CHAPTER PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to the October Edition of Arcus. Thank you to all that attended the annual dinner, what a sensational night. If you have not seen any of the pictures yet check out the IESANZ Qld Chapter Facebook page there are some great photos and some photos that some might prefer hidden. Special thanks goes to our sponsors for the night, without your support the dinner could not happen. I think an additional thank you to Shane Jacobson is also well deserved, not only was he a great host for the evening, but a great bloke in general. I will always think of him as the guy that holds the record for the largest lighting load at the Melbourne Tennis Centre and beating the lighting load for Metallica. Also, do not forget to regularly check the IES- Queensland Chapter web pages on social media networks for news and events photos. http://www.facebook.com/iesqld http://twitter.com/IESQld http://www.linkedin.com/company/ies-the-lightingsociety---qld-chapter

QUEENSLAND CHAPTER- 2014 AWARDS PRESENTATION AND ANNUAL DINNER NEWS Oh what a night! Well, the IES QLD Chapter Awards Presentation and Annual Dinner has been and gone. What a great night we had. The event was much earlier than usual this year as Brisbane has the G20 Summit occurring in November. So with the closures and disruptions around that time, we had to stage the event in September. Held at ‘The Boulevard Room’ at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 26th September, the evening was a huge success. It goes without saying that these events don’t get very far without the generous contributions from our sponsors. A special thank you again to all our sponsors for the evening:

Our MC extraordinaire for the evening – Shane Jacobson (aka ‘Kenny’), did a magnificent job keeping the evening on track as well as injecting a whole lot of humour throughout the night. As it turns out Shane was a (stage) lighting designer in his previous life and so really related to the audience and the awards as a whole. Our thanks to Shane Jacobson for his exceptional efforts. To add bit of fun to the evening this year, we hired a photo-booth from ‘Photorazzi’ and judging by the photos, everyone had a bit of fun with it. The pictures turned out great. For those who haven’t seen the photos yet, check out on www.photorazzi.com.au (go to ‘Gallery’ and look for the ‘2014 IES QLD Chapter Awards Presentation & Dinner’ or entre the event date – 26/09/2014). The pictures can be downloaded so make sure you have a look if you haven’t already!. Pictures availability will expire soon. The entrants this year for all the categories were of a very high standard. The students continue to impress and the standard of the professional categories increases every year. Thank you to all the nominees for your entries and congrats to all those who were awarded for their efforts. Finally, this year our final numbers came in at 226 – which is a great turnout. Thank you to all who attended this year and again to all our sponsors for their support. We look forward to your support again next year.

LIGHTING DESIGN AWARDS 2014 There were eleven (11) entries for the Lighting Design Awards for this year. Refer to ARCUS September issue for more details about the entries. Best Cinco for the Golden Orbs Gasworks Award of Excellence Located in the new Gasworks Plaza in Newstead, Brisbane, ‘Golden Orbs’ is an interactive, illuminated artwork suspended from the heritage gasometer structure. Originally erected in 1887, the remnants of the gas holder now form the centrepiece of a 17 hectare urban renewal precinct which contains a new community of retail, commercial and civic spaces, as well as parklands and river walkways. The light globes used in this work were custom designed and manufactured for the project by Rooster Lighting for Best Cinco, and respond to activity in their immediate surroundings. Warm white LEDs were chosen for their longevity, colour rendering and low power consumption. The artwork is a permanent fixture within the Gasworks Plaza and the entire installation was designed and built with durability as a high priority.
Judge’s Comments: The judges thought that the interactive nature of the lighting suspended from the bones of an old gas storage tank plus the incidental use of accent lighting on landscaping and the iron crown of the gasometer itself was utterly enchanting and deserving of an excellence. The well balanced ambient levels of light provide an easily navigable space that offers a gentle transition from street to cafés or a place to pause and release your inner child.

A Sense of Occasion – Doug Brimblecombe for the Caloundra Art Gallery Award of commendation The Caloundra Regional Art Gallery is a 'Category A' non-collecting gallery, and showcases local visual arts through gallery curated shows, touring exhibitions, and provides many diverse benefits to their community. The gallery's motto is 'Excellence, Education and Equity'.
The original lighting scheme was inefficient, difficult to use and offered poor utility and flexibility. A Sense of Occasion were engaged by the Sunshine Coast City Council to Design and provide tender documents for the refurbishment of the lighting systems. Evaluate / award tenders and manage construction contractors. The resulting lighting was described by the client as a “world class visual environment”. It now provides a substantially more efficient and far easier to use lighting scheme with all conservation concerns for artworks fully addressed.
Judge’s Comments: The judges were particularly taken by the low key flexibility of this lighting design that worked in with the versatility of the gallery interior structure itself which places its complete focus upon artworks on display.

