Project Bread's monthly giving program

“Today more than ever, hunger affects all parts of our society — individuals, businesses and government. Left unchecked, hunger threatens our health, our productivity and our future. On a daily basis, Project Bread, through its dedicated staff, supporters and partners, spearheads the fight to end hunger in Massachusetts by helping people to better understand hunger and its causes, and by working to find not just temporary fixes, but meaningful and lasting solutions.” — Mitchel Appelbaum, senior partner, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP and Project Bread Board Member, shown here with his wife, Meryl, who is a Heart & Sole Walker

“We became involved with this project as a dual effort — to connect our employees to a community relations event that could include their family members, while putting them in touch with a very worthwhile philanthropic need: feeding the hungry. A lot of people still assume that hunger in America isn’t a problem — but it is. The Walk for Hunger allows people to feel good about the company’s sponsorship while feeling proud of its affiliation as a lead supporter of the event. Our vision has been to align our company name with a visible statewide event that would bring pride, community awareness, and appreciation for diversity and a broader community spirit within our own Mansfield location. The Walk for Hunger is for me, personally, a very gratifying event.” — Allen Todres, vice president of Human Resources, Tyco Healthcare

“This was my fifth consecutive Walk for Hunger, but my first time leading a team for State Street. Project Bread is a fantastic organization, and this year’s Walk raised $3.2 million to help hungry people here in Massachusetts. It felt so good to be out with colleagues, friends, and 43,000 other caring citizens, making a positive impact on our community! It’s great to work for a company that encourages its employees to get involved. Thanks to all who supported us!” — Regina K. McNally, executive administrator, State Street Global Advisors

“Participating in The Walk for Hunger really fits Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts from a mission standpoint. It’s important to address the basic need of hunger because it has such a direct tie to health and well-being. Those who are most at risk are children and seniors: one is our future and the other is our heritage, and we should be supporting both.” — Stephen Booma, executive vice president, Sales, Marketing, and Service, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, shown here with John Coughlin, vice president of sales, Select Markets

“Each year, Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger means more to me. Since I started Walking in 1988, it’s become a part of my life and a way to give back to those less fortunate. It’s also become a tradition for our state — a tradition rooted in the innate qualities of human nature — compassion, kindness, and concern. It thrills me to be part of something this big! It doesn’t matter what religion, ethnicity, age, or gender you are — what matters is that we all do our part to end hunger in Massachusetts.” — Gabriel Yepes, Heart & Sole Walker, Brighton, who has participated in The Walk for Hunger for 18 years and has raised an amazing $295,000 through the generous donations of staff and members of The University Club of Boston

Heart & Sole Walkers are a group of dedicated participants who raise a minimum of $500 for each Walk. In 2006, Heart & Sole Walkers raised more than $1.2 million to relieve and eliminate hunger in Massachusetts. Last year, their unflagging commitment helped Project Bread–funded agencies provide 42 million meals to people in need.

$500 - $999

“I’ve been walking and volunteering for a number of years and each year more and more people go hungry. Whatever I can do to help the hungry makes me feel like I am doing something worthwhile.” — Karen Allschwang, Heart & Sole Walker, Newton
