Find us on: CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Rationalizing our network AngelA MAncini As you are aware, the English Montreal School Board is in the process of looking at the rationalization of the network of our schools and centres. This periodic review is necessary to ensure that we are delivering the best possible educational services to our students in a pedagogically and financially sound manner. It is not an easy process for any school board to go through but it is necessary when the Board faces increased challenges in providing services to the students entrusted to our care. This period of reflection/consultation is not easy for anyone but, we are asking stakeholders to maintain their goodwill and cooperation throughout this period. The Long Range Planning Committee prepared scenarios for Council’s consideration. Through a series of resolutions we retained some to be sent out for consultation for possible maintenance or closure. In order to see all the documentation and to get more information on the entire process, I would invite you to visit our website (www.emsb.qc.ca) and click on the icon called “Consultation for Proposed Major School Changes 2012-2013.” It is important to note that the significance of the scenarios that were retained is that they are being sent out for consultation to elicit the thoughts of all stakeholders regarding the maintenance, closure or relocation of schools or centres. It is through the consultation process that the Council will be able to receive briefs and hear the opinions, ideas or new information that a school or centre’s community wants Council to be aware of before Council makes a decision.

Laurin Liu, a recent graduate of the EMSB's Royal West Academy, is officially sworn in by House Clerk Audrey O'Brien as the New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Parliament for Rivière-des-Mille-Îles. “Royal West has gotten me to where I am today because my teachers made me aware of the importance of social justice,” she remarked. “I am honoured to be serving in the House of Commons and will work hard to ensure that the interests of Canadian families come before the interests of big business.”
EMSB Career Fair Nov. 2 & 3 Focusing on life by RobeRt StockeR eMSb Director general Early on in the English Montreal School Board’s existence, 12 years ago to be more precise, the late John Szuber approached our departments of Student Services and Adult Education and Vocational Services (AEVS) about holding a fall Career Fair for our Secondary V students. The idea was to present such a program over a two day period at St. Pius X Adult Centre and Culinary Institute in Ahuntsic whereby students would participate in an auditorium information session and then spend time in a large kiosk area visiting tables

with different post secondary education options. Career Fair was a hit from the very beginning, Mr. Szuber, at the time the guidance counsellor at Marymount Academy and the very charismatic Hugh Adams, then the guidance counsellor at
Lester B. Pearson High School, were two of the key players in this endeavour along some of our senior management staff such as Lew Lewis of Student Services and Rosario Ortona in AEVS. Sadly, we lost Mr. Szuber to Continued on page 4 – see ‘EMSB DG’

EMSB CAREER EXPLORATION PROGRAM
Making your dream a reality by DAniel SMAjovitS While the Boy Scouts of America are not an option in the English Montreal School Board Career Exploration Program, their motto should be plastered on every application form. Be prepared. From soaring through the sky in the aviation industry with Flight Safety International to filming award winning stories about it with Apartment 11 Productions, the Career Exploration Program is meant to do just that: prepare each and every Secondary IV and V student for the bright and exciting future which awaits them. While planning their next 30 years at the tender age of 15 might seem farfetched for some students, ultimately, the educational choices in high school become the foundation for their future. With that in mind Tania Percio of the EMSB Student Services Department has coor dinated a program which allows every student to hop into their own
aviation training. For students with a keen interest in the aviation industry, spending a day up close and personal with pilots serves as an eye opener, not only exposing them to the basic requirements needed to merely step into a cockpit, but more importantly, to the level of commitment required which in flight, is the difference between life and death. Although Flight Safety International is perhaps the most extreme of placements, Jennifer Glasgow, an independent fashion designer and co-owner of Boutique General 54, kept students on the ground and opened up her doors to those with a keen eye for couture. Bringing students into her studio, Glasgow introduced them to the entire design process, from conception to sewing and finally into to her store, where after years of hard work, her designer clothes are, with her at the controls, flying off the shelves. Beauty in fashion is akin to creativity in design and students were able to experience this first
“We want to give students the opportunity to engage in practical work in the field of their choice.” Delorean and take their future for a test drive. “We want to give students the opportunity to engage in practical work in the field of their choice,” said Percio. “It’s one thing to read and dream about a career, but it’s totally different to be exposed to the rigors, responsibilities and environment for a whole day.” Such responsibilities take centre stage at Flight Safety International, a company which specializes in

