BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT In the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. “Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

In line with our Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. • Our behavior in the broader Jewish or general community reflects on BRS as a diverse, Modern Orthodox Synagogue. It is hoped that we interact in a way that reflects favorably on traditional Judaism. • When the Shul is crowded, please take private articles off the seat next to you and invite someone to sit down. There is a coatroom in the lobby for hats and outerwear. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at

BRS VOLUNTEER SECURITY TEAM
Over the last few weeks, we have been reminded yet again that the threats to the safety and security of the Jewish and American communities are tragically real. Since 9/11, there have been 78 terror attacks in the US and it is clear that this is going to continue. In the aftermath of the Orlando attack, it came to light that the terrorist visited the site of the attack previously and also scoped out other possible targets. The presence of a vigilant security team is the single biggest deterrence to any possible future attack. Six months ago, the synagogue created our volunteer security team with 10 individuals. Since then, our number has increased to 30 men and women. While that number is good, at a synagogue of our size, we realistically need at least double that, if not triple. An application to join the team can downloaded from www.brssecurity. org. Your participation in this effort is desperately needed. Please join us as we protect what is most precious to us – you and your family.
TOMCHEI SHABBAT IS IN IMMEDIATE NEED OF SUMMER FUNDS
We thank all of you who have so graciously given to the Tomchei Shabbat throughout the year. However, our funds are depleted and we need your help to make it through the Summer months. We presently have 27 families relying on our program at a cost of $12,500 a month. Every single penny that is collected for our Tomchei Shabbat Fund is given directly to our families in the program with zero overhead costs. The cost to sponsor a family for a month is $500. We ask that you consider sponsoring a family for a month, but please know that donations of any size are greatly needed at this time. The community working together will enable us to continue to provide food for our families that are struggling financially at this time with dignity.
TALLIS
BRS members are requested to bring their personal tallis on Shabbat and holidays. The Shul's Talleisim on the rack in the lobby are primarily meant for our guests and visitors. We often do not have enough for everyone who needs as each logo embroidered Tallis costs about $100. If you have a BRS Tallis at home kindly return it to the Shul or if you would like to donate a new Tallis, please contact Matthew at mjh@ brsonline.org. ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION
Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor who embodied the determination of the human spirit to overcome evil and who became the conscience of the world, died this week. His passing, just as Americans were embarking on Independence Day celebrations, was in a way a final tribute to the country whose troops liberated Buchenwald on April 11, 1945 and later gave him shelter and allowed him to flourish as a teacher, writer, and speaker. The obligation not to look away, not to be indifferent, when cruelty and horror are being inflicted on the innocent and helpless became Wiesel’s lifelong theme. A passionate advocate for Israel, he visited the country often and felt attached to its destiny. Upon hearing of his death, World Jewish Congress’ Ronald S. Lauder wrote. “We have lost the most articulate witness to history’s greatest crime. Without Elie Wiesel in the world, it is up to every one of us now to stand up to the deniers. With his passing, we will all have to work a little harder because we will no longer have Elie to remind us of what happens when the world is silent and indifferent to evil.”

