OUTLOOK Head coach Dr. Gavin White is in his 29th season at the helm of the men’s rowing program at Temple University. The Owls enter the 2008 season after a respectable second place finish at two huge regattas; the Dad Vail Regatta and the SIRA Championships. Coach White hopes to lead his Varsity 8 shell to the title in both of these events this year. The Owls return their coxswain and five of the eight rowers from the shell that received the silver in the two prestigious events last year. Temple loses Dante Cammarata and Pete Gostling to graduation this year while junior James Harding is currently training with the Australian national team. Replacing those three in the Varsity 8 are Chris Schwartz, Justin Allphin and Tom Masterson. Allphin’s tall, thick stature is one that makes him a valuable replacement according to Coach White, “At 6' 7" 240 lbs. it’s hard not to take advantage of his power.” Allphin is among those that White expects to make a difference in their first season with the program. Allphin had never rowed prior to September of last year but he is expected to make a big difference in a Varsity 8 that Coach White says is the biggest that he’s had in years. Fellow sophomores Pat Curran and Tom Masterson are also expected to make an impact on the success of the Varsity 8.

Captains this year are Rory Roberts and Don Powers. Roberts coxed the Varsity 8 last year while Don Powers was in the bow position. These two were an integral part in last year’s Varsity 8 shell that had excellent results. They will hope to lead the team to even better performances, looking for a first place finish in the Dad Vail Regatta and the SIRA Championships. Coach White is proud of many other upperclassmen leaders as well, “Seniors Bob Protesto, Chris Schwartz, Thomas Haubrich, Sam Cunningham, and Nick Vlahos have been impressive in leading the way for our younger guys.” The expected lineup in the Varsity 8 boat is as follows; Christ Schwartz (1 seat), Pat Curran (2 seat), Nick Vlahos (3 seat), Justin Allphin (4 seat), Don Powers (5 seat), Tom Haubrich (6 seat), Bob Protesto (7 seat), Tom Masterson (stroke) and Rory Roberts (coxswain). Heading into the season the Owls are the defending champions of the Murphy Cup and Knecht Cup where they will hope to repeat. Coach White has his eyes set on the SIRA Championships and the Dad Vail Regatta gold medals as he expects the boat to be very capable of bringing home those titles, “If our younger and stronger guys continue to develop we could be quite fast this season.”

TEMPLE CREW

Dr. Gavin R. White is in his 29th season as head coach of the Temple University men's crew program. Under his guidance, the Owls have earned international distinction with seven invitations to Great Britain's premiere regatta, the renowned Royal Henley Regatta (1983-86, 1989, 1990, 1994). In Temple's seven appearances, White has led the Owls to the Grand Finale once (1984) and into the quarterfinals four times (1985, 1990, 1993,1994). White continues the city of Philadelphia's tradition of quality rowing this season with an impressive roster of athletes. His boats have won 15 of the last 16 Dad Vail Regatta varsity eight titles. The Owls had won 13 consecutive titles from 1989-2001 prior to placing second to Dowling in 2002. After serving as an assistant for three seasons, White became only the second head coach in Temple crew history. He succeeded Tom "Bear" Curran in 1979 and has been the men's coach ever since, with the exception of the 1984-85 season when he took a sabbatical to work on a doctoral degree, which he received from Temple in 1986. White also holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from Temple and a master's degree in physical education from the University of Maryland. Under White, Temple crew's commitment to excellence is evident as the squad