the Concordia Stingers track suit worn by Dustin Traylen at Excellent Ice in Kirkland does not represent anything close to the latest in fashion trends, however, his athletic experience and advice is second to none. As far removed from aviation and design as possible, Traylen, an elite goaltender until a rash of injuries ended his career, opened up the doors of Excellent Ice to five students who shared the dream he had: playing in the National Hockey League. Providing them with a session of on-ice training as well as some meaningful discussion time, he explained that even the best prospect faces a steep up-hill climb before receiving his chance in the spotlight. Yet, for Cassandra Castronovo or Maxime Ianniciello, being in the spotlight isn’t their goal as both were able to experience the action behind the scenes as a sound engineer at MusiquePlus and a television director at Apartment 11 Productions respectively. For Cassandra and Maxime, their experience in the television industry only reaffirmed their desire to pursue their dreams. Spending the day at MusiquePlus, Cassandra did not stand by idly, but she assisted in a live musical performance as well as even learning some tricks of the trade when it comes to the recording, mixing and the remixing of sound.
Maxime’s visit to the award winning Apartment 11 Productions allowed him to spend time at both the head office and studio, truly opening his eyes to the entertainment world. Shadowing various professionals, his day took him from the editing room, past an endless line of awards and onto various meetings in preparation for weeks of on-set shooting. Although he was not allowed to yell action and cut while on set, Maxime did realize that the life of a director is much more than those two words, and like many of his peers, he can’t wait to make his dream a reality.
Whether or not the Career Exploration Program reaffirms that the path you’re on is for you or leads you in another direction, the opportunity is there for all students across the English Montreal School Board to have the chance to take a glimpse into their future, begin to write their own story and of course, make it come true. Apartment 11’s Finding Stuff Out will pemiere on TV Ontario in November. For more information log on to http://www.emsb.qc.ca/ en/services_en/pages/career exploration_en.asp.
MANCINI – cont’d from page 1 During this consultation period, it is important to note that the schools or centres operate as usual. Sending out a school or centre for consultation should not presume any kind of outcome. That is why parents are asked to remain true to their schools and to continue to support their school/centre as they always have. The consultation period will end in January 2012, when a decision will be made by the Council of Commissioners. The Administration and the Council of Commissioners understand how difficult this process is for the parents and students whose schools and centres have been affected by this consultation process. We would not engage in this process were it not absolutely necessary. Until then, your schools and centres look forward to your continued involvement. We ask you to continue to volunteer and work in partnership with your school or centre. Our School Board’s continued success rate is in large part due to the delivery of excellent pedagogical services and the collaboration and active participation of our parents in their child’s school life. Please let us not forget this during this difficult time of deliberation. I would invite us all to work together as we always have for the benefit of our students.

We also have the Career Exploration Program (CEP), which you can read more about on page 2 of this paper. The EMSB has held seven golf tournaments. All of the proceeds have gone to scholarships for a select number of high school and vocational training students who are continuing their studies in a post-secondary educational program. At the EMSB we place an emphasis on making sure that when students leave our system they are in a good position to make the most of the opportunities presented to them.

