CASEY FAMILY HISTORY This book focuses on the descendants of the author’s oldest proven Casey ancestor, Ambler Casey (born 1790) who married Polly Ellison. The authors have also started the research of their related lines of the Casey family and short sections are also included on these lines: Woodward and Ellison. In 1980, the authors published their first family history, "Casey Family History," which is now out of print. This book included over 600 descendants of Ambler Casey and also included material reviewing several preceding generations that have circulated in the unpublished manuscript written by George and Abner Casey in 1964. Since the 1980 publication, the authors have eliminated this earlier material as it has been determined to be unrelable information. In its place, the authors have now compiled several thousand other Casey individuals that could be related to the authors. The first edition of “Casey Family History” is no longer available for sale and the last copies were sold in later part of 1994. This book was 8 1/2 x 11 inches, contained 195 pages, had a hardback cover, included over 800 entries in the index and six photographs. This book also included research on the immigrant Abner Casey as well as the 1876 manuscript by Lewis F. Casey and the Casey sketch by William H. Perrin published in 1883 (not included in this electronic second edition). The book contains early research on Virginia, South Carolina and Tennessee (not included in this electronic second edition). These sections have been replaced by Casey research more closely related to the authors, Casey families of Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri and includes an expanded version of the descendants of Jesse E. Casey (born 1797) who probably is related to the authors; a new version of Abner Casey (born 1786) which covers the majority of the Arkansas Casey families included in the 1964 “Casey History” by George and Abner Casey (never published); and new sections on Anthony Casey (born 1805), John Casey (born 1782), Henson Casey (born 1834) and James Casey (born 1795).

INTRODUCTION

This book is the second edition of “Casey Family History” and will not be published in book form for at least another five to ten years, if ever. The second edition of this book was compiled by Robert Casey from information primarily obtained by Robert’s father, Harold Casey. Although Harold Casey died on January 8, 1991, this book will continue to use his name as one of the authors because of his significant contribution to this project. The second edition of this book is dedicated to Harold Casey, one of the best fathers that anyone could ask for and one of the most active Casey researchers who will be missed by many, specially by his son, Robert. This is the second edition of “Casey Family History” and the authors will continue to compile additional information as it becomes available. It is highly recommended that anyone wishing to preserve their Casey family history write and contribute any information in their possession. We are specially interested in copies of older photographs, family history recorded in Family Bibles, existing family history sketches, genealogical correspondence which contains a significant quantity of information, letters and diaries written prior to 1900, older legal documents, census records as well as recent additions to your families.

STEVENSON, ARRINGTON AND TUCKER FAMILEIS This book focuses on the descendants of the authors oldest proven Stevenson, Arrington and Tucker ancestors. These lines are related to the authors Casey line. This book is one of the few lines of the authors where the immigrant ancestors has been established. James Stevenson, the oldest known Stevenson ancestor of the authors, was born around 1720 in North Belfast, Ireland and raised most of his family in Maryland. Almost all of his children moved to central North Carolina with many descendants residing in present day Alexander County, North Carolina. James Stevenson had a daughter, Mary Stevenson (born 1766 in Maryland), who married the author's oldest known Arrington ancestor, John Arrington. John was born around 1761 in London, England and married Mary Stevenson in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1783. John and Mary Stevenson had a son, John Arrington, II (born 1792, North Carolina) who had a daughter, Lucinda Arrington (born 1815, North Carolina). Lucinda Arrington married the author's oldest known Tucker ancestor, John A. Tucker (born around 1809 in either Tennessee or Kentucky). John and Lucinda Tucker had a daughter, Annette Tucker (norn 1861 in Madison County, Arkansas), that married into to the author's Casey line. Annette Tucker married James Alfred Casey. Two other sisters of Annette Tucker also married relatives of James Alfred Casey (an uncle and a cousin). This is the first edition of this book and was compiled by Robert Casey and Robert's father, Harold Casey. Although Harold Casey died on January 8, 1991, this book will continue to use his name as one of the authors because of his significant contribution to this project. It is highly recommended that anyone wishing to preserve their Stevenson, Arrington and Tucker family history, write and contribute any information in their possession. We are specially interested in copies of older photographs, family history recorded in Family Bibles, existing family history sketches, genealogical correspondence which contains a significant quantity of information, letters and diaries written prior to 1900, older legal documents, census records as well as recent additions to your families.

