THE SHAMR St. Patrick Parish, Providence
Dear St. Patrick-Providence Parish Family, I give praise and thanks to almighty God for the gift of nature. Isn’t God awesome? Praise God! If some of you feel that you’ve missed an edition of the Shamrock or that it’s been awhile since you’ve seen one, you’re right. After all the happenings and thrills of April, I just sat back and oops, I didn’t create a May letter. Thus this will be May/June edition of the Shamrock. You’ve got to get a more punctual person to create this letter, the one you got now is having senior’ moments. On May 2nd the priests of the Toledo Diocese gathered to celebrate our annual Jubilee of Ordinations. We come together for Mass, fellowship and dinner as we congratulate our brother priests on the significant jubilees. This year jubilarians are: 25th Anniversary-Father Joseph Cardone; 40th Anniversary-Father James Brown; 50th Anniversary- Father James Bacik, Father Robert Haas, Father Robert Holden, Father David Lautermilch; th 60 Anniversary-Father Jerome Niedermier, Father James Risacher th 75 -Monsignor Bertrand Shenk. The month of May concludes our parish religious education program and I want to thank the many volunteers for their hard work and dedication to passing on the faith to our children and youth. If it wasn’t for these volunteers, a vital part of our parish faith formation would be lacking. I want to take a moment to thank the parents for their cooperation in our religious education program. It takes dedication and a

lot of work to get students back and forth for religious education classes and I truly admire the sacrifice our parents make to pass on the faith. Your sacrifice and cooperation is appreciated. Thanks from a grateful pastor to all parents, students, and volunteer teachers. Big THANKS also to Christine Nelms, our parish coordinator of religious education for another successful year. God Bless You All!!! In evaluating the attendance at our religious education program, we are seeing increased school and other extracurricular activities scheduled for Wednesday nights. It is frustrating to have volunteer teachers prepare a class and only have one or no students show. In order to address this situation, we are looking at the possibility of scheduling all religious education classes on Sundays for 1 ½ hours instead of 1 hour and alternating weekends between K-5th grades and 6th -12th grades. A survey of parents is in process, please return survey and express your opinion. We are trying to offer a vital religious education program to give our children and youth a solid basis of their Catholic faith. Please keep our R.E. in your prayers. May 26/27, we celebrate the solemnity of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the church. The Spirit was sent to unify the church and give it courage and strength to face the troubles of life. The gift of the Spirit is unity and peace. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide the church today. Come, Holy Spirit, Come! On Monday May 28th, we celebrate Memorial Day, a time to remember and give
thanks for the many men and women who answered the call of their country to protect us and our freedom. The freedoms we live in the United States of America cannot be taken for granted. Give thanks to God for the men and women of the armed forces in the past, the present and the future. Let us always remember. Our mass schedule on Memorial Day is: 8:00a.m. St. Patrick-Providence and 9:30a.m. St. Louis-Custar (in the parish cemetery-bring a chair or blanket for seating). Our Memorial Day Service at Saint Patrick Cemetery with the American Legion will be at 11:30a.m. Come join us in prayer. As we conclude the month of May and begin the Month of June we look forward to graduations. Congratulations to all our graduates, may your future be filled with success and fulfillment. God go with you! On June 2/3, we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, one God, three persons-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, equal in majesty yet one God. A mystery to be lived. June 9/10, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Such a precious gift. June 16/17, we celebrate Father’s Day. Yeah, thanks to our dads who have guided us along life and given us big shoes to fill. Thanks Dads! God bless all dads, living and deceased. June 18-21, I will be attending the Toledo Diocese Priests’ Convocation at Saw Mill Creek in Huron, Ohio. This is a spiritual, educational and recreational opportunity for us priests to gather with each other. It is a very refreshing and relaxing time together. I know that it sounds very much like vacation, but we do have conferences and speakers coming in for it. I’ll suffer thru the pampering of prepared meals, socials, etc. Somebody has to do it. June 25th-29th will be the annual Grand Rapids ecumenical Vacation Bible School held here at St. Patrick’s. Our grounds will be
crawling with munchkins everywhere. It’s a wild, crazy time. Come join in the fun. June 30th-July 1st, members of our St. Patrick Youth group will be attending the Steubenville Youth Conference. It promises to be very exciting. Have a great time, you will be remembered in our prayers. God bless you! Well, the deadline is now past so I’ll end for now. Love, Peace & Prayers
Rest In Peace: Father Joe O”Brien, a retired Roman Catholic priest who served Saint Patrick-Providence from 1982 until retiring July 5, 1995, died on Saturday May 5th at the Sacred Heart Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor, Oregon, Ohio. He had been ill for several months and the possible cause of death was renal failure. Father O’Brien was ordained on May 28,1955. Father O’Brien had a great sense of humor and was proud of his Irish heritage. May he rest in the loving hands of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. Thanks for being our shepherd, Fr. O’Brien. Rest in Peace!
Welome to our parish family through the waters of Baptism: Adelle Joy Byers who was baptized May 13. Her parents are Jeremy & Amanda. Grandparents are John & Sue Byers and Pat & James Kitchen. On May 20 Mila Grace Shadday, daughter of Monica and Mitch was baptized. On that same day Mila’s cousin Emmett Michael Cole was baptized. His parents are Jodie & Casey Cole. The proud grandparents are Mike and Kim Hertzfeld. Congratulations to all.

