MARCH WORSHIP SERVICES
!"#$%&'()%"*%+,-.,/,%."%+0"%1)'(%.$%23'--4% here, and during this month we look forward to the holiday of Purim! I always recall the Purims of my youth as being a time of joy and frivolity. The Purim carnivals, the hamentashen, the Megillah readings and the Purim Shpiels all heightened the fun of this season. But what I also remember were the masks.
March 6 & 7 Torah Portion Haftarah 6:45 p.m. 10:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m.
Kee Tissa | Exodus 30:11-34:35 I Kings 18:1-39 Family Shabbat Service – Samson Sanctuary Saturday Shabbat Service – Samson Sanctuary Bar Mitzvah – Michael Spector Saturday Shabbat Service with Kiddush Luncheon – Kesselman Chapel
For a time I was scared of the masks. It was always a little disturbing not to see what lies behind the makeup or the pressed plastic. But as time rolled on and I grew in years, I started to enjoy wearing the masks. One year I could be a hero, another year a villain, and sometimes something in-between. It became enjoyable for a time to take on the personas, or the identities of something “other”than my true identity. The fact that we dress up on Purim underscores the brilliance of our tradition.
March 13 & 14 Torah Portion Vayakhel-Pekude | Exodus 35:1-40:38; Numbers 19:1-22 Haftarah Ezekiel 36:16-38 7:30 p.m. Shabbat Service – Samson Sanctuary 10:00 a.m. Saturday Shabbat Service – Samson Sanctuary Bar Mitzvah – Eli Finder 10:00 a.m. Saturday Shabbat Service with Kiddush Luncheon – Kesselman Chapel
The Megillah reading is part of our story and is eternally relevant. There are villains who are intent on our destruction and their own personal gain. There are ethnic politics at play and looming genocide. There are hidden motives, betrayals and subterfuges. There are questions of loyalties, and hidden pasts and identities. There are issues of gender, seduction and power. And there are questions about the manifestation or lack thereof of God. In reviewing my last sentences it is clear that our Megillah could just as easily be superimposed as the issues of our day.
March 20 & 21 Torah Portion Vayikra | Leviticus 1:1-5:26; Numbers 28:9-15; Exodus 12:1-20 Haftarah Ezekiel 45:16-46:18 7:30 p.m. Shabbat Service – Samson Sanctuary 10:00 a.m. Saturday Shabbat Service – Samson Sanctuary Bar Mitzvah – Benjamin Hersh 10:00 a.m. Saturday Shabbat Service with Kiddush Luncheon – Kesselman Chapel March 27 & 28 Torah Portion Tzav | Leviticus 6:1-8:36 Malachi 3:4-24 Haftarah 7:30 p.m. MCRC Shabbat Service – Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun 10:00 a.m. Saturday Shabbat Service with Kiddush Luncheon – Kesselman Chapel
We wear masks. We all do. We also fear what lies behind the masks of others. Though the seeds of this exploration are planted when we are children, laughing and enjoying the carnivals and plays, the hope is that as we get older we can explore these relevant themes in new and developing ways in adulthood. So I’m so pleased to share with you that this Erev Purim (Wednesday, March 4, 7 to 8:30 p.m.), we will enjoy “A Purim Carnevale”— a masked service and Megillah reading for adults where we will discuss the masks we all wear as Jews, as friends and as family members. Do we wear those masks or do we take them off in order for others to see our “true selves.” We act in accordance with the medieval Italian practice of wearing a “maschere”— a mask, expressing who we are or, who we are not. Wear any mask which pleases you; or do not wear a mask at all. It is a deliciously interesting topic — but not as rich as the delicious “antipasto” appetizers, hamentaschen, desserts and "&,%523,%$6.(."$7%8&.9&%:,,6%0$%-./,-4%.3%"&,%$6.(."%*;%%?,% happy it’s Adar!
The Next Chapter with Rabbi Noah Tuesdays, resuming March 3, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. At the completion of the Five Books of Moses, the Israelites stand ready to enter the Promised Land. Moses, our leader, will not be making the journey with the Israelites into the land of Canaan and the mantle of leadership is now passed on to Joshua. In this class, we will study the next chapter!
