•""'People are the key to Lincoln, but often the key takes the form of a multitude of symbols. The yearbook staff has tried to outline in this book the symbols; the essence of Lincoln. It is impossible to capture between the pages of a book the whole of any university, especially one as intricate and unique as Lincoln. However, we have captured the Lincoln community in its diverse aspects and dimensions. We offer to you glimpses of people who have been partners in friendship, people who have taught and guided us, and people who have been partakers of the same Lincoln experience. Open your eyes to take in the pictures and words; but open your mind f©r some hundred pales • d try the Lincoln experience. •
IN MEMORIAM HARLAN B. JOSEPH
And life is not always f a i r . . . The class of nineteen hundred and seventy would like to dedicate this page to Harlan B. Joseph. His death came in the midst of a confused New Jersey riot. Now, again, there is confusion in the world—at Lincoln and in the minds of all of us who are trying to make some sense at of this universal chaos. At this time, however, we would like to stop and reflect on the memory of a fellow class-mate who always seemed to have a demeanor of calmness about him. Our class would like to acknowledge and honor the memory of Harlan, a black man whose death made the Lincoln experience bittersweet.

In size, diversity, achievements, and beauty, your class is our most brilliant example to date of the growth and complexity of change that Lincoln University has experienced in recent years. Change and the challenge of change dominated this institution during the time that you were here. Indeed, your class is especially symbolic of the spirit of change since it was with the Class of 1 970 that we ushered in planned and formalized coeducation. With your graduation we bring to full realization the institution's belief in a commitment to educational opportunity for males and females at Lincoln University. What have these four years meant to you? Perhaps only time can tell. While at Lincoln you saw and, in all probability, participated in the birth of the Humanities program; the introduction of the 4-1-4 Calendar; the development of the Black Studies Institute. These and other innovations were designed to strengthen the basic curriculum, bring greater relevance to the students' education, and contribute creatively to the institution's efforts to educate the whole man. You also saw during your time the growth of student power and responsibility in governance and decision-making.
which we live. Hopefully—as the familiar commencement oratory will remind us—you have grown in wisdom, truth and ideals. Hopefully, that is what the sum of your experiences at Lincoln means. Thus, your Alma Mater will watch with interest and concern as you put your education to its most relevant test. It is a privilege and a pleasure for me to extend the good wishes of the University to you. You have given much to Lincoln and, we trust, you will take much away. And Lincoln is surely better for your presence and contributions. We all wish each of you the very best in your lives, in your careers, and in your relations with your fellow man. All good wishes,
But the real measure of the meaning and significance of your experiences at Lincoln comes not in the prideful cataloging of changes or the listing of events, but rather in your ability and commitment now to use these experiences to influence, shape and change the environment in
