Trojans hoping for breakout volleyball season

Angie Andersen’s eighth year as Trojan volleyball coach sees her team losing a number of talented players to graduation, but with several important pieces of their lineup returning for what she hopes will be a breakout year. The Trojans have 56 athletes from grades 8-12 on their high school teams, and with the returning experience, Andersen expects a high level of competitiveness as they face a tough schedule

during the coming season. Andersen’s assistant coaches are Tracy Skaja, Doug VanBenthuysen, Michelle Scharpen and Amy Lemke. Student managers are Daniel Turner and Nickalaus Andersen. Coach Andersen is a former Trojan and North Dakota State volleyball player. The Trojans are coming off an 11-17 season. Top returnees include Anna Eaton, a middle blocker and outside

hitter who was all-conference last season, Lexi Johnson, an outside hitter, and Sophie Andersen, a freshman setter in her third year on varsity. Andersen said many of the girls on the team worked hard during the off-season, both in team workouts and with club teams. Among players who competed in national tournaments were Eaton, Johnson, Andersen, MaKenna Frerk, Chloe Davis, Annabelle Daleiden, Olivia Blaschko, Dani

Friedges, McKenna Vacek and Hannah Jensen. The Trojans have had a number of athletes move on to college teams in recent years, including Marissa Ekness (U of M Morris), Sydney Foss (Minnesota State-Moorhead), Alex Jendersee (Luther, IA), Katrina Hartman (Simpson, IA), Tawnee Jasan (Wisconsin-Superior) and Michaela Svoboda (Crown). Eaton will add to the list, having already committed to Division I Wisconsin-Green Bay. “We’ve got lots of talented players, it’s all a matter of getting players to step up to fill the positions that graduated last season,” Andersen said. “The most important thing is to come together as a team and create a good chemistry.” Delano is the defending Wright County East champion, and Andersen expects the Tigers to have another good team this year. She says Orono, along with her squad will be able to compete at a high level, and the Trojans’ goal is to claim the conference title. New Prague competes in Section 2AAA in the post-season, and that section is loaded with state-ranked teams each year. Prior Lake is the defending section champion and state runner-up, and Andersen expects the Lakers will be the team to beat this year. There are a number of teams capable of challenging them, among them Eden

Prairie and Chaska. “We expect to be seeded in the top half of the section,” she said. The Trojans opened the season last week with matches against Mayer Lutheran and Faribault and were scheduled to host Northfield Tuesday, Aug. 30. Their next match is tonight (September 1) at Shakopee. The next home match is Tuesday, Sept. 13, when they host Belle Plaine, the defending State Class AA champions. Four of the Trojans’ first six matches are against state-ranked teams. The Trojans will compete in three tournaments during the regular season. They will be in the Southwest Minnesota Challenge in Marshall September 9 and 10, the Hopkins Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 1, and the Cannon Falls tournament on Saturday, Oct. 8. Veterans return to Boys CC lineup At first glance, one would think Nick Meyer faces a rebuilding year in his 10th season as coach of the Trojan boys cross country team. The Trojans graduate four athletes - Wyatt Midtvedt, Justin Gregor, Tony Smith and Steve Kvam, who were either all-conference or honorable mention over the last two seasons. However, New Prague has some experienced runners on this year’s squad and is looking for some newcomers to step into the varsity lineup this season. The Trojans placed second in the Wright County Conference East Division last season and 10th at the Section 2AA meet. Midtvedt competed at last year’s state tournament as

well. John Simota is Meyer’s assistant on varsity, with Lori Deihl and Amy Kilian coaching the middle school squad. Student managers are Gabbie Giesen and Jessica Hanson. There are 30 athletes in grades 9-12 out for this year’s squad. ”We graduated several top runners from last year’s team, but we do return five athletes with varsity experience,” Meyer said. This list of top returnees is headed by Jack Siegle, a senior who emerged as one of the top runners in the WCC East last fall, earning All Conference honors. “He also showcased improved speed last spring, placing in the 4x800 relay and 3,200 meters.

