Delegates will gather in Corpus Christi for Grand Lodge Convention CORPUS CHRISITI – Hermann Sons delegates and their guests will gather in "The Sparkling City by the Sea" May 5-8 for the 46th annual Grand Lodge Convention. The convention's theme is "Our Family Serving Your Family." While in Corpus Christi, the delegates will elect Grand Lodge officers to serve for the next four years, including a new Grand President. The other offices to be filled include the four Grand Vice President positions and the five positions on the Grand Finance Committee. Registration begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, at the Omni Corpus Christi Hotel. That evening a welcoming dinner will be held. The business session will begin Monday morning after breakfast. Following committee meetings, the business session will reconvene that afternoon to hear committee reports.

A Casino Night event is planned for Monday night. Music for dancing will be provided by a Western band. Tuesday's business session will feature the election of the officers and any other unfinished business. The new officers will be installed on Tuesday night at a banquet. If needed, another business session will be held Wednesday morning. Delegates have been asked to bring non-perishable food items and monetary donations that will be collected at the hotel and presented to the Corpus Christi Food Bank. This is being done for Join Hands Day, which is being observed on May 4, the day before the convention begins. During the convention, the Marketing Department will be introducing the "Our Family of Delegates" Campaign.

Top producers honored in Marble Falls MARBLE FALLS – A record 38 agents were honored during the annual Agents’ Awards Banquet Weekend held March 15-17 in Marble Falls. The Saturday night banquet at the Flat Creek Estate was the highlight of a weekend planned for the top-producing agents of 2012 and their guests. The weekend began Friday afternoon with check-in at the Holiday Inn Express in Marble Falls. That evening everyone boarded a bus for the short trip north to the Longhorn Cavern State Park where they enjoyed a buffet meal along with beer and

wine. Those who wished were invited to take the 52 steps down into the Longhorn Cavern where dessert was served. Others enjoyed their dessert in the park’s gift shop. After a buffet breakfast at the hotel the next morning, the agents and their guests were free to explore Marble Falls and the surrounding Hill Country. Some went on a shopping excursion along Main Street in historic downtown while others headed out to view the countryside. That evening everyone boarded buses once again for the trip to the Flat Creek

Estate where they were treated to a wine tasting of some of the estate’s finest wines. While some toured the winery, this year’s first-time club qualifiers joined Grand Vice President-Marketing Buddy Preuss for a sparkling wine toast in the Port Room. Before dinner, Special Representative Marilyn Vogt gave the invocation. After the meal, Grand Vice President Preuss presented the awards to the agents with the help of his staff, Marketing Analyst See AGENTS, Pg. 8

Grand President's Message THanK YoU, Hermann SonS, For 37 wonDerFUL YearS The 46th Grand Lodge Convention is almost here, and at the conclusion of this quadrennial meeting Hermann Sons will have a new Grand President. In this, my final message to our members as your Grand President, I want to share with all members a portion of my written report which the delegates to this convention have received. It was a tremendous honor for me to be elected as Grand President/ CEO by the delegates to the 45th Grand Lodge Convention. Since that time there have been numerous opportunities afforded me as a Grand Lodge officer to represent Sons of Hermann at the various activities of our local lodges, Retirement Home, Youth Camp and schools of dance. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Grand Vice PresidentSecretary/Treasurer Mary Beam, Grand Vice President-Investments Harry Werland, Grand Vice President-Marketing Allan (Buddy) Preuss and Grand Vice President-Fraternal Lee Vogel. Our beloved Order has been very fortunate indeed to benefit from the experience of these four extremely dedicated individuals who always put the interests of Hermann Sons first, and whose expertise in their respective areas of responsibility has proven invaluable to me as Grand President and to our Order over the past four years. Beginning with our founding in 1840, the pioneers of our Order made sure that Sons of Hermann was built on a solid foundation of sound fraternal ideals. The leaders who followed in their footsteps continued to strengthen our basic principles of providing for our members with the addition of more and more benefits over the years. Today we are able to enjoy some of the most wonderful fraternal benefits available anywhere in America. Over these past four years it has been my primary objective to protect and maintain the legacy which our predecessors toiled so diligently to provide for all Hermann Sons members. In spite of the difficult economic conditions of the past four years, the Grand Lodge has been able to support all of the fraternal programs which are now in place and, at the same time, we have met all of our financial obligations to our members through their insurance and annuity contracts. The Executive Committee closely monitors our investments and has taken the necessary steps through our Investment Policy to

