JUNIOR LEAGUE OF PUEBLO Women building better communities

Dear League members, It’s hard to believe that we are wrapping up the league year already. It went by so fast and I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished in the past nine months. When I sit back and think about all the events and activities that we were involved in this year it makes me feel good to know that we are reaching and impacting so many people in the Pueblo community. Our mission and vision statements explain our focus on women and children, however, many of our

Our Mission The Junior League of Pueblo is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Our Vision The Junior League of Pueblo is a recognized leader in the community, committed to fulfilling the need of the child. Volunteers nurture the individual, advocate for the rights of the child and strive to empower the children of Pueblo to reach their full potential.

events such as Touch-a-Truck, Monster Dash, Kids in the Kitchen, and literacy events impact the entire family. Getting the whole family involved in health and wellness just makes sense. I hope to see these events continue and grow each year. I definitely feel like the community awareness of Junior League is growing as well because of our strong attendance at events and the large provisional classes that we are bringing in year after year. Congratulations to the GNO committee for another successful event this year. So many of you put in countless hours of preparation that took time away from your lives and your families – you should be proud of your efforts and the results because all that hard work is what makes it possible for us to continue our other events throughout the year. Thank you to all the members and sustainers for selling tickets, working, being a part of the fashion show and attending GNO. I have received many positive comments from both vendors and attendees that they also thought GNO turned out great and can’t wait for next year. It has been a pleasure serving as your president this year. Thank you to the board for your hard work and support. I learn new things and grow as a person every year that I am involved with the League and I look forward to continuing in the years to come. As I hand the reigns over to Amber Latella I am confident that she will also have a great year with a strong, supportive board, as well as the support of the general membership and sustainers. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me and making me a better person. Presi den t 20 1 4 -2 0 15

Board of Directors

Blessed is the word that Junior League member Mande Mathews used quite frequently when I sat down with her at lunch on a breezy Wednesday afternoon. Mande boasted that she is blessed to have the opportunity to work part-time for her family business. She has the time to volunteer at her boys’ school, for Junior League and some days get in an hour of yoga for herself. She is blessed to have been married to her wonderful husband of ten years Spencer and for her two boys Chester, age 7 and Lain, age 5.

Mande Mathews

Mande is a Colorado native, but was born and raised in Evergreen, Colorado. She met Spencer in college and followed

him to Pueblo to assume the family business. She admits that she didn’t enjoy Pueblo at first and would continue commuting to Denver for work and to be with friends. She was in “Pueblo denial”. She was blessed to have attended Girls’ Night Out about five years ago as it changed her entire outlook on the Pueblo community. She joined the league and began lasting friendships. She became more involved as the GNO Chair for two years, Funds Chair and the soon president-elect. This dedication to the league increased her love for Pueblo, increased her confidence and leadership skills, and provided Mande connections throughout the community. She is proud to now call Pueblo her home. Mande enjoys traveling to anywhere with a sunny beach and a pina colada! Mande’s motto of “work hard, play harder” will come into play this summer as she will be traveling with her family in their camper to the Seattle area for ten days! They have no plans but to have FUN! If Mande could interview one person it would be Jesus. There are so many questions she has, but maybe she can help people increase their faith through more knowledge. She has personal goals to polish our bylaws, increase revenues and community impact by 20 percent. Junior League has been a blessing in Mande’s life, but I would have to say that we are blessed to have found her! We know she will accomplish her goals and lead the league into a bright future! -Spotlight by Kristen Spicola

Let your Light Shine Sustainer Spotlight Kyle Christian grew up in central Massachusetts and attended an all-girls boarding school outside of Baltimore. Kyle went to CU Boulder for a short period of time where she met her husband of 40 years, Jim. Kyle finished her degree in Special Education at the University of Eastern Washington. Kyle and Jim moved to Pueblo 30 years ago in 1985. They have two daughters, Arwen and Meara. Arwen is in her ophthalmology residency in Ohio. Meara has just become a sustainer of the Junior League of Denver – as she finishes medical school. Kyle begins everyday with some sort of physical activity – whether it is a walk with the ladies to socialize, a bike ride with her husband, or, if the weather is not inclement, a morning spent at the YMCA. Most of her day is spent working with Jim for their own small company -- a company that helps individuals with complex chronic conditions to better manage their health issues. The National Institute of Health helps fund much of the company’s work, which has taken place primarily in Pueblo.

