THE SAINT THOMAS’ FUND This year, we chose to rename the Annual Fund to The Saint Thomas’ Fund. We believe the name change reflects our unwavering commitment to furthering the special, close-knit community we have at STE. The Saint Thomas’ Fund supports all that makes STE an outstanding environment: exceptional academics, superior arts programs, dominant athletic programs, and a growing technology program. When you make a gift to The Saint Thomas’ Fund, you make an impact on every member of our community.
OUR MISSION Since 1955, our mission has been to form honorable men and women through a classical education grounded in a Christ-centered world view. The Advancement Office is deeply grateful for the generous gifts and support during the 2013-2014 school year. The fiscal calendar for Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School is September 1 to August 31. LETTER FROM HEADMASTER On behalf of the students and faculty of Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School, I want to thank you for making the 2013-2014 Saint Thomas’ Fund a great success. Your continued generosity allows us to provide our students with continued excellence in academics, arts, and athletics. The generosity shown by this community allows our students to flourish and excel in the myriad classes and programs offered by STE. This past year we were thrilled to win the 3A division of the Henderson Cup for the second time in three years. This award, which is given by the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) to the top schools in the state, once more demonstrates our scholastic, artistic, and athletic distinction. When I became the headmaster nine years ago, one of my goals was to develop a culture of philanthropy at STE. We created an advancement office, and our inaugural annual fund drive attracted 141 donors who gave approximately $81,000. From those humble beginnings, our participation rates and yearly giving levels have increased. Last year, we had 650 donors pledge $363,000! Your donations directly impact the students and their education. When new families discover STE, they feel like they’ve found the hidden jewel of Houston. Of course, I agree with that sentiment, but STE is a jewel only because it has such a loving, devoted, and supportive community of teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, and alumni. You all believe in our mission, and you support it in countless ways — helping with your students’ homework (as long as you can!), volunteering, and donating to The Saint Thomas’ Fund. For 60 years, we have remained true to our founder’s vision of providing a truly outstanding Christian, classically based education. If you attended my presentation at one of this year’s parents’ nights, you know I am completely committed to the deep roots of STE. We’ve produced intellectually well-rounded, articulate students who graduate with a breadth of practical knowledge and critical thinking that distinguishes them from their peers. One of my greatest pleasures being the headmaster of STE is greeting the students as they arrive at school each morning. The young ones are full of enthusiasm, almost unable to contain their excitement as they cross Jackwood with their parents in tow. As the older students arrive, well let’s just say, they may not be as enthusiastic, but they are still congenial and content, for they know they are receiving an amazing education at a beautiful campus with caring, dedicated teachers. Your contributions to The Saint Thomas’ Fund are a big factor in the educational success and well-being of our students. As always, I am grateful and humbled by your support of our students.

LETTER FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD CHAIRMAN On behalf of the school board of Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Church and School, thank you for your continued support of The Saint Thomas’ Fund. This fund provides so much enrichment for our educational environment. From our students’ learning to our faculty and staff’s continuing education, STE is a significantly richer place to learn because of your support. As always, STE continues to acquit itself well. We have seen tremendous academic achievements, remarkable musical accomplishments, state championships (and near misses), and other wonderful successes. STE has a talented group of teachers and fantastic staff. We have wonderful class offerings, grounded in the classical model of education, that prepare our young people for college and life. It’s an exciting place to be right now, and the energy is palpable. As a relatively new member of our family, the quality of our students — not just academically, but spiritually, socially, athletically, and all other manners of being — has been striking. Our students go to outstanding schools and engage in outstanding work, but the most important aspect is that they are outstanding people. They are people who, in times of plenty and times of difficulty, are grounded in a faith that gives them endurance, joy, compassion, and love. This is the STE difference. I look forward to continuing to work with the school board and our wonderful headmaster, Mike Cusack. We are committed to providing more resources for our school. We are committed to prayerfully stewarding the resources God has blessed us with and applying them in the most effective and efficient way possible. We are committed to expanding opportunities to learn and grow. Most of all, we are committed to the students God has placed in our charge. God bless you. THE SAINT THOMAS’ FUND The Saint Thomas’ Fund is the largest fundraising effort for the school and provides direct funding for school programming and enhancements that tuition alone does not cover. Whether it’s new technology in our classrooms or new curriculum initiatives, every student benefits from The Saint Thomas’ Fund every day! THE LEADERSHIP CIRCLE BY GIVING LEVEL
The STE Leadership Circle, created in 2005, amassed 13 donors in its first year. Membership in the STE Leadership Circle is offered to donors who give $1,500 or more to The Saint Thomas’ Fund, and it continues to grow each year, with this year reaching 80 members. Leadership gifts make up a large percentage of our total dollars raised each year and is vital in creating a strong annual giving program. STE would not be able to reach its fundraising goals without the generous support of our STE Leadership Circle donors. Thank you!

We are proud to be a part of STE because it’s like a second family. I attended STE from kindergarten to 12th grade, and my experience helped shape who I am today. KILTS & CLUBS GOLF CLASSIC The 2014 Kilts and Clubs Golf Classic took place on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Wildcat Golf Club. For the first time in tournament history we had a winner of the hole-in-one contest. STE dad, Gilbert Legaspi, hit a hole-in-one on hole eight and won a brand new Lexus from Sterling McCall Lexus. When you give, your impact doesn’t end with your donation — it begins. CASH GIFTS You may make your tax-deductible gift with cash, a check or any major credit card. GIFTS OF APPRECIATED ASSETS Many people choose to give stock to The Saint Thomas’ Fund. You may receive an income tax deduction for the full market value of the appreciated stock donated. PROGRAMS ENTRY PLAZA PROJECT The Entry Plaza project allows past, current and future generations to leave their footprint at STE, while contributing to campus beautification efforts. Naming opportunities are available on benches, trees, brick pavers and though general donations. Monetary gifts and personalized items may be made in honor of, or in memory of a loved one, special teacher, mentor, friend, or to commemorate a special occasion or event. ENDOWMENT FUND Established in 2009, the STE Endowment Fund provides donors the opportunity to ensure the school’s long-term success. A healthy endowment eases pressure on the school’s operating budget, provides financial stability in the events of unforeseen circumstances, and allows administrators to pursue initiatives that enhance the school’s ability to be a leader in education. Additionally, gifts help STE attract and retain students through financial aid programs, while providing faculty and staff with educational programs.

ENTRY PLAZA UPDATE Entry Plaza construction was completed in the summer of 2013. Our STE community supported the project by donating money towards personalized pavers, trees, plaques, and benches. Thank you to every family who has adopted this project. The primary goals of the Entry Plaza were to create a more inviting entry onto our campus and to showcase a space that tells the story of STE. Engraved pavers include names of current teachers and students, as well as teachers and students from years past. They include names of people who helped build STE, and names of those who help keep it alive today. It is our hope that every STE community member takes part in the plaza. Pavers are still available. If you would like to see your name or the name of a child or a loved one in the plaza, please donate today! Be a part of STE history and leave your permanent mark in the Entry Plaza.