ensure that we obtain the highest yields possible from these invested funds and at the same time protect the safety of those assets for all of our members. The financial well-being of the Grand Lodge is sound and to make sure that it remains that way, we will continue consulting with our actuary, bond and equity investment advisors, auditors and the Texas Department of Insurance as well as the American Fraternal Alliance, and we will continue to remain prudent in all financial decisions. As we look to the future, it is with the sound confidence in our financial well-being and with the knowledge that Sons of Hermann has the wherewithal to continue those member benefits which have earned our company the envied reputation nationwide as a true fraternal benefit society which espouses “Traditional Values in a Modern World.” We sincerely believe in our motto of “Friendship, Love and Loyalty” and we are determined to offer competitive life insurance and annuity products and second to none fraternal benefits. I want to thank the Grand Lodge staff, local lodge officers and lodge members for their support and cooperation during the last four years. And special thanks go to my family and my wife Julie, who with their strong support and encouragement, have made it possible for me to serve our beloved Order over the last 37 years. It has been a privilege to represent our members and our Order as your Grand President/CEO, and I thank each of you for your support and confidence! I look forward to the future and serving on the Grand Committee in my new position as Past Grand President. I pledge to do my best to keep Sons of Hermann strong, viable and relevant for generations to come. And finally, I want to close this message by urging all members to continue to “SHARE OUR STORY” and always be “HERMANN SONS PROUD.” Look for opportunities to let others know about Hermann Sons, and remember that our Hermann Sons family will be here to serve your family! In Friendship, Love and Loyalty! Fraternally yours, Stephen R. Prewitt Grand President/CEO

Are expired medications still safe to take? It is 2 a.m. and that cough and stuffy nose you have been battling is still keeping you up. You reach for the nighttime cold relief medicine only to find it expired a few months ago. If you take a dose to ease your symptoms, will you be putting yourself at risk? This situation is a relatively common occurrence. Many medicine cabinets are stocked with over-the-counter drugs as well as prescription medications that may be past their expira-

Medical Notes tion dates. It is a good idea to routinely discard expired medicines, but if you happen to take a drug that has passed its expiration date, you will most likely suffer no ill effects. According to the Harvard Medical School Family Health

Guide, the expiration date on a medicine is not the date when a drug becomes hazardous. Rather, it marks the period of time after which a drug company can no longer guarantee the efficacy of the medication. Since 1979, drug manufacturers selling medications in the United States have been required by the Food and Drug Administration to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date until which the manufacturer can still guarantee full potency

of the drug. Expiration dates also may be a marketing ploy. Francis Flaherty, a retired FDA pharmacist, has said drug manufacturers put expiration dates on products for marketing purposes rather than scientific reasons. It doesn’t make financial sense to a company to have products on the shelves for years. Therefore, most drug manufacturers will not do long-term testing on products to confirm if they will be effective 10 to 15 years after

manufacture. The U.S. military has conducted its own studies with the help of the FDA. FDA researchers tested more than 100 over-thecounter and prescription drugs. Around 90 percent were proven to still be effective long past the expiration date – some for more than 10 years. Drugs that are stored in cool, dark places have a better chance of lasting because the fillers used in the See MEDICAL, Pg. 11

Medical Notes Cont'd. from Pg. 10 product will not separate or start to break down as they might in a warm, humid environment. Storing medicines in the refrigerator can prolong their shelf life. Although a pharmacist cannot legally advise consumers to use medication past an expiration date, most over-the-counter pain relievers and drugs in pill form should still be fine. Certain liquid antibiotics and drugs made up of organic materials can expire faster than others. For those who still want to err on the safe side, routinely clean out medications from cabinets once they expire. However, if an expired medication is taken by mistake, there’s little need to worry about potentially adverse effects.