INTRODUCTION

SHELTON, WININGER AND PACE FAMILIES Louis Bertie Casey married Florence Larue Shelton which establishes the authors’ Shelton line. Florence is the mother of the co-author, Harold Casey, and is the grandmother of the co-author, Robert Casey. In fact, the authors have two Shelton lines because Florence’s parents were first cousins. Florence’s father was William Martin Shelton, son of Nathaniel Shelton and Mahala (Harper) Shelton. Florence’s mother was Martha Adeline Shelton, daughter of William Shelton and Martha (Pace) Shelton. Both Nathaniel Shelton and William Shelton were sons of John Shelton, the author’s oldest proven Shelton ancestor. Other ancestral lines that married into this Shelton line include: Harper, Pace, Wininger and Messer. In 1988, the authors published a book on these lines which was titled “Shelton, Wininger and Pace Families.” The book “Shelton, Wininger and Pace Families” is still available for sale from the authors. This 864 page book was the result of ten years of extensive research by two experienced genealogists who have published four family histories. Over 16,300 names are listed in the index, over 110 photographs and illustrations are included and each sketch has references listed. This book is six inches by nine inches, has a high quality hardback cover, uses archival quality paper and was typeset using the lastest desktop publishing technology. This book is still available for $35.00 postage paid. Order from Robert Casey, 4705 Eby Lane, Austin, TX 78731 or Mrs. Harold Casey, 1002 Westwood Drive, Stillwater, OK 74074. John Shelton, Sr. is the oldest proven Shelton ancestor of the authors. John was born around 1780 in Virginia and lived in Hawkins County, Tennessee, Scott County, Virginia and Jackson County, Alabama. John Shelton married Catherine Messer, daughter of Christian Messer and Sally Messer. Over 1,000 Shelton’s are mentioned. The authors decided to include two additional lines (Wininger and Pace) due to the numerous intermarriages between these lines (over 130 intermarriages within these three lines). Just under half of the people included under these three lines are descendants of John Shelton, Sr.

INTRODUCTION

1-7

Andrew Wininger is the oldest proven Wininger ancestor of the authors. David Wininger, Sr. is the only known child of Andrew Wininger and his wife, Polly Wininger. David was born around 1770 in Augusta County, Virginia and lived most of his life in Scott County, Virginia. David’s daughter, Elizabeth Wininger, married William Pace, Jr., son of William Pace, Sr. Over three-quarters of the people included under these three lines are descendants of David Wininger, Sr. Over 900 Wininger’s (and variants of the spelling) are mentioned. William Pace, Sr. is the oldest proven Pace ancestor of the authors. William was born around 1750 in Virginia. William Pace’s son, William Pace, Jr. married Elizabeth Wininger and their daughter, Martha Pace, married John Shelton’s son, William Shelton. Over two-thirds of the people included under these three lines are descendants of William Pace, Sr. Also included are brief sections on other ancestral lines that married into the Shelton line, Harper and Messer. Many of the descendants of John Shelton, David Wininger and William Pace remained in or near Scott County, Virginia and Jackson County, Alabama. Thousands of descendants remained in these two counties and their neighboring counties. Many of their descendants remained in Virginia and Alabama while others migrated to Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Florida and Indiana. Related lines include: Bellamy, Bellomy, Brotherton, Bynum, Casey, Caswell, Cox, Davidson, Davis, Duncan, Evans, Foster, Frazier, Gentle, Gold, Grimm, Hall, Haynes, Hensley, Jones, Latture, Lusk, Manning, McKenzie, Mitchell, Moore, Posey, Potter, Rogers, Sandidge, Sellers, Simmons, Sims, Smith, Tate, Taylor, Tinney, Tolbert, Watkins, West, Winegar, Wineinger, Wolfe and Woosley. Since the publication of the book, "Shelton, Pace and Wininger Families," in 1988, several thousand additional individuals have been compiled. Additionally, supporting census records have been added as well. Because of the sheer size of this new book, it was decided to split the book into the three respective major lines that were included. These new books are available only in electronic format until the original book, "Shelton, Pace and Wininger Families," sells out. The new books are: "Shelton Family History," "Pace Family History" and "Wininger Family History."

