FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE Marion Livingston “Pat” Boling,’32 died July 21, 2004, in Templeton, CA. Pat was born in Eddy, OK on an Indian Reservation, where his father was a preacher. His mother moved the family to the Los Angeles area after his father drowned trying to save his sister in the North Platte River. Like so many that migrated west in that era the family had to start from scratch. Pat contributed by caddying at the Lakeside Golf Course for the likes of Gary Cooper and Oliver Hardy. Upon graduating from, NNHS in 1932, He joined the Navy and learned to fly. While stationed in Pearl Harbor he married and consequently was released from his naval duties in 1941, just days before the attack. He then spent the war transporting troops before settling into his commercial airline career. In 1958 he put his career on hold to pursue his dream of setting a transpacific flight record, which he successfully realized by flying from Manila, Philippines to Pendleton OR, in a single engine Beechcraft “Bonanza” over a span of 45 hours and 42 minutes, covering 6,979 miles, which bested the previous record by roughly 2,000 miles, and he was dubbed for a time the “Lindberg of the Pacific” His career with United continued. He was based in San Francisco, and was marked by many inaugural flights, appearances in media campaigns and his position as chief pilot of the”747”. He retired in 1976. He is survived by his wife, four children and grandchildren. REUNION th

Sportsmen’s Lodge was truly Blue & Gray on June 26 , with three classes having luncheon reunions. The class of 1944 had 50 attending with 1948 having 100 and 1949 with 75 attending. A lot of walking between parties was done as people invariably ended up at the wrong room. That evening the Esquires also held a reunion there. The atmosphere of friendliness and good-will was so prevalent through the day and evening. th THE CLASS OF ’44 winter and summer, enjoyed a 60 Reunion luncheon at the Sportsman’s Lodge Attending were 30 from ’44, with 20 spouses and guests in all there were 50 alumni sharing memories, mementos and current activities. They were all glad to have made the effort to come and decided not to wait five years. They will meet every two years. This will be your first notice for June 24, 2006. The Reunion Committee consisted of: Don Couch, Orren Harris, Marilyn Straub Barton and Bill Coburn. th

THE CLASS OF ’48 held their 56 reunion with a brunch, approximately 100 attended. John Riley, chairman, Ralph Bauer and Don Paglia shared the Master of Ceremonies. Betty Mahler Vess spearheaded the search and contact of members of the class. Betty High field Clarke provided most of the past records and addresses of the members. th

THE CLASS OF ’49 held their 55 reunion. The committee for ’49 consisted of Ricky Gunnell, JoAn Kurland Gumbert, Gail Huber Coyle, Marion Niblack Carlson, Marian Shepherd Lang and Margaret Shepherd May. The Master Ceremonies was Dick Wells and the great music was by Kevin Lopez. He is the son of classmate Gus Lopez. ESQUIRES held their first all year’s reunion; it was attended by approximately 80 people. The event was created and sponsored by Carroll Whitney and Tim McCollum. Graduation dates ranged from 1938 to 1959. Two of the original founders, Class of 1938, were in attendance. It was a wonderful evening, even if you just counted the shouts of joy when one would see some old friend or two that they had not seen in 40 or 50 years. A Reunion Booklet is being created by Dave Arnold. For those who were unable to attend and wish to have a booklet, contact Tim McCollum e-mail [email protected] . They are planning the next reunion for the year 2009. th

THE CLASS OF ‘54 held their 50 class reunion in grand style. It was held at the Hilton Hotel, Woodland Hills on June 26, 2004, with three hundred ninety four classmates and guests nearly filling the four hundred seat Hilton Ballroom. Under the leadership and direction of the Reunion Steering Committee led by Jerry Jackson, Chair, Jerry Bruce, Treasurer, Barbara (Gillette) Celello, Secretary and Nancy (Nathanson) Farris, Chair, FindersKeepers Committee. Their 21/2 years of creating the reunion was well rewarded by the attendees’ appreciation. They had a wonderful hard working committee that made it such a huge success. They located over 75% of the class. Buddy Teachout, known for his singing during annual Alumni Day Reunions, led the class in “God Bless America”. Jerry Jackson worked in cooperation with Randy Delling, NHHS Principal in providing the 80 piece, award winning NHHS Band playing NH Fight songs and band marching music as they entered the room and wound their way amongst the tables. Another Reunion event totally surprising attendee’s included the Burton Brown (NHH Class of ’53) family creation showing the Class of 54’s Video. Copies of the Video or DVD combing the history of the developing San Fernando Valley/North Hollywood, the class of ‘54 video 2

