We spent a lot of time in 2008 solidifying

our work around The New 3Rs: Rights,

Respect, and Responsibility. Within our

organization, our staff and board members began using these terms to frame our

work. Externally within communities, we

used this language to explain our services

and mission. In this, our 2008 Annual Report, you will see the 3Rs philosophy incorporated throughout.

The question for all of us is: How will we know when we’re successful?

When The New 3Rs has achieved its ideal:

 Parents, families, teachers, community leaders, policy makers, and opinion leaders will be able to talk about sexuality in a natural way, and will be committed to open, honest communication with young people.  A fourth R – Research – will be the basis for selecting programs and strategies. Personal values and morals regarding sexual decisions will be respected and addressed within families and faith communities.

 Comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education will be provided. It will be standardized, expected and welcomed. It will be available through multiple, easily accessible channels of communication.  Contraception, sexual protection, and reproductive health services will be universally accessible and affordable.

 Young people will have a voice in matters pertaining to their sexual health. Young people will be equipped to make informed, thoughtful and healthy decisions about sex; they will automatically think about protecting themselves and their partners if and when they choose to have sex.  The media will convey sexually responsible messages – in terms of both what it chooses to cover and how it chooses to cover it.  Prevention efforts will prove successful. Unintended pregnancies will be reduced to the point that the abortion debate will be greatly diminished.

Planned Parenthood activists and grassroots leaders have worked diligently to make certain that Washington remains one of the most progressive states in the nation regarding reproductive rights and access.

In 2008, we expanded affordable access to reproductive health care in our five fullservice clinics. This ensured that residents from across our region were empowered to make responsible decisions.

Out of respect for our patients, we have continued to streamline our approach to customer service, from our agency-wide call center to our Health Care Assistants. Time spent in the waiting room decreased significantly, and patient surveys have proven an effective tool in improving the way we work with our clients.

The day after the Roundtable training, supporters from around the state traveled to Olympia to reach out to newly elected officials as well as long-time friends about ADVOCACY: Gaining Momentum the importance of funding health care ADVOCACY: Gaining services that PPCWMomentum offers in our communities.

Most of our clinical services are provided on a sliding fee scale based on income. Due to our overarching emphasis of the right to make reproductive health choices, Planned Parenthood of Central Washington implemented several payment plans to guarantee that lack of funds does not deter clients from seeking health care.

Grant funding secured a second year in the Tri-Cities, and led the way to the initiation of new councils in Ellensburg, Walla Walla and Mabton. In 2008, teen leaders volunteered more than 300 hours in their communities. The teens’ goals were to prevent the spread of HIV and STIs, decrease teen dating violence, promote parent-child communication, and raise awareness about unintended teen pregnancy.

A generous grant from the Yakima Valley Community Foundation allowed PPCW to develop a culturally appropriate outreach project called Promotoras Comunitarias. Working with La Casa Hogar, PPCW recruited five Latinas to be trained as reproductive health promoters for the Yakima Latino/a Community. PPCW Community Health Educators were invited by The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to join a statewide cadre of professional trainers as part of the Comprehensive Sexual Health Education movement. As part of their certification, they were charged with training local area teachers best classroom practices for comprehensive sexual health education. The educators also introduced these teachers to evidence-based materials to help them meet the needs of their students.