INTRODUCTION

BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY Alvin Harold Casey married Ethel Bernice Brooks which establishes the author’s Brooks line. Bernice is the wife of the co-author, Harold Casey (now deceased), and is the mother of the co-author, Robert Casey. In 1982, Robert Brooks Casey and his mother, Bernice (Brooks) Casey, published a book on this line which was titled “Brooks Family History.” This 382 page book was a result of six years of extensive research by two experienced genealogists who have now published four family histories. Over 4,500 names are listed in the index, over 50 photographs and illustrations are included and each sketch has references listed. Also included are excerpts from the 1885 diary of Francis Asberry Brooks, a letter from Daniel Baugh Brooks to his father in Georgia written in 1836 only two months prior to his death in the Texas Revolution and several interesting legal documents. This book is eight and one-half inches by eleven inches, has a high quality hardback cover, uses Ph balanced quality paper and was typeset on a laser printer. This book is still available for $30.00 postage paid. Order from Robert Casey, 4705 Eby Lane, Austin, TX 78731 or Bernice (Brooks) Casey, 1002 Westwood Drive, Stillwater, OK 74074. At the time of the 1982 publication, Jordan Brooks was the oldest proven Brooks ancestor of the authors. Jordan was born around 1765 and originated from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, later lived in Edgefield County, South Carolina and died in Talbot County, Georgia. The descendants of Jordan Brooks are very Southern people and primarily lived in Georgia and Texas. Many others lived in Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, New Mexico, California, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Since publication of “Brooks Family History” in 1982, it has been determined that Jordan Brooks (born 1765) is the son of Robert Brooks who died in Mecklenburg County, Virginia in 1806. Most of Robert Brooks’ children followed Jordan Brooks and lived in Edgefield County, South Carolina and include: Baugh, White, Butler, Lambert, Thomas and Jones families.

INTRODUCTION

1-9

Over 100 pages of the 1982 book, “Brooks Family History,” are devoted to Jordan’s son, Williamson Brooks (1800 - 1879) whose descendants settled along a line between Houston and Austin, Texas. Another 100 pages of this book are devoted to Jordan’s son, Isham Brooks (1786 - 1852) whose descendants settled in a line between Atlanta and Columbus, Georgia. Related families that married into this Brooks family include: Adkins, Battley, Boland, Bridges, Cooper, Crew, Daniel, Dimon, Fair, Ferguson, Frazier, Freeman, Gibson, Gilbert, Goolsby, Harvey, Hollingsworth, Kelly, King, Lackey, Lumpkin, Maddox, Massey, Mathis, Mosby, Nelson, Newman, Perkins, Phears, Pipes, Robertson, Shelburne, Slaughter, Smith, Turner, Walker, Waller, Whittington, Worthington and many others. Since the publication of the 1982 book, “Brooks Family History, ” the book has been greatly expanded and includes many descendants of Jordan Brooks' siblings as well as many updates to descendants of Jordan Brooks. It is now estimated that "Brooks Family History" contains 40 % more descendants and has over 6,500 names. It now includes the authors Brooks related line, the Hill family, which adds another 500 names. The book now includes all supporting census records and many new census records have been added since the 1982 publication. The authors do not intend to publish an updated paper based version of "Brooks Family History" for many years, if ever.