EMSB EXPRESS | vol. 14 | N o 1 | Fall 2011
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS
Automated notification system to be implemented At the start of the 2011-2012 academic year the EMSB will begin implementation of an automated notification system. This will allow EMSB administration, principals, and other delegated staff to send messages to your home or cell phone, and eventually email and text messages. The system will be used to communicate information such as school activities, special dates or events, emergency situations which include unexpected early dismissals, delayed school openings, school cancellations and others.
During the initial phase the system will be used for voice messaging only. The phone numbers must be updated to ensure that students receive prompt and accurate delivery of notifications. The second phase will see message delivery expanded to include email and text messages where the situation warrants. The school will inform families in advance when the decision to use email and text messaging is made. The intent is to enhance current communication methods (TV, radio, Twitter, Facebook) not replace them. Rest assured it will be used sparingly in appropriate situations only.
THE KEY BENEFITS OF THE AUTOMATED SYSTEM ARE:
5 Delivery of critical messages in minutes to keep parents informed and involved;
5 Quickly and broadly circulate accurate information avoiding rumors or misinformation;
5 Reduce the costs and labor for paper notices by sending calls instead, where appropriate;
5 Real-time, detailed, customized reports on mass calls.
5 Administrators will be able to provide facts related to incidents or school activity;
5 Easily target and notify broad groups or small subsets with custom call lists;
5 Ability to communicate important information from any phone and from any location even if it cannot be accessed such as if an evacuation occurs or the administrator is off site;
The effectiveness of the system relies on accurate contact information. Therefore the EMSB will be requesting that parents and students provide updated information on the following; home phone number, email address(es), cell phone number(s).
Prior to implementation at your school further information will be provided.

EMSB Honours its Volunteers by STUART NULMAN
1
2
VOLUNTEER OF DISTINCTION This year’s Volunteer of Distinction was Angie Bertone, a parent volunteer with the EMSB for 20 years. She began her time as a volunteer at Leonardo Da Vinci Elementary School (now Leonardo Da Vinci Academy) in RDP, as well as Vincent Massey Collegiate in Rosemount, and served on the governing boards of both schools. She also was chairman of the Region’s 2 and 3 parent committees, served on the governing board of the Advisory Committee on Special Education Services (ACSES), and was a director of the English Parents’ Committees Association (EPCA). She is currently a devoted parent volunteer at Paul VI High School in Ahuntsic and sits on the EMSB Council of Commissioners as one of its two parent commissioners. When she is not dedicating her time as an EMSB volunteer, Ms. Bertone works for Ultramar’s home heating division as a technical advisor and trains its customer service representatives. “What is a volunteer? A volunteer is someone who gives of oneself selflessly for a cause. This simple yet powerful statement, I believe, describes every single parent here tonight,” said Ms. Bertone as she accepted the Volunteer of Distinction Award at the event. “So many parents help out in our schools, helping in any way they can …and they do so willingly, happily and selflessly for the benefit of all our students.” Ms. Bertone also thanked her family – her sons Stephen and Christopher, future daughter-inlaw Stephanie and her husband Albert – for all their endless support during her 20 years as an EMSB volunteer. “My husband Albert has had all the patience in the world for all these years taking care of home and kids because he has always known what this means to me, except of course when I come home at 2 a.m. from a meeting.”
EVENT SPONSORS Along with La Capitale, the 2011 EMSB Volunteer Appreciation Night was proud to have the following companies as its major sponsors: Steve’s Music Store (www.stevesmusic.com), which has evolved into a world renowned music store and a major