Lumen8 Architectural Lighting for Courtyard House Award of commendation The goal of the lighting was to highlight the architectural features of this sophisticated home with an energy efficient lighting solution without sacrificing the creation of a comfortable, clean interior, and allowing a strong emphasis on enhancing the contemporary landscape by night. These core values were achieved through strategically locating low glare down-lights, wall mounted and in-ground up-lights, free standing lamps, and pendants throughout the property to blend balance with emphasis.
Judge’s Comments: The judges were particularly taken by the careful placement of lighting, the awareness of texture and the control of contrast throughout. The open plan living spaces and the extensive use of glass allowed a considerable softening of the boundary between interior and exterior. The judges wish it known that had they viewed the house during daylight hours they would have been equally impressed by the utility of natural light.

Tony Dowthwaite Lighting Design for Capri on Via Roma Award of commendation
Capri on Via Roma is an existing retail, food and café destination that has undergone an extensive refit. The new architecture is bold with dominant, angular roof planes, exposed structure and expansive interior spaces. The lighting was required to reflect and emphasise these bold forms and provide for an eclectic range of contemporary tenancies and instil a village like atmosphere to this prominently positioned destination. The lighting solution made full use of the bold angular lines of the roof that framed the interior views giving a layered depth to the whole structure. The resulting ambient affect provides an appreciable and inviting gradient from car park to interior and the alfresco areas that lie between.
Judge’s Comments: The lighting applied at Capri on Via Roma made full use of the architecture to make a bold and inviting statement in a visually competitive landscape. The choice of colour and an appreciation of value of silhouetting gave a depth to this scheme that is apparent from its many vantage points and contributed greatly to its inviting nature.

Tony Dowthwaite Lighting Design for the Tavarua Island Resort, Fiji Award of commendation The Tavarua Island resort is in Fiji and is extensively constructed from local island timbers utilised in various forms from unfinished logs and roughly hewn beams to finished timbers and joinery. The resulting structure is a profound and welcoming statement of island life and a reflection of the tropical paradise in which it sits. The lighting brief was required to deliver on many levels, to reveal and highlight the structure discretely whilst offering ample illumination for way finding. Overlaying this was the creation of a subtle ambience for diners and an elevated lighting presence at task areas such as the bar. All elements to be harmonious with the structure and enhance the welcoming impression it creates.
Judge’s Comments: It was the unanimous view of the judges that the lighting had been applied with great sensitivity toward the style and fabric of the construction and the ambience of the structure that this created. Subtle up lighting and highlighting of warm colour temperature provided the ideal light to show off the natural tones and textures of the native timber.

Tony Dowthwaite Lighting Design for the Royal Pines Resort – Convention and Exhibition facility Award of commendation The RACV resort convention spaces are considered as being on the upper tier of conference and events facilities on the Gold Coast in terms of size and flexibility. Having not received any substantial alteration since its completion in 1990 the client felt it time for the convention spaces to receive some attention. Budget and operational constraints did not allow for substantial alterations to the structure so the lighting was required to achieve its aims from largely existing vantage points. The use of LEDs with their discrete size and longevity was thought to offer many of the benefits the client was seeking, and the use of high performance down lights in the high level of the concourse delivered both the light quality and quantity required with a high degree of discretion.
Judge’s Comments: The stand out element of this scheme was the extraordinary degree of control exhibited by the down lights used to illuminate the main area. The judges were hard pressed to accurately locate the origin of illumination yet at ground level were not conscious of anything other than a perfectly well lit space. This fixture selection and application is to be applauded. The other elements of the space, the staircase and its chandelier, the function rooms and the elevated walkway treatment were also well executed.

Aurecon (as part of the GCUH Engineering Joint Venture with Jacobs SKM) for Gold Coast University Hospital – Clinical Services Building Main Entry and Atrium Award of commendation The clinical services building is part of the Gold Coast University Hospital. At the heart of this building is the atrium which is not only the critical communication hub for foot traffic but also an elevated, visually engaging space. The lighting applied complements the dominant architectural elements of the vertical timber beams and the internally lit lift shaft plus the sense of elevation created by the atrium itself. Grouped spot lights enhance the sense of elevation with purposeful accent and up lighting whilst lower key linear lighting define access routes and points of interest with more playful elements like oversized table lamps at the lower, more human sized level.
Judge’s Comments: The judges believed the lighting treatment of this space was wholly appropriate and very well executed. It was quite obvious that the space had to be both welcoming and business like to best fulfil the expectations and interaction of people using hospitals as patients and as a workplace. The lighting offers genuine and sympathetic support and reinforcement of the architecture with sufficient independent presence to be more than simply illuminating a space.

Aurecon (as part of the GCUH Engineering Joint Venture with Jacobs SKM) for Gold Coast University Hospital – Clinical Services Building External Main Entry and Canopy Award of commendation The external entry walkway is a key link between the hospital itself and the new Gold Coast Rapid Transit system. The walkway is defined by a serpentine shelter structure between the clinical services building and the light rail station. This roof structure is both substantial yet free flowing, up lighting reveals exposed spars of the outlying ceiling that flank the lower, inverted “V” element containing recessed down lights that provide for pedestrian illumination. This combination not only provides effective illumination but a visually attractive treatment to such a bold architectural feature.
Judge’s Comments: This was a well thought through element that handled the transition from building to station very well. The lighting treatment not only provided so well for pedestrians and their vision but also recognised the shelter’s presence as a significant architectural element in its own right and applied lighting to reveal and define it at night.