maintains an unparalleled dominance of the Dad Vail Regatta. The Owls have won 19 of the last 21 Dad Vail finals. White has built his crew program around Philadelphia area rowers who are rich in both talent and motivation. He has also expanded his recruiting efforts to places like Canada, Croatia, and Ireland. White, honored as the 2003 Schuykill Navy Coach of the Year, coached the men's four at the 2000 Olympics Games in Sydney. The crew finished fifth in the final. A five-time U.S. National Rowing Team coach, White coached the men's pair with coxswain to the gold medal at the 2003 FISA World Rowing Championships in Milan, Italy. Many of White's Temple rowers have gone on to success in international competition. Oarsman Igor Francetic, 1996 Nation's Cup Champion for Croatia, earned a gold medal at the Senior "B" World Championships in 1997. Francetic captured the gold for Croatia in the Under-23 World Championships during the summer of 1999. Francetic earned a bronze medal as a member of the Croatian Men's Eight in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. He was also a member of the Croatian Men's Eight that captured gold at World Cup Munich 2000. Jason Read was also a member of that 1997 U.S. Nation's Cup squad. Read then earned a silver medal at the 1998 U.S. Nation's Cup in Greece and a gold medal at the Under-23 World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. He also picked up a silver medal at the 2003 World Rowing

Championships. Chris Kerber, a 1992 graduate, was a world champion in 1993 and again in 2000; and Scott Brodie, a 1994 graduate, was a member of the Canadian Olympic Eight in Atlanta. Besides being a winning coach, White was a member of the Temple University crew for three years (1971-73). As a senior he was honored with the Club's Most Valuable Rower Award. He was also a member of the Temple basketball team as a freshman during the 1969-70 season. In 1985, White was inducted into the Temple Athletic Hall of Fame. White, who is the son of retired Temple Athletic Director, Gavin White, Jr., resides in Abington, Pa., with his wife, Jane and their two children, Elizabeth, 23, and Gavin Michael, a sophomore at Temple.

Kevin Gross

, Asst. Coach/1st season/Temple 98 Kevin Gross, a four-time Dad Vail champion as a member of Temple's Varsity 8, joins Temple for his first season as assistant men's crew coach. Gross rowed for the Owls from 1994-98. During his time with the Owls, Gross'

Varsity 8 crew won four straight Dad Vail Regatta titles and also won the 1996 Augusta Invitational. Gross also helped the Cherry and White to their 15th consecutive Bergen Cup and ninth Murphy Cup titles. Gross also excelled in the academic arena, graduating magna cum laude in 1999 with a degree in nursing. He received the Temple University Alumnae Award for excellence in academic and clinical nurs-

ing, and potential for leadership. Gross also was an honorable mention Acres of Diamonds community service award honoree. He went on to earn a MBA in Health Administration from Temple University Fox School of Business in 2005. The Philadelphia native graduated from Father Judge High School, where he was an All-Catholic League Swimmer and three-year member of the crew team.

HISTORY The Temple University men’s varsity crew program began in 1966 under the watchful eye of Temple athletic director Ernie Casale. The first important and critical decision made was the hiring of a crew coach. Casale chose Thomas Aloysius Curran, aka “Bear”, former head crew coach at La Salle University and Penn AC Boat Club. He was well known, at age 17, for having been the youngest member of a boat known as the “Big Eight”” rowing out of Penn AC in Philadelphia. That crew had represented the US at the Berlin Olympic Games of 1936. In 1932 that Penn AC boat had also set the course record in Antwerp, Belgium that amazingly stood until 1976. Bear’s crews had won five Dad Vail Varsity Eight Championships while at La Salle. At Temple, Bear started the program with barely eight men. Most of his crew were students that were already enrolled at Temple. Several had experience – most did not. Under Bear Curran’s tutelage Temple University found immediate success, winning many dual meets and several large cup regattas. They won the Bergen Cup, which is symbolic of city supremacy several times and the Kerr Cup, an invitational for regional crews. Twice his crews finished second at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta . This was, and continues to be, the largest collegiate regatta in the world. In 1968 they finished second to Georgetown and in 1973 to the University of Massachusetts. During his tenure Bear helped to develop several national team athletes and coaches. Jack St. Clair won medals at the Pan-Am games; Marc Charry won several medals

