Creating A Tapestry Through Community by Launda Carroll, President/CEO
Corporate Board of Directors
“We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone…whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one’s life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something.” Sandra Day O’Connor, retired Supreme Court Justice Here at Innovative Services NW, we have been given the opportunity to see tapestries being created every day; individual threads of the lives and gifts of our clients, staff, partners, donors, and volunteers being woven together to create something so much more powerful and beautiful than any one of these could accomplish on their own. In our Childcare and Preschool classrooms we see kids of all ability levels working, playing, and learning together. What a wonderful tapestry is being created by little hands and voices as they connect and interact with one another. It is a picture of acceptance and the joy of sharing.

In our Pediatric Therapy Center and Community Preschool, we see volunteers from the Assistance League of Southwest Washington come to the Center to provide one-on-one assistance to children who have special needs as well as provide encouragement to both staff and families. It is a picture of compassion and giving of oneself to others. On any given workday, we can see relationships being developed between adults with disabilities and their employers and co-workers that deeply impact their lives. It is a picture of the value of contribution at all ability levels.

Throughout this newsletter, you will see many different examples of community and why it is such an essential core value of Innovative Services NW. Yet it is a core value that we cannot achieve on our own—we are dependent on the very community we value to come alongside in order create a tapestry that is woven with the beautiful threads of encouragement, support, diversity, value, and acceptance. We believe in the words of author, Marianne Williamson, “In every community there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart there is the power to do it.” Innovative Services NW 9414 NE Fourth Plain Road Vancouver, WA 98662 (360) 892-5142

During our weekly intergenerational activities between Childcare and the Adult Day Health Center, we see the interweaving of lives as many volunteers share their gifts of music, art, gardening, and friendship with both the children and aging adults in our community. It is a picture of the value of life at any age. At the monthly meetings of either our corporate board of directors or our four advisory boards, we see over 50 community professionals, parents, and advocates providing the guidance and oversight to ensure that our services are delivered effectively and in a community-supported environment. It is a picture of commitment and making our community a great place for all its citizens.

Innovative Services NW Fast Facts
W
ho Are We?: Innovative Services NW is a nonprofit organization that values, assists, and supports children, adults, and families in our community who have disabilities or other disadvantages. We do this through offering a continuum of services including therapy, preschool and childcare for children; employment training and job support for teens and adults; adult day health services for seniors and adults with disabilities; and intervention, education, and support for families. Client Population:
Service Facts:
• Serve over 750 children, adults and families on a weekly basis • 85% of children in our childcare program come from low income families • 70% of children receiving therapy services are on Medicaid • 90% of adults served are on Social Security Income or other types of subsidy
• 46 years in operation, serving Clark County • Largest pediatric therapy clinic in Clark County • Largest custodial service provider in Clark County outside of a national janitorial chain; almost 5 million square feet cleaned on a weekly basis • Contract with all Clark County School Districts to provide early intervention services
Partnerships: Innovative Services NW’s approach to addressing community needs is one of collaboration. We have always partnered with families, physicians, and other health care and educational professionals to meet the individual needs of each client and their family. Community collaboration has been an intricate part of our programs, both through direct service and through our involvement on numerous community interagency committees.
Volunteers: • The Innovative Services NW Board of Directors is made up of 12 community members who volunteer an average of 4 to 6 hours of their time each month to program oversight and policy. One board member volunteers additional hours as liaison to the Innovative Youth and Family Services Advisory Board. Three board members volunteer additional hours to the Development Advisory Board. Each of these two advisory boards, themselves made up of 5-10 parents and community volunteers on each, volunteer an average of 6 to 8 hours of their time each month. • Innovative Services NW utilizes 20-40 hours of internship hours from Clark College and Washington State University (WSU) interns for the Family Support Programs on a weekly basis. Therapy interns from 13 different colleges and universities across the United States receive needed hands-on training for their coursework, but also provide donated time to enhance services for our therapy clients. • Community organizations, such as The Assistance League of SW Washington and the Clark County Newcomers Club, donate hundreds of hours annually to our different programs. Safeway employees volunteer hundreds of hours each year in support of our Care Cup Golf Tournament that raises thousands of dollars annually for Innovative Services NW programs and services. • Volunteers from local high schools, churches, and businesses donate time for on-site projects and fundraising events.
Our Mission: Guided by parents and medical, educational, social services and business professionals, Innovative Services NW provides quality therapeutic and child care services to children; job-skills training and support to individuals with disabilities/ disadvantages and their families; and crisis intervention, respite care, and support services to families.