INTRODUCTION

BRYAN FAMILY HISTORY “Bryan Family History” focuses on the descendants of the author’s oldest proven Bryan ancestor, John Bryan of Rowan County, North Carolina. It is believed by the authors that there is a high probability that John is the son of Morgan Bryan and Martha (Strode) Bryan. However, definitive proof is still lacking and inclusion the children of Morgan Bryan is beyond the scope on this book. This book heavily concentrates on six grandchildren of John and Sarah Bryan and it is believed that over 90 percent of the descendants included are descendants of these six grandchildren. Almost half of this book concentrates on the Samuel Bryan, Jr., son of Samuel Bryan, grandson of John Bryan. Another quarter of this manuscript concentrates on the descendants of two other grandsons of John Bryan that are sons of Samuel Bryan, Sr., William Park Bryan and James Thomas Bryan. The remaining quarter of this manuscript is divided between two daughters of John Bryan, Jannet (Bryan) Orton and Mary (Bryan) Huey. It is the intention of the authors to eventually publish this book in paper formwithin the next four or five years. It is estimated that over 5,000 descendants of John and Sarah Bryan have been documented to date. The “Bryan Family History” also contains research of the Revere family that resided in Virginia. Related families that married into this Bryan family include: Allen, Bryant, Campbell, Church, Davis, Dyer, Ferguson, Heel, House, Huey, Hughes, Lovelady, Majors, Mobley, Moore, Orton, Prosise, Richmond, Smith, Stephenson, Tate, Teas, Thompson, Williams and Winn.

OLLIFF FAMILY HISTORY This book focuses on the descendants of the author’s oldest proven Olliff ancestor, John Shears Olliff of Bulloch County, Georgia. John’s daughter, Susannah Olliff, married Williamson Brooks, both direct ancestors of the authors. Around 1,500 descendants of Williamson and Susannah Brooks are included in the book “Brooks Family History” published in 1982. Over one-third of this 400 page book is devoted to the descendants of Williamson Brooks and Susannah (Olliff) Brooks. This edition of “Olliff Family History” contains an additional 5,000 descendants of John Shears Olliff not found in “Brooks Family History.” This paper based book, "Olliff Family History," is still available for sale for $25.00 postage paid. Order from Robert Casey, 4705 Eby Lane, Austin, TX 78731 or Bernice (Brooks) Casey, 1002 Westwood Drive, Stillwater, OK 74074. This publication is the second book covering the descendants of John Shears Olliff as a 100 page book was previously published in 1971 and contained around 1,500 descendants. This previous publication, “A History and Genealogy of a Portion of the Olliff Family,” was published by Martin T. Olliff, Jr. of Huntsville, Alabama and has been out of print for many years. This previous book, with the permission of the author, Martin T. Olliff, Jr., has been incorporated into this book. Related families that married into this Olliff family include: Akins, Alderman, Bass, Bowen, Brannen, Cannady, Constable, Floyd, Folsom, Foy, Gornto, Holloway, Jones, Lanier, Mallard, McRae, Mendheim, Mercer, Morse, Parrish, Patrick, Riggs, Robertson, Rowe, Stanford, Treadaway, Turner, Walls, Waters, Weems, Williams and Winskie.

INTRODUCTION

THEDE FAMILY HISTORY Robert Brooks Casey married Diane Marie Thede which establishes the author’s Thede line. Robert and Diane are the authors of the manuscript, “Thede Family History.” This manuscript currently contains around 4,000 individuals. This manuscript also contains descendants of all of the ancestors Diane’s paternal grandfather which are primarily of German and Swiss origin with several ancestors immigrating to United States. At least twelve ancestors of Diane’s paternal grandfather’s lines were born in the United States. The primary lines that are included are: Thede, Aubil, Stubi/Steeby, Gerber/Garver, Schmutz/Smutz and Thomas. Heinrich Thede, the authors oldest known Thede ancestor, came to North America around 1839 and settled in Ontario, Canada. Most of the Thede descendants still reside in Ontario, Canada. Around 1865, Heinrich’s son, John Thede (born 1835 in Germany), married Sophia Holtz (born 1846 in Germany), and then immigrated to Caledonia, Michigan where many Thede descendants still reside. Sophia Holtz, wife of John Thede, immigrated with her parents (names unknown) to Ontario, Canada around 1854. Around 1834, Jacob Aubil, the authors oldest known Aubil ancestor, along with his brothers, sister and father (name unknown), immigrated to United States and this line settled in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Many Aubil descendants still reside in this area. Jacob’s son, John Aubil (born 1844 in Ohio), married Rosa Steeby, moved to Allegan County, Michigan where most of their descendants still reside. Jacob Aubil married Mary Garver (born 1824 in Ohio) after immigrating to United States. The Garver line and its allied lines had resided in United States for several generations. In 1835, Johannes Stubi (later anglicized to John Steeby), immigrated to the United States and settled in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. John Steeby and his wife, Catherine Buehler (born 1813 in Switzerland), were probably married in Switzerland and they probably immigrated to United States shortly after their marriage. Of the Steeby descendants found, most still reside in Ohio and many others currently reside in Michigan.

