Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!
From the Pastor’s Pen Holy Communion—Holy Community I read that one of Pope Emeritus Benedict’s favorite words is Communio, which summarizes what we as Jesus’ Church are all about: ♦
Come together for the Holy Communion in Jesus who makes us one with Himself and all His sisters and brothers.
♦
Become a Holy Community that reaches out to and cares for all.
Today let us praise and thank Jesus for giving Himself to us in such a beautiful way. I want to thank each and every one of you and all of you collectively for making our celebration of the Eucharist truly the high point of my week, and I hope yours as well. Thanks to each of you who choose to come and worship with us every weekend. Thanks to our Greeters and Ushers who so hospitably and warmly welcome us and assist us. Thanks to all our excellent Music Ministers who help us raise our voices and hearts to God. Thanks to each of you who join us in our singing from your heart with joy and love. Thank you to all our Servers who sacrifice their other activities for Jesus. Thank you to our gifted Lectors who proclaim God’s Word and our Intercessions so prayerfully. Thank you to our Holy Communion Ministers who so reverently offer us the Body and Blood of Christ. Thanks to each and all of you who so prayerfully and reverently join in the prayers of the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—and then live the Real Presence of Jesus all week. Thanks for all of you who come early to pray and not leave early! And also thanks those who come to pray with Jesus during Eucharistic Adoration the third Monday, Lifeline Adoration the fourth Thursday, Latino Nocturnal Adoration the third Saturday. “We should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some, but encourage one another, as you see the day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:25 (And a reminder to bow your head before stepping forward to receive Holy Communion. This is our conscious recognition of our Lord Jesus—Truly Present in
His Body and Blood and say aloud AMEN from your heart to Jesus and the whole Body of Christ.) And THANK YOU, JESUS, for making us Your One Body and One in Your Blood and poured out for the salvation of all.
How Important is Sunday? Sunday is the center of Christian time, for on Sunday we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection, and every Sunday is a miniature Easter. If Sunday is disregarded or abolished, only workdays are left in the week. Man, who was created for joy, degenerates into a workhorse and a mindless consumer. We must learn on earth how to celebrate properly, or else we will not know what to do in heaven. Heaven is an endless Sunday.
Homeboy Industries Founder to Speak in St. Louis How do you hope to bring peace and respect to a community torn apart? “If you seek to build a sense of kinship in a community where there is no ‘them’ - there is just ‘us!’” says Jesuit Father Greg Boyle. “If you have kinship, you are going to have justice. If you have kinship, you are going to have peace.” Boyle is scheduled to give a keynote address on June 29 in St. Louis. His is the author of Tattoos on the Heart, detailing his work with gangs in Los Angeles, and the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries, a non-profit organization that provides jobs and work experience for former gang members. He has been interviewed and featured on 60 Minutes, Fresh Air with Terry Gross and in many news reports. Recently, he commented on police-community relations in an op-ed piece in the Los Angeles Times (April 30, 2015). While not referring directly to Ferguson, Missouri, his comments are directed toward many cities in the United States. “There is no such thing as a bad cop, only disturbing and dominant copy thinking that will invariably lead to excessive force and tragic outcomes,” he said. His column was entitled, “The problem with good guys vs. bad guys policing” and echoed the need to get past the “us and them” attitude and work towards building kinship. “There is just ‘us.’” Boyle’s keynote address is scheduled at 7pm on June 29 at the Airport Marriott in St. Louis through July 2, and is open to the public. There will be no
The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ—June 7, 2015 charge for admission, but seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Hotel parking, at a reduced rate of $5, is also limited, so car-pooling is suggested. For more information: http://www.uscatholicpriests.org.
Prayer of the Week O Lord Jesus Christ, You who have given us Your precious Body and Blood to be our food and drink, grant that through frequent reception of You in the Holy Eucharist, we may be strengthened in mind and body to do Your holy will. Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, have mercy on us.
Joke of the Week
Interracial Dialogue Join us on Tuesday, June 9 at 7:00pm at Ark of Safety Christian Church on Hawk’s Nest Drive at I-70. Parishioners from Borromeo and Fr. Don have met twice with members of Ark of Safety and Pastor Harry, once at each church, and wish to invite anyone interested in furthering interracial dialogue and fellowship to join us. Our first two gatherings have been most delightful and rewarding. All are welcome.
Annual Catholic Appeal Report Thanks to so many who have generously pledged $54,749 for so many important ministries of our Church. We need a few more Borromeo members to pledge so we can reach our goal of $68,459. Thanks and God love you!
The doctor’s office called to confirm an appointment, and the husband answered. “Hello, may I speak with Anna?” “Who?” he said. “Anna.” “Santa?” “No, Anna.” “Who is this?” “This is the doctor’s office calling for Anna.” “Who?” “The doctor’s office calling for Anna!” “Oh, Anna,” he said. “You better talk to me; Anna’s hard of hearing.” Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family! A Holy Community through Holy Communion. Your Brother in Jesus,

WE THANK EACH OF YOU
for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others. “Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them Mark 14: 23 and they all drank from it.” Jesus, the perfect steward, gave thanks, just before He gave Himself to us completely for our salvation. He offers us the chance to drink from His cup. In the Eucharist, we meet Christ personally and, if we listen to Him, we know what drinking from His cup means for each of us. Often, it means our own sacrifice—giving up some of our time, talent and treasure to do His work on earth.
We pray that, through the Eucharist, we find the nourishment and strength to live as good Christian stewards.

