Major General Robert G. Catalanotti (U.S. Army, Ret.) ’80 Commencement Speaker Doctor of Law and Letters
A decorated military leader, Major General Robert Catalanotti served his country for more than 30 years through the United States Army Reserve. As base commander at Camp Taji, the largest military base used by coalition forces in Iraq, he was responsible for more than 15,000 Iraqi and coalition soldiers and earned a Bronze Star for his service. During his Army tenure he commanded at every level—from platoon through division levels—and was responsible for more than 6,000 soldiers and civilian personnel in both active and reserve organizations. As commanding general of the 98th Training Division in Rochester, New York, he oversaw more than 3,000 drill sergeants and leaders training the Army’s newest recruits and later served as senior advisor to the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Interior, Riyadh. In his final military assignment, Catalanotti was director of exercises for U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida, where he was responsible for exercises and strategic partnership building in the Middle East and Central Asia. Upon retirement in 2014, he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal and the Department of State Superior Honor Award, two of the highest service awards presented in peacetime. Catalanotti currently serves as chief operations officer and director of the Military Veteran’s Psychology Program at William James College in Newton, Massachusetts. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Assumption College and master’s degrees from Suffolk University and the U.S. Army War College. He and wife Karen (Farina) ’78 have two children, Brigit’11 and Eric (a U.S. Army Ranger Captain), and live in Grafton, Massachusetts.
Terrence W. Macy, Ph.D. AP’66, ’70 Doctor of Laws and Letters
The former commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS), Terrence Macy was appointed to this position in 2011 by Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. In this role, Macy oversaw the $1.1 billion state agency, which serves 19,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, including 4,000 infants and toddlers. Macy has worked in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities for 40 years, serving in both the public and private sector. He began his career working in Connecticut in various positions at the DDS Hartford Regional Center. Following that he worked in state regional systems in Ohio, where he was instrumental in developing responsive methods for supporting individuals transitioning back to their communities from institutional settings. During this period, he also pursued graduate degrees at The Ohio State University, where he worked extensively on transition issues. After moving back to Connecticut, Macy has worked for 27 years in the private sector and taught nonprofit graduate courses at the University of Connecticut and special education courses at Southern Connecticut State University. He has served on numerous statewide boards and councils in various capacities and belongs to several national professional organizations. He is a fellow of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities—twice chair of its Northeast Region X and chair of the Connecticut Chapter—a member of the National Conference of Executive Directors of The Arc, and chair of The Arc U.S. Board Chapter Excellence Training Committee. A resident of Madison, Connectictut, Macy has also taught at the community college, undergraduate and graduate levels at Connecticut colleges and universities. He is a 1966 graduate of Assumption Prep School, holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Assumption College and master’s and doctorate degrees in developmental disabilities (developmental psychology) from The Ohio State University.

The Assumption College Mace In medieval times the mace was used as a deadly war club. Later it became a symbol of authority, and in the context of an academic community, it has often signified teaching authority. At Assumption College, education promotes self-discovery, but the true discovery of self must first take into account one’s own nature and purpose. The symbolism of the mace reflects the simple but essential elements that make for a full and responsible consideration of self, within the broader context in which there can be a full blossoming of the individual. An education at Assumption nurtures the growth of specific habits or, more precisely, virtues. These include: the Intellectual Virtues, which guide the student to truth; the Moral Virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and moderation) which enable a person to lead a good life; and, most important of all, as Saint Paul and Saint Augustine would say, the Theological Virtues (faith, hope and charity), which lead the Christian to ultimate happiness. The Latin lettering on the three bands of the sterling node states the thrust of these essential virtues: Intelligentia Adducitur Veritatem; Voluntas Adducitur Bonum; Cor Adducitur Amorem. The staff could be considered a lignum vitae (tree of life), from which the virtues spring. The three upper branches of ebony and gold represent the virtues and their impact upon everyone at the College, symbolized by the multifaceted fluorite stone. At Assumption, it is the community’s shared vision that fosters a full flowering of the individual. The three blossoms of gold from the blue fluorite represent the individual coming to full maturity in Christ, in accord with the College’s motto: “Until Christ be formed in you.” The Assumption College Mace was conceived, designed, created and given as a gift to the College by Paul A. Cavanagh of Greenville, Rhode Island.
Academic Regalia The academic garb comes from the 12th and 13th centuries when most students and teachers were clerics and had taken at least minor holy orders. The assignment of colors to certain faculties, a much later development, was standardized in the United States in the late 19th century. White was assigned to arts and letters; red, a traditional color of the Church, was assigned to theology; green, for herbs, went to medicine; purple, the color of emperors, went to law; and golden yellow, standing for wealth and alchemy, went to the sciences. Because philosophy means the love and pursuit of wisdom, in the case of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), dark blue represents the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship in any field for which the degree is conferred rather than in the discipline of philosophy alone. Gowns vary by degree. The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves, the rear of which are cut square and the front of which are cut in arcs. Both the bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves and is faced down the front with black velvet. Three bars of velvet cross each sleeve. Often the bars are black, but they may also be in the color distinctive to the discipline in which the degree has been conferred. In all cases, the exterior of the academic hood is black, and the interior is lined with the official color or colors of the institution that conferred the degree. The bachelor’s hood is three feet in length; the master’s is three and one-half feet; and the doctor’s is four feet. The doctor’s hood alone has panels at the sides. The edges of the hoods are velvet, and are two inches, three inches and five inches for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively. The color of this trim is indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains. The mortar board cap may be made of soft or hard material and, as its name suggests, symbolizes the role of learning in building individual and shared futures. The tassel is either black or the color appropriate to the subject, with the exception of the doctor’s tassel, which may be gold. For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctors’ gowns, edging of hoods and tassels of caps, the colors associated with different disciplines are as follows: Agriculture......................................................maize Arts, Letters and Humanities............................ white Commerce, Accountancy and Business............... drab Economics.................................................... copper Education.................................................. light blue Fine Arts........................................................brown Law............................................................... purple Library Science...............................................lemon Medicine.........................................................green Music............................................................... pink Oratory.................................................... silver gray Philosophy................................................ dark blue Physical Education....................................sage green Science......................................................... golden Theology....................................................... scarlet The above text is adapted from American University and Colleges, 16th ed.