INTRODUCTION

1 - 13

The Garver (Gerber) line of the authors immigrated to North America much earlier than other lines of the authors. Christian Gerber (later anglicized to Christian Garver), immigrated to the United States around 1730 and first settled in Pennsylvania and later Maryland. Most descendants that have been traced settled in the Tuscarawas County, Ohio area. The author’s Garver line is established by the marriage of Mary Garver (born 1824 in Ohio) to Jacob Aubil (an immigrant from Switzerland). Mary’s father, George Garver (born 1800 in Pennsylvania), married Christina Smutz (born 1805 in Pennsylvania). Christina’s father, Johannes Schmutz (anglicized to John Smutz), immigrated to United States in 1792. John Smutz married after he immigrated to United States to Anna Thomas (born 1774 in Maryland). The Thomas line immigrated to United States around 1718 and settled in Frederick County, Maryland. Therefore, there are thousands of descendants of the Garver, Smutz and Thomas lines that were born in United States. The other ancestors of Diane (Thede) Casey only recently immigrated to the United States. Olga Peterson, Diane’s paternal grandmother, is the daughter of two immigrants from Sweden and there are less than 50 descendants that were born in the United States. Diane’s mother, Eleanor Santelman, is the only daughter of two immigrants from Germany and only five individuals of this line were born in United States (Diane, her mother, her brother and Diane’s two sons). Therefore, other than Diane’s paternal grandfather’s ancestry, most of her cousins live in either Sweden (her maternal grandmother’s line) or Germany (her mother’s lines).

High Level Summary of Geographies Covered Every ancestor of the author were residing in United States prior to 1800 and all lived south of the Mason-Dixon line. Only a few ancestors were known to have been born in Europe and very little is known about them or their ancestors that resided in Europe. The author’s wife was born in Michigan and all of her ancestors were born north of the Mason-Dixon line. Much of her European heritage has been compiled and many of her relatives lived in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and France.

INTRODUCTION

1 - 15

What’s different from traditional family histories: This form of publication contains several enhancements that are normally not included in most paper based books: 1) Ten family history books are included for less than the cost of one paperbased family history book. These ten family history books literally include ten times the number of individuals and yet costs only around half of what one such paper-based book would cost to acquire. By including all ten family histories in one publication, the next edition will include updates to all the family histories, not just the next line being researched. 2) There is much more source information included in this publication. Hundreds of census records have been added to each book. Hundreds of original source documents (probate records, Bible records, deeds, significant genealogical correspondence, and many more) have been added. Most typical family histories either have a lot of individuals with minimal source material or not very many individuals but a lot of interesting source material. 3) The index has been greatly enhanced which allows you to find your relatives much faster. Not only does each book have a full name index but there is a master index that covers all ten family histories. Addtiionally, most of the index entries have been expanded to include birthdate and birthplace when known to the author. 4) For one family history, the table of contents and introduction has been greatly expanded to include descriptions of significant surnames that are covered, geographical regions that are covered and chronologically what is included. The “Olliff Family History” demonstrates many ways that a family history could be enhanced when page count and paper costs are not a limiting factor (only time and creativity are constraints). 5) This electronic genealogical publication not only includes ten family history books but includes an additional book on how this electronic publication was prepared as well as how paper-based books are published. This book includes the costs involved, the technology used, methods used for compiling the family history and all aspects of “how to” publish not only this kind of electronic publication but most other options available to genealogists and family historians. Also, “History of the Family History” is also included with each book which gives the reader insight to how these histories were compiled and the sources used for these family history books. 6) Much of the family history included in this publication was submitted to the author electronically via GEDCOM files from other genealogy packages. These files are also included which greatly expands lines that greatly expands the scope of this publication to include many unrelated lines that have common cousins with the authors. Many cousins that purchase this publication will find information on their other lines that are not even related to the authors but are very important to those cousins purchasing a copy of this publication.