representing the US at the Maccabiah Games. Coxswain John Hooten had a long tenure as coach at Vesper Boat Club, where he coached many national team members and gold-medal winning crews at the world championships. Hooten was also an Olympic coach and coached Temple University to the Dad Vail Varsity Eight Championship in 1985. Mike Hurley followed a distinguished career with tenure as vice-president of USRowing. A tradition of success had been well established under Curran’s guidance. In 1978, Bear Curran retired and turned the reins over to his assistant of three years Gavin R. White. White, the son of former Temple Athletic Director Gavin White Jr., and also one of Bear’s Boys, had evidently been taught well by the old Bear. As a rower, White was honored with the Club’s Most Valuable Rower Award. After several so-so seasons as head coach, the crew started to show steady improvement. The hiring of Mike Teti, an Olympian, as an assistant proved to be a great decision. Teti brought with him many years of national and international experience. In White’s fourth year at Temple, after an intense recruiting campaign, they won several cup races and managed to finish second at the 1982 Dad Vail Regatta. Perhaps the single most significant event of White’s first four years was the recruiting of Charlie Bracken. Once Bracken, a junior national team member, came on board things went up a notch. In 1983, White’s fifth season as head coach and with all but one back in the boat from the year before, Temple won its first Dad Vail Var-

sity Eight Championship. Since that time the Temple Varsity Men’s Eight has won 16 Bergen Cups, 15 Kerr Cups and the prestigious Dad Vail 21 times out of the last 25 years, losing in 1988 and not again until 2002. In that time, White had the privilege of coaching many national and Olympic team members. His first world champion was Chris Kerber who won in 1993 and again in 2002. Coxswain Marcus McElhenney became the second world champion in 2003. Other U.S. national team members included Charlie Bracken, and Mike Corboy (1980), Tom Ellis (1982), Kevin Murphy (1989), Rob Canavan (1988), Paul Mokha (1990), and Reade Palmer (1998). Also having sharpened their skills at Temple were Olympians Mike Moore (1992), Scott Brodie (1996Canada), Igor Francetic (2000 – Bronze Medal, Croatia – Men’s Eight), and Jason “JR” Read (1998 – Gold Medal US – World Champion in Under-23 Eight and in Athens 2004 – Olympic Gold Medal – Men’s Eight). Mike Moore was recently inducted into Temple’s Athletic Hall of Fame. White has also been privileged to have represented the US as a member of the US National Team staff since 1997, having coached the US Men’s Four at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Australia. His crews won gold medals in the coxed four and coxed pair at the World Championships in both 1999 and 2003 and earned a silver medal in 2000. White was honored as the 2003 Schuylkill Navy Coach of the Year.

SCHUYLKILL RIVER

The Temple University crews have the honor of having the Schuylkill River as their home course. The Schuylkill, esteemed as one of the elite centers of rowing in the United States and an ideal training venue, provides the Temple crews the opportunity of training and racing with and against some of the finest rowers in the world. The Schuylkill is set aside exclusively for rowing. The Schuylkill has been Temple men’s crew home course since the University initiated the varsity rowing program in 1966, and the women’s crew home since 1988. Owl rowers, as well as Olympic level and high school rowers, train on the Schuylkill year-round, without interruptions from high-powered boats. As one of the most prestigious centers of rowing in the United

States, the Schuylkill has been the home to many Olympic champions, including John B. Kelly Sr., and Jr., respectively. The Temple boat house and the Philadelphia Canoe Club were built in the 1920s to serve as the Olympic training camp. It is purposely situated at the midpoint of the Schuylkill’s 2000meter race course. The Schuylkill flows through one of Philadelphia’s most picturesque areas. The highly acclaimed setting is nothing short of spectacular at night, with the famed “boathouse row” outlined and lit up in white lights. The Schuylkill is home of the largest collegiate regatta in the world, the Dad Vail Regatta, as well as the largest scholastic regatta in the world, the Stotesbury Cup.