2013 Chili Cook-off at Home a rousing success

COMFORT – The residents at the Retirement Home extend a great big THANK YOU to everybody who participated in any way to help make the Chili and Bean Cook-off such a rousing success. They are indeed very grateful for those who came to compete in the cook-offs – in spite of the predicted foul weather. A special thank you goes to all the lodges for purchasing tickets for the annual prize drawings. They hope to see even more people come next year to help celebrate the 25th Annual Chili Cook-off and the 20th Annual Bean Cook-off. Guests and visitors who registered since the last report were Rodney and Linda Brown, Andrews; Margaret and Stan Paradowski, Virginia Beach, Virginia; Randy and Karen Locke, Montgomery; K. McDaniel, San Antonio; Ed Habenicht, Bandera; Matt and Janet Howell, Austin (La Vernia Lodge No. 180); Myrt Telken, Comfort; Kathleen Weltch, San Antonio; Helena Campos, Spring Branch; Ken Langley, Center Point; and Chuck Graustein, San Antonio (Pershing Lodge No. 160). March 8-10 were Chili and Beans Cook-off days. Friday night started out with jambalaya, tossed salad and bread sticks for supper followed by dancing in the Rec Room with music provided by Jim

certain to win. Right? Wrong! The guys won third place in the amateur chili competition. But, they are bound and determined to come again next year to try again. Family members of residents Billie DeSalme and Richard Bissex enjoyed a day of fun during the Chili Cook-off while cooking their very own recipes. The teams included William and Lynette DeSalme (Team Chili Willie), Sissi Ormsby and Steven Payton (Team Yahtzee) and Debbie and Jerome Kiolbassa (Camo & Ammo Chili). They did their best and had three good pots of chili but none made it in to the winners' circle. The guys enjoyed listening to the girls exchange memories from their Girl Scout days like putting soap on the pots for easier cleanup and making sure each had a plastic bag tied to a tree to keep the area clean. Dax and Kierstan Gunnink provided free entertainment for children who came to the Chili Cook-Off. Plastic Easter eggs and stickers were available for decorating. Pony beads and T-shirt strips were furnished so participants could make their own jewelry or headbands.

Brandon Saia did a wonderful job helping “Firecracker Sam” sell items from the Scholarship Store. All had a good time and are looking forward to returning for the 2014 celebration. On March 19, Rosie Franklin’s daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Stan Paradowski, her grandsons, Dylan and Travis, and her granddaughter, Melody, came to visit from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Later in the week, Margaret and Stan’s other daughter, Wendy Wheat, and Rosie’s great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Wheat, arrived from Boulder, Colorado. Rosie reports all had a wonderful time. On March 23, residents Joyce Liberato and Harvey Tegtmeyer left on a casual trip to Panama City, Florida, to visit Harvey’s sister Doreen. On the way, they made stops in Houston to see Joyce’s sister-in-law Josephine Somers and family and in Beaumont to see Joyce’s sister Jeanne Rhodes and family. Other stops were in Lake Charles, Biloxi and Pensacola. They reported enjoying all the sights along the way. Monthly chapel service was conducted on March 25. Immanuel Lutheran of Comfort Pastor Shelley Simmont, with resident Al Schroeder assisting, administered Holy Communion. Resident Kathy Bender played the piano for the singing of hymns. On Easter Sunday, Rosie Franklin’s son-in-law and daughter, Scott and Mary Hall, joined Rosie and her granddaughter, Kaysi Anna Craig, to attend church service. After church, they went to Bandera for an Easter meal with Rosie’s daughter and son-in-law, Katy and Ronnie Richards, Mary’s sons, Aaron and Baley, and friends. Rosie reports that the weather turned stormy and they all gave thanks for the blessing of rain.