INTRODUCTION

Technology behind the scenes of this publication This electronic publication is primarily based on very economical technology that could be used by many other genealogists. The primary software used was Corel Ventura Publisher and the Adobe Acrobat family of products. The personal computer system used a modest 20/60 Mhz 386 SLC personal computer with a HP IIC scanner and over one gigabyte of disk space used primarily for images. There are five levels of Adobe Acrobat products that were used: 1) The Reader program allows anyone who receives a PDF to view and print the contents of any file generated by the family of products. Cost - free. 2) Acrobat (base) product provides a Windows driver that can be used by most popular word processing programs to generate PDF files. Cost - $150 est. 3) Acrobat Pro provides the “Distiller” product which takes postscript files from desktop publishing software and makes PDF files. Also includes “Exchange” which was not used but allows editing of PDF files for more interactive features. Cost - $300 est. (includes base product as well). 4) Acrobat “Catalog” is a full function every word search-retrieval build package. For larger databases, a search-retrieval program becomes a necessity. Cost. $200 est. 5) Acrobat publication fee. Usage of the search-retrieval software requires “Catalog” on every system or a run-time version for $500 est. per title. The vast majority of genealogists would only require either the base product or the “Pro” version. The “Cataog” and its publication fee would only be necessary for genealogical organization which publishes a large collection on CD-ROM or Internet. Desktop publishing packages have far superior interactive features directly built into the package than their word processing counterparts and are highly reccomended for maximum functionality. Direct addition of PDF commands within DTP files was avoided to allow maximum flexibility for printed copy, CD-ROM version and Internet version. The genealogical organization which publishes a collection of family histories would obviously need much more disk storage than than individual genealogists would require separately. Additionally, a CD-ROM recording drive has been used to produce a prototype of the CD-ROM and is a highly desired acquisition for the organization responsible for publication. A higher resolution scanner and higher resolution laser printer are other desirable components for the publisher. ROOTS III was used to convert the GEDCOM files to Register Reports that include most lines found in the GEDCOM file.

You could add your publication to the next edition Genealogical Information Systems, Inc. is looking for high quality genealogical publcations to add to future editions this electronic publicaton. Refer to the “How To” section of this electronic publication on details of preparing your high quality genealogical publication via the Adobe Acrobat family of products. We are interested in family histories, county histories, quarterlies and other genealogical publications that have been compiled using traditional word processing and desktop publishing programs. Your publication can be added free of charge and publication of your genealogical compilation will incur no expenses as compared to the thousands of dollars required for a paper based publication. We are also including genealogical information that is being produced by genealogical software packages. Just create a GEDCOM file of you entire database, and forward the diskette to Genealogical Information Systems, Inc. Once received, we will add you information to our growing database. Not only will your family history be preserved but it will be widely distributed to many genealogists who may be related to you. Unlike paper based publications, updates to your database can be published on a periodic basis as your discover more about your family history. Genealogical research and publication of paper-based books is a very paper intensive endeavor. Many genealogical researchers have dozens of boxes of research source material, many books and other genealogical periodicals. For those who published high quality hardback books, it is an expensive process and requires a tremondous amount of storage room. Five hundred copies of a two pound book generates 1,000 pounds of paper which most will eventually end up in our land fills. After publication of four family histories, the author of the family histories included in this electronic publication was forced to investigate feasible alternatives to publishing several more books that would require literally several tons of paper to publish with the source information that was desired to be included. Electronic publication is not only the ecoomical way to go for genealogists but is much more ecologically sound as well.