His training has been very consistent and he enters the season poised for his best fall yet. He will make an excellent captain for us. Justin Cameron is another senior captain. “He has trained consistently for the past 15 months, including an impressive debut season last spring on the track. With another year of experience and training, he is ready to be a top scorer. Hayden DeGross had a very strong finish to the 2015 cross country season, just missing honorable mention at the WCC East meet. “He has trained very consistently, and is ready to take a big step forward this fall.” Other returnees to the varsity line-

up include  Ryker Huseby and Noah Weichert, who just missed honorable mention as a freshman last season. Candidates to fill out the varsity lineup include Ben Giles, a senior captain, and juniors Grant Schaap and Liam Fife. All performed well at the program’s annual alumni race “We are excited,” Meyer said. “We have some athletes returning with varsity experience and all of our returnees will need to step into new roles on the team. We’ll also have some newcomers in contention for varsity spots. It’ll be fun. “We have a great group of young men. Our returners have set the tone. They have high goals, they are working

hard, and they are having a lot of fun together as a team. “Having five returners with varsity experience is a great start, but all of them will be asked to play bigger roles this fall. We’ll have to take advantage of every practice and every meet and make tremendous progress each week. Working hard will be crucial, but learning fast will be equally important.” In the WCC East, Waconia is the returning team champion, and Meyer says they will be considered the favorite “on paper” as the season begins, but he notes that Hutchinson and Orono look to be very even and his team is also capable of contending for the top three spots. It will be an exciting championship meet, with a small margin separating five or even all six teams,” he said. In Section 2AA, Chanhassen and Shakopee are the top returning teams from 2015, and Chanhassen looks to be the favorite based on returning runners. Others in contention based on returning runners include Mankato West, Buffalo, and Waseca. Success this fall will also involve the development of new leaders on the team. They graduated four athletes who were varsity contributors since their 9th or 10th grade seasons and who dominated our varsity for the past three years. Our seniors and juniors now have a wonderful opportunity to take what they have learned from that class, inject their own personalities

and experiences, and be really positive leaders for this group. “Meets in September and October will give us a better picture of where we and other teams fit. On paper, we have our work cut out for us. But I believe strongly in this group, and we will strive to be competitive with the top half of the conference and section,” Meyer concluded Seniors John Bowman Justin Cameron Ben Giles Jack Siegle Joe Taylor Joe Yetzer Juniors Hayden DeGross Joe DeJong Liam Fife Bryce Grebner Ryker Huseby Grant Schaap Joseph Taylor Sophomores Jacob Albaugh Garrett Holets Drew Picha Trevor Prelesnik Cole Schoenbauer Simon Solheid Noah Weichert Ryan Wetschka Freshmen Josh Anderson Carson Davis Xavier Emerson Kyle Malecha Chase Skwira Jarek Tikalsky Blake Wymer Eighth grade Aiden Dorzinski

Strong sophomore class leads girls CC team

Coach Shawn Brandt is back for his fourth year with the Trojan girls cross country team. The team lost several starters from last year’s squad to graduation, including all-conference and fourtime state qualifier Maria Berg and honorable mention runners Tasha Bennett and Abby Milinkovich. They do return a strong sophomore class, including all-conference runner Kate Chromy and experienced runners Sydney Siegle, Iris McCarthy and Morgan Brandt. Brandt’s team placed third in the Wright County Conference East and 10th at the Section 2AA meet last season. He is assisted by John Simota, with student managers Gabby Giesen and Jessica Hansen. There are 21 athletes out for the sport this season. “We’ve got a balanced team this year, with several experienced runners and a large group of younger runners.” Brandt said. “We’re looking for steady improvement this season.” Brandt said he’s seen a great work ethic and leadership skills in the squad. “Most of these young ladies have been competing in cross country since middle school. He said there are sever-

al strong candidates to fill the spots on the varsity left open due to graduation. “We had several girls participate in our summer runner program; many also attended cross-country camps. Bethany Vasecka leads a talented class of freshman. She had a successful track season and looks strong entering the cross country season. “I’ve been very pleased with the effort and positive attitudes we’ve seen in practice so far this year,” Brandt said. “We have great leadership on the team and a fun group of young women who are willing to give maximum effort.” He added that he’d like to build up the numbers on his team over the next few years. “I am pleased with the large freshman class. We have steadily increased participation over the past several years, but we need depth. If we want to be competitive at the section meet, our team will need to continue growing in size, to about 30 or 40 athletes.” Goals for the team remain unchanged from past years. “We want continued improvement. Our goals are for each athlete to improve their individual PRs. As a team, we