Adele Boehme

Lauren Hlavaty

Lauren Voigt

Three receive HSYC scholarships COMFORT – Adele Boehme, Lauren Hlavaty and Lauren Voigt are this year’s recipients of the three Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarships! Of the 36 applicants, these winners will each receive $1,000 for their first semesters of college. They each submitted an application, scholastic record, reference letters and an essay about how being a Hermann Sons camper helped shape her. Adele Boehme, daughter of Curtis and Staci Boehme, attends Hondo High School. She plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in business. Amongst other accomplishments, Adele is National Honor Society president, 4-H Club vice president and Student Council parliamentarian. She was named District Defensive Most Valuable Player for her varsity volleyball team and she was on the Homecoming Court. Outside of school, she is a member of her church choir, she participates in highway trash pickup, she is the assistant for a religion class and more. In her essay, she reflected upon the value of meeting new people when she said, “Living in a small town, I have had the same group of friends since elementary school. Before Camp, I never had any desire to meet new people because I thought the friends I had were enough. […] However, little did I know, Hermann Sons Camp would completely change my perspective about meeting people. I slowly emerged from my shell and became comfortable socializing with all the girls that surrounded me, whether it was in archery, swimming, basketball, volleyball, ceramics, recreational games or Adventures in Nature. My new friends enjoyed doing the same things as I and, in turn, we got along perfectly. I met

many different enjoyable people at Camp that I will always remember, including Sarah, Sam and Alexis. They are now my life-long friends and I am thankful that Hermann Sons Youth Camp gave me the opportunity to meet such amazing people.” Lauren Hlavaty, daughter of Brian Hlavaty and Tina Svatek, is from Ganado and attends Ganado High School. She plans to major in business at The University of Texas at Austin. Lauren has been competitive in varsity volleyball, club volleyball, varsity basketball, varsity track and one-act play. She has been active in her community, including volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and vacation bible school. “Experiencing independence from my parents was an expedient way in which Hermann Sons Youth Camp helped mold me into the person I am today. Knowing how to be independent is something every adolescent should learn because eventually the time will come when one must leave the place they call home and live on their own,” wrote Lauren in her essay. Lauren Voigt, daughter of Wendel and Lynne’ Voigt, attends Pflugerville High School. She plans to study biomedical engineering at either Rice University or Texas A&M University. Amongst other accomplishments, Lauren was a counselor-in-training for two years at Hermann Sons Youth Camp. She has received the award for academic excellence in AP Chemistry, AP U.S. History, AP Environmental Science, Pre-AP Biology and Pre-AP World Geography. During her high school years she has been in the marching band, concert band, choir, church youth group, German Club, Key Club, National

Honor Society and other organizations inside and outside of school. Lauren’s full essay is below: "Today when I face a challenge, my hands don’t shake and I no longer feel a great sense of anxiety. My experiences as a camper at Hermann Sons Youth Camp significantly helped me on my road to battle against my nerves in a variety of situations. "When I packed my bags for Camp I added one thing that most campers don’t bring to Camp - my flute. I planned on participating in the Talent Show. But when it came time to actually audition, I was extremely nervous. It was the first time that I would have had to play in front of people who I didn’t know and I was worried about what they would think. I almost didn’t make it to the auditions. It took everything I had to actually walk across the courtyard to where the auditions were being held; I almost turned around. I followed through though! The counselors were extremely nice and supportive of me even though I was a little shaky. Later, I was excited when they posted the results and my name was on the list! "I didn’t start to get nervous again about playing in the Talent Show until I had made the trek up the hill to the Retirement Home and I had started warming up. What if I mess up? What if they don’t like it? These were thoughts that went through my head. When it was time for my act, the adrenaline kicked in and my heart was almost beating out of my chest. But I wanted to do this, so I took a deep breath and walked on to the “stage” with my music stand. I put my music up, placed my flute up to my mouth, took another deep breath and beautifully played the famous “Harry Potter” theme song. Before I knew it, I was done playing See SCHOLARSHIP, Pg. 16

