RCIA: If you are interested, or an adult you know is interested, in the Catholic faith, please contact a priest or call the rectory for more information. Celiac Disease: Special hosts are available. Please see a priest in the sacristy before Mass. Our Mission: St. Catherine of Siena Parish is a Roman Catholic community established in Norwood, MA in 1890. Responding to our baptismal call to holiness, we seek to live the teachings of Christ in the Roman Catholic tradition through worship, education, service and evangelization. All are welcome in Christ! “…To those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints with all who are invoking the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place… Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to God continuously for you because of the grace of God that has been given to you in Christ Jesus. By that grace, in all things, you have become wealthy in him… He too will strengthen you, even until the end, without guilt…” Introduction of First Letter of Saint Paul to Corinthians

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Making Time for the Lord As I sat in the rectory chapel Tuesday morning trying to do some spiritual reading, my attention span was particularly short. I was driven to distraction by the bells ringing across the street, but I kept at it. The book I was reading was The Curé D’Ars on the life of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests. It just so happened that in the very chapter I was reading, the author began to speak about the bells that tolled the hour in the Saint’s parish, and what would happen in response. These bells didn’t drive to distraction; they served as a reminder. As was the custom throughout the Church, at the hours of 6 a.m., 12 Noon, and 6 p.m., the faithful would stop whatever they were doing and pray the Angelus. My conscience was a bit stung, because since leaving the seminary, I have often forgotten to maintain this worthy devotion. And worthy it is, to stop whatever work or recreation one is engaged in to honor the great mystery of the Incarnation, the coming of God among us as a man like us in all things but sin. It’s fitting that the cause of our redemption should be recalled throughout our daily lives with gratitude and prayer. And the Blessed Mother is there to pray with us and for us to the Divine Son she bore. The Hail Mary, which makes up the connective tissue of the Angelus, directs us to Jesus through Mary - ad Iesum per Mariam. The practice of praying the Angelus can help all of us to add some definite structure to our prayer life while increasing our love of God, instilling greater devotion to his Mother, and spurring us on to further meditation on the mysteries of our redemption. There’s also something challenging about the Angelus because time doesn’t wait for anyone. Being faithful to the Angelus will necessarily force you to give public witness to the Gospel. If you’re standing in line at the Post Office at noontime, would you make the Sign of the Cross and take a minute to pray? If you’re pushing your cart through the supermarket when 6 p.m. strikes, would you have the courage to stop right there and begin, “The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary…”? The desire for human respect is a terrible thing which tempts us to withhold the honor due to God, or prevents us from doing the virtuous thing when the World would only respond with ridicule or mockery. But what if we all prayed anyway? We might find we’re not the only one in line to buy stamps, or coming to a stop on the sidewalk, who’s suddenly saying a Hail Mary. And it might just encourage someone who’s been away from the Church to start praying anew. It happened every day in Ars, and parishes around the world, for centuries… why not in Norwood today? The Angelus The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary: And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary… Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary… And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary… Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray. Pour forth we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA The Sacrament of Penance: Speaking on reconciliation, Fr. William Casey, Superior General of the Fathers of Mercy, reminds us that confession, the forgotten Sacrament, is the ordinary means for the forgiveness of mortal sins after baptism and a veritable treasury of graces and spiritual strength for us in our daily struggles against temptation and sin. Discover how this Sacrament can transform your life if you allow it! This CD and others are available at the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk at the front entrance of the church. I have extended an invitation to Rev. Joseph Gosselin MS to come to our parish this weekend, July 16-17. Fr. Gosselin will speak to you about the work being done by Unbound (previously known as CFCA), and how this provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor. Founded by lay Catholics, Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 20 developing countries since 1981 -- empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their potential. Unbound’s unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the U.S. who cares about and encourages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of every person in their local community. Please join me in welcoming Fr. Gosselin to St. Catherine’s. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Donohoe Wedding Banns Bann I:

Please remember our beloved deceased, especially Mary A. Bodge and Scolastica “Sally” Civitarese who were buried from our parish this week. May they rest in peace.

The Gospel account of Martha and Mary is a wonderful story and a great way to begin a discussion of contemplation and action. How wonderful to sit at Jesus’ feet. Sharing work (‘pitching in’) is good too. Mention this story to a friend or family member and see where the conversation leads. As for the first reading, Abraham, saw three men nearby, “… he ran … to greet them” Not only did he greet them warmly, he provided water to bathe their feet, Sarah prepared a meal, and he “waited on them”. We call this Radical Hospitality, an attitude that many parishes are intentionally adopting. Every person in a pew should be a greeter, yes, even YOU. We are all called to welcome the stranger in our pews and reach out to assist the newcomer.

Join Us for Vacation Bible School! Children ages 4 (potty trained)-10 (entering grade 5 in the fall of 2016) are invited to join us for a Deep Sea Discovery Vacation Bible School program this summer. Office, on the parish website, or at the entrances of the church.

Attention Parents: If children need to use the restrooms in the sacristy before, during or after Mass, we strongly suggest that an adult accompany them. St. Catherine’s is a very safe and nurturing environment and we want to take every precaution to protect our children. Thank you. LOST AND FOUND

What’s in a Name? Road Named for Monsignor Ryan and Kindergarten Teacher Ms. Sullivan One way a community can pay tribute to local heroes and to insure that they go down in history is to have streets named in their honor. The opportunity to designate the road between St. Catherine of Siena Middle School and the Parish Rectory for some local “rock stars” came up at the school’s live auction at the Annual Gala and Auction in April. The winner of the “Name That Street” prize asked that the street sign read “Monsignor Ryan Way” on one side and “Sullivan Way” on the other. Monsignor Paul Ryan has been a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston for nearly 60 years and a Priest-in-Residence at St. Catherine of Siena Parish for the past 10 years and Ms. Joan Sullivan has been a teacher at the school for nearly 30 years and was recently nominated for Norwood Teacher of the Year. In a dedication ceremony held on June 2 attended by students from all classes at the school, Mary Beth Cox, director of advancement, unveiled the street sign to a round of cheers and applause. As great an honor as it was to have a road sign named for their teacher, Kindergarten students had a slight worry: “It might get confusing, though, if someone wants to send them a letter.” Here are some photos that memorialize the event.