Aurecon + Richard Kirk Architects + Hassell for the Advanced Engineering Building – University of Queensland Award of commendation The 500 seat auditorium is the largest space within the new Advanced Engineering Building on Queensland University’s St Lucia Campus. The building is an exemplar of sustainable construction and educational infrastructure that encapsulates the essence of advanced engineering within its very fabric. The design development of a fitting lighting scheme went through a number of iterations in order to deliver on the eventually harmonious, versatile and efficient solution. The resulting design applied twelve bespoke, triangular prism, pendants that incorporated not only accent, task and ambient solutions but also emergency lighting and a winch mechanism to greatly improve maintenance access which is wholly appropriate for the Advanced Engineering Building.
Judge’s Comments: The final solution delivered on its main illumination tasks and incorporates a significant degree of ingenuity to meet the complimentary requirements of ready access for maintainability. The architecture of the auditorium was uncompromising and presented substantial challenges for the lighting designers which they overcame with a solution that was aesthetically aligned with the architecture and applied multi levelled ingenuity in the best traditions of advanced engineering.

LUMINAIRE DESIGN AWARDS 2014 There were three (3) entries for the Luminaire Design Awards for this year. Refer to ARCUS September issue for more details about the entries. The excellent award went to Intralux for their Kove LED. The commendation award went to Klik Systems for their AEB Pendant. Congratulation for both Klik Systems and Intralux. Excellence award The brief for Kove LED was to design a high performance LED, fully integrated cove/pelmet lighting system which has similar light distribution and output of the fluorescent based Intralux cove/pelmet lighting predecessors. As an Australian product developer and manufacturer, it is important that we can design a product that performs to an Intralux standard but also is able to be manufactured for a low enough production cost in order to compete in the international market place based on price, design and performance.
Circles, curves and tight corners are a breeze when using Kove LED. The low profile, fully integrated design of the luminaire enables the fixtures to sit side-by-side or end-to-end to eliminate any potential shadows.
As a result of intensive research and development efforts, Kove LED boasts a ‘no-tool’ adjustable mechanism that allows the installer to pivot the light source in incremental steps between 0 – 36 deg. By incorporating a mechanism with this calculated versatility, Kove LED addresses the issue of adaptability while keeping the product size to an absolute minimum.
The fully integrated fixture incorporates the unrivalled ‘Plug+Go’ 5-way connection system featuring high end, light specific connectors. This system facilitates simple installation, allowing for up to 60 meters of Kove LED to be installed from one circuit, whilst also incorporating all controls wiring.

Commendation award The Klik Systems AEB Pendant is a bespoke luminaire developed solely for use in the new Queensland University’s Advanced Engineering Building at St Lucia Campus. Klik Systems Qld were engaged by Aurecon, RKAH and Hassell architects in association, to design and manufacture 12 bespoke fittings for what is to be the centre piece of this project, the state-of-the-art GHD Auditorium – a 500 seat lecture theatre supported by large-span timber trusses from mixed hardwoods. This is the largest auditorium at the UQ and the most visible feature of this building. The ultimate brief came to call for twelve large scale triangular prism pendants to give vertical and horizontal illumination: the triangular shape working aesthetically with the triangular nature of the ceiling trusses. T5 lamps were to be used to give vertical illumination to accentuate the detail of the ceiling and provide ambient light with no lamp imaging visible, and narrow beam “Dark Lighter” LED down lights, down clustered to achieve 320 lux at the task level and 2W/m2/100 lux. The pendant needed to incorporate emergency lighting and to house a motorised hoist to enable the pendant to be lowered for maintenance. The whole lighting system needed to be DALI controlled, have good thermal performance and be easy to clean, and be built to fall within weight and budget limitations.

STUDENT LUMINAIRE DESIGN AWARDS 2014 Cresto Ushijima, for the entry: ‘The Egg’ Outstanding Creative Merit Starting with an idea of a cracked egg, to depict rebirth of technology for the better. This unusual egg shaped luminaire sits upon a nest of twisted aluminium, and serves three purposes: ambient lighting provided by an uplight at the peak, a side oriented reading light with clear glass shell, and on the opposite side is a dimmable halogen light with milky glass shell for a cosy room light. The design is touch sensitive and offers different colours for the different functions. The multifaceted unit shows real creative flair, the judges regarded this interactive luminaire design as an excellent combination of function and form.

Carissa Cornelius, for her entry: ‘Terrarium Glow’ Best Overall Luminaire Design The Terrarium Glow is a skylight with a twist, featuring five large light tubes that each contain a self-maintained ecosystem that does not need to be watered. During the day, sunlight fills the long glass envelopes to introduce natural light into the internal space, while at night, solar powered LED lamps are used to illuminate the terrarium. Use of switchable glass allows for the envelopes to morph into glowing orbs with light intensity as desired, or it can switch to clear to show the self contained garden of succulents, soil and stones within. The judges were really impressed with the bold scope of this design. With Carissa’s intelligent use of daylight, efficient light sources and advanced materials in manufacture, the Terrarium Glow is an outstanding luminaire concept, with a real marketable appeal.