Nearly 500 school volunteers and administrators, as well as senior management and commissioners, attended the 10th annual English Montreal School Board (EMSB) Volunteer Appreciation Evening last April 20 at the Plaza Volare of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ville St. Laurent. The event was held during National Volunteer Week under the theme of “Volunteers … Our Shining Stars!” Time and space did not allow the EMSB to honour all of its nearly 1,500 volunteers in person. Therefore, only those individuals who have volunteered for more than five years were in attendance. Volunteers with 15 or more years of service received a special EMSB Volunteer Night metal travel mug as a thank you gift. Several thousand copies of a commemorative program book were distributed to each school. The emcees for the evening were Michael J. Cohen from the EMSB and Global News anchor Jamie Orchard. La Capitale Financial Services was once again the title sponsor for this event. “For all that you have done to make our schools and centres shine, by helping them become thriving communities within themselves throughout the year (and for many years), you have certainly earned your star on the EMSB Walk of Fame,” said EMSB Director General Robert A. Stocker. “We take comfort in the fact that the EMSB universe is a very bright one, thanks to many brilliant stars that make up that universe … you, the volunteers.” “While they may not have appeared in an Oscar-winning movie, or a highly-rated TV show, our EMSB volunteers are certainly superstars in their own right throughout our schools and centres. How they help out and how much they help out is simply amazing – governing boards, the PPO, Home & School, our libraries, field trips, fundraising, tutoring and special events – each and every one of you play a major role towards the success that our schools and centres enjoy,” EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini told the audience at the event. Central Parents’ Committee Chairman Linda Perez added how “volunteering means you are setting a great example for your children. Your actions are concrete proof of the importance you place in their education. Your actions prove to them that they too can influence their lives. Your actions show them the importance of being part of a community.” Entertainment was provided by the Paul VI Choir. A recent addition to the special needs school’s curriculum, the choir was established to perform at public events and galas, in order to expose its student members to the public, as well as build a sense of self-
confidence and vocal expertise. They also get the opportunity to practice reading skills, vocal skills and the importance of teamwork that helps make them better individuals and better singers. The choir sang a short selection of songs at Volunteer Night, including “Blackbird” by The Beatles.

Annakin Slayd a hit at Leonardo Da Vinci Academy’s kindergarten graduation
Annakin Slayd shares a moment with some of the young grads.
The kindergarten classes of Leonardo da Vinci Academy in Rivière des Prairies had quite a surprise for special guest Annakin Slayd on the last day of school in June. Slayd, an emerging Montreal hip-hop artist and graduate of the English public school system, attended the Leonardo da Vinci Academy Kindergarten graduation ceremony. The four classes performed Go Publique! an original rap song and music video written by Slayd, and the signature video in the Quebec English School Board Association’s (QESBA) 2011 ad campaign promoting the province’s English public education system. Teachers Paola Casale, Monique Imbeau, Noreen Di Maio and Kelly Lee Bourget encouraged the students to learn the song. The students were presented with diplomas, gifts and a luncheon with their parents to celebrate their graduation into Grade 1. Slayd, who was treated like a visiting rock star, loved the experience. He hopes to undertake a tour of more EMSB schools during the 2011-12 academic year.

Daniel Blumer and Edward Hayes present some of the $100,000 in books, puzzles, dolls and accessories they donated to the EMSB to Assistant Director of Pedagical Services Christine Denommée.
GENEROUS DONATION Elementary schools across the EMSB will be gaining two new friends in storybook characters Gaëlle and Étienne, courtesy of a generous donation of over $100,000 in books, puzzles, dolls and accessories by local entrepreneur Edward Hayes. The donation, one of the largest of its kind ever made by an individual to the EMSB, is from the series Gaëlle: the Mysterious Secret of the Buttercups and will provide students with over 11,000 hard and soft cover books in English, French and Spanish. Accompanying the reading materials from the same series are: more than 750 puzzles, 3,000 dolls complete with 1,000 pieces of accessory clothing, and for students to bring home: 1,000 complete backpacks which come equipped with a cassette tape and book. “It’s been my absolute pleasure to be able to donate all these books, puzzles and dolls to the EMSB. I’m so excited to be fortunate enough to have the opportunity to give back to the community as it’s always something I look forward to doing,” said Mr. Hayes. “We’re so excited to have received this big donation,” added Christine Denommée, the Assistant Director of Pedagogical Services at the EMSB. “These books will be offered to all of our elementary schools and daycares for students and I know students will enjoy them for years to come.” using the LTK as an integral part of teaching, sustained over time, demonstrating an understanding of the underlying pedagogy of the LTK, encouraging to facilitate access to the software from home, engaging in professional development through attendance at various LTK workshops; actively participating in the LTK community by sharing experiences and/or teaching/learning materials and valuing and contributing to evidence on LTK effectiveness and implementation. The award was presented by Phil Abrami (Director, CSLP) to Ms Beccat at the Learning Toolkit International Institute. For the first time since 2007, the Quebec Scholastic Challenge was captured by a student from the EMSB as Alexander Spinali from LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent beat out students from across Quebec to take home the championship. The Scholastic Challenge is a contest for Grade 8
students, which is designed as an enrichment activity to stimulate their interest in knowledge, Alex Spinali thinking and learning. It has been offered across Canada since 1998. The online test consists of 100 questions across six categories: General Knowledge (food, art, sports, music, current events, entertainment, mythology, etc.), Language and Literature, History, Geography, Science and Math. Each year, schools across the EMSB invite many of their top-achieving students to participate in this contest.