and coverage of the highlight events during the 54/50th reunion are available by contacting Burton Brown 8027 Cozycroft Avenue, Winnetka, CA 91306-1709 or e-mail [email protected] $10.00 per Video or DVD. The reverend Kay Hickman Slocum, NH Class of ’53 ended the official program by presenting a beautiful benediction. “This truly was a time to remember”, as quoted by many attendees. PICNIC We had a great turn out, over 400 attendees signed in and with spouses we had closer to 500. We had five reunion events the previous evening and many of the attendees stayed to attend the picnic on Sunday. The classic cars were very well represented by Chuck Smith with his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Hardtop, Vic Diels’s 1940 Ford Opera Coupe, Ed Newcomb‘s ’32 High Board Roadster, Erland Harting’s ’29 Roadster Pick-up, Harold Knowles’s 1940 Ford Coupe, Lon Bentley’s ’55 T Bird, Bob Michael’s 1930 Street Rod and Frank Poritelli’s 57 Chevrolet. Maurice Weiss’ group played music for listening and dancing, yes the weather was cool enough for dancing. The picnic food was prepared and served by the NHHS Boys Basketball Team, led by their coach, Rob Bloom; the team has been invited to the “Prestigious Tournament” in Maui, Hawaii this December. They are still in need of more donations, if you wish to make a donation you can do so by sending a check noted to the Boy’s Basketball Tournament. The Cheerleaders put on a performance of their routines for the audience; they were led by their sponsor: Lori Nelson. They let us know how much they enjoyed talking to the past cheerleaders and hearing the cheers of the past years. They in fact enjoyed themselves so much they have volunteered for next year. We were treated to beautiful singing by some of the members of the NHHS Choir; this choir is under the supervision of Chris Rodriquez. They are a prize winning choir and displayed their great talent for all to enjoy. We as Alumni members are able to contribute to this great program, along with many others. The committee that made the picnic such a huge success was headed by Al Held: with Diana Kooden Davidson, Jim & John Klingaman, Jan & Rod Hatch, Nat & Betty (Thomas) Hillyer, Aleda Murrell Cowan, Margie McIntyre, Alegra Levy Bosworth, Ricky Gunnell, Patti Jose Mick, Gail Huber Coyle, Ferne Hoover, , Pat Fleming Duran, Anne Briscoe Laughlin, Jean Hardy Reese, Pam Hicks Mann, Barbara Poulton Coatsworth. Arlene Wheeless Strang, Orrin Harris, and Teresa Venegas Cook. Harriet Olshen Valens did a great job on Publicity, as she does every year. The NHHS history and memorabilia is kept up yearly and arranged by Dot and Dick Mutaw, who do such a great job of tracking all our history. This year they were ably assisted by Nat and Betty Thomas Hillyer and Bob Rediger. Thanks to our Director Lillian Hertan Cummings who works so hard all year long and to our great friend Jim Cummings who is always there to help us. Marian Coveney Hardestry enjoyed the picnic very much; she was from the earliest class to sign in this year. Thanks for coming; it is wonderful to see you. Barbara “Bobby” Burke Kloke lives in Billington, WA. She retired from the Billington Edison School District; she was Supervisor of the Primary Music District. When she attended NHHS, she was President of Girls Self Government, an Ephebian, Drama Club (where she starred with Noah Beery, Jr. ’31 and Alan Ladd) ‘34 and performed in Operettas. She graduated from UCLA. Harrell “Corkie” Kloke retired from the Newport Bank. He still lives in Newport and keeps very busy; he was past president of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce in Pasadena, Kiwanis. He holds and Honorary Life Membership on the Tournament of Roses. While in NNHS he was a cheerleader with Alan Ladd. He married Madelyn” Peggy” Spurgeon ’34. They were married over 60 years. Robert Wells, William Archer and James Sabin, class of Winter ’43, were in uniform when they graduated from NHHS on January 28, 1943. Bill and Jimmy in USN and Robert in USMC. Robert’s last day of school was 10/30/42. Sworn into the marines 11/6/42. Due to special ruling by the LA School Board they allowed any student in their last semester and passing the five week or ten week test could join the service and graduate with their class. That is more interesting information about our alumni that served in WWII. Verne Vang, remembered for competing in free exercise and on the parallel bars on the NHHS Valley Championship Gymnastics Team, passed way on July 2, 2004. After military service and graduating from college, Verne followed a career in finance and also became a private pilot instructor. Ken O’Dell has moved back to within 6 blocks of NNHS. While at NHHS he was with the Band &Orchestra, Wrestling Team. Ken retired from the studios; he performed at 6 months old with Mary Pickford and later was a dancer. A very interesting story he tells is the Revolution of ’46 that was led by “The Claw” the identity a mystery even today. The revolution took palace because Mamie Sallee, Girls VP decided to separate the girls and boys during lunch time (seems that there was improper behavior during the noon movie) and put a hedge between them, well this did not set well with the student body and they had a walk-out in mass. Anyone else remember this event Gary Herberg passed away. He was on the first string of the football team (which we believe won the Valley championship that year); he was a talented cartoonist who frequently contributed to the “Arcade”. 5