K y l e C h r is t i a n Kyle’s mother was part of Junior League in Macon, Georgia; however, Kyle did not think Junior League was for her. She says, “I had an image in my mind of the way it possibly was in the south in the 1940s, and did not realize how much of a transformation Junior League had gone through, until my husband heard a radio show on Junior League one night.” Kyle joined Junior League, and completed her Provisional Year, in St. Paul, Minnesota. After meeting wonderful women and learning a great deal about St. Paul, Kyle and Jim moved… again. However, the move to Pueblo was made easier, because she moved as a “transfer” from St. Paul’s Junior League to Pueblo’s Junior League. She says, “It was kind of like coming home.” Kyle is currently a sustainer of Junior League of Pueblo, and she tries to attend at least one Sustainer Luncheon a year, plus the Holiday Party. She likes to participate in the “Done in a Day” projects, such as Christmas wrapping, because someone else has done all the organizing and she just gets to partake in the fun. Kyle enjoys meeting all the young and enthusiastic actives in Junior League of Pueblo. The first year Kyle joined Junior League of Pueblo, her friend who was co-chairing the rummage sale moved, so Kyle stepped up in her place and loved it. The following year Kyle chaired the rummage sale from the start, and she tells us that she really enjoyed being able to be part of such a wonderful service to the community. In the early 90’s Kyle became President of the Junior League of Pueblo, and served in all the roles leading up to President. Kyle says, “I t hi nk we [J uni o r Lea gu e o f P ue bl o ] truly mad e a d iff er enc e. ” She s ays t hat J uni o r Lea gu e ha s help e d h er by “p ro vidin g li f e -lo ng fri ends hip s, givi ng b ac k to the c o mmu ni t y, s el f -c o nfi de nc e, lea rnin g gr eat l ead ership skills, and p ro vi d ing an o p p o rtunit y to wo r k wi t h many di ff er ent wo m en i n so m e asto nish ingly c hal len gin g si tuatio ns. ” Kyle hopes that the Junior League of Pueblo will continue to positively impact the community of Pueblo, and meet the needs of both the community and the members. She says, “With the current leadership/membership, I'm sure this is more of a probability than just a possibility!” -Spotlight by Donna Souder 4

Good as Gold Award

Members, we have arrived at the end of our League year, and what a year it has been! Thank you all for your dedication and involvement in Membership activities as well as our Fundraising and Community events!!

Membership

Membership Committee has enjoyed bringing you many opportunities to socialize with one another and gain from experience from those in our community working toward similar goals through our guest speakers at our General Membership Meetings. We have especially appreciated the response to our newly launched series, Ladies Who…!

Congratulations Lacy Desmond & Jessi Ones! For your hard work Co-chairing Girls’ Night Out. Junior League appreciates all you do!

Summer Social – Members and families enjoyed a relaxing BBQ with some fun in the sun at Pueblo West’s Lovell Park! Fall Social – Members and families gathered at Musso Farms for beautiful evening complete with hay rides, pumpkin pickin’ and pumpkin decorating, friends, food and fried chicken! Launch of Ladies Who… with Ladies Who…Library! – Members enjoyed a special presentation and tour of the Lucero Library, still under construction at the time, from Midori Clark, paired with scrumptious snacks and a toast to the new library! JLP has a special connection with this particular library, as it holds the Junior League of Pueblo Meeting Room! Ladies Who…Lounge – Actives and Sustainers, along with their guests enjoyed a lovely evening at Wine Down by the River. It was a great opportunity for members to mingle and share with prospective members about JLP. Having created this series with recruitment in mind, we were excited to see such a great turnout at our first mixed social!

All this, on top of the great work we did in contributing to local needs through our DIAM’s:  Boys & Girls Club – backpack/supplies drive  Posada – toiletries  Cooperative Care – women’s business attire and clothing/accessories  Pueblo Child Advocacy Center – book donation  El Pueblo…An Adolescent Treatment Community – suitcase drive  Catholic Charities – diaper drive  Pueblo Diversified Industries – prom dress drive Membership cannot go without highlighting our amazing new Active members who put together a phenomenal program to empower women through their Provisional Project Women Helping Women: Steps to Success this past fall. These ladies poured their hearts into this project and it showed! From the donations they brought in to provide women attending the event with a professional outfit complete with accessories, to the wonderful connections they provided attending women through the speakers and resource vendors. It was a fantastic event, and these women have continued through the rest of the League year assisting with all League functions! In looking forward, we have another sizable group of women interested in joining JLP. Thank you to our members for continuing to help build our League through recruitment of new members! It is exciting to see what next League year will bring! Cheers!