want to place higher than we did last year at the WCC and Section 2AA meets. Holy Family Catholic is the defending WCC East champion. He said Waconia returns a strong squad and looks like the team to beat this season. Marshall and Shakopee qualified for state out of Section 2AA last season, and both return their top runners. He said they are ranked No. 3 and No. 7 in the state, respectively, in the preseason poll.

“This will be a rebuilding year for us. We are a very young team without Maria Berg, the best runner in our program’s history. But this provides an opportunity for someone else to take the lead position on our team. I believe our young team has the potential to place higher than we did last year at Conference and Sections. The New Prague Trojan girls tennis team.

Experienced Trojan tennis team sets sights high

Anna Borwege begins her second year as coach of the New Prague High School girls tennis team as the program comes off one of its most successful seasons since it was formed in the late 1970s. The Trojans had an 11-5 record (5-4 Wright County Conference) and finished in a fourth-place tie in the conference. The team also took first place in a tournament in Brainerd and advanced to the second round of the Section 2AA tournament before losing 4-3 to Mankato West. Individually, Jenna Lambrecht placed third in singles at the Section 2AA meet, missing a state tournament berth by one win. Toby Thietje returns as assistant coach for the program and is joined by Bryce Tesdahl and Chris Lonke. The team had 52 athletes report for the first week of practice. Jacob Washa is the student manager. “I have high expectations for this year’s squad,” said Borwege, who played at New Prague High School and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. “Our conference is very competitive and recently split into East and West divisions. We definitely got the tougher draw, but I am confident we can compete with the best.”

She said last year’s team motto was “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work.” “That is something we would like to continue during this season. Last season we won and lost as a team,” Borwege said. “If we can remain consistent and competitive, I believe we can be at the top of the conference. I would expect our overall record to improve from last year as well.” Jirina Flicek, a mainstay in the Trojan lineup for four years and an all-conference player last year, has graduated, but the Trojans returned most of their key singles and doubles players from last year, with newer players and improved veterans giving them added depth. Key returnees include Lambrecht, a senior who has been a key part of the lineup the last few years. “Last season, her overall record was 12- 4 and in the conference she was 6- 3. in the section tournament, her only losses came to the eventual state champion and state runner-up. Jenna is a consistent player who moves well on the court. She is a reliable member of the varsity singles lineup and we will be looking to her this year to continue

leading this team on and off the court. Annika Dumoulin is another senior singles player returning to the varsity lineup. Last season, she played the majority of matches in the No. 1 singles spot and competed with some of the best players in the state. “She is a smart and tactical player who brings a great deal of athleticism and natural talent to the game. She will be an intracle part to our singles lineup and team as a whole.” Jenna Larson is a sophomore returning for her second season on varsity. She played most of last season in the No. 3 and 4 singles position, finishing with a 12-4 overall record. “She is reliable, consistent, and has the right mindset for playing singles,” Borwege said. Returning doubles players include Julia Bauer, Haylee Prochaska, Carly Madigan and Lauren Hillstrom. “Each one of these players offer a different set of skills that make our doubles lineup stronger,” Borwege said. “I hope to find the right combinations of these players to set the team up for more success. The key to our success in doubles this year will be consistent partnerships, aggressive and offen-

sive play, and communication. Borwege said she was pleased with the turnout to start the season. “We have more than 50 players, and that is the largest number we have had in the history of the program. Many girls are playing tennis this year who have never picked up a racquet. It is so great that they are willing to learn and have really jumped on board with everything their coaches and teammates have introduced to them. It makes me excited for the future of the tennis program.” She added that many players returning to the varsity line up participated in private lessons, camps, team leagues, or played tennis on their own. “We also have several multiple sport athletes who used their training in those seasons to prepare for the tennis season such as strength and conditioning,” she added. “Aside from wins and losses, I hope that each player concludes the season knowing or feeling like they improved and had some success. The season is about each player’s individual experience and making it positive. Wins are just the ‘cherry on top.’” Delano has won the Wright County Conference title each

