of Pastor Seckman’s recent sermons are also available on this page. Click on the four “buttons” on the home page to discover more information about Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