Valley championship that year); he was a talented cartoonist who frequently contributed to the “Arcade”. th And will be missed especially by Dennis Chaldecott who was looking forward to the 60 class reunion to re-encounter his then-close friend. Barbara Barton Garrett Shirley Leschander passed away on May 10, 2004 in Burbank; she had been hospitalized for several years due to Alzheimer. She lived in the valley all her life, first in North Hollywood, then in Burbank. She will be missed by all that knew her. Marilyn Hogeland Peterson Johnston who lives in Nevada City, CA was visited this past June by Jackie Cluett Reeder ’47 who lives in Oregon and was on her way down to see Betty Gray and other NHHS classmates. In May of this year she spent time with her sister-in-law Pat Peterson Tily ’47 in St Kitts in the West Indies. She was married to Paul Peterson who passed away in 1974 Ken Soule and his wife Dee have been doing a lot of traveling. They will be going on a cruise to Hawaii in April and have just returned from a two weeks visit with their children in Colorado. That is what is so great about retirement. Bob Hixson student body president W’48 passed away. After graduation and earning his private pilot license he enlisted in the National Guard 562 Air Force Band. The unit was activated in 1950 and sent to Georgia, where he met his wife. After discharge he gained his commercial flying license and joined Lockheed Missile Division and the Lockheed Corporation. He also was a corporate pilot for Pacific Automation, finally returning to Lockheed Skunk Works until his retirement. He is survived by five children. All who remember Bob remember his smile and his love of animals. th th Andrew Gilmore and his wife Beverly will celebrate their 50 anniversary this September 4 with a cruise to Alaska. Congratulations!! th Donna Cole Godfrey and her husband Fred celebrated their 50 anniversary with a cruise to the South Pacific. They started in Tahiti went to Fiji, Samoa, French Polynesian Islands, New Zealand and stayed in Australia three days. Very impressed with the friendliness of the Australians and New Zealanders. th Thomas Garry Smith died April 18, 2002. He did attend the 50 class reunion. His wife Elizabeth said, “Seeing everyone was so much fun for him”. He will be missed by his classmates. Larry Warren and his wife Anne were honored to receive The Pola Nirenska Award 2001 for Lifetime Achievement as individuals in the field of dance. Their contributions to the field of dance resonate through the local dance community (Washington, D.C.) and throughout the world. Larry has had several books published on famous dancers. He is a retired professor of dance at the University of Maryland. Glenn Storment and his wife Beverly have surfaced back in the good old USA after having lived in Baja, Mexico for many years, where Glenn continued to paint. They are now planning to travel all over the th country in their 5 wheel. Glenn attended the picnic and was greeted by many surprised classmates who had not heard from him for many years. Joe Morigi,Roy Murakami, George Murakami, Bob Weatherwax, Mike Hibler, Warren Schiller, Lee Reem’51 and Richie Nelson’51 gathered together at the home of Vince Piazza for a boy’s night out. Everyone enjoyed being 18 years again even for a few hours. Barbara Brommer Freshwater enjoyed a 17 day trip to Estonia, Finland, Lapland and Norway. Half of her trip was north of the Artic Circle and was at the time of no nights. It was quite an experience. Bob Low was saddened to learn of the passing of La Verne George Yeroxa ’39. Prior to WW11 his parents decided the back yard needed color, and they went to the Mahoney Egg Ranch, which was owned by the parents of now Cardinal Mahoney, and purchased some three day old chicks. Before long they had a surplus of premium range eggs. La Verne’s grandmother was one of his best customers. When the Valley Times became an afternoon newspaper, he acquired the neighborhood route, and La Vern’s grandmother, parents and La Verne herself all became regular subscribers. That was North Hollywood then. Marilyn Wolff Humber passed away July 16, 2004 in Auburn, CA. After a courageous fight with breast cancer. She relocated to Auburn, CA in 1978. After starting several businesses she got her real estate license. In 1993 she received additional distinction by obtaining her CRS, GRI and SERS certification and worked most recently for Caldwell Bankers in Sacramento. She is survived by her mother, sister, brother, seven children, nineteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. News of Pat Harrington comes via her son Mike Strehlow from Sherwood, Or. Pat is living in an assisted care facility suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Her memory loss involves more recent events but she still speaks of some of her classmates. She recognized many of the pictures in the yearbooks and remembers lots of the events recorded there. Mike is requesting, if some of her friends could send her greetings through him, he will deliver them to her. He has given his address, Patricia Lee Harrington , C/O Mike Strehlow, 23688 SW Old Highway 99w, Sherwood, OR 97140 his e-mail [email protected] Joseph Railla is alive and fairly well living in Sebastapol, CA with his wife Suzanne, who has raised a litter of eight labs for Canine Companions for Independence. Joseph finds himself busy with chores around the ranch and with a very enjoyable architectural practice. He was honored to have won a “20 Year Award” from the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for the Browder Residence located in Burbank, CA. Barbara (Gillette) Celello is taking orders for the “54 Reunion Memory Book and taking names for the class’s mailing list. You may contact her at 9201 Petit Ave. Northridge CA 91343 or 6 [email protected].