of the past nine years, and Borwege said they are the favorites to claim the WCC East title this season, but adds that Holy Family and her team will provide a challenge to the Tigers’ dominance. Prior Lake is the defending Section 2AA champion, and finished second at the state tournament. Borwege said they and Shakopee will be strong. “The section is split into north and south subsections, and I feel we have a great chance of competing for a top spot in the south,” she said. THE NEW PRAGUE TIMES

New coach to continue girls soccer success

Megan Thompson is the new head girls soccer coach at New Prague High School, and she’s working to continue the strong showings the Trojans have had as the young program begins to mature. Steve Kehrli was the varsity coach for the first seven years of the team’s existence. He remains with the program, as B-Squad coach, but wanted to step back from the rigors of running a high school program. Thompson’s other assistant is Matt Anderson, and student managers are Lizzy Zweber, Jill Heselton and Nia Arguedas. There are 35 athletes in grades 9-12 out for the sport, and another 11 eighth graders who will fill spots on one of the high school-level teams. The Trojans are coming off an 8-5-4 season that included an unusually high number of overtime contests. The Trojans lost a number of key players to graduation, including Leah Bissel and Grace Yackly as well as Ally Kubes, a five-year starter at goalkeeper. However they have a number of experienced hands ready to lead the team this season, including Hannah McWilliams, Serena Thomas, Josie Herrmann and Olivia Simon, all on the defensive side of the ball. Taylor Koehnen appears ready to be the full-time goalkeeper for the Trojans. She gained

valuable varsity experience last year as Kubes missed part of the season due to injuries. “I’m very happy with the young talent we have coming up. We’ve got some players who will get some varsity time this year. What we’re working on right now is to work as a team and play simple soccer,” Thompson said. That plays into the theme the team has set for the season: Stonger Together. Orono is the defending Wright County Conference champion. The Spartans are a perennially strong team that finished second in the State Class A tournament last season after winning it the previous year. Last season was New Prague’s first as a Class AA team, as the school’s enrollment pushed the team into the top class. So despite the 8-4-4 regular season record, the Trojans were the No. 8 seed and faced the state’s top-ranked team, Lakeville North, in the playoff opener. North went on to win the Section 1AA title and placed third at the state tournament. In an effort to gain some respect in the section seeding process, the Trojans have beefed up their schedule with Class AA teams, including Section 1AA teams Lakeville South, Rochester Mayo and Rochester Century. “Both our conference and section will be difficult again

The New Prague Trojan girls soccer team. this year,” Thompson said, saying she expects the team to continue the progress it has made over the past few years. The Trojans opened their season last week with games at Bloomington Jefferson and Lakeville South, and they hosted Mankato East on Tuesday, Aug. 30. They are scheduled to play at Waconia on Thursday, Sept. 1, to open the Wright County Conference schedule. Their next home game is Thursday, Sept. 8, against Watertown-Mayer.

Boys soccer going through growing pains

The New Prague Trojan boys soccer team can expect to experience more growing pains during the 2016-17 season. The program, now in its eighth season, made the transition from Class A to Class AA last year and had a 4-13 record (2-5 Wright County Conference). Now in their second season as a Class AA team, the team’s schedule has transitioned to having more Section 1AA and Class AA teams, meaning wins will likely be harder to come by. But Jonathan Hopke, in his eighth season as the Trojans’ head coach, says while this year’s team is young, it is the most technically skilled team he’s had. “We’ve got three state tournament teams on our schedule this year (Rochester Mayo, Faribault and Class A champion Orono). I’m not complaining, this is a schedule we need to have for a school our size. The schedule reflects the need to improve player development and the overall soccer program in the community in order to meet the challenge.” Hopke is assisted by Joe Gliori and Robb Morris, with student mangers Hanna Nordick and Ashlyn Rivard. The Trojans had 51 athletes report for practice, the biggest number they’ve had. That means the Trojans will be able to field three full teams, allowing younger players to compete at lower levels to help in their development. Key returnees to this year’s team include the four