Gospel Reflection Mark describes for his community the words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper. Scholars believe that the words are more an attempt on Mark’s part to help his early Christian community understand the Eucharist than they are the actual words spoken by Jesus. Still they help us understand that Jesus was leaving the physical company of the apostles, and he gave them a way of remembering him through bread and wine, his body and blood. Much of this reading is about sharing a meal with those we love. In today’s crazy world, with all the ways we run our children and ourselves ragged, one of our greatest priorities should be mealtime. Make this a time of day when family members feel safe to share their dreams, joys, and struggles of the day. As often as possible, allow enough time so that the meal is not rushed. Try to have all members together at least for one meal each day. Even special touches such as flowers, soft music or lit candles help create an atmosphere that encourages fellowship. Most families have lost loved ones, relatives, or close friends in death. Consider who some of these people are in your family’s experience and share ways that you still remember that person. Perhaps you have photographs, some of their belongings, or beautiful memories. Make a connection to these memories and the memory Jesus left with his disciples and us. Allow each person to share ways he/she experienced Jesus’ presence today. 1.
Meals are a special time people share with one another. My favorite meal to share is… 2. Jesus gave up his life for me. Someone else who makes sacrifices for me is… 3. As part of the Body of Christ, I share what he gave by…

The Gift of Family
“Do not forget to pray for families.”
Pope Francis, January 16, 2015
Today as we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ let us pray for those who are hungry, malnourished and starving.
From the moment as children when we first learn to pray, our prayers are for our families. These people, who sometimes share bonds of blood and other times bonds of relationship and choosing, hold a special place in our lives for reasons nearly impossible to explain. They are just there and inseparable from us, and so we seek God’s protection for them.
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Have them call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help those who are hungry. Please call Joyce Cain at 636-448-2021 for more information about how you can help.
Families are pure gifts. Like other blessings in our lives— friends, health and sustenance of all kinds we can work for our families but can never earn them. Gifts are never earned, they can only be accepted. When we ask for blessings and protection for our families, we place ourselves before the Giver of all life with gratitude, secure in knowing that only in God’s hands can our loved ones ever really be safe.
Help those in need within our parish and neighborhood, regardless of faith, by making a monetary gift, donating clothing or household goods to a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store, or donating your vehicle for a tax deduction. For more information on how you can make a difference in the lives of others, call 636-925-1616. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic lay organization dedicated to providing person-to-person service to those in need.
Lord, keep my family safe and in your sight. Steve Givens

8th Grade Chastity Contest Winning Essay Tommy Broniec The virtue of chastity is a defining way in which we should live our lives as Catholics. If we live it, it protects our spiritual life and our physical life. It shows love and passion to God that directs us to live a divine life to our holy death. By honoring the vow of chastity we fulfill God’s direction prior to marriage. In doing this, children are not born out of wedlock and the chance of abortion is much less because we follow the teachings of Jesus. Jesus has taught us to love all of God’s children and bring them up in His image. If you follow Jesus’ teaching you live with good morals which enables you to have a healthy lifestyle and lead a productive life. You are also a good representative as one of God’s children who is a positive role model for others to follow. By setting a good example, it affects and influences others around you. We have a duty to fulfill this virtue until marriage. This virtue shows God that we trust in Him and are willing to follow that path He has made for us. The virtue of chastity protects us as role models of Christ. It leads us on a path where we honor not only God but those we choose to live with the rest of our lives. We guide our lives according to the Commandments and we live the virtues that God has set out for us. I take chastity very seriously in my life and others should as well.

Four Signs Seminar at Immaculate Conception-Dardenne
**Help us to not turn away any child for lack of funds**
Sign up today for the November 21 Four Signs Seminar at Immaculate Conception in Dardenne! The presenter will be Dr. Allen Hunt, author of Confessions of a Mega Church Pastor (Hunt is a convert to Catholicism).
Parents have the hardest job in the world, and young parents in our parish community need our loving support more than ever before. Besides struggling to provide the material needs of their children, they are dedicated to handing on their rich heritage of the Catholic faith. To provide financial assistance for those parents who cannot afford the full cost of tuition in our school, we appeal to you, their parish family members, to consider a contribution through our parish Help-A-Student program. When you support this program, you are giving youngsters a chance to strengthen their faith in God and prepare themselves for their future. We maintain complete confidentiality when receiving and distributing financial aid from our Help-AStudent Program. Parents willing to support the standards and requirements of the school, and participate in parish and school projects and activities, will be helped to give their children the excellent academic and religious education available in St. Charles Borromeo School. Please consider a gift today, perhaps in memory of a loved one, or in gratitude for the many blessings in your life. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.
Our lives change when our habits change. Discover how to master the four signs of a Dynamic Catholic to reenergize your life and your parish. Get your tickets today! ABOUT THE FOUR SIGNS Based on Matthew Kelly's best-selling book, The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic, The Four Signs event delves
into the four life-giving spiritual habits of engaged Catholics. What if each day, every Catholic prayed for ten minutes and read five pages of a great Catholic book? What if every Catholic gave one percent more of their income to their Church this year and did one thing each week to intentionally share God's message with others? The Catholic Church would be staggeringly different from the Church today. But how do we get Catholics to take on these life-changing habits? Join us for one of The Four Signs events and discover how to master the four signs of a Dynamic Catholic in your life. Tickets $20 per person which includes workshop materials.