Religious Education News Religious Education classes ended with an ice cream party! Students were invited to complete a scavenger hunt around the church and grounds. You’d be surprised what you can find around here. I would like to personally thank all the teachers for their hard work and dedication this past school year. I would also like to thank all the parents who made the effort to bring their children faithfully to religious ed classes. I know it is not easy with busy schedules that seem to be getting busier every year! Speaking of busy schedules, if you are a parent of a religious education student and you haven’t returned your survey yet, it is never too late. We want to hear from everyone. If you lost your survey and need another one, call the office and we will send another one out. If you are looking for a wonderful way to keep your child engaged in their faith, please consider sending your child to Vacation Bible School this summer. This is an ecumenical program that is held here at St. Patrick’s. The program is held Monday, June 25th to Friday, June 29 th from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. The children will participate in recreation, crafts, music, and of course Bible stories. Flyers and registration forms are available in the church hall Our incoming Confirmation students will be performing service hours over the summer. Several opportunities are already scheduled, however I am always open to hearing your ideas. If anyone is interested in going down to Padua Center in Toledo to help with their children’s garden club, please contact me soon. Like the tongues of fire that descended upon the first disciples at Pentecost, let us pray that the Holy Spirit enter our hearts and minds, giving us the courage to live out our faith. May our actions speak louder than our words. DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT PENTECOST? * The word “Pentecost” comes from the Greek, meaning 50th day. * The Catholic Church celebrates Pentecost 50 days after Easter and 10 days after Christ’s Ascension into Heaven. * The apostles and Mary were gathered to pray and celebrate the Jewish Feast of Weeks. * The Feast of Weeks was a time of thanksgiving and commemorated the day God gave the Israelites the Ten Commandments. * Pentecost is considered the “birthday” of the Church.

From Otsego Food Pantry: “The pantry has been quite busy. I can report, however, that we have had new people move into the area, use the pantry once or twice, then finding a job. They are able to tell me that they won’t be coming back because they found work. I hope to hear that more often as time goes by. If you are planting a garden this year, please consider planting an extra row for the pantry. Fresh vegetables and fruits are expensie and perishable so the poor often end up buying less healthy foods. So if you can, please consider donating a fresh fruit or vegatable to the pantry. Since we will be into Summer vacation soon, the pantry could use Kool-aid, Lunchables, single-serving containers of anything kids could put into the microwave, and any other items you think kids might like for lunch. We start collecting bologna for the summer for making sandwiches. I want to put in a request for Summer clothes for Hosanna Lutheran’s Clothing Closet, which is located in the First Presbyterian Church’s manse garage. This is a great mission and the people who have been given clothes have really appreciated them.” Sharon Current Otsego Pantry Coordiantor Annunciation Radio Spring Sharathon The Spring Sharathon will take Wed. May 23 through Fri. May 25 from 7 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Please help support Catholic Radio by donating. This is a listener-supported ministry, and needs your help in order to continue! Listen every day at 89.7 in NW Ohio, or at 88.1 in North Central Ohio, or on the web www.AnnunciationRadio.com. God bless you for your generosity.