Scholarship recipients share HSYC experiences Cont'd. from Pg. 15 and everyone was clapping. It was such a wonderful feeling that I had performed successfully and gotten over my nerves. "Since then, I have had numerous band and now choir performances. I would say that nerves never really go away, but through my experience as a camper at Hermann Sons Camp I have learned how to successfully deal with my nerves and make them a positive aspect in my performances and my life. When I am asked what my fondest memory as a camper is I without hesitation say my performance playing my flute at the Talent Show at the Retirement Home!

"As I head on to college, I aspire to be in the university band and choir programs. I will take with me my experience that I had many years ago at Camp so that I will never let anything hinder me from my love of performing. Now, when I face a challenge like a difficult exam or a presentation, and my nerves kick in, I take a deep breathe, think of Hermann Sons Camp - relax and face the challenge head on knowing it is all going to be OK. Hermann Sons Camp had a positive impact on my life. It helped me face all of my life challenges with more confidence and I will always cherish and remember my days spent at Camp." The scholarship fund is named for Shannon Leigh Gaffney. Shannon was a past camper and counselor at

Hermann Sons Youth Camp who exemplified the spirit of Camp. Her final summer as a camper, she was chosen by counselors to receive the prestigious Best Camper Award, Camp’s top honor for campers. Shannon lost her battle with leukemia on Dec. 15, 1998, at the age of 21. In tribute to Shannon, her family and Camp administration started the Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship. Her parents, Mike and Cathy, her twin brothers, Michael and Martin, and many of their family and friends continue to support the scholarship fund through fund-raising events and other activities. This fund provides college scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are current Hermann Sons members and past HSYC campers.

Square Dance Club SAN ANTONIO – The Hermann Sons Square Dancers have been out and about. Harold Dillashaw and Katherine Fletcher have been entertaining the children. Harold’s son, Jeffery Lowell from Buffalo, New York, was here for a week. Upon his exit, Katherine’s daughter, Sandra, came home for a twoweek break from medical school. While home she celebrated her 30th birthday with family and friends. Gene Jensen is also glad to

be home after 14 days in the hospital. He somehow managed to get his bicycle on a collision course with an SUV on March 26. He was diagnosed with eight broken ribs, damage to his left hip socket and left kidney plus a whack on the head along with badly skinned elbows. He took the option to come home two days later, which was a bad idea because after a few hours at home he was back at the ER, where they found he had a punctured/collapsed lung and a much slower recovery pattern.

Ten days of painful treatments later, he was able to start preparing to come home. He is home now, walking gingerly and without restrictions as long as he can stand the pain. He appreciates the cards and calls and help from Sami while he has been indisposed. He and Sami are currently counting their blessings that the episode was not worse than it was. The bicycle and equipment are replaceable and repairable and Gene hopes to be out riding before too long.

Betty Mettke is also in recovery. On April 8, she underwent a complete hip replacement. The doctors report that they are pleased with the outcome and have scheduled her to go into rehab for a couple of weeks. She was not too thrilled to hear about the rehab until she found out that she would be going to Air Force Village, the same facility where her friend and fellow dancer Bill Reichert is going through rehab. Keep them both in your prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

Hermann Sons welcomes two new members, Dan Clark and Dee Pollock. The club sends a “thank you” to Cris Crisler for filling in for Bill on April 5. Bill is still combating allergies. Hope you win Bill. Celebrating May birthdays are Henry Saenz, Gene Jensen, Yvonne Whitney and Wayne Sgambati. Mary and Leon Weinstrom will celebrate their wedding anniversary in May. – Reporter

Celebrating March birthdays at the Houston Lodge meeting were, from left, James Ellison, Emily Falkenberg and Gary Falkenberg.