captains, goalkeeper Noah Kottke, defender Jack Guerrette, midfielder Zach Erickson and defender Jayson Nordick. Other players who will play important roles for the Trojans this season include midfielders Seth Broberg and Cole Uplegger. They will add solid passing with the ability to score outside the box. Midfielders, Riley Whitcomb and Mason DeGross will provide stability to support the attackers. The Trojans’ top scorer from last season, Chris Anderson, has graduated, and several other important role players from last season have moved on as well, but Hopke said the first weeks of practice have been satisfying. “Its been great to see players improve their play as the week went on,” the coach said. “It seemed that many players were able to become more comfortable in the team atmosphere and improved their play because of their social surroundings.” He added that it’s now common for soccer players to play with club teams in the spring and summer, and many of the players continue training in the winter months as well. “This is becoming more common, but wasn’t like this until the last couple years,” he said, noting the difference is that in the past they had athletes who played soccer, and now they have soccer players who are athletes, meaning they make the sport a priority. Orono is the defending Wright County Conference

champion. Hopke said he expects Holy Family Catholic will have a team this year that could challenge the always powerful Spartan squad. “If we stay healthy and things go our way, we could be as high as third,” he said. Rochester Mayo is the defending Section 1AA champion and defeated New Prague in the first round of the playoffs last season. Hopke said Mayo and Owatonna will likely be the top teams this season. “Given our schedule this season, we can learn how to compete at the AA level and will learn a lot about ourselves in the process. That said, our goal is to win our first section game.”

The Trojans opened their season with three games in four days last week, playing Lakeville South, Faribault and Farmington. Their next game is Thursday, Sept. 1, at Waconia. Their next home game is Thursday, Sept. 8, against Mayer Lutheran. The New Prague Trojan swimming and diving team.

New coach excited for future of Trojan swim program

Tracy Torgerson is the new head coach for the New Prague Trojan swimming and diving team, taking over from Jennifer Ongie Jindra, who decided to step down this summer. Torgerson, a former All-American athlete at the University of Minnesota, has been an assistant for the Trojans the last three years, and prior to that coached at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School and St. Cloud State University. She is assisted by Heather Murphy and Cassie Jung. Student manager is Callie Schroeder. The Trojan swimmers had 46 athletes report this season, one of the biggest turnouts in school history. They will be working to improve on last year’s 2-10 dual meet record. They will also

be the foundation for what is anticipated to be a growing program. This will be the last season the Trojans will use the Tri-City United Montgomery Middle School pool as its home base. Construction is underway on a new home for the Trojans at the Central Education Campus in New Prague. That facility is expected to open next summer and make swimming more accessible for New Prague athletes. “We as a coaching staff are very optimistic about this season,” Torgerson said. “We hope to better our win-loss record, and we feel we have the talent to place in the top our in the section and have multiple state qualifiers. Key returnees to this year’s team include cap-

tains Abby Kallal and Bella Schulte, as well as returning section finalists Sarah Helvick, Ellen Popple and Emily Schaap. “We have a group of strong senior leaders and many swimmers who have trained over the summer ready to step into a scoring role,” Torgerson said. The Trojans did lose five seniors who played a significant role on the team last year. Lilly Schulte was a section finalist. “The coaching staff is really impressed by the hard work each athlete is putting in, as well as the team cohesiveness we have already established,” Torgerson said. She added many of the team members trained with summer clubs such as: Storm, North Star Diving

Club, Girl Scouts Swim Team and the New Prague Summer Swim Clinic. “We plan to have a ton of fun, grow as a team, and improve,” Torgerson said. “We hope our team can double our winning record, have conference and section finalists, and have multiple state entries. Hutchinson was the Wright County Conference champion last season, and the always strong TigerSharks are again the favorite this year. The Trojans hope to move up to the middle of the pack in the conference standings. Mankato West is the defending Section 1A champion and will be the favorite to repeat. The Trojans hope to move up into the upper echelon in the section.