They were sorry to miss the picnic but this day only comes once in a lifetime. Congratulations! Mary Ann (Gaga) Farmer Huber passed away three years ago from lung cancer; Mary Ann lived 7 years after her diagnosis. She was a great fighter and “didn’t want to leave the party” as those her knew her would attest. She is survived by her sister Pat Farmer Weil and a son and daughter. Dianna Nunley Miller passed away August 18, 2004. She was a great friend to all who knew her. She owned The Plant Gallery on Crenshaw in Torrance until she retired in 2002. She is survived by her brother, Don Nunley ’57, of Port Angeles, WA, two sons, one daughter and two grandchildren.

The North Hollywood High School Alumni association is incorporated non-profit organization, registered with the IRS and the Franchise Tax Board of California. All the Committee members are volunteers, no monies are spent on staff. PLEASE SEND ALL CHANGES OF ADDRESS TO LILLIAN LOST NOW FOUND Last month we had Robert Wells ’43, lost, well we are happy to report that he is living in Hereford, AZ with his wife Kathleen on the “Rafter W” ranch. You will not find Hereford, AZ on any map because it only has a quick-stop shop, a bar and two restaurants. Hereford is where the Clanton’s (“Gunfight at OK Coral) had their ranch west of the San Pedro River. Roberts’s ranch is east of the river. We are happy to have heard from Robert. Thanks for writing us such an interesting letter. MEMORY LANE ’32 ’42 ’43 ’44 ’45 ’46 ’49 ’55 ’56