EMSB AND THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL When a child is admitted to the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), be it for a short or long term stay, they can count on their educational needs being taken care of thanks to the EMSB, which has a team of four teachers assigned full-time there. Three other teachers from the Commission scolaire de Montréal (CSDM) work at the hospital as well to provide attention to French-speaking students. “The teachers at the Montreal Children's Peter Tsatoumas, Dan Novek, Christina Zarebski-Gasior Hospital really make a difference for our and Herb Treffeisen. patients who have to be hospitalized for a long period of time,” said Dr. Harvey Guyda, associate executive director of the hospital. This program, administered by the EMSB, provides educational services to children admitted to the medical wards and those attending the out patient clinics, namely hemodialysis and oncology. Services are provided for the entire range of medical situations, which are treated at the hospital. The school range covers kindergarten to Grade 11, both in regular and special needs programs. Hospital stays vary due to the transient population among them. Herb Treffeisen is the veteran of the crew. A native of Philadelphia, he has taught in the Montreal public school system for more than 40 years and spent half of that time at the MCH. He is responsible for high school students in the wards while Robert Ruffolo handles the elementary side. Ruffolo, who has been at the MCH for 15 years, recently had to take some time off and retired teacher Christina Zarebski-Gasior stepped in. Peter Tsatoumas and Dan Novak work with students on the psychiatry wards as part of the IPAS (Intensive Psychiatric Assessment Service) program. The CSDM teachers are Phillippe Proulx, Sylvie Dubuc and Katy Desrochers. For complete details on this wonderful service and plans to create a virtual classroom please go to www.emsb.qc.ca.

EMSB students Anthony Perna from Nesbitt Elementary School in Rosemount and Christine Nucciarone from Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard are presented with $500 Tony Licursi Bursaries prior to the Montreal Impact game against Puerto Rico June 29. The EMSB sold almost 2,000 tickets for the match. Pictured with the students are EMSB Immediate Past Chairman and Commissioner Dominic
Spiridigliozzi and Impact Executive Vice-President Richard Legendre. Anthony is a Grade 5 French immersion student who is described as sensitive, respectful and always ready to help out. As a baby, he was hospitalized for almost a year when a bacteria attacked part of his right shoulder bone. With medication and the help of devoted doctors who performed a successful surgery, his bone was reconstructed and this misadventure left nothing more than a few scars. He was really strong and courageous. Over the years, he has put an emphasis on athletics and his education, so much so that off the soccer pitch, Nesbitt has become a tertiary home to him. His thirst for learning and passion for soccer has led him to develop a strong desire to visit Italy, the home of his grandparents. The Tony Licursi Bursary will finally enable him to realize his dream of visiting his ancestral home this fall. Christine is a Secondary V student and has always achieved above average, honour roll grades while dedicating herself to participate in various school and community sports and activities. “Sports have always been my passion as I not only play for my community, but for my school as well,” she says. “My dedication towards sports has allowed me to develop school spirit, responsibilities as well as leadership qualities among my peers. Nevertheless, no matter how important my athletics are, I know that my academics are, and should remain, my primary concern.” For the complete press release go to www.emsb.qc.ca.