The mitzvah of honoring parents ( )כיבוד אב ואםapplies to many types of actions, speech, and even thought. A child is required not only to tend to their parents’ physical needs (such as feeding and clothing them), but also to make sure that those needs can be met (such as making sure there is food to eat and insuring that his or her parents have respectable clothing to wear). Because of the importance of כיבוד אב ואםas a positive mitzvah, there are certain halakhic ramifications in other realms as well. Davening shaharit is supposed to be the first activity that a person engages in upon waking up. There are therefore certain restrictions upon performing other activities before tefilah. While going shopping is among those prohibited activities, if a parent is in need of groceries for breakfast, a child may go shopping before shaharit to purchase them. Another such prohibited activity is going out of one’s way to greet people before shaharit. However, if one’s parents are leaving for a trip early in the morning, a child may go to their home to wish them a safe trip and say goodbye. Similarly, a child may bring his or her parents to the airport if necessary or pick them up from the airport if they arrive before shaharit. Additionally, despite the general prohibition against formal greetings before shaharit, the mitzvah of כיבוד אב ואםdictates that if a child encounters his or her father before shaharit, the child may kiss his or her father’s hands even before davening. Parshah Thought After witnessing the ground swallow up Korah and a Heavenly fire consuming his 250 person strong entourage, Bnei Yisrael blamed Moshe and Aharon for their deaths. And yet, despite their disappointment with their leaders, the Torah writes that the complaints against Moshe and Aharon only started the next morning. The miraculous nature of those deaths was highly impactful, why wait until the morning for the blame game? R. Yonatan Eibeschutz explains that Bnei Yisrael were conflicted about the entourage’s punishment. If they intended to rebel (and were )מזידים, they deserved to die. But if they were merely caught up in Korah’s rhetoric and didn’t intend to rebel ()שוגגים, then death was simply too harsh. The confrontation itself involved each man offering ketoret on a copper pan ()מחתות. After they died, Hashem commanded that these מחתותbe fashioned into copper plating for the mizbe’ah. It was seeing these מחתותfashioned onto the mizbe’ah the next morning that triggered the complaints. The Torah teaches that ( אין קטיגור נעשה סניגורlit., a prosecutor cannot become a defense attorney), which is why the Kohen Gadol does not wear gold vestments when entering the Kodesh Kodashim on Yom Kippur, since gold is reminiscent of the golden calf and is inappropriate to recall on the Day of Atonement. Bnei Yisrael reasoned that if Korah’s entourage were מזידים, then אין קטיגור נעשה סניגורdictates that their מחתותshould not be used for the mizbe’ah. Since Hashem requested these מחתותfor the mizbe’ah, it must be because the entourage were merely שוגגים. After seeing the mizbe’ah with its new accoutrements and realizing what it meant, only then did Bnei Yisrael blame Moshe for their deaths.

Boca Raton Synagogue Annual Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur High Holiday Services Join Rabbi Josh Broide for another inspirational program!! THE JACOB ALALU & FANNY ESKENAZI ROSH HASHANAH SERVICES (1) Sunday, 10/2/2016 • 7:00pm - 8:00pm (2) Monday 10/3/2016 (Shofar) • 10:00am - 12:00pm THE JOSEPH & SALLY LEVINE & FAMILY YOM KIPPUR SERVICES (3) Tuesday, 10/11/2016 (Kol Nidrei) • 7:00pm - 8:30pm (4) Wednesday, 10/12/2016 (Yizkor) • 10:00am - 12:00pm FAQS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is this a typical High Holiday Service? No way, it’s a High Holiday Service unlike any you have attended before!! Its interactive and you can even sing along! These interactive services, in which the prayers and customs are fully explained, are designed to provide a meaningful High Holiday Jewish experience to everyone who attends. Your High Holidays will never be the same again. Is it in English or Hebrew? We use a Machzor (High Holiday prayer book) that uses both Hebrew and English, but all of the Hebrew prayers are transliterated into English so that everyone can easily follow along. Will I know all of the tunes? Some of of the tunes will be familiar traditional tunes and some will be new, but everything will be taught and explained so you will feel part of the special experience. Why will I love this service? This Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, approximately 2 million American Jews will attend High Holiday Services. Unfortunately, you may not be one of them. Why? Is it because: You do not understand the prayers. Although highly educated and sophisticated you feel inadequate and illiterate in a synagogue setting. The sermons do not speak to you and the rituals make you feel awkward. Frequently, you leave the synagogue feeling guiltier than before you came so, it’s no wonder why you rarely come in, let alone come back!! With this in mind, the Boca Raton Synagogue, BRS West and the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) has designed special “High Holiday Beginners Services” for you! Where is it located? At BRS West on the Campus of the Katz Hillel Day School which is on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach campus. Do I need reservations? Yes, because of security and limited seating, reservations are required.