HOUSTON – Well, not only do we have lots of April showers that should be followed by May flowers, we have winter back again. Just hang around, it will change. The next important thing for Houston Lodge No. 100 is the Join Hands Day project. Pat Bushman is heading this up. She has arranged for lodge members to work a four-hour shift at the Houston Food Bank. It is located at 535 Portwall St. It is off I-10 East and Gellhorn. You are requested to wear long pants and closed toe shoes. Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. If you have any questions or need bet-

ter directions, get in touch with Sister Bushman at 713-3983209. This is the first time the lodge has taken on a project like this so let’s have a good turnout. The Grand Lodge Convention is just a few weeks away and those planning to attend are looking forward to seeing old friends and conducting the business of our Order. Attendance at meetings continues to grow, so keep on coming. Remember that the lodge’s goal this year is 10 NEW members. While transfers are always welcome, President (and Agent) Gary Falkenberg needs help if the lodge is to reach that goal.

Give him a call if you have questions. Speedy get-well wishes go to Louise Jacob. She has a stress fracture in her leg and is having to use a wheelchair. Understand it will be for several months. Members mourn the passing of Nell Lungwitz earlier in the month. The lodge recently sent out cards showing all the activities the lodge will have through the end of the year. If you did not get one, give Doris Falkenberg a call (713-466-6069). This card is especially helpful in remembering when special events are coming up. For example, at the

May 13 meeting, there will be a change in food. Everyone is asked to bring sandwiches and, of course, a few desserts will be needed. The June 10 meeting will, once again, be potluck. President Falkenberg has started commemorating Flag Day. So, please come out and join in. Before I close, I have to mention the Retirement Home. There will be a meeting of the Retirement Home Committee in a couple of weeks and I’m anxious to see what changes the residents have made since December. Don’t forget – give the Home a visit, you will always be welcome. – J. Dueitt

Columbia will meet again May 5 DALLAS – Spring greetings from north Texas. Lots of big doings are going on at the Hall these days so there is much to report. Let's start back in Comfort at the Retirement Home Chili Cook-off. Approximately 20 folks from Columbia Lodge No. 66 made the trek to the Hill Country to enjoy the festivities at the Chili Cook-off. Although nobody from Columbia Lodge won they certainly had fun making and eating chili all weekend. The singing and playing contingent did receive the Showmanship Award for the amateur cooking teams. There was lots of socializing and Friendship, Love and Loyalty amongst all the Sons of Hermann members from all the lodges who attended the cookoff. Thanks go to the Retirement Home staff for putting up with the shenanigans and hope to see everybody again next year. All members need to take a trip to Comfort to see the Youth Camp and Retirement Home. Back in Dallas, the next week

a general meeting was held at the Hall and some issues were presented and voted on by a quorum of members. Congratulations go to Dave Lewis, Stanley Whitehead and Gilbert Shelby for doing such a fine job in getting the word out to all 800-plus members. The time spent in contacting members made all the difference. Columbia Lodge held its last annual Saint Alphonso Pancake Breakfast in conjunction with a blood drive at the Hall during the weekend of the Deep Elm Arts Fest. Although the crowds were smaller this year, the lodge still managed to make a profit and feed the beloved Church Kids the following morning. Thanks go to all those who helped in the kitchen, the usual suspects being Bobby and Juliea Wilbanks, Melody Carroll and Mrs. Butterworth. Tony Kellor passed away in February and his last wish was to have his ashes spread out in the places he loved. To that end, a ceremony was held at

the Hall on April 13 and before the Red Elvises hit the stage, a small part of Tony was placed on the dance floor, a moment of silence was observed and everyone danced with Tony one last time. It was quite emotional and very fitting that a party was held in his honor. The scene was not unlike many of the dances held back about 20 years ago when the Volunteer Fire Ants would have everyone rocking with delight. Everyone at the Hall would like to see more people at the Hall and invite others to volunteer and make it a nicer place. There will be some Saturday work at the Hall and all are invited to come scrape some old paint and prepare the building for its new coat of paint. The Historical Committee is planning on a new vote to secure a color combination that is pleasing and appealing to everybody.
